    Title: Broken Bones
    Author: Donald Davis
    Narrator: Donald Davis
    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 49 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-28-07
    Publisher: August House
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 9 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
The second set of stories concerns Davis' neighbors, the Leatherwoods, and explains what happens when two big brothers team up against two little brothers. It also tells us that fathers are always smarter than their sons!
    Editorial Reviews:
These four stories range from solid to pretty close to great. Donald Davis is a masterful storyteller. He blends a leisurely pace with a Southern accent to evoke the feel of bygone days when there was all the time in the world to listen to a story. The details about his childhood pranks clearly still live for him in his heart (more even than in memory), and his affection for old friends and his family is evident. While some of the stories are so long (twenty minutes plus) that children's attention might waver, the content of all Davis's stories is family friendly.

    Wonderful stories
For anyone who loves good old fashioned stories, you can't go wrong with Donald Davis. Each of his "books" are about an hour in length and each focus on a specific topic. This one tells some stories of his growing up years and the ornery things that they got into.
    Very cute.

Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 18 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Learning to drive has occasioned emotions ranging from reasonable caution to unbridled terror. Learning under the watchful eye of one's spouse is an added challenge. Undertaking the task with anxious children in the backseat can only heighten the sensory richness of the moment. Davis recalls his mother's driving lessons through the objective eye of a patient and restrained child, in contrast with his little brother, whose oft-shouted refrain, "You're going to kill us all!" rings in memory.
    Editorial Reviews:
This charming, and hilarious, collection of childhood reminiscences is a wonderful showcase of Southern storytelling. The stories concern, among other incidents, Davis's memory of his mother learning to drive. He also gives some family background that makes these stories endearing. An experienced storyteller, Davis is perfect. He has a mellow Appalachian accent that is skilled and nuanced. One need only see him telling these tales to get a fuller experience.

    So Funny!!!
We TOTALY LOVED these stories! They're so funny! I really like that the guy that wrote it read it. Would definitely recommend it! Have fun laughing!
The tones by Davis really color stories.
    I enjoyed the storylines.
My favorite parts were the little brother's feeling during the rides, along with how far peas & carrots can go...
The put such detail in the stories making me want more!
CLEAN & HILARIOUS a Rare & Delightful Combination!
What made the experience of listening to Mama Learns to Drive the most enjoyable?
I have been so disappointed lately with really great stories being ruined by filthy language or squeaky clean not so funny "comedies". This was refreshingly everything I hoped it would be.
What other book might you compare Mama Learns to Drive to and why?
I wish I knew. I have yet to research Christian Comedy but what an idea!
Have you listened to any of Donald Daviss other performances before? How does this one compare?
No. I will check them out.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It did make me laugh, wasn't that the point? ;)
    Any additional comments?
    Thank you Donald Davis!

The next story explains how he came to be permanently fired as his brother's babysitter. The third tale recounts one of the many science projects for which his brother served as Davis's personal chemistry set. These stories will call forth memories from anyone who has had to live with siblings.

    Editorial Reviews:
In his folksy Carolina accent Davis tells three stories of childhood suitable for children, but enjoyable by all. In his opening remarks, Davis states that his stories are intended to inspire listeners to connect with their memories of their brothers and sisters. Three stories of brotherly love-or not-start with the birth of a baby with perfect curls and the older brother's solution-a hairdo just like grandpa's fringe. The second story features a series of games that involve tormenting a baby in a playpen, and the last story describes a journey through the cow pies of the pasture. In each tale older brother Donald creates a bit of trouble and receives his comeuppance from a wise dad with a sense of humor.

    Publisher's Summary:
Joe Davis was in his mid-40s when he became a father, and the experience he was able to apply in raising his sons lent creativity to his parenting. The five stories here recall the wisdom of fathers with humor and rich detail: a visit to the Smithsonian inspires father's memory; father "cures" a boy's impulse to try cigarettes; Santa Claus learns an important lesson; and someone plays a trick on a visiting preacher.

    Editorial Reviews:
Lively fiddle music begins and is interspersed throughout these historical snippets when storyteller Donald Davis and his father visit the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, DC. The displays of Americana remind the senior Davis of events in his life, which are relayed through Davis's matchless performance. When Davis sees a huge hypodermic needle, he recalls his bout of pneumonia. The buildup to the doctor's slapping him on the back and using the needle to pull the pneumonia from his lungs is perfect - listeners will find themselves breathless. The warm description of excited children seeing their stockings, each filled with an orange, a peppermint stick, and one penny for each year of the child's age, is ideal for today's kids.

    Editorial Reviews:
With her distinctive Texas twang, storyteller Barbara McBride-Smith presents family tales close to her heart. Remarkably expressive, she vocalizes her work in a distinctive comic style. In this tribute to her mother, McBride-Smith demonstrates Mama's unenviable singing style while sharing memorable lessons that can't be obscured by sour notes and botched lyrics.
    Critic Reviews:
"When telling of her mother's button box, the slapstick humor is shoved aside for a serious, nostalgic look at family life imparted through the buttons cut from various garments. McBride-Smith's Texas-accented voice jumps easily among humor, dialogue, and sadness, adding emphasis where needed." (Voya)

Storyteller Donald Davis had a very sensible mother. She had a pretty good idea of what boys would do, so she was always on the lookout. As Davis later learned, always being on the lookout is what mamas do. His vigilant but gentle mother gave her son multiple gifts in life and, as we learn in the end, gifts that do not end with her passing.

    Editorial Reviews:
When North Carolina storyteller Davis was 5 years old, he was sent to the grocery store all by himself. As he returned home, he saw a newspaper being delivered into a neighbor's mailbox. He had always envied those with home-delivered papers, and he decided to take it. Suddenly, out of nowhere came the voice of God - who sounded much like his mama - saying, "Put it back!" Davis shares this in an emotional and breathless voice, just as a little boy would. His mama later explained that she did that to him because "that's what mamas do." His memory of that continues throughout his life as he still follows her sage advice.

FANTASTIC mini autobiography. Just that I bought in "good condition" and the front jacket was everything but that
    tuna fish
    Great for lessons
I listened to this as a kid
Im 16 now but listened to this as a kid OVER AND OVER AGAIN (like every night for maybe 2 years) and loved it. It is such a great memoir and terrifically interesting and totally different than anything you'd expect. All of the stories in this book, the egg tossing, her parents and how she views them, and even her experience with religion are so original and true to character. Her thought about god (she thought that since 'he sees everything', maybe god has a million tvs with everyones life playing on each tv) was what i once though. I remember listening to her say that idea (on the recording of this book) and feeling so much less alone [the first time i ever realized people share same ideas and same ways of thinking - one of the earliest life-changing experiences]. Listening to this made it easy for me to sleep and the recording was so soothing. Also, it is child appropriate without being stupid or fake. I have never come across a memoir like this one and don't expect to. I will love this forever.
    Great as a mentor text!
As an antidote to a wicked case of bronchitis, I've managed to read my way through a stack of books on my nightstand and found a winner: Sing a Song of Tuna Fish, Hard to Swallow Stories From Fifth Grade by Esme Raji Codell, the author of Educating Esme and other books.
It was published in 2004 but I hadn't seen it until last week on the shelf of the Atlantic County Bookmobile. What a treasure! I've been searching for good mentor texts to use with our fifth and sixth grade classes, something that would make the kids and their teachers really "get" the need to focus writing workshop around memoirs--and boy this is it! Esme takes you right into her life as a fifth grader. I think that both kids and adults will be inspired to explore their own childhood experiences after reading this book.
Sing a SOng of Tuna Fish is good for future writers
This book made me Laugh so hard I liked her first book Sahara Special but this is even better. The teacher used thhe book to help us journal and I thought it would be boring but I could not wait for her to read these funny stories out loud and then write my own stories about things like school and grandparents. This author writes about the city in a way that is FOR REAL and not boring and now I write in my journal every day because I want to be a writter. My only comnplaint is this book is not rewally about tuna fish but I dont even like tuna fish so who cares.

A Million Thanks tells the story of Shauna's remarkable achievement and serves as an inspiration to each of us. After you read the letters inside this book, no matter how grateful you already are, you'll have a renewed admiration and respect for the men and women who are risking their lives for us.
    Members Reviews:
    A heart warming story
"People are very opinionated about the war in Iraq. But no matter what your political beliefs are, the fact is that young people these days are risking their lives - and you have to respect that." So says 15-year-old Shauna Fleming, Orange, California high school student.
Fleming decided to "do something" for those serving our country. Her idea was to get her school and others involved in writing letters to service people - 1 million letters.
Many thought this was too big a goal for a freshman, but they were wrong. With the help of students in other Christian schools as well as people of all ages, she was able to collect and then hand deliver the millionth letter to President Bush in November 2004, only seven months after she started.
When Fleming was 13, her family helped prepare a Thanksgiving meal and celebration for families at a nearby military base. So thinking of the military families was not new for the Flemings.
Now Shauna's goal is 1.4 million letters, one for every person in the military service because May is National Military Appreciation Month.
Her book, A Million Thanks, contains 45 of Shauna's favorite letters and drawings as well as stories of how her life has changed since beginning her project. She recounts responses the letters have prompted from service men and women. Amazing young woman, amazing stories of what one committed and energetic person can do to make a difference in a million soldiers' lives.

    A MILLION THANKS
I got this book and was amazed at the story of how this girl put all this together for our troops.
I have some friends that are in the Army in Iraq and I am going to send them a copy. It made me feel good so I am sure my friends will appreciate it.
The only thing I would have liked to see is the book to be longer. The pictures of the letters and cards she received were really great.
I think this book is a great book to give as a gift.
Awesome what small ideas can turn into.
This was an awesome book that showed where an idea from a 15 y-old came from and how it took off.
I disagree with the first review that said it should have included others and their way of showing patriotism because this book was about Shauna and A Million thanks campaign.
As a member of the military, I truly appreciate what she, and the Millions that helped her, were able to achieve.
    I LOVED THIS BOOK
I disagree with the Frenchman. Did we read the same book? Author, Shauna Fleming did an excellent job of telling her story as a 15 year old. The French critic must be rather heartless as the story had me in tears several times. This book is down to earth and gives the reader insights into the problems of running a volunteer organization that rivals a post office. She has inspired thousands including myself.
It's a wonderful, easy reading book.
    Good Start
Good start for a beginner but I would have appreciated seeing other efforts from people around the USA who have also accomplished a lot for the soldiers in this book.

    My 10-year old loved it!
I haven't listened to it yet BUT I had to write. I took this audiobook on our first-ever mother-daughter trip to Africa and my 10-yr-old listened to it three or four times during the trip on her portable player. It was really wonderful for her to have listened to it right before we visited a Jane Goodall chimp reserve in Kenya... she knew as much about Jane and chimps as the guide! The audio book held her attention, presented sophisticated information in a way that was understandable to a mature 10-year-old, fascinated her, entertained her during some interesting and difficult travels and taught her a lot at the same time. It gets all my votes!
    Feels a bit lightweight
I probably misunderstood the ambitions of this title. I think I was hoping for more insight into Goodall's work with primates than this title sets out to give. Basically I was hoping for chimps featuring Jane Goodall and what you get is Jane Goodall featuring chimps. As an inspirational story for children it's probably great but as science or natural history less so. I'm afraid that I also find it offputting when scientists make reference to supernatural beliefs in their writings. Personal prejudice. I'm stacked full of them.
So basically this was interesting but not what I was hoping for when I purchased it. Goodall is a competent narrator as well.
    A life story told
A quite straight forward account of Jane Goodall's life among the chimpanzees in Africa. However amazing her life was, the story isn't very interesting. She does however build a strong case for looking after the nature and that everyone can do something to make a difference.
    Very Interesting
This audio is one the whole family can listen to and enjoy. My family and I learned many things about her life and about chimpanzees. She does a good job reading her own story and is inspiring to listen to.
Held the Attention of the Entire Family
We played this on our Chromecast in the living room. Ages 5, 8, 19, middle aged parents. We were all enthralled. The two youngest are begging to listen to all of her books. The only complaint was my very sensitive son didn't like "all the dead chimps"...but in was done gently and with the emotions appropriate to the death of a good animal with social connections so overall was touching more than disturbing. I teared up at the story of the elderly mama chimp and her loyal son (previously a spoiled brat who ended up being the comfort of her old age). My sensitive son's favorite was the daring rescue of the chimp who fell in the water. My daughter's favorite part was the detailed descriptions of how she earned the trust of the chimps. We definitely plan on listening to the rest of her books after this pleasant first taste! I also really appreciated that she narrated the book herself...I felt like I really got to know her.

    Publisher's Summary:
In 1887, Elizabeth Berry found notoriety throughout the nation after the death of her daughter, perceived by many to be the cruellest of murders. There were many who protested her innocence in the affair, but there were also suspicions surrounding another death related to the nurse - that of her mother.
Suddenly Elizabeth Berry's dark story began appearing darker still. For the first time, we discover the true story behind this infamous case of the first woman to be hanged at Liverpool's Walton Prison.
    Members Reviews:
Wonderful narration by Gordon Griffin and a very compelling story.
Alot of Research has gone into this book. As someone who is particularly interested in True Crimes set in the Victorian era this was always going to be a "Must Buy." Particularly as the villain is a Woman, a Poisoner and a Psychopath. I particularly enjoyed the scenes set in the Courts as well as the Newspaper Reporting. The Letters to the newspapers were fascinating. You really get a glimpse into ordinary people's lives, as well as their awful deaths, through the medium of the criminal justice system. By the end of the book I could see Elizabeth Berry clearly. The poem reading scene was particularly chilling. Scary woman!
    What a Wicked Woman
There are no spoilers here as Miss Berry's guilt is pronounced virtually from the first page. And indeed, she was found guilty in a court of law and sentenced to death. This is real crime and the case put is more about 'why' than 'who' done it.
    Bit repetitive
Really enjoyed it to begin with. Became very repetitive, going over things already told. Felt as if it was just dragging the story out.
