In this second installment of our three part interview series with four time Syracuse All American, Ric Beardsley, we hear of three fundamental keys that he teaches all defenders at his private clinics. Co-host Jay McMahon also weighs in on what he considers the three keys for all offensive players in the game of lacrosse when prompted by co-host Ron “The Big Dawg” Dalgleish.

Ric also shares a set back he experienced during his freshman year that he used as an opportunity to reset himself and completely revamp his game. 

Finally, Ric opens up about what his college coaches, Hall of Famers Roy Simmons, Jr. and John Desko, were like behind the scenes. And he shares how these two very successful yet very different coaches complemented each other throughout their careers. 

It’s another enjoyable episode and one in which you might want to take out a pen and piece of paper so you can take some notes about the best practices for skills training.

In our final interview of our inaugural season we had the pleasure of sitting down with the legendary Syracuse defenseman Ric Beardsley!

Ric was a two time high school All American, won gold for the U19 USA Team, and was a four time collegiate All American. Following graduation he founded a lacrosse skills training business that he continues to run to this day. Over the years he has helped many boys and girls achieve their dreams of playing college lacrosse.

In this first installment of our series, Ric tells us of his late mother Angela, who encouraged Ric to play a number of different contact sports, “My mom didn’t want no softie,” Ric explains. Unfortunately, she would pass away from cancer while Ric was in the ninth grade. He dedicated his playing career in her memory. 

Beardsley also recounts the strong influence his middle and high school coaches had upon him as well as describing the intense rivalry his alma mater, Lakeland, had with their in town rivals Yorktown of West Chester County, New York. And Coach Kirwan, who’s won a DIII title with Tufts as a player and another as a Coach and who’s Coached two teams who lost in the DI semi-finals both in OT as well as coaching two Virginia teams to the NCAA D1 title, should know!

Next, both coaches discuss their exciting process, this past summer, as they chose to reunite in Hanover, N.H. to coach the Big Green of Dartmouth! For Sean Kirwan it was a matter of realizing that this Ivy League school “Checked all the boxes,” he was looking for, in a head coaching position. And for assistant coach Mikey Herring “All the stars aligned,” as he took advantage of the opportunity to work with Coach Kirwin, his college coach, and work at his father’s Alma Mater and coach the team his father played for a generation ago. 

And finally, our roving reporter Steve Gresalfi completes our segment with some intriguing, awkward, and hilarious questions about both our guest’s experiences with Coach Lars Tiffany of UVA.

In this first installment our two part interview with Dartmouth head coach Sean Kirwan and his offensive coordinator Mikey Herring we start with their beginnings in the great game of lacrosse. Next, we hear of how their high school lacrosse experiences shaped and guided their goals of playing college lacrosse.. 

Coach Kirwan gives terrific insight into how his time playing and coaching for Tufts, under Mike Daly, would change the college lacrosse landscape forever. After two years coaching for the Jumbos and a Division III national title under his belt he was chosen by Lars Tiffany to run the Brown offense. One offensive output record after the next was set, year after year, as Kirwin mastered his craft and would eventually move onto UVA with Coach Tiffany. 

While with the Wahoos Mikey Herring and Coach Kerwan’s path’s cross. The two hit it off right away as Mikey’s father was a high school lacrosse coach (who ironically played lacrosse at Dartmouth) and imbued in his son a tremendous lacrosse I.Q. as well as a love and respect for the game. Under Coach Kerwan’s tutelage Mikey became one of the quarterback’s of Virginia’s incredible 2019 National Championship run. 

Mikey Herring was an assistant coach at VMI and UMBC making his own impressive mark as both of those offenses excelled under his guidance.

We have two very exciting guests on the show: Commissioner of the NLL, Brett Frood & recent inductee into the Professional Lacrosse Hall of Fame, Greg Cattrano. 

Brett hails from Elbridge, NY where he was a multisport athlete. After High School he enrolled and played his college lacrosse at Brown. During his time on College Hill, he helped the Bears win two Ivy League Championships and earn three trips to the NCAA Tournament. In 1994, his freshman season, Brown reached the Final Four for the first time in program history.

In 2004 he joined NASCAR Hall of Famer Tony Stewart following his graduation from Harvard Business School. In 2012, after negotiating the merger with Hass, he was named and highlighted as one of the Sports Business Journals 40 under 40. At Stewart-Haas Racing, he led all business initiatives for a team that won two NASCAR Cup Series championships and an Xfinity Series title. He negotiated over $600 million in partnerships while with Stewart-Haas Racing. 

In September of 2022, he became the fifth commissioner of the National Lacrosse League, which has enjoyed 25 years of success after re-launching in 1997. The NLL ranks third in average attendance for professional indoor sports worldwide, behind only the NHL and NBA. The NLL has averaged between 8,900 and 10,700 spectators per game each year since 2004. 

Greg Cattrano attended and played lacrosse for Ward Melville High School where he was an All-American in his senior season. His 1992 team won the New York State Lacrosse Championship. In 1993 he was awarded the Lt. Ray Enners Award as Suffolk County's outstanding lacrosse player.[1]

He also attended Brown University. In his junior year he earned 2nd team All America honors, in his senior year, he was named NCAA Goalie of the Year, All-Ivy, All-New England, and Brown Bears Team MVP. Naturally, he was named 1st Team All-American. He finished his collegiate career with an amazing 68% save percentage, and his three goals still stand as the NCAA record for offensive p

Outside of USA Lacrosse CEO, Marc Riccio, over our twenty eight episodes, we have interviewed coaches almost exclusively. But this time around we’re switching gears and interviewing two exceptional players from the collegiate and professional ranks: Dylan Molloy and Larken Kemp!

Molly, who plays in the PLL for the Atlas Lacrosse Club, was the 2016 Tewaaraton winner, leading Division 1 lacrosse in points and assists and was second in goals (with sixty- two) to his Brown teammate Kylor Bellistri who beat him by one goal with sixty three. 

Kemp, who played for the Redwoods LC of the PLL,  holds the record for most caused turnovers in a D1 men’s lacrosse game with eight, tied with three other players. He also holds the record for most points, goals, assists, and caused turnovers by a long pole in Brown Men’s Lacrosse history. 

Both players were three time All Americans at Brown and leaders of the 2016 Brown Men’s Lacrosse that went to the Final Four. The team played in an exciting and memorable semi-final matchup versus the University of Maryland. The Bears came back, tying the score in thrilling fashion to force overtime before falling to the Terrapins in sudden death 14-13.

In this third installment of our three-part interview series we hear of Molloy & Kemp’s  professional lacrosse experience, their triumphs and some tribulations, their exciting MLL careers, and how their playing days in the PLL differ and what their relationships with other pros were like. They also share some salient information on what young players today need to be focusing on. And at the end of our interview our roving reporter, Steve Gresalfi, brings up salient lacrosse topics of the day and poses the question to our guests “Do you give this a Pass or Fail”.
