We are excited to release our second and final portion of our interview with the Executive Director of Harlem Lacrosse-Boston, Pat Cronin and Coach Sam Jackson! In this episode we review the history and success of the program (see description below) as well as discuss the partnership Sam Jackson, a Brown '92, lacrosse alum, has formed with the organization at the suggestion of Coach Dom Starsia with the financial support of J.P. Williamson, Brown, '90, Sean Stalfort, Brown '91 as well as many others.
In 2011, Harlem Lacrosse was formed to create a holistic youth services organization around the idea that what students need to reach their full personal potential is to be immersed in an activity that they take pride in, led by a caring mentor, tutor and coach who can help them build confidence and skill sets on the field and in the classroom.
Over the years Harlem Lacrosse has expanded significantly through grass roots efforts as well as by merging with other like minded organizations and now serves over 1500 student athletes nationwide across 41 programs in five cities.
Their mission is to provide opportunities, and experiences that activate the skills and traits to put youth on a path to success as students, athletes, and citizens.
Their vision is to empower the students who are most at risk for academic decline and dropout, to rise above their challenges and reach their full potential.
They serve young student athletes starting in elementary school and actively recruit special education students and students identified by school administrators as most vulnerable to academic decline and school dropout. As a result Harlem Lacrosse serves high poverty and special education male and female students at rates that surpass those of their school sites.
Since 2011, Harlem Lacrosse students have maintained a 100% on-time middle school graduation rate, have passed their classes at a rate 20% higher than that of their peers at their school sites, and have earned over $75 million in scholarship offers to independent schools and colleges.
Harlem Lacrosse alumni have earned admission with scholarships to institutions including Bates, Colby, Connecticut, Gettysburg, Haverford, and Hobart Colleges, as well as Tufts University, the University of Virginia, and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
And their success continues to grow. For example, in the high school graduation class of 2022 alone there were 55 participants, 52 are going to college earning over 4.5 million dollars in scholarships, 30 are the first in their family to attend college, 25 are playing college lacrosse.
