    Format: Unabridged
Length: 15 hrs and 21 mins

Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
Vast wealth offers London defense attorney Philip Kennford a lot of things: a gorgeous house with a pool in the backyard, connections in the top echelons of society, a wardrobe worthy of Milan runways. But his money doesnt provide a happy marriage, or good relationships with his twin daughters...and it does nothing to protect his family when someone brutally murders his wife and daughter in their own home.
When Detective Constable Maeve Kerrigan arrives at the scene, the two survivors - Philip and his second-favorite daughter, Lydia - both claim to have seen nothing, but its clear right away that this is an unhappy family accustomed to keeping secrets. Maeve soon finds herself entangled in a case with a thousand leads that all seem to point nowhere, and it doesnt help that her boss, whom she trusts more than almost anyone, is starting to make decisions that Maeve finds questionable at best.
In The Last Girl, Jane Casey once again demonstrates her ability to write vivid, three-dimensional characters and spin a gripping, unpredictable mystery.
    Critic Reviews:
"Maeve Kerrigan [is] a fascinating and plausible character.... What she has is persistence, integrity, and emotional intelligence, and a very deft way of insinuating herself into a readers affections." (The Irish Independent)

Liked It But New Readers Shouldn't Start Here
Half a family is killed in a bloody violent attack. The mother and one twin daughter are slaughtered. The father is struck on the head and left unconscious. The other daughter discovers the bodies and calls 999 before collapsing. Detective Constable Maeve Kerrigan and her superior DI Josh Derwent arrive on the scene to help with the investigation.
Digging into the details of the lives of Philip Kennford, his wife Vita and their two daughters reveals an extremely dysfunctional family. Kennford, a criminal lawyer, has enemies both among his clients and the victims of clients he has represented. He is also a philanderer and a less than than admirable family. Vita is willing to take any action to keep her marriage intact.
Meanwhile story lines from earlier books in the series concerning Maeve's relationship with another member of the force and the struggle between a jailed mob leader and a rival weave their ways through the plot. These plot strands are the reason I suggest that a reader go back to the first book in the series and read forward.
I found this entry in the series better written than the first book and I'm looking forward to the next one.
The narrator is quite competent and easy to listen to. I have no complaints about production values.
What happened ? this is a train wreck
I really enjoyed the first two books then this one came along and boom....thud...splat! Every single character is angry, bitter and the narrator makes them all sound like little point brats. I cannot imagine the author actually believes everyone in the serious crimes squad actually speaks to each other like this let alone to the public.
Weaker plot than previous books too means that it's bye bye Maeve....I hardly knew thee.
    Avoid.
    Good story, cartoonish narration
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I would recommend the print version.

    Fun to Listen
This series is fun although this one took a long time getting to the point.
Story and narrator are satisfyingly wonderful
I've always loved to read the tea shop mysteries by Laura Childs. Now, when I listen to them as audio books the characters seem like old friends. Barbara McCulloh's narration of this novel is not only spot on but very lovely. Ms. McCulloh has developed the voices for each character so well and, to me, it always seems like magic how the really good narrators weave in an out of each voice with such ease, as she does here. I thoroughly enjoyed this production and look forward to many more.
    Voice
Voice sounds too old and makes theo sound silly and dumber than when you read the book.

    Publisher's Summary:
Now that plus-sized P.I. Savannah Reid has finally walked down the aisle, she's ready for a romantic island getaway with new husband Dirk Coulter. The trip is supposed to be a blissful week of rum drinks and sunshine - but finding a dead body on the beach can be a real killjoy. Welcome to the honeymoon from hell....
Savannah and Dirk were hoping for a little honeymoon excitement, but eye witnessing a cold blooded murder wasn't exactly what they had in mind. To their surprise, the recently deceased is none other than Amelia Northrop, the popular L.A. anchorwoman whose super sexy looks landed her a super wealthy husband. Savannah's no expert, but she's pretty sure Amelia won't be hosting tonight's evening news; she'll be the lead story.
When the local police make it clear that they don't want Savannah's help, she decides to do a little digging on her own - and what she discovers could blow the case wide open. It seems Amelia led a far more twisted life than her cheery on-screen persona suggested, and crossed more than a few powerful people along the way. The question is, who hated Amelia enough to shoot her dead in broad daylight? Savannah isn't sure, but she suspects Amelia found out the hard way that fate has a way of settling old scores - and karma can be a girl's worst enemy....

    Another Savannah success
Savannah has survived her wedding, and her visiting family, and is headed off with new husband, Dirk, to a nearby island for her honeymoon . Unfortunately, soon after arriving, they witness the murder of a local news reporter on the beach. Their first impressions of the local police force compel them to investigate on their own. Her team and family at their side, this is another amazing story from G.A.Mckevett.
I love cozy mysteries, and the Savannah Reid series is one of my favorites. Savannah is a real woman, with real curves, and mirrors my love of chocolate. Mckevett provides lots of laughs with the quirky Reid clan. Any author who is up to book 18 in a series must struggle to keep her characters fresh and compelling, but there is no evidence of that in this book. Savannah, Dirk, Granny Reid, and all the inhabitants of the series are still very entertaining. The mystery is well done, and the ending satisfying.
I have read all the books in the series, but I believe each can stand on it's own. If you want to start here, I think you will enjoy this book.
Another MUST "REID" by G.A. McKevett
What can I say? I've been a sucker for Savannah Reid since I picked up her first book and laughed while reading the first page. The characters are like family, and picking up a new book is like a family reunion.
In "Killer Honeymoon", nothing stops the Moonlight Magnolia Detective Agency from finding a killer. Not even the honeymoon of their lead detective. Savannah has finally married her ex-partner, best friend, and now the love of her life. It only took them half their lives to open their hearts to each other. Now, nothing will stop them from enjoying their new life together. Not even being witnesses to a murder.
While on their romantic honeymoon get-away, Savannah sees a woman being chased by something or someone and, of course, her and Dirk go to investigate. Unfortunately, they are too late.

Title: Death on a Pale Horse
Subtitle: Sherlock Holmes on Her Majesty's Secret Service
    Author: Donald Thomas
    Narrator: John Telfer
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 37 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-13-13
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 43 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
In a momentous period of British history, Donald Thomas' latest Sherlock Holmes adventure pits the great detective and his faithful biographer, Dr. John Watson, against an international conspiracy led by a disgraced English officer.
Colonel Hunter Moran bears upon him the "Mark of the Beast"; his satanic ingenuity leaves a spectacular trail of devastation. It runs from the annihilation of a British armored column by Zulu tribesmen - armed only with shields and spears - to a life-and-death struggle on the sinking passenger steamerComtesse de Flandre.
The heir to the French empire lies dead in the African dust. Europe is brought to the brink of war by forged dispatches, designed to enrich gun-runners and assassins. The gold fields and diamond mines of South Africa become the playground of organized crime. Only the detective genius of Holmes can prove a match for the unfolding criminality of Moran and his associates. With Watson and Mycroft at his side, Sherlock Holmes again demonstrates that although the powers of the state and the underworld may try to overpower him, they will never out-think his splendid analytical mind at the height of its powers.
    Critic Reviews:
"Master pasticher Thomas demonstrates that his gifts at creating new Holmes short stories...extend to the harder task of sustaining character, atmosphere, and plot over a full-length novel, something that Conan Doyle himself struggled with.... As with the best emulations of the originals, Thomas maintains both the proper tone and spirit, while presenting new facets of both the doctor and the detective that ring true." (Publishers Weekly)

Captivating Sttle and Story Line !
I seldomly read fiction books ; However, I stumbled upon one of the Author's books of Holmes short stories, that were very well done, so I decided to read one of the new full lenght novels. After completing the reading of this book, I knew that I had made a good decision. After starting the book, I found it nearly impossible to stop listening and go off to other things. This book allows Dr. Watson to have a role in the story, other than being Holmes story teller , companion, and water carrier. Holmes comes across in a more human role, while maintaining his feeling of superiority and demonstrating the arrogance he has always possessed. I am going to purchase the Other holmes books written by this author as an addition for my library.
    A Real Sherlock Holmes Mystery
A long time a go I read a collection of Sherlock Holmes mysteries in a big hard cover book that I borrowed from the library of my Great Aunt. I am sure that it was a first edition but where it is now I have no idea. I remember being riveted with the action and confounded by the mystery and amazed at Sherlock's observations.
I was no less riveted, confounded and amazed by this book. I can highly recommend it and plan to read more modern interpretations of Sherlock Holmes mysteries. They appeal to my gothic nature without the need of zombies and the like.
    Excellent Story
What did you love best about Death on a Pale Horse?
I have been a long time fan of Sherlock Holmes. I found the story to be well written with very few things that wouldn't fit within one written by Doyle. The story leads in a completely new direction; which was refreshing after reading the standard ripper explanations.

Attorney Sasha McCandless is back in Irretrievably Broken. Within days, a second partner is murdered, her husband also accused. Sasha doesn't practice criminal defense, so she's suspicious when her former firm asks her to represent Ellen's husband. Owing Prescott a favor, she takes the case and soon finds herself representing not one, but both, of the so-called Lady Lawyer Killers. The long hours jeopardize her relationship with Leo Connelly when he needs her most. That's the least of Sasha's troubles, though, because what she doesn't know is that the real killer is waging a vendetta for a past case gone wrong. And there's one more lawyer on his list.

    Interesting mystery
I read the reviews and there were so many complaints about the narrator I hesitated listening to this book. I'm glad I did. Karen's performance was OK and the story was more important than the presentation. I was on a long auto trip so it was a good story to keep me company.

Good Book. Less than stellar reader
Would you try another book from M. M. Kaye and/or Soneela Nankani?
Yes for M M Kaye, and No for Soneela Nankani
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
It would have if I could of gotten past the reader. This book was not new to me. I have been a fan of M M Kaye's books for a long time and have read this on more than one occasion.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Soneela Nankani?
    Davina Porter or
Kate Reading( good readers must not only have the voice but the acting chops.Oh my goodnes what a Davina Porter would have done with these books.)
Do you think Death in the Andamans needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
Well, since M M Kaye died in 2002 I don't think that is going to happen, besides sequels are usually not very good. This book had a good ending and was complete.
If you had asked that of The Far Pavillians I would say it could have gone on forever. I would be very happy.I love M M Kaye and wished this book had gotten a better treatment. She deserves a well known and experienced reader.
    Any additional comments?
The person or team choosing these readers is not very good.I hate to say this. I bought these immediately as they came out with such excitement. I didn't want to be negative.I love audible. Most of the books I have bought have been very good. The readers of Death in Berlin and Death in Cyprus were pretty good, especially Death in Cyprus.I will be watching out for the other two and be sure not to buy any thing they read.
    Not M. M. Kaye's Best
To be honest, I was bored to tears and couldn't finish this book. It didn't help that a book full of English characters was read by an American narrator. It was all just off.
An awful choice of narrator ruins this book.
M.M. Kay's books are full of the exotic atmosphere of distant lands in the days of the
British Empire. It is hard to understand why Audible can not find a British narrator to read them. This book is poorly read by an American. Ms. Kaye's deserves better. Please Audible fix this.
    Great book and good reader
This is yet another of MM Kaye's great mysteries. As usual, the characters are interesting, the storyline has tension, humor, romance, and many twists and turns. And MM Kaye describes the islands so well that you can see them clearly in your mind's eye. And, Soneela Nankani is a darn good reader. At first, it threw me off that this book full of British people was being read in an American accent.

Then, a gubernatorial candidate is assassinated in broad daylight at a campaign rally. Could the cases be related? To complicate Silva's investigation, a criminal with a very bad grudge against the Chief Inspector has been released from prison and is plotting ugly revenge.
    Members Reviews:
    Great mystery - great setting.
Recommended. Strong writing, great narration, smart mysteries - I really enjoy this Mario Silva series, set in Brazil. Setting gives it some great "flavor!' - and it's hard to beat a great revenge novel. This quote says it well:
"Perfect Hatred is a perfect thriller. No one writes the cold glint of evil in bright sunlight the way Leighton Gage does. And there's enough evil hereand heroism, toofor three lesser books."
Timothy Hallinan, Edgar-nominated author of the Poke Rafferty thrillers and the Junior Bender mysteries
    Great plotlines and action
but I really would have liked more individuation in the voices of the characters. Almost all the dialog was in that whispered conspiratorial tone of voice, no matter which character or the nature of the conversation. I suppose it would be a challenge for any narrator to do justice to such an international caste of characters, but realistically I think most of this dialog would benefit from a more assertive voice.
    "Hi Ho Silva, A Way"
If you could sum up Perfect Hatred in three words, what would they be?
Note: you must listen at 1.25X speed so that the action and great narration of Jonathan Davis equals.
Good Complex Drama. I will now have to check out J.D. recording of the rest of this series. Wonderful !
What was one of the most memorable moments of Perfect Hatred?
When Silva and sidekick are in the Iquizsu falls helicopter.
Note: I purchased this book due to Jonathan Davis being an exquisite reader of any book set in a Latin country. His suburb knowledge of Spanish enables him to float into a Latin name or description and out again. It is great.
    Which scene was your favorite?
I have been to the Argentina side of the great Iquizsu falls so the wonderful description of the area made me feel like I was right there in the action.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I had tried to listen to this book once before, 1 x speed, and thought it was too slow.
Since we now can listen at the wonderful new speed 1.25x, it makes so many books come to real life and the action matches what the author intended.
    Any additional comments?
I am re-listening to many of my good mysteries at this new speed, WOW!
    Kind of a snooze fest
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Don't know if it was the narrator or the story, but it just doesn't grab you and make you want to keep listening.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
He does voices very well, but overall, his manner of narration makes you want to take a nap in most places. If he would have read the book with the same enthusiasm he shows in places, it would have been much better. He does have a very soothing voice, but this is supposed to be action? Right? but not so much the way it was narrated.

Two years after Wolfes retirement, his past returns with deadly intent
It wasnt Nero Wolfes idea for Orrie Cather to kill himself, but the great detective gave his blessing to his longtime associates plan. Cather had killed three people, and it was only fair to pay the price. Though Wolfe reacted to Cathers death with his characteristic calmness, prize assistant Archie Goodwin could see the rotund genius of West 35th Street was shaken to his well-fed core. Wolfe decided his sleuthing days were finished. The detectives retirement lasts until the day Maria Radovich walks through his townhouse door.
She is the daughter of Milos Stefanovic, New York Symphony conductor and long-ago compatriot of Wolfes. Like Wolfe, Stefanovic spent his youth as a freedom fighter in the mountains of Montenegro. The conductor has been receiving death threats, and Wolfe agrees to come out of retirement to help his old friend. But before he can attack the case, Stefanovic is murdered, and for the first time in years, Wolfe and Goodwin must go to war.
    Members Reviews:
    OK, but nothing special
Would you consider the audio edition of Murder in E Minor to be better than the print version?
No, not at all. Archie and Wolfe sound a certain way to me thanks to the narration of Michael Pritchard and the Nero Wolfe series on A&E. While L.J. Ganser does an adequate job of reading the story, I'm afraid I've been spoiled by Pritchard's Wolfe characterization.
What did you like best about this story?
Only that it is a new Wolfe story.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
He could have studied Michael Pritchard's performance of Nero Wolfe.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
    Not particularly.
    Any additional comments?
This is a good first effort in bringing Wolfe back to print. In my opinion however, the narration leaves much to be desired.
Not Rex Stout, but a close approximation
Although this Nero Wolfe adventure was not written by Rex Stout, Robert Goldsborough did a good job of capturing the full flavor of Stout's hero. Our only complaint was that the narrator was not Michael Prichard, who had narrated all of the original Nero Wolfe stories so beautifully.
    Just love Nero
I have read and watched Nero Wolf stories for years, can't get enough! Reader amazingly good, a little iffy on one female voice but still got it down on Nero and Archy. Could see the whole thing in my mind !
Nero Wolfe - One of A Kind
I like mysteries that have unique characters. It was enjoyable to read another tale of master detective (when he feels like it) Nero Wolf and his assistant Archie Goodwin. Wolfe raises orchids, eats very well, drinks beer and solves crimes when he finds one that interests him. Archie Goodwin does all the "legwork", The stories are told by Archie.
This was an enjoyable read. Narrator L.J. Ganser is an excellent voice for Archie. His narration adds a lot to the story.
There is no explicit violence or an excess of rude language.
    Not Sure
I was not sure that I would like someone else writing a Nero Wolfe story.
But, I was surprised and enjoyed the story and Mr Goldsborough style.
I think if you are a Nero Wolfe fan, you should enjoy this book.

    Great new series!
Would you listen to Aloha, Lady Blue again? Why?
Yes. it's a really good story with a fast-paced action, mixed with just enough humor to balance it all.
    Any additional comments?
Someone used to send me computer lnks to Charles Memminger's humorous column from the Honolulu paper, and I loved reading them. I had noticed I had not gotten one for a while, so was thrilled when I saw he had written this book. Wondering if he would be as talented with a full-length book, eagerly downloaded it.
I am happy to say it is excellent. He has created Stryker MacBride, an ex-reporter who lives on his houseboat and gets drawn into the crime that originally led to his having been shot when he had been investigating it several years previously. Danger, tough guys, sex--the usual ingredients of this genre of beach bum sleuths, combined with one of the freshest touches of humor found in recent books. Not my usual reading, but bought just because it was written by Memminger. I found it everything I had hoped for and more. I would just say that at times the narration was a little uneven, but it did not detract.

    Any additional comments?
The author likes to use modern invective but once you get over that, this is well worth reading. And, you might learn something about our 50th state that is seldom mentioned. This author puts personalities to the characters from the past, instead of just talking in generalities. The past affects the present and it does so on a personal level. Thanks guy you did a good job .

Three years ago, working vice for the NYPD, Dan Champion uncovered a sex slavery ring run by a kingpin known only as the Fat Woman. Obsessed with bringing her down, Champion infiltrated a world of sexual obsession and perversity. He broke the case, but the case also broke him. He started taking drugs and soon began to form hallucinations...a dead child prowling the streets of New York...a beautiful woman named Samantha who would have given him the love he always wanted - if she'd only been real. Now Champion is a small-town detective, chasing burglars and juvenile delinquents, hanging out at the local tavern where he is romancing a waitress.
The ghosts and hallucinations are finally behind him as he begins to rebuild his life. Then one night Champion is called to examine the body of a woman who has washed ashore. Yet when he looks at her face, he sees that it's Samantha, the woman he dreamed about long ago...a woman who doesn't exist. Suddenly, Champion is haunted again, only this time it's by a team of expert killers who want to make sure he never finds the truth: the truth about the dead child who wanders through his imagination; the truth about the lover who inhabits his dreams; and the truth about a killer who has been on the run - in the wind - for a lifetime.
The ghosts of the dead are all around him, and Champion has to find out who murdered them, fast, or he could become one of them himself.

Reality or a dream? Flashback or Hallucination?
A Killer in the Wind is a cunning, wild ride through haunting hallucinations and the hearts of evil men. The puzzle pieces within this mystery are largely scattered amongst the recessed memories of one detective. I finished this one a lot faster than I intended to. Couldn't help it.
Andrew Klavan is one of the most involving novelists in the business today, and he is an exceptional narrator as well.
