Intriguing story read by my favorite narrator.

Would you consider the audio edition of Blood Rush to be better than the print version?

I have not read the print version; but since Imogen Church narrates the audio, nothing could be better. I discovered Helen Black because Imogen Church does the narration. I am addicted to Imogen Church, and I love thrillers, so I search for thrillers narrated by her. This was a good find.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Blood Rush?

Maybe the scene in the crack house? This was a very atmospheric, scene heavy novel, so there were many.

What does Imogen Church bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

Thanks for giving me a chance to rhapsodize about my favorite narrator! She is able to embody each character with their unique voice, without drawing attention to the transition. Her velvety voice draws one inside the story, and is never distracting in itself. Her timing is always flawless. I find it very difficult to wean myself off of Imogen Church when I want to listen to a book narrated by someone else. I have listened to four Imogen Church narrations in a row. My definition of bliss is to be read aloud to by Imogen Church.

This is a fascinating glimpse inside the world of girl gangs, poverty and adolescent angst.

I would give no stars if possible

I hated this from the minute I started listening - the gang fight - the awful speech - etc. but when I got to the part where the heroine/solicitor was not capable of keeping staff because she was so untidy and disorganised - and then when we caught her trying to make a 360 degree circuit/twirl on her secretary's office chair, I really decide that I had better things to do.

I bought this based on quite good reviews - but my goodness, I found it abysmal in both characters AND writing.

Not a book I would recommend

Entertaining!

Nero Wolfe was created by author Rex Stout in 1934. I read many of the books written by Stout and always enjoyed them. Robert Goldsborough continued the series beginning in 1986.

Nero Wolfe is an eccentric, slightly grumpy, and brilliant detective. Wolfe rarely leaves his home in New York City. Archie Goodwin is Wolfe's capable, wise cracking assistant. They are one of the most unique and interesting teams in mystery fiction.

This story is briskly paced, and includes some colorful characters. It is a "whodunit" that had me guessing right to the end.

Narrator L.J. Ganser has just the right tone for this narration.

There is no graphic violence or sex, and no vulgar language.

Nero and Archie return! 4 & 1/2 stars--not quite 5

Robert Goldsborough has done a pretty good job re-creating The Nero Wolfe mystery series. I've truly enjoyed reading them. Mainly, the only thing that gives a slight discomfort is that Goldsborough has brought them out of the 1940-1960 time frame they were originally in to a more modern time (not sure when, exactly, but they now use computers). This would make them both be retirement age, or beyond, but Archie is still his eternally young self, and Nero never changes anyway. Suppose he actually is timeless :-)

In this book, Wolfe is originally approached by someone from a huge mega-church who is seeking help in finding someone who is anonymously putting warning notes into the collection bag that threaten the minister, Barnaby Bay. Because of Wolfe's general antipathy toward organized religion he simply refuses to take on the case. So Archie suggests that one of the men who does investigations for them, Fred Durkin, be employed for the job instead. Unfortunately, someone gets shot with Fred Durkin's gun after he dares to suggest that the notes are an inside job, and he is arrested. This, finally, gets Wolfe motivated to take the job because he won't let anything happen to those he cares about.

I have enjoyed listening to this series. In general Goldsborough has done a surprisingly good job of pulling Wolfe and Goodwin onto fresh pages. He has kept the original cast of characters, and in general, the same formula for the books that worked so well for Rex Stout. And I've read all the originals several times, so I think I'm a good critic. Generally, I have also enjoyed LJ Ganser's performance of them.

A strong story of family, loss and redemption.

Sara J. Henry's second book is another solid novel set in the Lake Placid region of New York. It is a simple then complicated and back to simple type of a story beginning with the discovery of a body in a frozen lake. By coincidence, fate of just plain dumb luck, Troy is there when a mans body is found and recovered from the frozen lake. She knows the person and shares her house with his girlfriend and begins writing a story for the local newspaper. I'll leave the rest of the story for you to discover and enjoy on your own. It is often touching, frightening, emotional and smart all within a single chapter. Some of our friends from Learning to Swim are back, in very minor - but not forgotten - roles.

Part of my enjoyment of this series is Ms. Henry's spot-on description of the area and the people who inhabit this cold, remote place. They are indeed a hardy people who care about one another and do silly things like cut blocks of ice out of the lake to build and castle in the dead of winter. Occasionally, she takes a little literary license with some of the locations or behavior of the characters, but having many friends who live there, I believe she respects them and what it is they stand for. It is not an easy place to live, but some of the happiest people I know live there and the surrounding 50 miles. Sara has lived it and, if her writing about it is any indication, loves the tri-lakes especially those that call it home.

I feel I must comment about the Narrator. I did not care for Abby Craden's portrayal of Troy. It was like she was telling the story in a whisper, like it was a secret. This is not how this character tells her story. I found this style/approach troublesome. I hope Suzanne Toren returns as Troy Chance giving us the strength and confidence the author has given her.

Certainly a worth while listen/read indeed!

Engaging Mystery in a Peaceful Setting

I have read or listened to many of Charlotte MacLeod's books. I enjoy the characters, the humor, the settings and the mysteries.

This book takes place in a large house in rural Wales. The author spends just enough time describing the settings, the characters, and some ancient Welsh traditions. As I listened, I envisioned how the place and the characters looked.

Early in the book the pace is relaxed - that was fine for me. When a murder takes place, the pace picks up appropriately.

For me the humor was gentle and chuckle inducing. It helped make two especially annoying characters bearable.

Narrator William Dufris does an admirable job voicing a large number of male and female characters. It took me a chapter or two to get accustomed to his "rhythm". I'm not a stickler about "correctness" of character accents. If you are I would suggest that you listen to the sample.

This book does not include graphic sex or violence. It is not a "thriller." If you enjoy a relaxed "cozy" mystery with a good story and a sense of humor, this book is for you.

I love Charlotte MacLeod's writing, but this book never really grabbed me ... until I listened to William Dufris's reading. Now I understood more of the humor, etc. I can't say enough good things about this performance!

Have not read a book for some time since signing up to Audible. Still love the feel of books but I have my phone and book with me all the time Great for a busy life.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes this did. Sort of had an idea but the twists and turns kept me really interested and love the reader. Will look for other books she reads.

least expected

wow this book touches me, I think mostly because it dealt with kids and the things that they go through while growing up and in school.. you never know how a person feels on the inside they may look like they have it all together on the outside but they are screaming on the inside.. the same goes for parents and the whole family.. this whole family looked perfect on the outside but had more sadness, and struggle than anyone else in town.. I'm ready for book 4.

Like this Series Despite Stereotypical Characters

I enjoyed this third installment of the Scumble River Mysteries. I find Skye likable and entertaining, even if her taste in men is terrible. The mystery remains when Skye will fix her love life. In this book we encounter lots of self centered people, high school cheerleaders and beauty pageant contestants. I think I would have preferred more three dimensional characters. I mean does every single popular kid have to be mean, weight obsessed, completely shallow and basically indistinguishable from each other? Skye manages to be much more sympathetic to people than I would have been. I plan to continue this series and see what she's up to in the next book.

His voice is very monotone and he speaks to quickly. Needs to slow down and punctuate certain sentences. Also needs to change the pitch of different characters.

Great story idea, character dialogue is stilted

The idea of the story is very good but the dialogue between characters in the book seems a little stilted. I just can't imagine people in the real world talking to each other like that. Also, there seems to be some production quality issues early on in the recording. I swear I can hear some background noises like pages being turned in the first hour.

Despite all that this was a very enjoyable listen. While listening I kept imagining this book as a movie like The Crow. I look forward to listening to some other Mark Edward Hall books.

Interesting mystery, almost incidental to story.

The Rabbi takes a leave of absence to spend 3 months in Jerusalem. The book was publshed in 1972, so was written in the period between the 6-day war (1967) and the Yom Kippur War (1973). This was around the time I first visited Israel, so I experienced a certain nostalgia in the listening. Among other things, the story dramatizes the tension between the sabras and non-religious Jews and the strictly observant Hasidim and other religious sects, a tension that has only become more exacerbated with time, especially in Jerusalem and environs. In this story, it is dramatized mostly by conflicts between parents and children. The mystery itself concerns the murder of an auto trader, apparently by a terrorist bomb. As usual, the Rabbi eventually solves the crime for the police, seemingly by logic, although I found it hard to believe he could have discerned all that he told just by a careful examination of some of the evidence. Despite my disappointment, I don't regret the time spent listening. The narration by George Guidall is excellent, as usual.

Narrator needs to practice

Not the best Sharon McCone mystery, but still an enjoyable story. Not sure why certain elements were introduced, like "Jake" being involved in illegal arms dealing, if it apparantly had little or nothing to do with the plot and then was just left hanging at the end, but no big deal. Another worthwhile listen from Ms. Muller.

But the one thing that drove me crazy, is the one that most frequently drives me crazy about narrators. Ridiculously mis-pronounced words. It would seem that anyone hired to narrate a recorded book would first read the book, perhaps highlight the words they don't know, and then look them up. Or listen to previous narrators who got them correct. Or most basically, ask the author who certainly knows them very well. Some are local dialect, in which case the reader might ask someone who lives there. Some are less commonly known words in general. But if the author has chosen to include them in the story, the reader should prepare and get them right. Small stuff maybe, but it's jarring to the ear, and diminishes the enjoyment of the book. I've spent many wonderful days in the wine country. Someone please look up how to say Lytton Springs. I'm also a pilot. McCone long flew and loved a delightful aerobatic plane. It's called a Citabria (basically aerobatic spelled backwards). Not a common name outside aviation circles, but...really not that hard! Ms. Hicks absolutely butchered it. Please Laura, if you ever read another McCone novel, prepare better!

This book is worth your credit!

Absolutely. I liked that Sharon was the center of attention again and the story was very compelling.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I think Ted and Ray are my favorites but they don't get a lot of airtime in this book.

What does Laura Hicks bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

Voices for everyone - even when I read her books now I will have voices for all the characters.

Great Mystery Book!

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

As the story unfolded in all it's complexities, I thought that I had figured it out. I was really wrong!

My favorite character was of course the central character, Sharon McCone.
