Get ready to meet a new kind of superhero

Some call him 'Ghost', a few call him 'Horseman', he is on assignment in Florida to find a serial killer. He carries a silver case with fantastic tools but no cell phone. His detective work is familiar to Phillip Marlowe, Sam Spade, Inspector Linley, and Kinsey Milhone, as well as the FBI and local law enforcement. But he is dramatically different from all of them. Just ask FBI Special Agent Deanna Rezvani, some crooks, and a whole lot of supernatural bad guys. See the publisher's summary for more hints. No spoilers here. I was fortunate to get this one super cheap courtesy of Book Gorilla, but it is worth real money. Excellent imagery and characterization make this a fine urban fantasy with a twist.

I Loved This Book. Can't Wait for the Next One!

I really enjoyed this book and the audiobook just made it that much more enjoyable.

The narrator was perfect for this book!

The chemistry between John Spectre, aka Ghost aka Horseman, and FBI Special Agent Reznazi,aka Rez, was fantastic.

When a pro-choice serial killer known as Smiling Jack reappears after a four year hiatus, Ghost and Rez team up to track the killer down before he kills again. Rez's goal is to stop these killings and bring the killer to justice. Ghost, on the other hand, is seeking a more permanent and lethal end to the killer.

At first the FBI refuses to reopen the Smiling Jack case believing it to be a hoax. However, when a body turns up in Florida this time they can no longer deny that Smiling Jack is real, and they must take the case seriously if they are to catch the killer. Rez is pulled from the investigation that she started on her own time, and Ghost is threatened with federal jail time unless he backs off the case and lets the FBI handle things from here on out.

None of this stops Ghost and Rez from doing whatever they have to do to catch the killer. There are some supernatural events that slow Ghost down and make his life more difficult, but in the end Ghost overcomes all obstacles.

Brandon McKernan does a wonderful job as narrator.

Reall Good Jazz Mystery

Fifty years ago, famous jazz singer Georgia Valentineâs death was ruled a suicide by an accidental overdose. Recently a private letter written from Georgia to a friend has been discovered and it suggests that Georgia was killed.

PI Casey McKie is intrigued and goes to New York to figure out of Georgia was killed and by who. Casey starts her search with numerous shady jazz clubs, Georgiaâs friends and drug dealer, and a mafia boss. She also looks into the investigators that deemed Georgiaâs death a suicide.

This was a really good book. You can tell that Joan Merrill loves jazz. As you follow Casey through the investigation you can hear the music in the background. The mystery was great, I didnât know who did it until the end but everyone had a connection to Georgia and a reason to be a suspect.

This is my first book by Joan Merrill that I have read, but I liked how you could read this as a stand alone book. I liked it so much I will be getting the preceding three books.

Delightful Jazz Mystery!

Casey is in New York investigating the death of a world famous jazz singer, Georgia Valentine. Did she die of a drug over dose as the coroner, said or was it murder.

Casey takes into the modern day jazz scene as she visits some of the colorful, often seedy locations in New York while she investigates.

And All That Madness makes reference to some of the classic jazz singers, such as Elia Fitzerald. I loved these references as they made this modern day jazz mystery have the feel of a more classic mystery.

Ms. Merrill's characters are colorful and quirky and the plot well developed.

Different than the others

This is one of the best books in the series. But, only because it is a bit more realistic than the others. Ollie doesn't spend a lot of time stepping on the toes of the secret service. She had her own problems to deal with in her department. I'm sure the next book will have her back in the middle of things but I did enjoy this one.

The end! I had to listen to the last 1+ just because there was no stopping point. I had to see how it ended. It kept me on the edge.

How great this art!

Yes, particularly one who likes art and art history.

What did you like best about this story?

The narrator was terrific. But I thoroughly enjoyed the attention to detail in the history of the art works. Aaron Elkins did his homework on this one. I enjoyed the vivid descriptions of the different cities, felt as though I was right there with the protagonist. And of course, I loved the artwork descriptions and the provenance that went with each work of art. This book had me from the outset. Elkins provided enough mystery to keep me listening and re-listening to certain aspects of conversations looking for clues. This was a great read.

Have you listened to any of Corey Snows other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, I have not, but will in the future.

Entertaining

This is a light, quick and entertaining read. The interesting facts about art only make the story more authentic. I look forward to the next book.

A good story done in by a poor narrator

I would recommend this as a good read: easy and even a bit informative about how things may work in the world of fine art investigators and exhibitions. The story even has a bit of a sense of humor to it, but you wouldn't know it by listening to the narrator. He sounds as if he was performing in front of a junior high assembly.

Definitely one of the best series I have read in ages

I just finished the 6th book.

In just a few days.

You don't have ANY IDEA what that means to someone who is so busy I barely have time to sleep.

So, instead, I've been up half the night reading, to find what happens with Samantha Jane.

The first six books I have read have a good pace.

The stories are interesting and varied.

The characters are people you like.

There isn't too much woosiness, pining over - does he love me, does he not - and all that really annoying stuff that cozy mystery writers often fill their pages with, ad nauseum.

The mysteries in each of the books are intriguing and you want to know more about what happens - so much, that it really is hard to put down.

And yes, even though I have to teach for the next several hours - and to write more articles and to update one of my own books....

I will be reading book 7 tonight.

OH...one last thing. Editing. VERY WELL DONE!

Whenever I read Kindle books, I make notes or highlight all the errors I find in the books.

Connie Shelton's books - very few errors. And those that I find are insignificant.

Best editing I have seen in a long time.

Can't read just one.

This is one of those series that grabbed me with the first word and I've not been able to put them down yet. The characters are real and became family. I have fretted over what was going on with Sam and Beau from one book to The next. I empathetic time for a longtime.

I can't say enough about this Author. I am going to read her ninth book in this series next. I like the way she writes. Always a mystery to solve and some romance. Every chapter keeps your interest going.

Fantastic Again!!!!

I hope that this series continues because she left us hanging at the end of this book!!! I absolutely Love, Love, Love this series and this author!!! I have not downloaded her first book in the other series that she has and I can't wait to read it, hoping it is as good as this one!!! I love to bake and my dream has always been to have my own bakery and this book makes me wish that the bakery was mine!!! Absolutely fantastic writing, keep them coming. I also have another series of murder mystery bakery books and there must be between 10 - 15 books in that series already, she keeps them coming once a year and I love that series also. It is Joanne Fluke in the Hannah Swenson series, and I hope this series by Connie Shelton goes for a long time and I am so glad that she writes more than 1 book in the series in a year!!!!!

Sure there's a lot pressure, what with this being Lee Ofsted's first real golf tournament. And especially when she thinks of all the sacrifices she's made to get here, but still Lee can't understand why all of a sudden she can't hit a golf ball without slicing it. In Aaron and Charlotte Elkins' A Wicked Slice, Lee's errant golf shot, however, is only the beginning of the tournament's troubles. The intensity takes a sudden upturn when the tour's best golfer goes missing, and ignites a mess of anger and jealousy amongst the other golfers. Performed by the engaging veteran Julia Farhat, A Wicked Slice is a thrilling and fun mystery with just the right dose of romance.

illogical, unrealistic, cliched, and one of Julie Farhat's worst performances using a whiny nasal twang that was insufferable. Only the subject matter kept me listening to the halfway point and got this selection rated at two stars; don't waste the credit or the time.

What made the experience of listening to Last Diner Standing the most enjoyable?

The narration remained excellent with a low key yet polished use of nuance and expression. As the second entry in the series, it also had more time to develop a storyline beyond merely introducing the large, diverse case of supporting characters. Each of the cast of characters appears to have a niche and how the author weaves a story that allows the characters to all "do their own thing" is quite remarkable. If you enjoyed the first Rose Strickland mystery you will enjoy this even more.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Henry, the bodyguard and chef, as one of my sons is well on his way to becoming just like him. I also feel a lot of empathy for Jacks, the people pleaser stuck with Rose for a younger sister.

What does Luci Christian bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

The narrator managers to help keep everything moving forward and avoids building tension in this story which must be a comedy as much as a mystery.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

You have to be the tree!

I could not stop reading

I really love the characters in this series and the action just keep moving. The only disappointment was that the heroine did not figure out who did it it just sort of popped into the story and didn't make sense

Laugh out loud

Who was your favorite character and why?

Emily Castles, because I can see me in her- which is good, in a protagonist. The characters around her are mostly larger than life, and we see them through Emily's off-beat perspective.

Which character as performed by Alison Larkin was your favorite?

Oh, I couldn't possibly pick! Alison Larkin does an amazing job with all of them.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me (and also my boyfriend) snort with laughter. We are still quoting bits of the story to each other, and laughing.

Any additional comments?

Only that fans of Michael Innes and Edmund Crispin, people who have perhaps given up on any modern writer of detective fiction coming up to the high comic standard of these authors, would do well to give this work a try, and to keep an eye on Helen Smith's work in the future.

Murder at a Romance Convention of a British Sort

An American Blogger wins a writing contest and ends up invited to a Romance Novelist's convention in England. She is delighted. She loves reading and she is eager to meet the authors of the books she has been reviewing. Of course she isn't to know that this is her last invitation.

Smith's part time sleuth, Emily Castles has been hired to perform temporary services at the convention. She finds herself in the midst of as fine a group of English eccentrics as she is likely to meet and ends up investigating the death of the Blogger.

I really liked this novel. It's a bit shorter than I normally listen to, but I did like Smith's satire. I found myself backing up the file to listen to the romance scene written by one of the characters in the story for the contest. I thought it was wickedly funny and reminded me a bit of the old Purple Prose contest that used to be hosted by one of the early popular Romance blogs-- (AAR? I can't remember the name unfortunately.)

Anyway, while not a fabulous mystery this was a very fun read and come recommended. Also look out for the next book in the series!

Not my thing

Perfection!

As always, Susan Erickson is the best narrator out there for this series. I can't imagine anyone else narrating the In Death series! The story was great and love the voices she gives to each character. A+

Graphic description

The only reason for the four stars was, for me personally, the graphic details during the murders was too much for my listening. I've listen to/read many of the "in death" series and don't remember any with this level of detail. The narrator is excellent. Her voice/accent change makes the story. I still will read/listen to more of the "in death" series.

Where does Thankless in Death rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

It ranks high. I think it is the best of the "In Death" series so far and I've read all of them.

What does Susan Ericksen bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

She does an excellent job with the accents and different moods that need to be conveyed through the story. She did an especially great job with the voice/tone/mood of the antagonist in this story. It gave me the chills to listen to "him" talk.

Any additional comments?

This book was one of, if not the best Robb has done with this series. The characters were so real. The antagonist was one of the most dangerous, mean, spiteful and all around evil characters yet. There were parts that were gruesome to hear-I skipped a little. But the plot and ideas, cat and mouse situations were just superb. I also liked that Roark's family was in it and softened Dallas even more as a person. I'd recommend this to anyone who likes a good mystery,
