A Private Eye, Falcons, and Dead Boy

Interesting and different, A Witness Above, is the story of Frank Pavlicek, an ex-cop, turned private eye, who runs into the body of a teenage boy while out hunting with his red-tailed falcon in the hills of Virginia. Frank's bread and butter for the past thirteen years has been divorce and non-violent cases, NOT murder, since leaving the NYPD. But what he finds in the teenager's wallet changes all that. The Virginia accents are spot on, as well as many of the attitudes of whites versus blacks. I appreciated that the book wasn't full of expletives, yet was an excellent mystery. The faith and love expressed by the mother of the murdered boy and the way she reached out to Pavlicek was one of my favorite parts of the book. Great listen!

Murderous Honeymoon

Skye can't get away from murder, not even on her honeymoon. This is a very enjoyable addition to the series.

the cruise

I think I liked this book most of all because May played a major part in this book, and this time her character wasn't always just bugging Sky but she was actually with the group in trying to solve the murder. I think Sky and Trixie make a cool couple this is not their first mystery to try and solve, but with added spouses it made the book more interesting because you got to see more of the personalities for Jed and Owen.

This book did have me glued. I couldn't put my phone down to stop listening. This was the first time I was so unsure of who the murder was, but I enjoyed going along the journey with them in solving the murder. The one part of the book that had me nervous was when sky got stabbed and I really thought she was hurt very bad. Overall great book, there are 2 more books left in this series and I am very curious to see how they end.

Loved this audiobook. The narration was outstanding and the plot devine. Can't wait for the next book.

Oops She Did It Again!

Skye and Wally finally get to go on their honeymoon but of course they are not on board without family, friends and a murder to solve!!

While being stalked by the killer on the islands their cruise ship stops at, they still manage to have some fun with their friends and Skye and Trixie get some fabulous batik fabric shopping in! Made me drool over the beautiful descriptions of the fabric - I am a fabriholic, so of course I would love to take a cruise and go shopping there!

Will they all put their heads together and figure out the killer, or will May be hauled off to be questioned by the FBI when they get back to the US?

Read it and see....you will love it!!

Enjoyable Cozy Mystery!

I cant imagine anything worse than going on your honeymoon with your MOTHER! Okay maybe going on your honey with a murderer on the same cruise ship! Well in Skye Denison-Boyds latest adventure she has both on her honeymoon. Her mother is on the same cruise ship as Skye and Wally and there is also a murderer on board.

I liked Denise Swansons new book for a number of reasons. Firstly I love Scumble River and Skye and Wally.

I identified with the characters in the other narrators voice. I felt sort of lost listening to this narrator ,I never felt like I was drawn into the story I was too busy trying to figure out who was who in the story.

You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

The story was good and the narrator's voice wasn't a bad voice , but I have come to identify the other narrator with Debra Knot .

Thought-provoking, Action-Packed Thrill Ride

The third book in Eyre Price's Crossroads series, STAR KILLER STAR is a delicious blend of action, plot twists, subtle humor, and philosophy. Daniel Erickson is a killer. But more than that, he's a good man. Doing what needs to be done, what only he can do, because of the serious mojo bestowed upon him by a mysterious character that has kept him alive - more than once.

Terrible On So Many Levels

First the narration was childish and whiny. The female characters were supposed to be in the 55-70 year old age group but the narrator sounded like she was about 12 years old. Plus--what's going on here--is 60 the new 90?? Sixty isn't old enough to have the driving difficulties and elderly issues the story encompasses. These unlikable, catty women seemed to fit better into the mid to late 80's or even 90's age set not 55! Ridiculous.

Bad body image , couldn't finish

I was offended by the constant body shaming comments. The main character appears to be the author's idea of what size 16 women are like. (Even though the average American woman is a size 14). It seemed every few pages there was something "fat" people can't do or she was eating, always unhealthy food. The mystery wasn't interesting enough to overcome the fat shaming occurring I the book. I had to stop listening.

The author had done some research on quilting and wilt shows. However, as this book was probably intended to appeal to quilters, a bit more should have been included. I understand not wanting to bog the reader down in details, but saying there are only pieced and appliqué quilts and inferring that all quilts are judged I'm only those two categories is quite incorrect.

Not bad overall, story was OK and an interesting idea. Could have done without the political commentary.

First audiobook

liked it it was a cute book. You should read it. That lady is exactly what I'd expect an older lady crime solver to be.

ruined by the reader

I really liked the creative storyline and clever turns of phrase, but the reader trashed this otherwise good read by mispronouncing many simple words. "Mantilla" and "soupcon" come to mind. There was no literarary reason, just ignorance. And where was the director? It was like being ankle-bitten by a yappy little dog. Very annoying.

Don't Waste Your Time

What disappointed you about The Farm?

This was perhaps the worst book I've read in quite some time. Characters were very well described, and while the first few chapters were captivating, boredom set in shortly thereafter. The majority of the book is set in the eyes of the mother, her account of her childhood and also adult life after returning to her native Sweden. She tells of scandal and her husband's attempts to commit her to a psychiatric ward. Long story short though, the book lacked purpose, as little happens until the last chapter. Plot development is beyond slow... I would not recommend this book to others.

Sadly, Super Boring

What disappointed you about The Farm?

A lot disappointed me about The Farm. I did not care for the boring mom's endless, punishing recounting of her tale. I was staggered each time she repeated a mind-numbing detail, or produced a new, uninteresting storytelling device... A couple times I wondered if the author was deliberately trying to be boring. The Child 44 series was so outstanding, that I still love this author. But, please, TRS, no more like this one.

Bring on the Crazy...

I made it to the end, is about all I can say. Thanks to a recommendation from a source I can usually trust, (Books on the Nightstand) I tried this book. There are a lot of twists and turns, all of which are incredibly predictable. And there is no subtext - everything is text. In case you miss some of the subtext, the author restates it on several occasions.

The readers capture the earnestness of the prose with breathless pronouncements. It's not their fault - the author wrote it this way. I kept thinking to myself, "Is she really that crazy?" , "Is he really that gullible"? Yes, yes they are.

I won't spoil it for you...though it's really hard to spoil. You'll see the ending coming a mile away.

Clever narration, unusual story

After hearing about this audio book on the Books on the Nightstand podcast and knowing that Smiths Child 44 books received high praise, I decided to check it out. First I have to talk about the two-person narration. Its really effective and I think thats because of the way it was done - its not a straightforward narration where each person has a set piece of the story, instead its interwoven together as mother and son have conversations.

Murphys Law: If anything can go wrong, it will, at the most inconvinent time.

That seems to be the theme of Mega: Deep Sea Thriller. From the first page to nearly the last that is what happens.

Ex-SEAL, Darren Chambers, hoped he had his financial problems in hand. OOPS, the bank repos his ship and leaves him and his crew high and dry.

Here comes Mr. Balentine, corporate money man with his own agenda, and his bodyguard Darby(female ex-Mosad).

Balentine hires Darren and his men to aid in the rescue of kidnapped sailors from Somali pirates. Then they would search for the monster whale that Darren has been looking for. He even makes Darren the captain of his new, larger, research ship named Beowolf II. Which BTW also has all the equipment and files from Darrens old ship. (Dont ask what happened to Beowolf I)

Balentine has also hired a team of ex-Seals, named them his Team Grendel, to run the rescue operation. Yup, Murphys Law.

At least none of them got killed, this time

This book is so filled with corporate intrigue, backstabbing, lies, and bickering you might think you were in a session of Congress.

The banter among the crew and Seals is quite funny at times. I liked the twins best.

There are so many people to try to keep track of it is almost a relief when some of them are taken out.

Oh yes, there is a really big shark too and dont forget the really big whale that Darren is searching for, and when they find them, its action,adventure, blood, and terror.

This book has it all and it is also fun to read, in this case listen too. The narrator was fantastic. He really got into it bringing the characters to life. I like it so much I kept repeating parts. The production of the audio was flawless. Im going to get Bibles other books.

Love for Rick??

Trish Rocha is getting out of jail.

Trish and Rick have a relationship. Oh its was a letters and one visit a month relationship but hey, any port in a storm.

Trish comes to work for Rick and Lo. Hell. Trish moves into Ricks house and right on into his bed. Something Rick had no problem with.

Lo really likes Trish, a more than capable Trish, but warns her that if she hurts Rick, she's oh so dead. No problem. Trish is in love and would never hurt Rick. She also thinks Lo and Rick are the two most interesting fossils she's ever met.

Rick, much to his amazment finds himself loving Trish as well. This, of course, scares the hell out of Rick. He will just have to wait and see where it goes. Next book perhaps??

This was one rollercoaster of a ride.

We have FBI Agents, one who turns out to be a traitor, a drug cartel full of idiots and and old Mossad connection. A connection that almosts costs Rick his life.

Of course Lo was there to save the day. Those she was saving the day against didn't make it. Oh well. Hell hath no fury like a woman who's as good a shot as Lo is. A Lo who would kill anyone who threatened Rick.

This one is full of friends, enemies, drug cartel killers, old aquaintences and Rick and Lo in a fight for their lives.

We also get the FBI and Homeland Security finally catching a clue about some of the things Rick and Lo have been involved in. Oh cartel bodies all over the place may have had something do to with that.

The FBI and HS want to recruit a very untrusting Rick and Lo. A Rick and Lo who are taking out bad guys left and right and aren't concerned about the "rights" of those bad guys.

Rick and Lo also know just how far they can trust any Govt agency.

Of course you know who the winners are. Five Stars and then some. Rick, Lo and the gang rock big time. Hoping for number three before long..

RICK CANTELLI, P.I. (Book II) Deadly Liasons

Bernard Lee DeLeo does it again. This second installment in the Rick Cantelli, P.I. series is just awesome. I love as always the ways that he writes his character's interactions, and I think adding Trish to the mix was just the cherry on top of an already wonderful group of people. The quips and one liners never seemed to stop, and the action kept the story moving at a fast pace that never seemed to want to let you take a breath.

This series has been my favorite. This is number 11 of 12 and is fantastic just like the previous ones. Great story and suspense!
