This is more elementary than I thought and already a wee bit dated. Good for beginners.

Easy read

Unfortunately Facebook changed their posting procedures so that if you don't "boost" a post by paying $$$. Your audience most likely won't see it. All of these books need to be rewritten now. The book itself is an easy read and is great for people who are starting out with social media.

A huge help for the startup when it starts up

Derek Lidow's book is excellent for its clarity about the entrepreneurial journey. The title, Startup Leadership, is a bit misleading, because the contents are more about post-startup. Indeed, he uses the term Entrepreneurial Leadership more generally, often initialized as EL.

What is really significant about the book is the clarity of Derek's four stages of enterprise maturity. He makes very clear that from startup, that the enterprise leader needs very different competences at each stage.

1.Stage One: Customer Validation starts once the idea becomes reality and ends as soon as customers commit.

2.Stage Two: Operational Validation starts as customers use the product and ends when processes ensure customer satisfaction.

3.Stage Three: Financial Validation starts when the value proposition delivers on its promise through a viable business model and ends when the company scales and is consistent.

4.Stage Four: Self-Sustainability starts when the leader develops not only new customers, but new products and ends (or never ends) with a process of continuous development of both.

For an entrepreneur to be able to identify the priorities associated with each stage, she must demonstrate an appropriately developing set of skills. Not only that an understanding of the stages will help to ensure that the right things are done at the right time.

While I might not agree with all the traits necessary to an EL that Derek lists, he is very clear about the need for a personal leadership strategy. I value that part of the book particularly, because my journey was one of a struggle with the evolving leadership needs as my own business grew and morphed unconsciously from one stage to the next.

Difficult to listen to, good information

The author repeatedly uses an awkward sentence structure ("Making it difficult to listen to is the sentence structure; increasing the difficulty is the inflection.") Also, the reader uses a repeated rising inflection, alternating with a semi-monotonous high inflection. The makes it hard to follow the flow of concepts, as the reading lacks the normal conclusion indicators of changed inflection.

Baroque sentances and little content

This book was un-listenable to, because of two reasons:

1. The writer was modeling Kant -- overly complicated sentances and fluffy structure mask a lack of content per pge/minute

2. The narration had been processed to enlongate the vowels sounds (perhaps to make it more "comprehensible"?), which rendered it hard to listen to in 1x, 1.5x or 2x speed, and incomprehensible in 3x (because the consonants were hard to make out then). Having listened to books happily in all of those speeds, I am puzzled by what they did to the audio stream to give it that character.

Good advice, poor audio quality

This sounds like it was recorded on a $20 laptop mic - but the content is good. Buy if you're not turned off by monotone narration.

Poor Narration

Its just over an hour audiobook, but I struggled to finish it simply because of the terrible narration. I had to constantly rewind because my mind kept wondering off to other things simply because there was no energy in the narration. The content itself was not very helpful, though because I like to absorb different points of view there were some small benefits I got out of it. All the book focuses on is 12 questions the author in his experience found VCs wanted answered, however his view in my opinion seems outdated in several questions he answered. It does not cover the process on how to get the VCs and close the deal as you would be led to believe in the title.

Solid Advice

Packed with good advice.

As with most books on this topic, this book is packed with good practical advice on the mechanics, business on writing and being and author, how to overcome practical problems, which sacrifices you make to become not just a writer, but a successful, published author. And with the rewards it brings along.

I have read other books on the topic, that had more hands-on demonstration of what needs to be done in the different stages of writing, book launch etc, but this book is still very good and worthwhile.

The narration of this book is excellent, very much in the tone of the written book, making it an enjoyable performance to listen to.

Dull Academic College Thesis - Too Many Citations

Obviously this is just my opinion, but honestly it ranks amongst the worst audio books I've ever bought. As an audio book this sort of thing does not work at all well. It would have been much better to present it as a series of themed index cards or a blog posts.

I'm not questioning the quality of the subject material. However the author's presentation of it in this format was stupefyingly dull. I just could not force myself to process what he was saying and turn it into something valuable and practical I can apply to my life. That is a shame, given the standing of Peter Drucker himself.

The only value I can imagine anyone finding in this work is as a reference manual for others who want to write about Peter Drucker, or study the man's works. It's the sort of thing you'd probably get good marks for in college.

The author's style is passive and jam-packed with endless citations of book titles (including the edition number) and dates. There's little more to the book than that. Everything he writes seems to be interrupted with these citations. If he'd had the guts to provide a strong personal opinion, interpretation and continuous narrative - perhaps with footnotes instead of citations mid paragraph - it would have flowed better and I might have found more value in it.
