    Title: Deadly Descendant
    Subtitle: Nikki Glass, Book 2
    Author: Jenna Black
    Narrator: Sophie Eastlake
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 34 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-21-12
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 260 votes
Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fantasy: Paranormal
    Publisher's Summary:
As a living descendant of Artemis the Huntress, private investigator Nikki Glass knows how to track someone down. But when an Oracle shows up, warning the Descendants about wild dog attacks in Washington, D.C., Nikki is afraid it might be a trap. The Olympians believe the "dogs" are really jackals, controlled by a blood-crazed descendant of the Egyptian death-god Anubis.
Whatever. If Nikki hopes to muzzle Dogboy, she's got to catch him in the act. But when she stakes out a local cemetery, she ends up face-to-snout with a snarling pack of shadow-jackals whose bite is worse than their bark. These hellhounds are deadly - even for an immortal like Nikki. "Dog" spelled backward may be "god", but that won't stop Nikki from teaching these old gods some new tricks. Like playing dead.

    LOVED IT!
    Loved It!
The second book is is as good as the first. This one gets deeper into the characters pasts and their specific powers. Nikki is a Private Investigator. She is smart, headstrong and daring. She also has a good heart. She has the power of the hunt and learns that she can find people in an unusual way. She is also very good with all weapons.
I also love Anderson's and Jamal's characters. Very cool powers!
The narrator does very wonderful job with all the character's voices. Her voice is clear and is easy to listen to.
This is such a good series! I can't wait for the 3rd book!!
    Fantastic new series
This is a fantastic new series, and *SPOILER ALERT* I can't wait to see what happens between Nikki and Jamal. Yum.
    Great Second Book
I was very please with this book. The author has continues the story she started in the first book and there is not drop off as there are so many times with an authors second book. Ms. Black continues with another great story line and plenty of twists to keep you interested and Ms. Eastlake continues to do a great job of narrating. I eagerly await the next in this series. I have made this series one of my top 3 to keep an eye out for the next book in the series.
    Decent
Yeah, pretty good follow up. Not quite as strong as the first, but still good. I get a little annoyed when we have to listen to too much whiny internal turmoil that is OBVIOUS to the reader how it will turn out. I can't say too much about it because it's at the end of the book. But I found myself doing a LOT of eye rolls at her inner dialogue, choices and hopes that someone will save her. It was just weird. That aside, I enjoyed the book, plot and characters and will give the next book a chance.
    A Refreshing Urban Fantasy Novel
    Any additional comments?
Unlike most other novels and series in this genre, Jenna Black's series about Nikki Glass is a breath of fresh air. There is no romance at all in the first book, and the romance in Deadly Descendant, the second installment, is developing at a snail's pace. For some reason, this makes me all the more eager to find out where things go in book three. The concept of the series also veers away from the genre's status quo. Descendants of gods, who can steal immortality from other descendants by killing them, leaves Black's main characters teetering between good and evil.

Gay crushes, ghosts, vampires and tv shows.
Tony Foster has been a lot of things in his short life: a street kid, a hustler, addict, a police informant, a vampire's lover. Now he's got his life sort of together, and is chasing his dream of a career in television, working as a P.A. on a show about a vampire detective.
But Tony is also a wizard, if a rather reluctant and untrained one, and weird things keep happening to him. This time, the house that the show is filming in turns out to actually be haunted, in the classic 'no one can get out till morning' style.
Huff plays with the tropes, the stereotypes and the over-used plots with a heavy dose of humor, but also offers characters you can care about and root for.
    Really fun
Narrator did better on this one than the first in the series. It was a fun story. Nice to have Tony starting in his own series, as he was one of my fav characters from the other series. All the romance is intriguing. Poor Tony, everybody wants a bite. XD

    Not deep
This story was a bit corny in places, but was fun to listen too. It does keep you on your toes wondering what's going to happen next. The reader was easy to listen to and I didn't get lost once.
A Roller Coaster Ride of a Story!!
Would you listen to The Thirteenth Sacrifice again? Why?
I'm not one to listen to books over and over again that I have already listened to unless they are short and one of my favorites. If a good amount of time had passed then, I would listen to this book again because it is very well-written.
What about Abby Cradens performance did you like?
I think Abby did an excellent job of narrating the story! You felt like you were a fly on the wall watching everything happen. I mean she did a great job of making you feel like you were actually there. She displays emotion through her voice well and she does a good job separating characters by giving them different sounding voices.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I was outraged at the end of the book by how Samantha was treated! I thought that she had really sacrificed herself throughout the book for the good of everyone and the least people could do was to show her the respect that she deserved!
    Any additional comments?
This is a really good book to read. If you are into witches then you will love this book! It's about a girl named Samantha Ryan, who is a cop with a dark past. She lives in the Boston area around Salem. All of a sudden, girls start coming up murdered with what looks like sacrificial markings. It is up to Samantha to go undercover to stop the witches that are behind this before it is too late.
Excellent book. Kept my interest peaked.
What made the experience of listening to The Thirteenth Sacrifice the most enjoyable?
    The story line and characters
What did you like best about this story?
That the witch had to hide herself to survive. But in the end she had to let everthing out.
    Which scene was your favorite?
    Too many to list.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    yes
One of the worst books EVER!
Rarely do I just not finish a book; however, this one is one of those rare books. The narrator was hideous, the story unbelievable and the dialog vapid. Don't waste your time or credit here...just move along.
Never Seemed to Pull Me In...
Is there anything you would change about this book?
This isn't a horrible book, its just not very engaging
What three words best describe Abby Cradens voice?
Her voice is a little flat in parts, so its hard to follow the story.
Did The Thirteenth Sacrifice inspire you to do anything?
    Not buy the next book.

Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fantasy: Paranormal
    Publisher's Summary:
For 15 years Maria Devane has been desperately, passionately in love with Dante Romano. But despite loving him with all of her heart and soul, Maria knows that Dante can never give all of himself back - at least not all the time. Every month, Dante shifts shape, becoming a wild animal. During those times, he wanders far and wide, leaving Maria alone. He can't choose when he shifts; the transition is often abrupt and, as he gets older, the time he spends in human form is gradually decreasing. But Maria, who loves him without hesitation, wouldn't trade their unusual relationship for anything.
Since the beginning, she has kept his secret, knowing that their love is worth the danger. But when a string of brutal attacks occur in local parks during the times when Dante is in animal form, Maria is forced to consider whether the lies she's been telling about her life have turned into lies she's telling herself.
    Critic Reviews:
"[Shinn] is one of the best fantasists." (Alternative Worlds)
    Members Reviews:
More mature content than her previous works
I think of Sharon Shinn's previous works as Young Adult material. This book has explicit sexual content, which was a surprising change. Also, the main character is deeply rooted in reality, although some characters have fantasy charcteristics. So I wasn't swept away in fantasy, as I was initially hoping, since the Mystic and Ryder series is so much fun.
However, this book is an interesting character story of what goes on behind the scenes when a person is living a life acceptable in "polite company". Fascinating and inciteful, and applicable to the real world in many ways.
Another admirable book by Sharon Shinn
Behind the scenes of loving a shapeshifter
As you can guess from the summary, this is unabashedly a love story. Maria has spent the last fifteen years turning herself into the perfect foil for her shapeshifter boyfriend. She covers for him, protects his secrets, and eagerly looks forward to each moment hes able to retain human form. But as the book opens, shes starting to want more in her life, and unsettling things are happening to make her take a closer look at whats going on around her.
Marias an interesting character, which is a good thing because we are very much inside her head throughout the book. Shes insightful, thoughtful, and honest with herself about the places her views arent perfectly black and white. The pace is relaxed and leisurely, so the book was easy to put down and pick back up again. At least, that was true up until the last few hours. Then things picked up and I didnt want to stop listening.
This reads like a stand-alone novel and comes to a full conclusion, enough so that I was surprised to find out theres a second related book due out in the fall of 2012. From the synopsis, the second book will probably follow new characters and some minor characters from this one. There was one place in this book where I wasnt able to fully suspend my disbelief, and it sounds like that may be addressed in the next book. So much for my one complaint!
The narrator was very good. I thought she caught the regional inflections well, and she did a great job with voices.
Overall, I enjoyed this! Its a nicely read, well-written paranormal love story, which is just what I would expect from this author.

    Another Great Christine Warren Read
I really wish that she would go into the realm of the werelions more often. It is a nice departure from all of the other werewolf and vampire books out there. Warren always writes a story that you don't want to stop listening to (or reading) and Kate Reading is one of the best as far as narration goes. I've yet to come across one of the series that I didn't like, and am purchasing #10 today.
    Different venue and very good!
    hate-crimes, veterinarian, shifters, law-enforcement, suspense
I've read several of the books in this series, and this one definitely stands alone. The sheriff (a lion shifter) brings a badly wounded Lupine to the town veterinarian, and then the fur begins to fly. The problems escalate as does the suspense. It's a wild ride to the end!
    way too slow
Would you try another book from Christine Warren and/or Kate Reading?
I jumped from Drive me Wild to this one. Drive me wild very good, but too short.
This still has humor, but just did not do it for me. I purchased as it was a paranoramal Lion shifter. Not much of this lion at all. review was a good teaser, but did not deliver.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
make it a bit faster pace
What aspect of Kate Readings performance would you have changed?
    she is pretty good
    Any additional comments?
I do not think I will try any more. Either too short or long and boring. Maybe a better editor.
the author has the humor and just needs a rewrite on her outlines
    Author and Narrator
I love this book. The one two punch of an excellent writer with an excellent narrator cannot be under estimated. That always keeps me coming back for more!

    Publisher's Summary:
One woman's story as she blogs about - and fights back against - the zombie apocalypse.
Allison Hewitt and her five colleagues at the Brooks and Peabody Bookstore are trapped together when the zombie outbreak hits. Allison reaches out for help through her blog, writing on her laptop and utilizing the military's emergency wireless network (SNET). It may also be her only chance to reach her mother. But as the reality of their situation sinks in, Allison's blog becomes a harrowing account of her edge-of-the-seat adventures (with some witty sarcasm thrown in) as she and her companions fight their way through ravenous zombies and sometimes even more dangerous humans.
Narrated by Piper Goodeve and a full cast.
    Critic Reviews:
"Madeline Roux manages to answer the eternal question all of us must ask ourselves eventually: 'When the zombie apocalypse comes (and it will come), how will I handle it?' For my part, I hope I manage it with as much humanity and determination as Allison. But I would like to make a request for bigger weapons." (Christine Warren, New York Times best-selling author of The Others series)
    Members Reviews:
Proof: useful female zom apoc survivors exist
Overall, it is an above average zombie novel with decent writing and decent characterizations. The flow of the story was off a bit though - it felt like 3 vignettes woven together, and not all parts were equally sensible. Part 1 was Allison trapped in a store where people behaved pretty much as you would expect. Part 2 was Allison in a re-purposed FEMA camp which, for 3/4 of the section was reasonable behavior, but then, last 1/4 stuff happened that made no sense and was based on some strange stereotype around religious women. Part 3 was a 'road trip' segment which felt the most rushed (i.e. Allison did a lot of stuff in part 3 while parts 1 & 2 she kinda just sat around on her bottom and ordered people around).
The weakest part was the 'romantic' component... I had thought I heard that Collin was in his 50s, but when Allison took up with him, I figured I must have mis-heard it. This whole relationship is glossed over, however - other than a couple mentions that they shared a tent, there was not much contact/mush between them. Until she leaves, which was... weird, because all of a sudden the relationship which was pretty understated to this point became front and center to her motivation to leave, on her own, in a zombie infested world. Then the next 1/4 of the book focuses on her pining over him. I want to emphasize... 1/4 of book spent pining over some old married guy she had just met.
It is wrapped up okay - and the female characters were competent and real and not there as man-prizes, so that is a big shift in zombie fiction. And I did kinda like Allison... I just thought the actual storyline was a bit choppy, and the romantic component was contrived. I also quite liked the blogging component which allowed for little glimpses into how the apocalypse was affecting people outside of Allison's sphere.
I will certainly read more by this author - if only because these female characters are not merely vaginas. The narration is very good.

    Members Reviews:
    Hard to listen to...
There's not much to like about this main character. She is immature and, at many points, dumb beyond belief. The continuous internal monologues are very repetitious and formulaic. I found myself rolling my eyes every five minutes. The author's voice is great for the female characters, but terrible for everyone else, fawn included. There were some funny and thoughtful moments, but not enough to warrant even a middle rating.
    Don't Stop After Chapter 1
Let me warn that you must either resolve to listen to the whole book or not bother to start it. You will hate the main character in chapter one...and two...and probably a little longer. That's ok. Do you really like Luke Skywalker when he complains to his aunt and uncle? No. He's whiny and cocky at the same time. Of course, this isn't Star Wars or anything close, but it is a coming of age/father quest story. You must wait for the character to come of age before you decide whether or not you like the character.
The storyline is strong. It builds the way a story should, and the characters are consistent. Plenty of action is had as Calli sets out to help her family and find her dad. Why did I give it three stars? Because it is missing something. It is possible that I was just not in the right mood for it, but I failed to fall in love with the characters and plot the way that a reader/listener should. I cannot put my finger on why I was not madly in love with the story. The end was worth the read, I enjoyed the character's journey from chic lit to real woman, and the adventure was certainly well played. I will probably read another book in this series. I don't feel the burning desire to get the next one right away, though.
In addition to my not feeling terribly attached to it, Amber Benson's performance of it was not what I was expecting. Knowing that she is both the author and an experienced actress, I thought that it would be magical. I held my expectations too high for even an average narrator, I think. She seems rushed from the beginning. As a teacher, I have heard plenty of middle schoolers who are embarrassed to be reading their own writing. This is almost how the narrator sounds. She does distinguish between voices, but they are often very similar and distracted me a bit from the story. I did get used to it so that I could finish the story, but at no point was I convinced that the narration improved the book, like some narrators, do.
All in all, I am not sorry that I read it. It will be a while before I continue the series, though. I do recommend, however, that if it sounds appealing to you, vow to listen to the whole thing.

TOO MUCH OF THE SAME PROBLEM,
I am giving up on this series. I was a bit disappointed that things are just getting nowhere. The other wardens are not realty helping Joanne and David. Even Lewis is not much help. Should have come to a conclusion much earlier,
    Paranormal to the Extreme
I have to admit that I read all of the books in this series. Avidly. But of all the stories, the one I liked the best was "Thin Air" when Joanne Baldwin loses her memory. Ultimately these books are over the top. Baldwin has super powers although she is human, but she interacts with Djinn and demons, and they also have superpowers. The best part of these stories is the conflicted nature of our heroine. She is the ultimate good guy--er gal. She's the best and most powerful of the Wardens, although she says Lewis is stronger. But being the best means being hunted and taunted by darker forces--demons. Her whole story centers around her unfortunate ingestion of a demon at the hands of one of her fellow wardens. From there, the story devolves from one book to the next as she tries to get out of her sticky trap existence. Book 8 is really out there as we near the conclusion. Possessed by a demon she is trying to remove, she all but kills her team and friends.
    You got it girl!!!
Everywhere Joann goes there are weather problems. She is funny resourceful and always horny for David. I enjoy see her get into trouble through her altruistic endowers. I am waiting for David to tell her that if you let me kill him in book one he would not be a problem now! But??? I don???t think that would matter, since dead does not necessary mean dead. Fast cars, weather hair, great shoes, and lots of attitude makes this series a fun read.
this series "was good" until now!
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
up until this installment in the series I would have said yes. now I am thinking no. unless the ending of total eclipse finds a way to redeem everything that this one messed up.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
a large dose of Disappointment was how I reacted to the ending of this book, I will be taking a while to move on the the next book in this series which I think is the final book and conclusion, total eclipse. but what is started must be finished.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Dina Pearlman?
sure, the voice wasn't a problem
Was Cape Storm worth the listening time?
I thought this book was actually a waste of time due to the story line and the twist that I did not like and cannot spoil with one of the MC'S.

    Excellent Series
This books are a refreshing departure from most of the Urban Fantasy out there. The weather is a character causing its own plot turns. Joanne, the main character has the worst luck in the universe, no matter how much she tries to help and do the right thing, bad karma follows her around. The writing is witty and fun even in the midst of unbelievable danger and tragic endings. One thing is for certain if you read this series you will never look at weather the same way again!

    In-between
This is my least favorite of the series- but if you combine it and listen to the fourth book right after- the two combine and make magic. I'm also really pleased with the ending- and the setup for the fifth book.
