One thing that always garners a lot of consternation, a lot of debate and a lot of really strong opinions is- the interview portfolio. Go into any social media group and ask about school counseling portfolios and interviews, and the conversation goes wild! Everybody has an opinion on whether or not you need a portfolio,
if you don't,
they've "never been asked for one,"
"I have been asked for one,"
"I put this in it...",
"I put that in it..."
and the conversation explodes into this huge amalgamation of confusion.
In this episode, I'll reveal what I recommend for your portfolio approach, and no surprise- it's going to be at odds with a lot of the popular "advice" that you hear elsewhere. But unlike others who pontificate and run, I have a rationale and proof that this approach works.

We get lots of questions from our "Get the Job!" prep program each year, and one of the most popular is, "What do I wear?"
In this episode of the podcast, we'll jump into color choice: how are the colors of your interview attire perceived, and what does the research really say? We'll walk through the research about your color choices, how they may be interpreted, and how you can use the research to your advantage.

Do you remember when you were a student when you would cram for an exam or a quiz, memorize everything you could to try to ace the exam, and then got to the test and discovered that not a dang thing that you'd studied was on that test?
Or maybe there were a few curveball questions about things you SWORE were never talked about in class, were never on the study guide, and you had the WORST sinking feeling like, "Ah! I can't believe I don't know this!!!" Do you remember those days?
We're going to be talking about that in this episode of the Get the Job Podcast. We're talking about the famous ASCA interview question list: why you should beware that list and why question prepping doesn't work.
This episode is going to blow your mind because there are so many so-called interview prep programs completely focused on this question list- but I'm telling you right now, if you're preparing for interviews that way, you're doing it flat wrong.

As a result, it is common for folks to overemphasize and overcomplicate the creation of their résumé because it gives the FEELING of control in the job search process.
School counselor friend, if you're under the impression that your résumé is paramount to your chances of getting your school counseling job, or if you feel that endlessly revising and tweaking your résumé is the only way that you can have control over your job interview process, you've got to change your perspective- NOW!
