Where does The Chessmen rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
    top 20%
Would you recommend The Chessmen to your friends? Why or why not?
yes - but only after reading the first two - the endfing needs to be told
    Which scene was your favorite?
    none in particular
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
no - not as much as the first two
    Any additional comments?
I felt slightly disappointed - it was a good enough ending but ,,, something didn't gel as much as tghe first two for me
    A Masterclass in Storytelling
This is the third of the Lewis trilogy by Peter May. I read the first two but, after starting a job which involved a long drive, decided to listen to this one. This was very much the right choice.
The story is wonderful, dark and brooding, realistic about life and love and evoking the bleak environment of the islands. Its tension never lets up and its very difficult to stop listening.
For me, however, this story was improved a hundredfold by Peter Forbess excellent narration. His accents are superb, his delivery is pitch perfect, adding a real dynamism to the tale. He is at no point over dramatic, which I find a lot on Audible, but managed to convey real emotion without sounding hammy.
Five stars arent quite enough for such excellent story telling.
Riveting conclusion to 1st rate trilogy
Whilst you could undoubtedly enjoy each part of this trilogy as a stand alone story - listen in the correct order and you will gradually absorb the complete tapestry of Fin's life as well as pick up sub-plots, stories and clues that weave their way throughout the 3 books. Rarely have I come across a trilogy that has been so cleverly constructed. Well written and well read The Blackhouse, The Lewis Man and now The Chessmen are thoroughly absorbing and I would have thought enjoyable for men and women alike.
    The best trilogy I read
Driving some 40k between jobs of work in the Scottish Highlands radio and mobile phone signals are very poor, which is no bad thing. Music is fine for short periods but having discovered audible I can think of no greater pleasure than getting lost in a good book and that I have done many times. Having listened to almost 200 books over the last few years this trilogy is only the second that has moved me enough to write a review. The narration is superb, accents and intonations paint such a beautiful picture of the setting and the people of Lewis. Peter May's ability to tell a story of intertwining lives, friendships and romance is so close to what seems ordinary but he makes it so much more. The addition of an extraordinary story which is so believable makes this something you can't stop listening to until you reach the end & even then the hunger for more is there.

    Like visiting an old friend
Rumpole is my most favorite non-conformist. He never takes himself or his colleagues too seriously. Rumpole's sense of humor is high-browed yet universal so anytime I get a chance to hear one of his cases, I take it.

    Members Reviews:
Interesting story, a few quibbles with the audio.
This book turned out to be a more interesting story than the average true crime story because it was the first crime solved using DNA typing. It was fascinating to listen to the way the crime was investigated because it revealed such a huge difference between the way the British view crime investigation and the way Americans do. It is literally not possible to imagine a town in the U.S. where every single male citizen would volunteer to provide a DNA sample, even before people really realized how accurate such testing was. The story of the underlying crime was not particularly unique or fascinating as the perpetrator was just your average psychopath, but the author did a good job of providing an accurate portrait of the two victims and their families. The tangent in the investigation due to the false confession was also quite interesting because the suspect was such a complete oddball. I hope they kept a close eye on that young man after this case was resolved!
The narrator was a bit irksome to listen to because he did the reading in the accent of the region, which was thick and fairly difficult to understand. I have actually heard interviews of the parents of the victims on a television program, so I know that this accent was correctly performed, but that didn't make it easier to understand.
    Meh
I guess it wasnt my kind of book. The story drags on with information that has nothing to do with the main story. If it does, they could have cut it out. Too long for what it was. Reminded me of the crime mystery shows on the ID channel.
    Sometimes tedious but overall good
I love this author but at times this true crime, my favorite genre, got to bogged down in the technical aspects and there were so many people to follow. Overall very complete picture of the crime, area and police work done to solve these 2 murders and a crash course on the beginnings of DNA.
    enjoyed the mystery
listening to while commuting to work kept me on edge , even the narrator used convenient accents to express a point.
    Gripping account of History!
This intense account of the tragic murder mystery and historic case will hold your interest all the way through! The narration by Wilson, the best I've ever heard!

Story too short, was looking for a whole book to get into. Not much meat at all for the price.
    Typically terrific Scudder
I didn't realize until I read the opening page that I had recently read this in an anthology but finished it anyway and enjoyed it as much as I did the first time
    What a rip off !

Someone in the group wanted playboy Tommi Peltonen dead, but thats one song these suspects refuse to sing. Behind the choirs jovial facade lies bitter passion, and the victims seemingly perfect life hid a host of sins that made him a target of almost everyone in the villa.
As a young female - and a redhead to boot - Maria knows that solving this case will help her overcome her perceived shortcoming in the eyes of her colleagues. But as the case takes startling twists and turns, and friends and foes become interchangeable, will she be able to piece together the clues before the killer strikes again?
    Members Reviews:
First Published 1993 So Expect Some Social Change
Maria Kallio is a young sergeant in the Serious Crime Unit in Helsinki, Finland. The book was first published in 1993 so if it seems socially a bit off that is probably the reason. Maria is trying to decide her career path. She is divided between the police work she originally considered her goal-- she naively wanted to help both victims and criminals-- and an interest in practicing law, the current goal of her education. When the book opens she is engaged in a six month temporary assignment with the police
Her immediate supervisor is hors de combat due to his alcoholism. Her coworker is about to go on vacation and has made it clear that nothing is going to stand between him and his vacation, least of all a newly reported body found floating beside a dock connected to a summer villa. At first it seems the death might be the cause of an accident. Then it becomes Maria's first murder.
This is a procedural not an action packed adventure. Maria interviews all of the potential suspects and witnesses as she looks deeper into the case. There's connections within connections as it seems that everyone is somehow involved in more than one way with everyone else.
The narrator is quite authoritative when it comes to the names-- Finnish is not a language that people in the US tend to be familiar with by ear so hearing the names is quite helpful. Also most of the main characters have short first names which helps with keeping them straight.
All of the Finns I have met tend to be avid readers and when speaking English rarely use colloquialisms. I think that the dialogue in the book which is described as "wooden" by at least one reviewer is an accurate translation. It's one of those cases I guess where the translator must choose a between accuracy and accessibility in another language. I don't think choosing accuracy was a mistake.
So if you are thinking about listening to this book you might want to try a sample first.
I'm very pleased that AmazonCrossing and Brilliance Audio are making these translated works available to a wider audience.
Series off to a weak start
My First Murder is Book 1 of the 6 book Maria Kallio audio series. I listened to and reviewed the other five books first. This is by far the weakest novel in this wonderful modern detective suspense thriller series. Some have complained about the narration of Amy Rubinate; I disagree!
Could this be a Scandinavian Cozy?
This book is a bit slow-placed (almost like a British Cozy set in Finland) and I didn't find the choir characters very engaging.

    Critic Reviews:
"This is the first of a new series that should be popular with cozy fans." (Booklist)
    Members Reviews:
First Book Augurs Well for the Series
As a first book in a series this one sets up a potentially very good cozy series. MacRae described a town and a number of characters it should be fun to spend time with. Also, she includes a few that we don't want to spend much time with--neither does the main character, Cath--but these add interest, humor, and another reason to come back for a second book with hopes that the twins will get their comeupance. But, like Charlie Brown and the football, I suspect it will be an unlikely but perpetual hope.
I liked the cozily paranormal aspect and wished more had been explored in this first novel. We were given some very tantalizing hints about Cath's grandmother, Ivy, and what she could do, but not enough to know for any certainty what it was. And it may run in the family... but, even with this to intrigue us, we mostly got a long scene introducing the ghost. I have to admit, I really liked the ghost, and I hope to see more of her, even if it's only in a semi-transparent form. One of my favorite tidbits in this story was that Cath thought to entertain the ghost with an audiobook--apparently a heroine with discerning tastes!
Emily Durante did a very good job with the various voices and characterizations, along with good prose reading.
I look forward to the next in the series and hope that the writer and narrator continue their stellar paring.
    Not even light reading
I thought this might be a fun book to listen to while knitting. After two chapters, though, I gave up and picked out something else. This gem appeared toward the end of the first chapter: "I sat for another moment, memorizing his face in my side mirror, promising myself that never would I or any of my children, should I have any, ever consider procreating with the likes of, or a close relative to, Cole Dunbar." Only stubbornness made me continue for another chapter. It didn't get better.
Good start to a good mystery
This is a good start to a good series. The characters are well written and likeable. The plot has enough twists and turns to keep you from guessing the ending. I gave the story three stars because the author spent too much time in some areas of the book going on and on.
The two cousins, Mercy and Shirley, were so annoying yet they added lots of humor to the story.

Not what I would have wasted $20 on..
When i bought this i was thinking that it would be following the book to a T. it didnt, it was so hard for me to follow along in my book because it would jump from paragraph to paragraph or it would go from a paragraph to 3 pages later. Very difficult to follow along with.

It starts with plans to bury deceased Great-uncle Frederick in the family vault on Beacon Hill. When the vault is opened, there's someone already there that no one could ever expect-the skeleton of a burlesque queen who disappeared thirty years ago! It's up to young Sarah Kelling to hold the shocked family together, and try to find out what happened. What she unravels is a complex murder plot that not only stretches into the past, but also has Sarah marked as a victim!
    Members Reviews:
A delightful start to the series
Sarah's family is opening up their historical cemetary vault, where no one else was ever supposed to be buried. To the surprise of all present, much has changed since its official closing. The main change is the addition of an exotic skeleton with rubies set into her teeth. This is the start of a kaleidoscopic adjustment of Sarah's view of her compressed little world. Charlotte MacLeod's brilliant plot is sympathetically humanized. When I listened to my old favorite THE FAMILY VAULT, it started a whole reading and listening sequence of Charlotte MacLeod books.
young wife, older husband, deadly family secrets
Sarah kelling has always adored her generation older Cousin Alexander Kelling, so when her father dies when she's 19 and leaves Alex as her guardian, she happily marries him. But they are living with his tragically blind and deaf mother, using Sarah's income from her trust that expires when she's 27, whose funds go to Alexander if she dies, and though the house is one of Boston's distinguished old homes, they are living in shabby genteel poverty, recycling old clothes and doing their own DIY - or are they merely being thrifty aristocratic Boston Brahmins?.
But when a cantankerous older family member insists on being buried in the original historic family vault (instead of the modern cemetery on the outskirts of Boston next to his pre-deceased and despised wife), they find an unexpected resident - a notorious stripper Ruby Red -- and the Kelling secrets are about to come out.
Sarah is a bright, well-mannered young woman, happy to serve, but growing tired of the social demands of her heritage, the autocratic demands of her mother-in-law, and the financial demands of poverty when she's supposed to be part of a rich family. And when this shock starts to crack the family solidarity, she begins to search for the truth of how Ruby intersects with the family, but also the pattern of premature death. And trying to make her marriage a more equal one.
Well - written, with multiple humorous eccentric characters in the in-bred Kelling clan, and a complicated plot with a totally unexpected solution.
    Give me Peter Shandy!!
I enjoyed the Peter Shandy series by this author, so I thought I'd try this series. I listened to one hour. I found the story line to be trite. The characters uninteresting - even to the point of being "corny". I am not sure which turned me off more...the story or the narrator. I agree with the reviewer that commented about being unsure at some points as to what character was speaking. Personally, I felt that at some points she was reading too fast, and at other points she droned on & on. I lost interest and found myself zoning out on the book totally.

Badly Flawed Production Ruined it For Me
What did you like best about The Other Woman? What did you like least?
The author is pretty famous here in Boston but I didn't know she had a book series (I don't watch the channel she is on). The plot seemed interesting but it was inspired by a number of local references, so us locals may have a slight positive bias.
The writing wasn't bad. She's no Lehane but the characters and the dialog were ok however with the bad production its a little hard to tell.
Would you recommend The Other Woman to your friends? Why or why not?
No. As I said in the subject: bad production. Might recommend the print version although not strongly.
What didnt you like about Ilyana Kadushins performance?
Really really bad. The novel has a lot so short chapters cutting quickly between characters and scenes and this reader does no voices and almost no tonal changes so it is very hard to follow. Around the middle of the book she at least gets some emotion in her voice during action but that's about as far as it goes. To compound matters there are often no pauses between chapters so one chapter ends. The next chapter begins with the different character talking with no tonal shifts, no pauses..you're like wait a minute. This is a completely different character/scene.
On top of that this particular book resets to the beginning every time you pause. You have to keep track of where you are yourself and skip all the way from the front every time you play it. I've had problems with other books but never this bad. Even pauses (not stops) reset to the beginning.
Was The Other Woman worth the listening time?
It was ok. Nothing special. Very very annoying from a usability point of view.
Reader hampered enjoyment of this title
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The book itself was interesting, however, the quick switching between characters didn't lend itself to an audio book, as it took a while to figure out we had changed scenes. That could have been corrected by a reader who would indicate, through voice tone or pauses, that a change had occurred.
Would you recommend The Other Woman to your friends? Why or why not?
    No.

Matt knows the Longboat Key police will do their job in investigating. But for Matt, finding Wyatt's killer isn't a job; it's personal.
Determined to do whatever it takes to solve Wyatt's murder, Matt takes matters into his own hands and embarks on a clandestine investigation. Soon, Matt finds himself in hot pursuit of a cadre of remorseless criminals and trained killers, but the tables turn and Matt becomes the pursued. Faced with mounting danger, Matt calls for backup from his buddies Jock Algren and Logan Hamilton.Matt Royal would go to the ends of the earth to exact revenge for Wyatt's murder, but will he go outside the law?
Expect the unexpected in this wild and dangerous ride from Longboat Key, Florida, to Frankfurt, Germany, because hell hath no fury like Matt Royal scorned.
    Members Reviews:
More an espionage thriller than modern detective.
This is the 7th book that I have listened to and written brief positive reviews for in the Matt Royal series. It is an excellent action thriller. The books in the series are as follows:
    1. Longboat Blues (not available in audio format)
    2. Murder Key (not available in audio format)
    3. Blood Island
    4. Wyatt's Revenge
    5. Bitter Legacy
    6. Collateral Damage
    7. Fatal Decree
    8. Found
    9. Chasing Justice
    10. Mortal Dilemma
Books 8. 9, and 10 are not listed as being part of the Matt Royal series by Audible, but they are. I have now written brief reviews for Books 4 through 10.
The Matt Royal series is consistently excellent. It is set in Longboat Key FL. The genre is modern detective thrillers, but there are aspects of espionage thrillers to all and two of the novels are indeed espionage thrillers. The books are well written, character development is great, plots are nicely developed, and narration is consistently outstanding.
If these books were non-fiction the murder rate in Longboat Key FL, a real place, would be much higher than Detroit!
I recommend this book and the entire Matt Royal series.
