Best left in the Amazon warehouse.
This is without doubt one of the most depressing books I have ever read. The characters are poorly drawn with obvious hate figures appearing more or less immediately enabling the reader to virtually predict the outcome of the story from the first few pages. The character of the ships captain, conversely, was overdrawn making you wish the miserable sod would be lost at sea before they hit Halifax. Were there ever such captains wracked with uncertainty and self doubt during the war. I doubt any such officer would have been given command of such important and crucial ships. I stayed with it until the end only to see if there were any twists later on. There wasn't. Leave it with Amazon.

    Publisher's Summary:
The plague raging through London in 1665 has emptied the city. The only people left are those too poor to flee or those who selflessly struggle to control the contagion and safeguard the capital's future. Amongst them, though, are those prepared to risk their health for money - those who sell dubious 'cures' and hawk food at wildly inflated prices. Also amongst them are those who hold in their hands the future of the city's most iconic building - St Paul's Cathedral.
The handsome edifice is crumbling from decades of neglect and indecision, giving the current custodians a stark choice: repair or demolish. Both sides have fanatical adherents who have been fighting each other since the Civil Wars. Large sums of money have disappeared, major players have mysteriously vanished, and then an unidentified skeleton is discovered in another man's grave.
A reluctant Chaloner returns to London to investigate, only to discover that someone is determined to thwart him by any means - by bullet, poison or bludgeon - and he fears he has very little time to identify the culprits before he becomes yet another victim in the battle for the cathedral's future.

Yet another great book from Suzanne Gregory
Having read the first two paperbacks in this series and loved them both. I thought I would try an audio version of another to see if it was as good as actually reading it for my self. I was delighted with the range of voices the reader creates for each character and found it did not spoil my own imagined characters but put sound to them and made them more real than I had expected. Love the book, love narrative and looking forward to the next one. In fact I may get the whole series including the tow paperbacks I have already read. Wish I had tried this first.

i enjoyed this book very much, the storyline was good and i was drawn into the plot and got a good feeling for london in the midst of a terrble plague and the intrigues of the time.
    Another great listen
This a Challoner story ...so why isn't it linked to the rest? However it does convey how claustrophobic London must have been when closed off by the plague. An intreguing tale well narrated ...dont change the narrator his is voice now firmly linked in my head with Thomas Challoner
    The executioner of st Paul's
Very enjoyable story line and interesting and historical opening the story and corruption of the time
Just as much fun as usual
Always enjoy Susanna Gregory's tohnge in cheek styke. Plenty of twists and turns with main characters getting embroiled in unlikely events but always coming out on top.

April 1865. Having been an eyewitness to the assassination of President Lincoln, Matthew Grand, a former captain of the 3rd Cavalry of the Potomac, has come to London on an undercover assignment to hunt down the assassin's coconspirators.
Ambitious young journalist Jim Batchelor has been charged with writing a feature article on the visiting American.
Both men are distracted from their missions by the discovery of a body in London's Soho district. It's the latest in a series of grisly garrotings by a killer known as the Haymarket Strangler. As Grand and Batchelor team up to pursue their investigations, it becomes clear that there may be a disturbing connection between the assassination of Abraham Lincoln and the Haymarket Strangler.

    Two of a Kind
I donât know if it has anything to do with this being the one-hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the end of the American Civil War, but I have been running into more than a few books about the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Not surprisingly, given its title, The Blue and the Grey, by M.J. Trow is another.
Itâs April 1865, and former Union Cavalry Captain Matthew Grand is in Fordâs Theatre when Abraham Lincoln is assassinated. In fact, he almost captures John Wilkes Booth, but is ambushed by an Englishman, and Booth escapes. After being rather brusquely questioned National Detective Police Grand is deemed innocent. Since he was a witness, and saw the English conspirator he is sent to London by its commander, Colonel Baker, to see if he can find one man in the teeming metropolis of London.
Meanwhile, in London, journalist James Batchelor, after a night of heavy drinking, finds himself accused of the murder of a prostitute after he stumbles upon her corpse in an alley. Batchelor is released after being questioned by Inspector Tanner of the London Metropolitan Police, with the expectation that he will write about the murder, and keep Inspector Tanner informed. Since he usually covers garden shows and the like Batchelor considers it a chance to make a name for himself. When more ladies of the evening are found dead he finds himself investigating a killer known as the Haymarket Strangler.
After a slew of coincidences and a brigade of characters move the story along Batchelor finds himself covering Grand for the Papers, and the two men find common cause, and that the two mysteries they are investigating may be linked. From there the two men work together to unsnare two cases, and bring to justice a murderer and an accessory to the murder of the President.
Mr. Trow clearly knows and enjoys the time and setting, and both come to life. The characters of Grand and Batchelor are refreshing realistic, and enjoyably down-to-earth. There are a plethora of supporting characters, and they are all multi-dimensional as well. If anything, the amount of characters and the space they occupy in this novel may have been a bit of a hindrance at times. I found myself enjoying each tangential character and their individual stories, but at the expense of narrative drive and tension. I felt at times that Mr. Trow was taking two good stories, almost two good books, and forcing them into one fairly enjoyable but rather unwieldy whole. The amount of coincidences and plot devices that had to happen to bring the two main characters and their stories together stretched credulity at times, but it never broke. Mr.

So much potential, but by book 9 I'm getting tired of waiting for it to be fulfilled.
This series both delights and infuriates me. Firstly, the pacing is hideous. After chapters of development the author tries to wrap things up in haste. It has not been satisfactory for the last several entries.. This time to boot the story ends in a heck of a cliffhanger, which isn't the done thing in this genre. Finally, please let this author's publishers hire a decent copy editor for the next book. There are egregious errors (comfortable where context makes clear the word should read uncomfortable) and some truly twisted syntax.
    Lord A Mighty
Rating not changed due to proofreading or lack thereof.
Characters still living life through a spider's web knots and tangelos. Stumbling through clues to solve as amateurs the mysteries of the castle both old and new. Just when you think they've got it...To be continued. Enough to infuriated the loyal reader that ordinarily would have to wait for a subsequent publication to put an end to this, however I am playing catch-up and will continue on and wrap up this series. If it indeed has an end.
    Hate the ending!!
Seriously! Ugh, loved the books but enough with dragging out all the "secrets" and the horrible cliffhanger at the end is just annoying. Mysteries do not do to be continued's!
LOVE EUPHREMIA MARTIN - A WOMAN AHEAD OF HER TIME
l thoroughly enjoy these books, they move along, and are hard to put down, Ephremia is bright, daring, spirited and analytical. She has a charitable nature among all her investigations and if you like Tommy and Tuppence from Agatha Christie, this book is for you
    Only part one
I like this series of books but I'm sorry that I wasn't warned that this contains only part of the story which will be finished in another book.

    Publisher's Summary:
On the eve of the Queen's coronation, DI Stephens and Max Mephisto uncover an anarchist plot and a ticking bomb at the same time as solving the murder of a man close to them - from the author of the best-selling Dr Ruth Galloway mysteries.
Elizabeth II's coronation is looming, but the murder of their wartime commander, Colonel Cartwright, spoils the happy mood for DI Edgar Stephens and magician Max Mephisto. A playbill featuring another deceased comrade is found in Colonel Cartwright's possession, and a playing card, the ace of hearts: the blood card. The wartime connection and the suggestion of magic are enough for him to put Stephens and Mephisto on the case.
Edgar's on-going investigation into the death of Brighton fortune-teller Madame Zabini is put on hold. Max is busy rehearsing for a spectacular Coronation Day variety show - and his television debut - so it's Edgar who is sent to New York, a land of plenty, worlds away from still-rationed England. He's on the trail of a small-town mesmerist who may provide the key, but someone else silences him first.
It's Edgar's colleague, DS Emma Holmes who finds the clue, buried in the files of the Zabini case, that leads them to an anarchist group intent on providing an explosive finale to Coronation Day.
Now it's up to Edgar, Max and Emma to foil the plot and find out who it is who's been dealing the cards....

    Mephisto gets his 3rd outing
What did you like about this audiobook?
As this is the 3rd book it was finding out about what happened to the characters.
How has the book increased your interest in the subject matter?
The genre is one that I regularly read and I was encouraged to read it after Elly Griffiths was given the role of Chair at the Harrogate Crime Festival 2017. I would have read this anyway at some point.
Does the author present information in a way that is interesting and insightful, and if so, how does he achieve this?
    1. Question is not gender neutral and incorrectly describes it as a male.
    2. The book is a work of fiction so the role of the author is to provide a world to escape to and not present knowledge in the way presumed.
What did you find wrong about the narrator's performance?
Nothing overly wrong with it, just that it was a different narrator to the previous 2 books which spoilt it a bit.
Do you have any additional comments?
When setting these questions it would have been nice for the original questions to be saved or an option to save the review.
    Another good book by Elly
Storyline was good, well written and well narrated. Only down side was that the recording had 3 parts where the narrative jumped as if a CD had skipped.
    Brilliant but recording flawed
I can't recommend the story highly enough for its twists and turns as well as its denouement but unfortunately silence reigns in several places leaving you wondering what you are missing.
Another highly entertaining Stephens and Mephistopheles story.
I loved the characters, the setting: the 1950s, Brighton and central London. Great plot tying into the past, both of the magic men, but also references to WW2 history.
The narrator was ok with everything except the female character voices which all sounded a bit silly. And there are a lot of women in this book. It didn't quite spoil it for me.

    This story has it all!
I really enjoyed this book. It had mystery, romance, and was filled with humor (thanks in part to the fainting goats). I liked that the book is filled with strong female characters. Its funny that the main character refers to her hair as "auburn with a few streaks of red" because as a child, whenever someone commented about my red hair, I would tell them, "My hair is not red, its auburn." My husband would probably attest to the fact that life with a redhead is very similar to how it is portrayed in the book. All the characters were entertaining and I loved Millie's reaction to them.
I listened to the Audible audio version of this book narrated by Nancy Wu. She did an EXCELLENT job with the narration. All the voices were really unique and really demonstrated her range well. I had never listened to anything she has narrated before, but I will definitely be checking out more of her work.
If you like mystery and romance, but like to laugh, too, I highly recommend this book. This is the first book I have read by J.V.L. Bell, and I enjoyed it so much that I want to see more from this author.
    Loved it.
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, I would recommend this to anyone who like historical mysteries set in America.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I like Millie and Dom equally. I enjoyed their banter and all their little arguments. I found it quite funny in places.
The side characters were also well written and provided much amusement. The darker characters were menacing enough that the suspense and intrigue had me on the edge of my seat. I really enjoyed this book and would certainly look out for more by the author.
Have you listened to any of Nancy Wus other performances before? How does this one compare?
The narration was very good and I found it easy to listen to.
    Any additional comments?
I voluntarily received a review copy.
Quality writing in a mail order bride concept
A very entertaining and well-written mail order bride'ish story mixed with mystery/suspense.

Second on just as good as the first!
I loved the first book in this series, and I am SO happy to see that the second book is just as good, if not better, than the first one! I preordered this MONTHS ago, because I was so excited to see that it was forthcoming. This series is fun, fast paced, well written. I love, love, love the characters. In this genre it is hard to find a unique character, and while hardly a unique setting, the characters have their own voices.
It's just a fun great read. If you are a fan of "Cozies" or period mysteries. Start this series!
I wish I wouldn't have to wait probably another year for the next one to come out!
    Took Awhile
I had enjoyed the first instalment of this series and had no hesitation in downloading the second when I saw it. I actually struggled with the beginning of this book. The plot was a little convoluted and Lola annoyed me. An unconventional woman going to great lengths to avoid her mother? The plot did hit its stride about two thirds of the way in and finished with Lola moving on in her new life. So I guess I ended up giving this a more favourable rating than I was going to.
    A Colorful Comical Mystery.
A nearly flat broke Lola Woodby and her cook Berta take a seemingly simple job of retrieving a diary only to find themselves in the center of a murder. The sequel to the book "Come Hell or Highball" brings back the ladies of the Discreet Retreval agency for more mystery and mayhem in an entertaning yet comical mystery. Just like the first book in the series I highly recommend this read for anyone who loves mystery.
    What a fun read!
I love this series! In this installment, down and out society girl Lola, and her partner/former cook Berta, go to a health farm to try to retrieve a diary for a client. Murder and mayhem ensue. The 1920s setting is great and the characters are engaging. Looking forward to the next one!
Great author. I really enjoy her books

It's late May 1944. Captain Billy Boyle is court-martialed on spurious charges of black-market dealings. Stripped of his officer's rank, reduced to private, and sentenced to three months' hard labor, Boyle is given an opportunity: He can avoid his punishment if he goes behind enemy lines to rescue a high-value Allied soldier.

Billy is flown in as part of a three-man team on June 5, 1944, the night before the Normandy invasion. Billy must solve the mystery of who is behind the murders, then lead a group escape from France back to England, with both the Germans and a killer hot on their heels.

    So good.
Top 3 in the Series. Starts strong and doesn't stop. Mr. Benn, can you hurry on the next?
    An edgier Billy Boyle!
James Benn has done a great job in developing the protagonist through the series. I found Billy Boyle as a much darker version than the character from the earlier novels. This seems to go hand in hand with a person subjected to the horrors of war over the past years. Peter Berkrot delivers once again as the narrator. Listen to the book and enjoy. You will not be disappointed.
    Well Done
This is definitely a twist on the Billy Boyle series and I liked it very much. The author built out the character more and left us wanting the next book with the interesting ending. Where does bully go next? If you like the series, you will like this book. Next please.....

Haven't read the book but the audio was great
Would you listen to The Fallen Princess again? Why?
Absolutely. It's a great story and of course, Laura is excellent with the reading of it.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Some parts did. I'm not usually a fan of the crime drama genre but these are pretty interesting. Might be the setting more than the genre though.
Have you listened to any of Laurel Schroeders other performances before? How does this one compare?
Excellent like all the others. She's read all of Sarah's books, which of course I have :).
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Why can't it keep the one from the book description? I like it. It suits. Plus the word Hallowmas is kinda awesome.
    Any additional comments?
These are really good books while I'm waiting for book 11 of the the After Cilmeri series *grins*. Plus they really help make work go faster.
