  • #42 The Naked Detective!

Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 42 of our spin-off show about the weird world of softcore skin-flicks!

Way back in episode 11, we did Ernest G. Sauer’s New York Nights, which we loved, because it was fun and sweet. So this time, 31 episodes later, we’re doing another of his films: The Naked Detective! Coincidentally, also way back in episode 11 we got absolutely tanked before recording. This again sort of repeated this episode, except it happened more as the episode went on, so that’s something. Anyway, the movie’s a satirical, sex-filled, detective romp, with a surprisingly well thought out mystery: the whole cast (which this time includes Matt from Compañeros and also Ash from For the Story) guessed the culprit prior to the big reveal, but still! As a bonus, Get Soft’s Official Favourite Actress of All Time Julia Parton is in it. She is just the best, isn’t she?

Plus, we look at the life and times of one of the film’s other stars, the great Taylor St. Claire. She started in magazines and softcore films, then moved into hardcore, and now she films and sells short videos like Your Giant Inflated Escort and other super niche fetish targeting stuff. It’s probably crazy lucrative! Where else are you going to find content like This Was Not The Plan Ass Expansion, or Hourglass Juicy Filled Hourglass Giant Ass And A Leprechaun, or POV: If Your Cock Grows Big and Hard I Will Grow One For You? Nowhere, that's for dang sure!

  • #41 LA Goddess!

Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 41 of our spin-off show about the weird world of softcore skin-flicks!

This episode, we go deep into the world of filmmaking! We check out Jag Mundhra’s 1993 dramedy L.A. Goddess - about a body double and her deeply romantic romance with a movie producer. Weirdly, Joe Estevez, Jeff Conaway and James Hong are all in it. But that’s not even the most exciting part: we were joined for this by Actual Filmmaker Paul C. Miller, writer and director of Maximum Thrust, which we covered back in episode 35. Find out the answers to burning questions such as, ‘Do actors really ask what their motivation is all the time?’, and ‘Was trombone Paul’s first choice of instrument growing up?’, and 'Has Paul ever been to Balboa Island, where Bruce Penhall grew up?'.

Plus, we chat about the life and times of Kathy Shower, star of L.A. Goddess, and Playboy's Playmate of the Month for May 1985 and the Playmate of the Year for 1986. She had a surprisingly packed acting career on top of that too, with roles on CHiPs (always with the CHiPs connections on this show lately for some reason), Santa Barbara and even American Kickboxer 2.

  • #40 Return to Savage Beach!

Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 40 of our spin-off show about the weird world of softcore skin-flicks!

It’s the end of an era, as we take a look at the last of the Sidaris filmography, with Andy’s 1998 swansong L.E.T.H.A.L. Ladies: Return to Savage Beach. It’s a gigantic, complicated, labyrinthine piece of work: literally minutes of exposition at a time, and an ending that would make the writers of Scooby Doo wonder if they'd gone too far. Plus, all the usual gadgets, remote controlled vehicle explosions and fit-’em-in-where-you-can sex scenes you’ve come to expect from the great man. Is the film a perfect ending to a wonderful career? Well, that’s up for debate, but we do all get a little misty eyed saying goodbye to a great filmmaker.

And this time we turn the spotlight on the legendary Shae Marks: Tiger herself! She only did two of Andy’s films, but she made an unforgettable impact, that’s for sure. She was best buds with co-stars Carrie Westcott and Julie Strain, and almost starred in a film written and directed by Julie’s then-husband (and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles co-creator) Kevin Eastman called Phasmophobia! Unfortunately it never got off the ground. Goddamn! What a wild ride that would have been!

  • #39 Wild Orchid!

Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 39 of our spin-off show about the weird world of softcore skin-flicks!

We’re back to our very irregular look at the work of Zalman King. We started way back in episode 18 when we did his directorial debut, Two Moon Junction, so now it’s time for his infamous 1989 follow-up, Wild Orchid, aka the one in which Mickey Rourke and Carre Otis had real actual sex probably. Spoilers: everyone involved says they didn’t, and frankly if they did then they had some real boring and unenthusiastic sex. This is one weird, weird movie, and no one on the show quite knows how they feel about it until they have to actually give it a rating, although everyone agrees that actual Golden Globe winner Jacqueline Bisset and her crazy actual acting and, especially, her fabulous men's suit and drawn-on moustache (very proto-Dorian Electra!) is the unequivocal highlight.

Also we didn’t really want to discuss the life and times of Mickey Rourke because that guy is a complete bummer. So, we talked about someone from the film with a much cooler and wilder life: Oleg Vidov! In the ‘70s, he was known as the “Robert Redford of Soviet cinema”. But then some craziness happened because his wife was having an affair with a dashing bearded foreigner you might be familiar with, he got a divorce, and the KGB and Leonid Brezhnev ended up significantly pissy at him, so he defected to the US, staying at Richard Harrison’s house in Rome for a few months on the way!

  • #38 Emmanuelle in Rio!

Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 38 of our spin-off show about the weird world of softcore skin-flicks!

After almost a year away from the series, we return to the Emmanuelle franchise with 2003’s Emmanuelle in Rio. Except, it was never actually meant to be an Emmanuelle film - it was just meant to be a cheaply made improvised Alain Siritzky production made in Rio, but then no one wanted anything to do with it, so he redubbed it and shoved the Emmanuelle name on it. It is definitely cheaply made and improvised at least. It’s kind of like watching a drama class doing their first improv session, but with interminable amounts of stock footage and dull sex scenes thrown in to pad the whole thing out. On the other hand, there is some very weird and compelling dialogue. Does it balance it out? Well, no. But it probably makes for some good clips on this episode?

Plus, we look at the man behind the camera for this hot mess: Kevin Alber, who had quite a career as a casting director and actor, and then a moderately successful career as a director, before Emmanuelle in Rio happened to him. He’s never directed or acted since. Probably the whole experience broke him. Completely understandable.

  • #37 Day of the Warrior!

Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 37 of our spin-off show about the weird world of softcore skin-flicks!

We continue our deep dive into the final seven Sidaris films, with the penultimate film in the series, Day of the Warrior! Andy is back in the driver’s seat for this one - writing and directing - and it’s good to have him back, frankly. He’s working with a whole new generation of stars though: the great Julie Strain is back, but for the first time he’s utilising the talents of Julie K. Smith, and the bizarrely proportioned Shae Marks. And there’s an American Gladiator, and also a WCW wrestler who gets to play the titular Warrior. But he’s not the Warrior the wrestler - the Ultimate Warrior, that is - he’s Marcus ‘Buff’ Bagwell.

To try and explain this honestly confusing situation we look at the life and times of Marcus Alexander Bagwell, and discover three primary facts: he’s buff, he’s the stuff, and the ladies can’t get enough. Also, he had a theme song called ‘Buff Daddy’, and he wrestled in a tag team with a guy who called himself Big Poppa Pump. Even stranger than that, he was, in 2014, on the 5th season of the Showtime ‘reality’ series Gigolos.

  • #36 The Last Road!

Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 36 of our spin-off show about the weird world of softcore skin-flicks!

It’s part two of our softcore racing double feature this time, Made for TV Mayhem's Amanda joins us to check out 1998’s softcore dustbowl dirt and drag race epic, The Last Road (aka Speedway). It’s sort of about Maggie, a rural mechanic desperate to protect her dead fiance’s winning streak record from shithead race-bro Billy Chase, when former Air Force Captain Harry G. Lonnigan arrives in town and offers to race against Billy. But also it’s about a poor woman stuck in a spiral of grief and toxic masculinity. And it’s also about a weird guy named Billy with zero interpersonal skills who’s been picked on all his life and has only ever been good at one thing - racing - and likes to refer to himself in the third person as much as possible. This film has one of the weirdest sex scenes you’ll ever see. It also has a shock ending right out of ‘70s cinema. We do talk about the ending and viciously spoil it, because we had to. It is too alarming not to.

Plus, we talk about the life and times of the film’s director, TV’s very own Clark Brandon! Maybe you know him from The Facts of Life, on which he played Jo’s boyfriend. Or maybe you know him from late ‘80s sex drug burger comedy Fast Food (which he also co-wrote). Maybe you even know him from Out of the Blue, or Mr Merlin, the remarkably unsuccessful early ‘80s sitcoms he appeared in?

  • #35 Maximum Thrust!

Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 35 of our spin-off show about the weird world of softcore skin-flicks!

This time, we rev up our engines and engage nitro for a fast and furious car racing adventure called Maximum Thrust from 2003! For some reason, it’s the kind of title that seems like it should always be written in all caps. MAXIMUM THRUST! MAXIMUM THRUUUUUUST!! It stars softcore legend Beverly Lynne, and also a ginormous man called Onyx. It’s about an all-girl racing team trying to get back on their feet after one of their racers died in a mysterious accident the previous year. Was it caused by manipulative race boss Junior, or was it Ava’s revolutionary engine cooling chill kit, which injects freon directly into the engine?

That’s freon the gas, by the way, not friand the tiny almond flour cake. You gotta keep those things out of your engine at all costs.

Also, we talk about the life and times of writer-director Paul C. Miller! You can check out his book Cock and Bull – A Young Man’s Misadventures In Lust and Love for all the gossip on his disastrous love life in his teens, but for detail more relevant to his movie career, we sent a few emails straight to the source for the inside word on this and a bunch of other movies he on which worked! Like, for example, all of the car and racer wrangling was done by a lanky, greasy, toothless chap named Damon.

  • #34 The Dallas Connection!

Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 34 of our spin-off show about the weird world of softcore skin-flicks!

We return once again to the films of the Sidaris family, this time with the final Drew Sidaris effort, The Dallas Connection! Debate rages over whether this is his best work, or whether Enemy Gold is the better movie, but it’s definitely sad to see him step back from directing either way - unfortunately, he’s never done another film since. After the relatively subdued mood of Enemy Gold, Drew is in full Sidaris mode this time around: double crosses, explosions, deadly remote control cars and boats, and a plot that’s really only totally comprehensible on multiple viewings! Plus, the debut of Julie K Smith in the Sidaris-verse™.

We wave goodbye to a couple of long term cast members in this one, though. Most notably, Bruce Penhall, who did five films as Bruce Christian, and then two as Chris Cannon. So, we turn the spotlight on him this episode and take a look at his life and career. Did you know he’s the only American to win back to back World Championship titles in two completely different sports?! What a guy!

  • #33 Over the Wire!
Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 33 of our spin-off show about the weird world of softcore skin-flicks!
Last episode we finally got to Jim Wynorski, and this episode it's Fred Olen Ray time, as we check out his 1996 erotic thriller Over the Wire! An murder plot unexpectedly overheard on a telephone call leads to a web of secrets, mysterious and twists. Hey, it's sort of like 1948's Sorry, Wrong Number, isn't it? Well, yes and no. There's less bed-ridden Barbara Stanwyck in this (like, 100% less), and more Landon Hall and Shauna O'Brien (in various beds for different reasons), and more crazy acting from legendary weirdo John Lazar as an assassin. Also, you get to see more of Tim Abell than you'd ever imagined you might as he climbs over Shauna O'Brien with his back to the camera while completely naked. It's all on show, believe me. You can see everything that man owns, as they say.
Plus, we check out the career of Brinke Stevens! The question of why Brinke does come up - quite reasonably - because she has literally two lines in the film. The reason is because she's fascinating and awesome. She was kicked out of her doctoral studies in marine biology because she was performing "forbidden research" on dolphin communication. That's a direct quote, by the way.
