    Publisher's Summary:
The president's retreat, Camp David, is one of the safest places in the United States. So why can't the President's son, Luke, and his friends Theo and Callie stay there without Secret Service agents constantly hovering over them, watching their every move? And yet, when an earthquake sets off a raging wildfire, causing a chain reaction that wreaks havoc at Camp David, they are suddenly on their own.
    Now Luke needs a plan:
Debut author Dee Garretson delivers a heart-pounding tween thriller - an action-packed adventure with undeniable suspense.

    An interesting survival story.
Reading books like this one encourage me to be grateful for the life I have. I have no desire to live a life as structured and stifling as the one Luke lives. To be followed almost everywhere by bodyguards or the media would drive me bananas. I like my privacy. It would also be so very easy to become dependent on those around you. This kind of book makes me wonder what I would do in the same situation.
In this book, Luke struggles to find a sense of normalcy with his friend Theo which immediately speaks to the reader's sense of empathy. Garretson does a decent job of creating characters that you care about. The focus of the story is on the survival aspects of the children's situation. I appreciated the fact that she doesn't have the kids do things inconsistent with their personalities. In this sort of book that would be easy to do. Survival stories have a unique sort of challenge, the situation needs to be intense without being impossible. There needs to be hope but without making the things the characters do ludicrous. Wildfire Run has a good balance of challenges emotional, physical, and mental. The thing that I found the most interesting was how the children came up with ways to overcome the challenges in front of them. I enjoy reading about people overcoming hard things. The only thing that I didn't find completely believable was the ending. The children would to my mind need awhile to recover from the incredible stress they had been under, yet they seem to be perfectly normal at the end. Other than that however I enjoyed the story and recommend it to all who enjoy a good adventure/survival story.
    Exciting Read
My original review as appeared on my blog, Boys To Books.
The president's son, Luke, always has an entourage of Secret Service agents following him, even when he goes on vacation to Camp David. Through a series of catastrophic events, Luke and his friends Theo and Callie find themselves separated from the Secret Service agents hired to protect them, and in the dangerous path of a raging wildfire. The three of them must rely on their own ingenuity to outsmart the security measures that were designed to keep away criminals, but now stand in the way of their safety.
This tightly written debut novel by Dee Garretson is a fast paced thriller that will appeal to boys. Each chapter is filled with action that never slows down. The interlacing of technology throughout the novel adds excitement and interest. Highly recommended middle grade novel for boys ages 9-12.
    Wildfire Run
Wildfire Run is a action packed book with a lot of suspense. It's about a kid named Luke who is the president`s
son who goes to a place called Camp David which is where the president somewhat takes a break from his job. Luke makes a friend who's name is Theo that goes there even though he is a normal kid.

Look no further for the perfect book for boys and girls who love fantasy, adventure, and white-knuckle action!
"Can you imagine eternal Darkness, sir?"
So asks the sickly stranger who staggers into Peg Leg Nel's birthday party. Before the man dies, he tells Ray and his friends of a Darkness spreading like wildfire across Kansas, turning good people bad and poisoning anyone who tries to escape. It's clear that though the evil Gog is dead, his devilish machine has survived and is growing stronger.
Now a full-fledged Rambler, Ray leads his friends on a mission into the heart of darkness. Vital to their success is tracking down the legendary Wolf Tree, rumored to be a pathway to the spirit world. Only with one of the tree's limbs can the Nine Pound Hammer be repaired and the Gog's terrible machine finally destroyed. The search for the Wolf Tree grows desperate as the Darkness spreads, threatening Ray, his friends, and all of humanity.
The Wolf Tree is the second fantasy adventure book in John Claude Bemis's series The Clockwork Dark, and adds new layers of myth and magic to Bemis's original take on American tall tales in The Nine Pound Hammer.

It can be a challenge to find good reading material for a tween
My son loves this book. It can be a challenge to find good reading material for a tween. After reading The Nine Pound Hammer my 11 year old could not wait to read the The Wolf Tree. The Wolf Tree gives a deeper look into each character in the series. John Bemis is an amazing author drawing on folklore and fantasy to tell an amazing tale.
    Great
Another great book by Bemis can't wait further next one. As a student and teen I enjoy these books and was excited when the Author came to our own little town of Brevard. and thoroughly enjoyed them. Family friendly
This series of three books is a must read for fairy lovers and provide lots of history on the fairies of Pixie Hallow.. They are very well written and engaging, I was just as interested in them as my daughter was when I read them to her - summer before first grade. She re-read them to herself as a third grader. and thoroughly enjoyed them. Family friendly, content is appropriate for early elementary children and interesting to older children as well.
    Gorgeous!
I like the fairy stories that Gail Levine wrote. They have some of the same characters as Disney's Pixie Hollow movies. But, if you expect these to build on any of the movies, you'll be disappointed.
I've bought these books for David Christiana's illustrations. They are wonderful. They seem very simple at first until you start to notice all of the intricate details. I may have to buy a 2nd set so I can frame my favorites so I don't wear out the book itself.
Fairies and the Quest for neverland
A story with lots of unexpected twists to it. Like the other two Disney Fairies special I find the change in the Fairies looks to the regular series art hard to get use to. What makes this one of the best Fairies books however is the connection between Neverland and the Darling family. Wendy's great great decendant has been passed the kiss that Peter and once given Wendy in the nursery now on a necklace. The magical items allow her to see visions of Never land. Like her mother, grandmother and other Darling kids she looks forward to having her own adventure in Never Land. Unlike most who visits and stay with Peter, Gwen prefers to spend her time in Pixie Hollow. Her visions has allowed her to learn many of their names and their special words like I'D FLY BACKWARD oppose to saying I'M SORRY. This book has the return of Rani Bat that we only see in these hardcover specials and not in the normal fairies book. When Kyo the dragon breaks free from its cage its up to Gwen to help the fairies re capture it even at the risk of loosing her family heirloom the kiss forever.

A volcano is an opening in the earths surface through which molten rock, gases and debris can escape. The mound commonly associated with volcanoes is what remains after eruptions have collected and hardened around this opening.
Volcanoes exist in the mythology of numerous countries, such as Iceland and Japan. Many past cultures, such as the Greeks and the Romans, also had volcano mythology. In fact, the Romans invented the words volcano, taking the word from the island of Volcano just off the south-west coast of Italy. Because it erupted so often, the Romans thought that Vulcan, the god of fire and maker of weapons, had a forge there.

What young person isn't fascinated by volcanoes? This JNR edition of the popular audio encyclopedia from iMinds introduces listeners between the ages of seven and 14 to the science and majesty behind volcanology. Australian actor Todd MacDonald is reminiscent of an engaging geology teacher as he steers listeners from Roman mythology to volcano classification to Mount Vesuvius. He is especially captivating when discussing the latter volcano that buried Pompei. Eerie music accompanies his narration about the Italian city frozen under volcanic ash. Any kids who weren't interested in volcanoes before might be inspired by this installment of iMinds to contrive a vinegar and baking soda eruption as their next science fair project.

    Editorial Reviews:
Sprightly Aussie actress Leah Vandenberg summons young listeners on this tour of the world's rivers, examining their cultural, historical, and environmental importance along the way. Essential to human life, rivers provide their nearby inhabitants with a source of food, water, hygiene, and transportation. They also figure highly in peoples' imaginations, having impacted cultural phenomena ranging from American blues music, as in the case of the Mississippi, to religion, as with India's river Ganges. Likewise, rivers capture our passion for breathtaking natural beauty - whether one visits the Grand Canyon or Victoria Falls, a river runs through it. Upbeat, fluid, and evenly-paced, Vandenberg doesn't neglect the effects of human activity on rivers' environmental wellbeing, as she shares with young listeners a message of awe, curiosity, and responsibility.

    Members Reviews:
Perspective from slave children at the beginning of the Civil War
This is not a story about Civil War battles, strategies, or military campaigns. This is a snatch of history told from the perspective of children born into slavery on a Virginia plantation. It does a good job of bringing the reader into the thoughts and feelings of two siblings as they hear about the coming freedom promised by Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. Both children were sired by the plantation owner and their enslaved, yet willing mother. Even so, the children are slaves and treated as such - property to be used as such, not as human beings. Yet there is a certain bit of humanity shown by the master toward all of his slaves. Most striking to me was the slaves' absence of hope for more than the most rudimentary desires that was apparently common to the enslaved population.
The author is an African American. I am a white adult male who grew up during the race riots of the 1960's. I give cudos to to author's balanced portrayal of the dark time of slavery in this country.
    Disappointing Historical Fiction
Although this historical novel has engaging characters, the whole premise of the book is historically inaccurate. If the story had taken place in 1863 instead of 1862, then the desire of Rosco to become a Union soldier might have been more credible. How could editors not check basic facts such as when Black solders were recruited for the Union Army and the date of the Battle of Vicksburg? I am mystified by the necessity of Rosco to travel by the Underground Railroad when Northern Virginia was full of Union troops. In 1862, American Americans who escaped from their masters fled to the protection of the Union Army where they became Contraband of War. Some of the contrabands subsequently became Union soldiers. Why would a slave go to Pennsylvania when it was a short trip to Union lines? I question the branding of the the Parnell slaves. Parnell is not portrayed as inhuman and at the time of the Civil War, branding was considered an atrocity. Felons, escaped slaves, or army deserters might be branded, but it seems unlikely in the story as presented. I also wondered about the geography of the book. From the map, bodies for a medical college at Winchester would have to be transported a long distance during wartime. It is upsetting that the book could receive good reviews from a number of prominent reviewers when it is so inaccurate. I am concerned that a story like this does more harm for children than good. In Virginia, we have Standards of Learning tests where children must know accurate history. They will not learn it from Silent Thunder.
Silent Thunder , A review by Lisa C.
This book tells of an exciting adventure about a 12-year-old slave, Summer, and her 13-year-old brother, Roscoe. They find out from a wise old slave named Thea, that everyone has a "silent thunder." Summer wants to learn how to read, which is forbidden, but Roscoe is still teaching her.
