Magician Dimitri Fortunoff appears to have a fatal accident during the final trick of the performance that marks the end of the 4-year run of one of Las Vegass most renowned burlesque shows. Soon after, his body disappears, and its up to Lucky OToole to investigate. Head of Customer Relations for the Babylon resort, the crown jewel of the megaresorts dotting the Las Vegas Strip, Lucky has the brains and resources to find out what really happened to Fortunoff - and why.
But the timing couldnt be worse. Her live-in lover, Teddie, has morphed into a rock star and has been swallowed whole by life on the road. Her mother, Mona - pregnant, petulant, and perpetually underfoot - is giving new meaning to the term high maintenance. Paxton Dane, a handsome Texan long on charisma and short on history, is forcing himself into the void of Teddies absence, and a suave French chef is proving to be equal parts charm and venom, seasoned with a dash of irresistible. Did Dimitri Fortunoff really die, or is this an elaborate hoax? The trail leads Lucky through the miles of storm culverts under the city of Las Vegas, to the hordes of believers who gather for a glimpse of a UFO, then culminates on the catwalk above the crowd attending the annual Harry Houdini Séance, on Halloween, where Lucky must risk her life to catch a killer.
Las Vegas expert Deborah Coonts thrills again with this third installment in her dazzling series focused on casino problem solver Lucky OToole.

everyone should kick back and read this book
    Love this Series!
I love this series! I listened to this in audio format - and loved the narrator too! The story line was entertaining as always and I continue to love the characters and I'm thrilled with where her love interest is going. About time! wink, wink! This author does an excellent job of describing scenes and pulling you into the story! I look forward to reading or listening to the next one!
Easy listening, fast paced and funny
Good story, part mystery, part romance and part soap opera. Far fetched family saga, to say the least, but lightly handled. Given the labour laws regarding age, the legal drink and gambling ages, one wonders what jobs a 14 year old did in Las Vegas. I preferred other books in this series. The narration captures Lucky's voice well but murders the Australian accent in more ways than would appear possible. Thebeautiful jeremy has been sounding
Irish to cockney to Indian/Welsh on his route from Down Under.

    Publisher's Summary:
August 1944. Prague is where the story begins, with a seemingly casual exchange. But in wartime, is any act, any one thing, trivial? Decades later, in contemporary Chicago, the consequences emerge through the medium of television. Documentary filmmaker Ellie Foreman gets a letter prompted by the success of her show Celebrate Chicago. One viewer was the elderly Ben Sinclair. When he suddenly dies, his landlady, Mrs. Fleischman, finds Ellie's name among his effects and writes to her. Ellie, who hasn't a clue about a connection to Ben, is curious. And she agrees to help dispose of Ben Sinclair's possessions. She became a filmmaker to help people tell their stories. The books and wartime relics Ben left behind - will they be enough to tell his?
All too soon, Mrs. Fleischman dies. Then Ben's things are stolen from Ellie's suburban home. The single mom, working to move past her ex, doesn't know what to think. But she has to scramble for work and is soon embroiled in producing a campaign video for a steel magnate running for a Republican seat in the Illinois Senate. Despite these distractions, Ellie stays focused on her odd link to the dead man and turns to her father, a retired lawyer with deep roots in Chicago's Jewish community, for insights into the mystery of Ben Sinclair.
In time, a terrifying scenario develops that reaches back into several pasts. From the political present of the North Shore to the buried memories of the city's ethnic neighborhoods, the components of Ben's story eventually merge into an explosive climax.

How Have I Not Heard of this Author Before???
I loved this book!!! How have I not heard of this author before? I was a big Sandra Brown / Iris Johansen / Nora Roberts fan for a long time; but their formulas became too predicable for my liking.
This is an interesting protagonist who's working on some long term personal issues of her own while trying to juggle a daughter,a job and trying to not be killed.

One of the better entries in the series
If you could sum up Threadbare in three words, what would they be?
With Threadbare, Monica Ferris has gotten back into the swing with the Needlecraft Mystery series. A plot that you couldn't figure out immediately, more new characters, but retaining enough of the basic charm of the series to make it well worth reading/listening to.
ENJOYED THE STORY, BUT NOT THE NARRATION
When I'm in the mood for an "easy listening" book I often choose Monica Ferris. The stories are entertaining and the characters are likeable. I also enjoy the setting. Excelsior is a real place I have visited many times. I've had lunch at Antiquity Rose - it really does exist and the food is very good. If you've enjoyed other Monica Ferris books, you'll probably enjoy this one.
Narrator Susan Boyce has a pleasing voice, good diction, and did an acceptable job with character voices. However her pauses and emphasis on words seemed "off" to me. Many times it sounded to me like she was reading the text for the first time. I would definately listen closely to the audio sample of any other book she narrated before I purchased it.
The only needlework I've ever done was a few crewel embroidery projects many years ago. I enjoyed it, but it did not become hobby for me. The book includes discussions of needlework, but I don't find them overly long or tedious.
This is a relaxing "cozy" mystery. I believe I might have enjoyed it more with a different narrator.
Monica Ferris is one of my favorite authors
I always happy to have a new release from Monica Ferris - her charactors are very real.
OK for mind candy and you are a fiber person
What did you like best about Threadbare? What did you like least?
I enjoyed the light hearted story. It was a no brainer just to listen to it. It is very specific target audience: fiber artists. The story line was light on substance and a little moralistic but overall I enjoy her writing.
What do you think your next listen will be?
I will read the Tipping Point
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
    nothing to recommend
Did Threadbare inspire you to do anything?
My grandmother worked hardanger so it was interesting to hear how difficult it is to do. I would like to explore it.
    I thoroughly enjoyed this installment
I thoroughly enjoyed this installment, especially the ending. I highly recommend this audiobook/book to fans of cozy mysteries, but suggest starting with the first installment.

Reader emits noises that are distracting
It's unkind, but whether it's a result of a dry mouth or popping sinuses, there are noises associated with the reader's voice that are terribly distracting. These noises combined with her strange interpretation of many characters' voices make it difficult to listen to this recording. This is a very enjoyable R. Rendell book, but the reader definitely detracts.
    Amazing labyrinth
Intricate tale that gets creepier as it unfolds. Terrific narrator adds to the atmosphere in an understated manner. Good character development envoked my empathy in unimagined ways.
    one of Rendell's best
Ruth Rendell in her prime. Gripping, beautifully and slowly unfolded story and characters you cannot forget. The narrator captures many of the cringe-inducing aspects of this novel/mystery. A terrific experience.
Can't guess the ending til the end
Only Rendell can make a reader understand, empathize, and even and root for a homocidal sociopath.
As usual, rendall is a great storyteller but...
Some parts a bit on the gruesome side and hard to read. She is an amazing writer. Always the surprises!!

    Not as Advertised
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I could not put my finger as to why this was not a good use of 15 hrs of listening. I purchased as I liked Don't cry, and I liked Karen white as a reader. I purchased all three but should have just purchase as I could listen. Very disappointed as the main heroine was supposed to be tough and strong. I did not like our heroine or Nick, they both came off weak. This is a turn off for me. When the sneak preview said Me lea was strong, I listened out of order as I am not a person who is compelled to listen in order. I can pick up a story without having to listen in order.
What do you think your next listen will be?
    not sure
What about Karen Whites performance did you like?
I love her voice, but she could only do her best based on the author/editor work.
Was Dead by Morning worth the listening time?
No it was not. Our hero Dereck gets lost with the too many characters introduced in this story
    Any additional comments?
not a good spend on this trilogy
    Better than the first book!!
The author did a much better job of building the tension and suspense earlier in this book than the first in the series which dragged in parts in my opinion. I still liked the first book overall even with its faults and the narrator took a bit of time to get used to but her voice finally grew on me and I came to like it in the end. This second book though moves more quickly and gets more involved in answering the lingering questions from the first. Though there are more questions left to ponder for book 3 in the series this book did a good job of completing an important part of the story while still leaving you hanging for the next part. I have already purchased the third book and am preparing to listen to it right away.

    Fascinating Plot
Wonderful read for feminists. History of women's place in British Society revealed in a fascinating serial murder case. Powerful story that keeps the listener glued to book.
    Intricate murder mystery.
This is a slow-paced, detail-oriented murder mystery with a lot of twists, turns, and dead ends. It's a bit "dated", so if you are interested in up-to-date, technological procedurals with current cultural references, this may not be your cup of tea. That said, it is interesting, well-written, and has good characterizations. The narrator does a good job with the different character voices. The ending ties up the loose ends a bit too abruptly for me, but maybe that's just the "twistiness" of the story itself.

    So entertaining and surprising!
A good old popcorn kinda story but with a new age kinda sensibility. We have a complex and unusual lead character to follow here. And, with crime fiction, I think if you can say you were in suspense, but intrigued, and entertained all at once, the novel is a success. I can say that here. And it is.The narrator, is perfectly suited to the material. He takes us on this journey and subtly navigates along with us through the plot twists and turns. Really great work! Really enjoyable! Highly recommended!!!
    Loved it
I happened to listen to this book after just failing to finish a disappointing audible download. This was just what I was looking for: quick, smart, and entertaining. I was into the story from the get go, and REALLY enjoyed it.
I live in the DC area and loved the authentic, DC-centric setting. Pelecanos doesn't just name drop all of the local bars, streets, schools, etc; he actually gets them right. He even nails the changing atmosphere of the city today. The narrator is an excellent, giving easily recognizable and distinct voices to the characters.
As to the story, the Spero Lucas character is a good one, as is his interesting family and background. I'll be looking forward to checking out the next book.
    Something different, something good
Pellecanos' entry into this growing genre - Iraq or Afghanistan vets returning to the US - is excellent. Don Winslow's "Savages" was another example of this type of novel.
The moral relativism, the tension between the brothers and the unforeseen consequences of one bad decision are themes well explored.
It is not Jack Reacher, although both protagonists were in the military. If anything it reminds me of the excellent movie "Four Brothers."
I look forward to the next in this series.
Washington, D.C. the city the mind set
George Pelecanos knows Washington, D.C. Great story - exciting - a lot of my friends feel he is brutal/ethnic/whatever just writes a good engaging story. The narrator Dion Graham makes one feel out of his mouth to ..ears.
    Strong, typical Pelecanos.
What made the experience of listening to The Cut the most enjoyable?
Pelecanos' characters are always good - believable, lively, unpredictable.
What does Dion Graham bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
    Good reading.

    Chapters.
I hate it when the chapters don't align to that offered as chapters from the book. One has trouble finding the place to start listening, when distracted. I loved the story.
    Jack does scrapyard challenge.
What did you love best about Nothing to Lose?
Closed, stifling, suspicious? Jack can punch all the way to freedom.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Nothing to Lose?
Early on Jack enters the town and orders a beer, the locals give him the evil eye, and Jack responds like Jack does. Stereo and deluxe.
What about Jeff Hardings performance did you like?
Jeff gets Reacher, awkward, elusive, charismatic, blunt. Believe, I tell you, believe!
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Come on this is Jack Reacher, if you get moved by fiction, this is not your genre. You get a kick! Plenty of those in this novel, each as purging as dry figs.
    Bit pedestrian and fanciful tale
Would you listen to Nothing to Lose again? Why?
Wouldn't listen again as unlike the other Reacher novels it has poor character development , little emotional connection and fanciful story.
What will your next listen be?
    Simon Kernick - Stay alive
Have you listened to any of Jeff Hardings other performances? How does this one compare?
Good performance by jeff harding but struggles to work with poor material.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
No part of the book really engaged me emotionally and the whole experience left an insubstantial feeling.
    Any additional comments?
After listening to all the reacher novels so far this has made me want to take a long wait before trying book 13.
Reacher ... a magnet for trouble
Oh Reacher Reacher when will you learn to keep your 6' 5" frome out of trouble. If Lee Child's creation did then we would robbed of a dusty, eccentric, travelling rough neck with the moral code of the Lone Ranger wedded to the chivalry of a medieval knight. This strory saunters along gathering dust and trouble. None of the trouble is of Reachers making of course though in the breaking of a few arms and heads he is more than able to find solutions.
Without the voice of Jeff Harding ... who in my mind is THE Reacher ... the vision would not be complete.

Fifteen years ago, a young girl by the name of Moonlight Smith went to the house of her best friend, Nicky Nowak, for a sleepover. Moonlight joined the family for breakfast the following morning and was then picked up by her mother. Shortly after, Mr. Nowak went for a walk. He was never seen again.
Autumn has arrived on the mountains above Trafalgar, British Columbia, Canada, and the promise of winter is in the air. Constable Molly Smith is sitting by the fireplace with Adam Tocek of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police when Tocek and his dog, Norman, are called to a wilderness camping ground to join the search for a little boy who sneaked away from his family looking for bears. The child is found, dirty, terrified, and weeping but unharmed. Then the inquisitive Norman digs up something else: human bones.
The ID isnt positive, but it is enough to have Sergeant John Winters of the Trafalgar City Police pulling old boxes from the basement to reopen the Brian Nowak investigation. He finds a family shattered beyond recognition by Brians disappearance. Mrs. Nowak is an empty shell of a woman, dressed in pajamas, never leaving the house. Her son, Kyle, haunts the streets of Trafalgar at night and spends his days creating beautiful but highly troubling art. Nicky Nowak lives in Vancouver and has grown up to be gorgeous, charming, elegant. Yet behind that façade lies a woman whose heart has closed so tightly against human relationships that she comes to Trafalgar trailing in her wake a terrifying threat to another innocent family.
As the investigation into the life and disappearance of Brian Nowak grows, old secrets are brought to light and new ones struggle to remain hidden.
Among the Departed is more than a mystery novel: it is also a story of lovelove new and old, long concealed, life affirming, and fatal.

    The Best of the Series
A missing boy on Holiday is the impetus for the Trafalgar B.C. police to search the woods where they locate the body of a man missing for fifteen years. It is particularly meaningful for Constable Molly Smith; back when she was 14 year old Moonlight Smith, she was one of the last people to see Brian Nowak alive. In the intervening years 15 years since Brian's disappearance his family has disintegrated. His wife is a practically a recluse; a shadow of herself. The son Kyle is an angry man incapable of forming human relationships, and still lives in the basement of his mother's house.

Finding people who don't want to be found is a young man's game. But when a beautiful celebrity begs semi-retired Walter Sherman to locate her nephew, he can't refuse. In his search for Harry Levine, Walter soon discovers that others are desperate to find him and willing to kill for what he has: the written confession by the mastermind behind the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Among those clamoring for the confession are the Kennedy family, renegade Russians seeking the Czar's gold, and a powerful man with connections to the CIA. Finding Harry is one thing, but hiding him from professional killers pushes Walter's aging skills to the limit. It's a wild chase across Europe, Mexico, and the Caribbean in Richard Greener's heart-stopping thriller that offers an unexpected twist on existing JFK conspiracy theories.

    Very enjoyable story
great follow up novel to the first. I would like more books with the same characters.
Listen to "The Knowland Retribution" first.
You will enjoy "The Lacey Confession" a lot more if you listen to its prequel, "The Knowland Retribution," first. Our author, Richard Greener, does a good job filling in the backstory, for those who haven't read his previous work; but he creates such complex, intricate plots and characters that a brief summary must leave out a lot of the richness. This time out, our hero ??? Walter Sherman, A.K.A. "The Locator" ??? succumbs, against his better judgement, to the pleas of a beautiful woman; and tumbles into a web of intrigue and deception. Like all good authors, Mr. Greener writes about what he knows ??? and he knows a lot: not just about current events, history, politics, and geography, but also ??? as a heart-transplant recipient ??? about having a heart attack. Our 60-year-old protagonist, Walter Sherman, suffers one in the midst of his quest; and Greener, without subjecting us to the gory details, takes us through Sherman's collapse and subsequent recovery from triple-bypass surgery. Unlike many other indestructible thriller heros, Walter Sherman ??? despite his toughness and his wily street-smarts ??? has a vulnerable heart, in both the metaphorical sense and the biological sense. Sherman patronizes a neighborhood bar called "Billy Smith's" on the tiny Virgin Island of St. John. Like in Donald Westlake's Dortmunder series, the bar ??? along with its "regulars" ??? provides an anchor, touchstone, comic relief, and pause-for-breath in the story. We come to love the "regulars," and long to visit the island. I hope that Mr. Greener's new heart will allow him to continue providing us with more adventures of The Locator; and, as far as I'm concerned, Marc Vietor can go on narrating them.
    because of the Finder...
watched the Finder TV show and loved it. while the show has taken many artistic liberties in deviating from the books, the books are decent
I would not recommend reading the Lacey Confession without the Knowland Retribution, but it can be done.
I will listen the stories again and I think you will find the dramatization performed expertly. the story is good but not my typical style and therefore my lower rating. too bad this is the end of the Locator series.
    Found one thing.
He used his skills to find one person.
