    Title: Let the Devil Sleep
    Author: John Verdon
    Narrator: Robert Fass
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 16 hrs and 32 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-31-12
    Publisher: Dreamscape Media, LLC
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 217 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
The most decorated homicide detective in NYPD history, Dave Gurney is still trying to adjust to his life of quasi-retirement in upstate New York when a young woman who is producing a documentary on a notorious murder spree seeks his counsel. Soon after, Gurney begins feeling threatened: a razor-sharp hunting arrow lands in his yard, and he narrowly escapes serious injury in a booby-trapped basement. As things grow more bizarre, he finds himself reexamining the case of The Good Shepherd.
Mocked even by some who'd been his supporters, Dave realizes the killer is too clever to ever be found. The only gambit that may make sense is also the most dangerous - to make himself a target and get the killer to come to him.
    Critic Reviews:
"Verdon...shows there's much more that can be done with the serial killer plot in his breakneck, knockout third Dave Gurney whodunit.... The tension is palpable on virtually every page of a story that perfectly balances the protagonist's complex inner life with an elaborately constructed puzzle." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    Ending disappoints, but....
I came across John Verdon's second book first, "Shut Your Eyes". Half way through, it was so good I headed to the computer to find a copy of the first one, "Think of a Number". Both were so far beyond excellent I even found myself writing a gushing email of appreciation to Verdon himself -- who, like most kindly authors, wrote a very nice reply. Huh!
Those two books were absolutely outstanding -- completely innovative plots, an appealing protagonist with a nasty shrew of a wife (sorry, but she was) so there was someone to hate, as well as a question to ponder: Why would a guy like that put up with this nasty lady? Anyway, I',m delighted to see that now, all three books are available from Audible.
"Let the Devil Sleep" isn't quite as good as the first two -- but that's probably only because the first two were so outstanding. I was disappointed in the ending -- in fact, when I sensed that matters were drawing to a head, I had two hours left. I deliberately saved a block of time so I could listen, uninterrupted, wanting the full impact of the resolution. I wouldn't have needed to do that. It ended with more of a whimper than a bang.
Still, it's a darn good book. The moment Dave Gurney gets involved with that lissome journalism student, you know there's trouble ahead -- I was wrong about what kind of trouble, but not about its intensity. We get more of Wife Madeline, who this time has her shrewish nature tamed a bit, if not her wardrobe. This time, she comes across much more sympathetically -- still moody, ethereal and remote, but her nasty side was kept undercover for the most part. And we get Kim, the nudnik journalism student, who has a way of getting what she wants, no matter what, which is what sets up the story in the first place. Middle aged, retired detectives, really should be more careful about giving in to the pleas of female college students. But then, of course, there wouldn't have been a book and that would be a tragedy.
I recommend this book very highly, and while you don't have to read or listen to the first two first, it would help, if nothing else to see how the characters keep evolving.
Finally, Verdon might consider publishing a book of Madeline's recipes.

    A fun listen
Although I have read two of his books in the distant past, I have never been a fan of G.M. Ford's detective/crime novels. Thicker Than Water is much better than I expected. It has a great mix of action, humor and suspense. Patrick Lawlor does a fine job of narration.
great exciting book! action and humor
great exciting book with action and humor. well done! kudos to Ford and Lawlor for the effort.
    Ford is Terrific
Another great book featuring Leo and the gang. Patrick Lawlor gives another great narration. Now if someone would get books 5 and 6 narrated by PL. I would be happy indeed.
    Good hard-boiled
This was a pretty good yarn with some funny moments and situations. The added narration was very good.
If you like Leo Waterman. . .
    G. M. Ford's PI Leo Waterman is one of a kind. He's smart, stubborn, intuitive, and saunters through life to his own unique rhythm. His cohorts, also unique in the annals of sleuthdom, are charming and entertaining. As this is book 7, I would highly recommend reading the earlier books first if possible.
I can't fault Patrick Lawlor for his skill at narration. However, his voice is so wrong for Leo.

Late winter, and police detective Jake Hines is beginning to feel the effects of light deprivation; its not only in the edginess of the citizens of Rutherford, Minnesota, but also in the escalating battle hes having with his girlfriend, Trudy. Sitting in headquarters talking about the winter depression may not make it go away, but it does offer Jake a chance to air some of his feelings. Then two emergency calls come in at the same time.
A child has been critically injured in the yard of his house, and something approaching the proportions of an old-fashioned gang fight has broken out in the parking lot of Central High. As the department mobilizes to deal with these two events, Jake is told that the little boy is dead and that the emergency room doctor attributes the death to a gunshot wound. The witnesses all state, however, that there was no gun at the scene, and no one heard a shot. To complicate matters, one of the ringleaders in the school brawl was the chiefs son and the first boy he hit has gone to the hospital.

    I liked it!
Would you consider the audio edition of Inmate 1577 to be better than the print version?
Considering I haven't read the print version of "Inmate 1577" I would have to say yes, I consider the audio version better(forgive my sarcasm). Even if I had read the print version I'd prefer the audio version better because I prefer audio books over print.
What other book might you compare Inmate 1577 to and why?
Wow, I haven't read too many police procedurals so me, personally, I can only compare it too Michael connely's, "The Black Echo" which might not be that far off-both books involve police searching for a serial killer and both books have a fair amount of "edge of your seat" suspense so ya, I'll stick with that comparison.
What about Christina Traisters performance did you like?
Christina did a pretty good job with voices meaning she didn't totally butcher any accents and the men sounded like men and the women sounded like women so she did alright. However, from time to time she did sound a bit monotone but it wasn't so bad that it lessened the audio experience for me. She was O.K.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
No, I can't say I was really moved by the book but I did enjoy it and it kept my attention throughout which isn't easy to do considering the length of the book.
    Any additional comments?
    Great deal for the price!
    Great read
Where does Inmate 1577 rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
    high
What other book might you compare Inmate 1577 to and why?
another great book in the collection
What about Christina Traisters performance did you like?
    Excellent narrator!
    Any additional comments?
Great book, looked the tie to the others but still holds it's own. Very action filled and unexpected twists.
    Uneven.
What did you like best about Inmate 1577? What did you like least?
Over all two good stories that meet. Inmate and son story was better than the police story. I found that pretty uneven. Decisions made be the heroine were often not believable. I didn't warm up to her.
If youve listened to books by Alan Jacobson before, how does this one compare?
    First.
Did Christina Traister do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
I liked much of her narration except the dramatic yelling.
Was Inmate 1577 worth the listening time?
    Yes
Proven Not Guilty and Found Guilty
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Listening to the book, Inmate 1577, was time well-spent.

Narration puts a stop to listening
This review concerns only the narration. This may be a great book, but I simply cannot get past the narrator's technique. I really tried. I was just a little nervous at first with the narration (every sentence has the same stress: (da-da-da-da DA), but I thought I could get used to it for the sake of the story.
Then, less than 2 minutes into the recording comes the voice of 'Milo.' A parody of 'hard-bitten cop.' Almost unbearably unconvincing. Okay, well, maybe he won't be a main character. Then comes the principal, Linda Overstreet, Ed.D. OMG! It was fascinating to try to figure out what kind of audio manipulation created this voice. and what, exactly, was supposed to be conveyed by her absurd breathlessness (sexy? overmedicated? just weird?). I knew there would be children's voices coming up, so I masochistically listened on and, yep, distractingly bad.
It's hard to do voices. Really hard. But not impossible. Sorry this book wasn't matched up with a more skilled reader.
    Narrator
I really did not care for the naration of this story. I did not like the verbal portrayal of Milo, and found it 'grated' on my nerves.
Should have been a short story
The basic story was good... all the other "junk" thrown in was distracting, diluting and depleting to my patience. The narrator was horrendous, as was noted here by others. His pronounciations of some words were baffling. Pat Metheny (musician) pronounced Pat Methanee (as in methadone). There are several more, each painful and without logic.
    Good book, excruciatingly awful reading.
What did you like best about Time Bomb? What did you like least?
Another good one by Kellerman. It's been years since i read it in print, but this narrator is so criminally bad that it's difficult to fairly judge the merits of the book itself. Milo often sounds like a vary bad imitation of Michael Keaton's "Betelgeuse," & the voices of other characters vary wildly. The women are cringeworthy. The only character who sounded 1/2way decent (the rabbi) was a minor one. The reader's voice often sounds so strained I kept getting a vision of him with fold of skin being twisted in a pair of vice-grips. VERY unfortunate that 'Alexander Adams' (a.k.a. Grover Gardner) didn't do all the Alex Delaware books.
What didn???t you like about Jeff Harding???s performance?
Anything, everything. His voice, accents, performance, timing, and characterizations seemed middle school level at best. I will in the future avoid this reader like the plague.
    Just an okay read...
Would you try another book from Jonathan Kellerman and/or Jeff Harding?
I've read almost everything Jonathan Kellerman.
How could the performance have been better?
I prefer John Rubenstein as a narrator.

    What Fun!!!
This is a fun story...I didn't get that from the introduction of the book. But it was really really funny in places. I loved these characters. And they were characters alright!
    TSTL(Julie)
OMG- The main character - Julie is TSTL ! I wanted to kill her myself ! The narrator's southern voice for Julie ,her mother ,sister and Mac's partner about drove me up the wall ! I love Mac and his dog - I would love to take them home with me.
Great Book But Badly Done Southern Accents
Would you listen to To Trust a Stranger again? Why?
Yes. I love the story and love the way Karen Robards writes.
What did you like best about this story?
    The plot and the romance.
What three words best describe Laura Hickss voice?
    terrible southern accent
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The climax of the story was riveting and so well written.
    Any additional comments?
Ms Hicks has a beautiful voice but she should stay away from southern accents. The character voices were inconsistent and sometimes confusing as to which character was speaking. The southern belle character sounded more ethnic than southern. The character in Drag sounded stupid and the African Americans accents were ridiculous.
    Good story; poor narrator
To Trust A Stranger is one of Robard's better RS books from earlier days. There are some funny lines from the H but the h is less impressive, her character made even less attractive by Hick's awful narrating voice.

    Publisher's Summary:
Once, Dr. Emil Euler Ganz was a preeminent astrophysicist with a world-renowned reputation. But then he vanished without any warning to his family or colleagues. Fifteen years later, he reappeared as "Father Jupiter", the founder and charismatic leader of the scientific cult, The Order of the Rings. And now he's dead - a vial of sleeping pills and an empty bottle of vodka standing near his lifeless body.
Was Ganz's death an accident? Suicide? Or did someone hasten Jupiter prematurely out of this world? These are the questions LAPD Lieutenant Peter Decker and his Homicide team are determined to answer as they enter the cult's fortresslike compound. But the dead leader's four "privileged" attendants make it clear that the police are not welcome there - and the mysterious disappearance of two of the Order's members, including a child, turns an already uncomfortable situation even uglier and more incendiary.
Decker will need more than the wisdom and support of his wife, Rina Lazarus, to defuse a ticking time bomb of jealousy, greed, bizarre hidden pasts, and deadly secrets - one that could explode at any time into mayhem so pernicious that it threatens to destroy a multitude of misguided lives - and scores of helpless, innocent children as well.
    Members Reviews:
    Good listeni
Good story. Can't listen to book with children present because of language and graphic content
    dull mystery; good family drama
The mystery, or exploration of the crime is lacking. In fact I would call it boring. Plus Rina is missing for most of the book which is disappointing.
However, the relationship between Peter and Rina's boys is more fully explored than in any of the previous novels. I think perhaps this story exposed some problems that will be explored in the future books of the series. As a parent I look forward to seeing a bit of the tensions that parents experience as that makes the characters more real to me.
    Great series!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, I love this series by Faye Kellerman
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
The plots are usually a bit predictable but I love how the Lt Detective Decker solves them.
    Which scene was your favorite?
    Too many to mention.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
    The hospital scene.
    Any additional comments?
Mitch Greenberg is an awesome speaker. He really gets into each character. His voice fluctuations really help determine and create each character. A fabulous reader!!!! I would read any book he read.
    I love this series!
What more can I say about this series that I havent already said? I love it!
Book 11 is right in line with previous instalments: interesting updates in lives of Peter & Rina and their children, plus a riveting criminal case in Peters work life.
I have to admit that I dont always care for the cop story lines, but the developments in their personal storylines are very compelling; it's definitely that aspect that keeps me coming back for more!

Not much of a review I know, but I find it really difficult to critique series by the time youre up to Book 10.
    this book has "tooth"
A mystery should have good twists, turns and surprises, and this one does. I would go so far as to say that the mystery in this book is more fully explored that the crime in most of the nine previous novels.
I have always loved the exploration of the main characters' personal lives. That is my favorite aspect of her books. And this one is no different. In fact, in this one we learn more about the kids' lives which is fantastic.

    Publisher's Summary:
Anna Pigeon has been a ranger with the National Park Service for many years, but she had a very different life before tragedy sent her west seeking something new. Now Nevada Barr finally tells the previously untold story of Annas first foray into the wild, and the case that helped shape her into the ranger she became.
Thirty-five years old, fresh off the bus from New York City, and nursing a shattered heart, Anna Pigeon takes a decidedly unglamorous job as a seasonal employee of the Glen Canyon National Recreational Area. On her day off, she goes hiking into the park never to return. Her co-workers think shes simply moved on - her cabin is cleaned out and her things gone. Anna herself wakes up, trapped at the bottom of a dry natural well, naked, without supplies and no clear memory of how she got into this situation.
As she slowly pieces together her memory, it soon becomes clear that someone has trapped her there, in an inescapable prison, and that no one knows that she is even missing. Plunged into a landscape and a plot she is unfit and untrained to handle, Anna Pigeon must muster the courage, strength, and will to live that she didnt even know she still possessed in order to survive, outwit, and triumph.
    Members Reviews:
    Great book, no question. But....
The Rope is everything you expect from the best of Nevada Barr -- and then some. Lots of white-knuckle moments, when you have to stop whatever you're doing and just listen, afraid to even move lest you miss a word. Lots of interesting stuff about the outdoor life, hiking, 'canyoneering', about Lake Powell and 'Dangling Rope'.
I had some trepidation: first, not hearing the voice of Barbara Rosenblat took a little getting used to. Rosenblat's wry, little-bit-hoarse voice, tinged with good humored, self-deprecating sarcasm, has come to mean 'Anna Pigeon' to me, and I thought I'd miss that. But no, Joyce Bean does a very credible job -- in fact, it might have been smart to have someone else read this 'prequel' to the rest of the books, when Anna was young and foolish.
Foolish? Indeed. Anna as a young woman proves herself not to have been any different from any number of other young protagonists -- an older and wiser Anna would never have gone off -- twice! -- on dangerous hiking/canyoneering trips with questionable people, when she knew very well that someone out there had tried to kill her several times. Okay, okay, so sweet young protagonists have to do those kinds of things, because if they didn't, there wouldn't be much of a story. Still, for the canny Anna we've come to know through the other books, it took some adjustment to think she'd be dumb enough, naive enough, to do such a fool thing.
So it's a great book. I enjoyed it. That said, I'm starting to see why it is that I'm liking the more sophisticated quasi-cozies these days than the kind of hard-boiled stories like this one. Why? There's too much animal torture involved. Authors can't seem to stay away from it. Look: humans are fair game in these books. They fight, they die, we know it's just a story. Most of us probably have never met someone who actually murdered someone else. But to include too much animal torture gives me the willies -- I have a feeling that this is giving too many sick people out there ideas. I don't like it. Leave the animals alone.

    Publisher's Summary:
A spiderweb of dangerous relationships is at the heart of this daring new novel from the #1 New York Times-bestselling author.
Kinsey on Kinsey: "I know there are people who believe you should forgive and forget. For the record, I'd like to say I'm a big fan of forgiveness as long as I'm given the opportunity to get even first."
A woman with a murky past who kills herself-or was it murder? A dying old man cared for by the son he pummeled mercilessly. A lovely woman whose life is about to splinter into a thousand fragments. A professional shoplifting ring racking up millions in stolen goods. A brutal and unscrupulous gangster. A wandering husband, rich and powerful. A spoiled kid awash in gambling debt thinking he can beat the system. A lonely widower mourning the death of his lover, desperate for answers that may be worse than the pain of his loss. An elegant but ruthless businessman whose dealings are definitely outside the law: the spider at the center of the web.
And Kinsey Millhone, whose thirty-eighth-birthday gift is a punch in the face that leaves her with two black eyes and a busted nose.
    V: Victim. Violence. Vengeance.
