    Critic Reviews:
"Elrod s got it down. A blend of the hard-boiled detective novel and the vampire tale...good-natured fun." (Locus)
    Members Reviews:
Not as good as the first, but still pretty good
The title says it all. The novel is good and entertaining but just lacks a bit of the grittiness of the first novel. We do get to learn more about the main character and some of the past of the woman who made him a vampire. This one is a lot less dark and a lot more predictable than the previous book, hence the lower rating .
You could read this one as a stand alone but it will be more enjoyable if read following the first novel. Once again, the main character is pretty much the only supernatural element of the story. That's not a bad thing, just how it is. The main character does come off a bit more sappy and weak than in the first one but still makes a good main character. I hope the author toughens him up a bit in later stories.
Alll in all, it is still a very good book and definitely worth a listen. Just be aware there are about 12 novels in this series so if you get hooked you may be buying a lot of books. ;)
    Awesome detective story
I love vampires and I love suspense, P N Elrod does a wonderful job of combining both. Terrific book and I can't wait until you get more of the Vampire Files on the site.
    vampire's and mystery's
A good story that brings together classical elements such love,Los, mystery, and vampires to create memorable characters and a interesting concept
    Awesome!
I liked the story and how the author takes you to the time period. The reader also puts you in Jack's shoes which I love! Makes me want more!
    Left me wanting more...
    Any additional comments?
I've wanted to get into P. N. Elrod for awhile since she has been involved with the same various collections of short stories that one of my favorite authors (Jim Butcher!!) contributes to as well. I'm very glad I took the chance and gave this series a listen! Think old style black and white private investigator with a supernatural twist. I don't want to spoil any of the story line but I was so taken in by the main character and his very human side kick that the ending left me hooked NEEDING to find out what happens next. The series continues by another narrator but is just as good. I do wish the books were longer (each is only 6-7 hours in length) but so far well worth the credit.

    Any additional comments?
Great narration. I like to list this first as it can make or break a story.
Loved this story. Easy listerning and very entertaining. Will be impatiently waiting for any new books in audio from this author.
I really enjoy it when readers with similar reading interests list their favourite authors and series. It really helps me find new authors too follow. Mine are Charlaine Harris, Jeaniene Frost, Jennifer Estep, Faith Hunter, Molly Harper, Ilona Andrews, Kresley Cole, Deborah Harkness, Nalini Singh, Coreene Callahan and Sherrilyn Kenyon.
    Happy Reading
    Awesome reading
This series is my favorite of my books. It keeps you wanting more and more. A definite must read for all Vampire fans. Just excellent and the Narrator is excellent.
    Fangtastic!!!
The novels are always so hilarious. I find myself laughing out loud so many times (the HBO series is darker and more thrilling). Charlaine Harris and the narrator Johanna Parker make a dynamic duo that will keep you listening and wanting more.
    Addicting!
I've never gone through audio books faster than this series. I'm so happy there are still 7 more to go!
    Got annoyed
Would you try another book from Charlaine Harris and/or Johanna Parker?
No, no more books by Charlaine Harris.
What could Charlaine Harris have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
She could have made Sookie a more independent, strong, feminist woman who has actual friends and a life other than the one surrounding the troubles she has with the abusive men in her life. She is more independent in the TV version, she has a best friend who stands by her. Here she is just a curious plaything. Also, why kill off the obligatory stereotype of a black gay guy? In the TV show his life is more well-roundedly portrayed with a boyfriend and troubles of his own - here he is just a sidekick to be cut for dramatic effect. Ever heard of the Bechdel Test for movies, meaning that you check whether the movie has 1. at least two women in it 2. who have speaking roles 3. talking about something other than a man? And this test does not tell whether the movie is good or feminist, it just tests whether it has any well-rounded portrayals of women in it. Well, this book is told from the point of view of a women but still I don't think it would pass that test! And we're talking about a book here, an 8,5 hour listen, and still there's no real talk (let alone conversations) or between women about something other than a man! I don't think there's ever even any thinking/narration contemplating something other than a man.

    Release date: 02-16-09
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 402 votes
Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fantasy: Paranormal
    Publisher's Summary:
Sorcerer Marla Mason, small-time guardian of the city of Felport, has a big problem. A rival is preparing a powerful spell that could end Marla's life - and, even worse, wreck her city. Marla's only chance of survival is to boost her powers with the Cornerstone, a magical artifact hidden somewhere in San Francisco. But when she arrives there, Marla finds that the quest isn't going to be quite as cut-and-dried as she expected...and that some of the people she needs to talk to are dead.
It seems that San Francisco's top sorcerers are having troubles of their own - a mysterious assailant has the city's magical community in a panic, and the local talent is being (gruesomely) picked off one by one. With her partner-in-crime, Rondeau, Marla is soon racing against time through San Francisco's alien streets, dodging poisonous frogs, murderous hummingbirds, cannibals, and a nasty vibe from the local witchery, who suspect that Marla herself may be behind the recent murders. And if Marla doesn't figure out who is killing the city's finest in time, she'll be in danger of becoming a magical statistic herself.

    The Title Explains It All
I usually do not write reviews, but I just thought I'd give it a shot this time. The book is a great read/listen. I listened at work and found it entertaining, made the day flow by quicker. Some audio books can take a while for me to understand where the story is going, this one I picked up what was happening right away. The reason for writing this review is that enjoyed the book and wanted to see which is the next in the series. It took a little investigating because they are not numbered, so I went to T.A. Pratt's site. The order goes as follows.
    In Blood Engines
    In Poison Sleep
    In Dead Reign
    In Spell Games
I hope that helps some people who enjoyed the first book and would like to follow the series, and not make the mistake of downloading the books not in series sequence.
    Imaginative and action-packed
A very pleasant discovery, this novel has a fairly basic plot -- mostly just the main character and her sidekick chasing all over San Francisco looking for a magical object and a mad sorcerer. However, the magic -- attacks by frogs and hummingbirds, oracles in sewers, a goddess of possibilities -- are original and beautifully imagined. The heroine is very ruthless, not your typical goody-two-shoes that people find "sympathetic," and perhaps the author hits that note a few times too many, but I found it refreshing. I'll be checking out the sequel.
    Wow!
This is a great book! The universe this author has created is varied, interesting and dangerous, and so are the characters. While some of the topics referred to are perhaps not appropriate for children, my teenager (who usually sneers at my audio books or asks if I can turn them off) was so hooked by this book he'd ask me to pause it when he left the room, and bugged me about looking for possible sequels.
    Great fun!
This is excellent story packed with wit and character. Ms. Almasy's narration is spirited and fits the story and characters well.
    Highly recommended.
    not bad
Not bad. Good enough to listen to series! Narration ok.

    Buffy redux?
I almost put this one back on the shelf after the first hour, but gradually it became more entertaining, and I stuck with it. The world of the series and the vocal style of the narrator were both reminiscent of Buffy, and while I am not a big fan, I assume that will be an attraction for many listeners. For me the best aspect of this book was the creation of some appealing and delightful characters. Unfortunately, for most of the book, their choices are predictable and uninspired, and the "deeper" aspects of moral conflict are disappointingly obvious. Still, by the end I was enjoying them and did not regret sticking with the book.
WARNING. If you have not read the earlier titles in this series do NOT start with this book. It is full of spoilers about important plot turns from earlier episodes.
So much fun I'd buy the series twice!
I envy anyone who will discover Marla Mason and her world. I got halfway through the first book and I was hooked! Funny and fabulous with a wacky cast of characters, T. A. Pratt's series is pure delight. Please bring us book 5 soon! A totally unique listening experience -- and one of the best narrators out there! Thank's T.A. for great entertainment!
    Marla Mason Goes to Hell
If you're looking for a breezy, punch-a-monster-in-the-face urban fantasy, step right up to the Marla Mason series and "Dead Reign."
This time out, Marla has to go head-to-head with Death. This creates all kinds of problems for her (naturally!) and one of the great pleasures of this outing is that Marla really gets pushed out of her comfort zone, both figuratively and literally. (And...into hell.) It's also feels like the most ensemble pieces of the story this far out. Rondeau, in particular, really gets to step into the limelight, and it's a lot of fun to watch.
Jessica Almasy's reading is such a blast. Her reading of the characters is superb and consistent, and her delivery can be both nail-biting and laugh out loud hysterical. Her mummified zombie John Wilkes Booth is a nice spin on Southern Charm, Rondeau is tough yet heartbreaking, and - as usual - she's pitch perfect as Marla.

    Editorial Reviews:
"When I was eight, my mother lost me to zombies in a one-card draw." So begins the gripping urban fantasy The Iron Hunt - a modern gothic legend of complicated demon hunter Maxine Kiss, whos also a demon herself, and an all-out warrior with some serious kicking butt skills to boot.
Protected by day from all physical harm by her magical tattoos, at night these same tattoos fantastically morph into five fiercely loyal demon protectors, raising hell for Maxines many enemies, both alive and undead.
Marguerite Gavin, a storytelling veteran who has performed over three-hundred audiobooks, narrates this title in lively fashion with a few winks to the listener.

No vampires or werewolves for a change.
I picked this book only because I loved Marjorie M. Liu's Crimson City novel. Other than the Crimson City book, I knew nothing about Liu's work. Well, I'm very glad I gave The Iron Hunt a listen. Liu, unlike a lot of the women currently dominating the fantasy genre actually created a paranormal heroine that wasn't a vampire or a werewolf. I have no idea how that happened, since it seems like vampires and werewolves are almost all that gets published anymore in the paranormal genre.
Liu's heroine has tattoos of demons on her body that come to life and fight for her as well as protect her so that she can do her job as a hunter and executioner of demons that have escaped an extra-dimentional jail. Of course, these abilities comes with a price that will eventually have to be paid when she has a daughter.
There are a lot of interesting characters and things in Liu's novel, which is obviously the start of another paranormal series starring another tough, hard case, smart mouthed, female. While that in and of itself isn't anything new, the rest of The Iron Hunt is refreshingly different. I look forward to the next book.
LOVE this author and this series!
If you could sum up The Iron Hunt in three words, what would they be?
    Chick Kicks Butt!
What other book might you compare The Iron Hunt to and why?
Anthony Francis Dakota Frost series due to strong female leads and powerful tats -- although these are better -- go Demons!
What does Marguerite Gavin bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Gavin always delivers! Love her voice and the personality she gives the characters.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

    Poor audio
The premise of this book is interesting, however the recording is abysmal. It sounds like the reader used a voice activated mike to record it. There is noticeable background noise while his voice is audible then during a mid-sentence pause the mike shuts off and there is an eerie silence followed by his voice and noise resuming. This gives a staccato effect to his reading with sudden changes in pitch, volume, and cadence. I could only listen for an hour. I will buy the print edition of this book.
    Who edited this?
I have to agree. The recording transitions are indeed awful and distracting. I thought my mp3 player broke at first. Once I got over the readers transitions between reading sessions, the story picked up for me. I assume the big differences in voice tone is caused by going for a smoke outside in the dead of winter and then returning to work too quickly not allowing the cords to loosen up again. After making it through to the end, I realized that it wasn't. The last chapter is missing. There was too much answered to stretch to another book and too little left not to finish it. Even so it was fun getting there, even though ultimately disappointing at the abrupt ending.
    Bad Narration
I read some of the reviews before downloading this book and I have to ask if they listened to the same thing I did. The story is probably good, but the narrator is one of the worse I've heard. He seems to ramble at times (the voices are a joke) and doesn't use the concept of a pause to move from one scene to the next, but instead pauses in mid sentence when it isn't necessary. I've put this down twice but am determined to finish it since I paid for it. Don't publishers of audio books listen to the product before releasing it? Not in this case.
    Good story; terrible recording
The most important part: the story is very good. There've been dozens of books based on the idea of magic somehow re-emerging into our modern world. This one is a very creative, very interesting take. It's very well done - it actually considers how things like transportation, food supplies, and economics would be affected. But it doesn't focus on those things - they're just part of the background - but as a part of the background, they help drive the story, and make it feel much more real.
The story itself is fun. It's got interesting, engaging characters, with multiple plot threads that intersect in believable ways.
But on the downside, the recording is the worst I've ever heard. It sounds as if random sentence fragments were recorded at different times, and then re-assembled.

    Quite enjoyable, but...
This book was very interesting in the concept for the story. The only problem with it was that it is actually the middle book in a trilogy (which is not made clear anywhere) so the story seems to start in the middle of something, and doesn't come to a solid conclusion since the story continues beyond this book. Plus there are references to things that happened in the first book all through this one, and it made me wonder what had happened in the first book that I had missed. I would recomend getting ahold of the first book before listening to this one.
    Valeron
This was an excellent audio book. The script was well written and the narration was excellent. The story is very catching (about 15 hours worth, I finished it in under three days)and doesn't let you stop listening. Only downfall is that it is the SECOND story in the trilogy. Hopefully audible.com will obtain the first and final books. I am very much looking forward to hearing them.
    Interesting universe!
This is an interesting universe that the authors have created. I didn't know that it was the second in series. You really don't have to read the first one to understand it. The story have 4 very different main characters who are definitely a team (I guess the first book describes how they came together), a seemingly impossible quest with a long journey thorough a very changed world. I like the character development and the adventures that they encounter along the way.
I dislike the change of point of view that occurs virtually every chapter. I feel that this gives an artifical and disjointed story. To me, this is a poor writing technique: why is it necessary to change point of view with every chapter? However, the authors do state who is telling the story with each chapter; and, the reader does such an excellent job of distinctive accents that it does work very well in this audio book.
I am disappointed that Audible doesn't have the first book. I guess I will have to find a copy at the bookstore...
    Disappointing Sequel
I got this after liking the first "Magic Time" book, but I haven't been able to finish it.
The narrators are intrusively melodramatic, and every situation is just a little bit too cliched, too Holywood, to allow me to suspend disbelief.
    Mixed feelings
Although the storyline was interesting and had a couple of good twists, this was definitely not a "feel-good" book.
I'm not sure if I like the various jumps between characters viewpoints. I sometimes had to pause and think "Ok, who is speaking right now?"
I'll admit that I haven't listened to the last volume of the trilogy yet, but the second book left me a bit disappointed.

    Awful Narrator
What did you like best about Generation 18? What did you like least?
    The storyline/mystery is interesting
How could the performance have been better?
The author talks in a monotone the majority of the time. When she does decide to do accents, they're complete off and horrible. I'm fairly certain she means to do Australian accents and they come across British or Scottish. AWFUL.
Do you think Generation 18 needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
    Yes, it ends completely abruptly.
Story is great - the narrator is terrible
What did you love best about Generation 18?
It's a good read and keeps you wondering "who dun it" all the way through.
What did you like best about this story?
    It's a good story line.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Very monotone, hum-drum and she doesn't really differentiate her voice for the different characters. I almost wanted to return the book because her voice just drones on and on.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
    No.
    Any additional comments?
I will never buy another audio book with Molly Elston as narrator. I love Keri Arthur's books, but she needs better narrator's.

    Good Ole' fashion Werewolf Story
I loved this story. The story was set in Paris around the year of 1450.
There were no sexy werewolves trying to climb into bed with any humans to seduce them.
These werewolves are of the Devil, and this story runs true to how people believed in the 1450's. They are evil and have human cunning. Actually, kinda like the Catholic Church and it's clergy of that time. Which actually makes for a great story, as the normal lay person is caught in a world of how to be clever enough to defeat the werewolves, without having the church condemn you as a Witch, or Satan worshiper.
So, yes we have all read the old stories of the werewolf, but again this was a great story, and I truly enjoyed my listen.
    The wolves of Paris
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Even if you are not a fan of wolves and monsters, which I am not, this is a must audiobook The Wolves of Paris is not a typical werewolf versus hero tale. It is written with class, and giving life to colorful characters with true to life emotions, behavior, situations and traditions. The narrator added to the different emotions.
1450 Paris Love, Smallpox, and Werwolves
Michael Wallace's new book takes place in 1450 Paris. Where the Inquisition is still burning people at the stake and conducting other torturous acts. But as always people always seek out power. For one man and his friends the ability to shape shift from man to wolf and back is irresistible. Even if it damns their souls to hell.
Unfortunately an Italian Merchant and his brother along with a beautiful Widow of a French Duke stumble upon their plan and must fight for God, Love, and Life itself against this ungodly pack of demon dogs.
The local clergy calling out the unholy think our Hero's are themselves heretics and wish to round them up and punish them. The battle between Good, Evil, and Uneducated Ignorance is as much a part of this epic tale as the Wolves themselves.
This audiobook is Narrated by Rosemary Benson. She is by far the best narrator of French based stories in the business. Her accents and use of tone and space as she performs brings every audiobook to life. She is one of my favorite audiobook artists. I listened to this book because of her and was pleased that I did. Wall Street Journal's Best Selling Author Michael Wallace wrote the perfect prose to showcase Rosemary's Brilliance.
This is a great book to read by listening.
This book was a gift in return for an honest review.
    Really enjoyed it
    Any additional comments?
I was pleasantly surprised listening to this book. I listen to audio books as I travel for work, and there were several times I sat in my car outside a client's office for a few minutes to hear what happened next in the book. Very well written, and kept my attention throughout. Highly recommended.
Another great novel from Michael Wallace
The Wolves of Paris is a very engaging story.

    Really enjoyed
I voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.
I really enjoy the book series and will recommend it to anyone looking for a good book series
Short story, but no context in timeline
Sunny short story. Riding on train in what may or may not be Atlanta metro area. No clue when it takes place in timeline of series. Most of it is a physical fight, but with a little twist at the end. BUT its concise and doesnt have her fake belittling herself, which is refreshing. If shes so badass on supernaturals, has the confidence to take them on, then its inconsistent to belittle herself. Hope Ms Roman fazes that out if she plans to continue the series. Ive listened to books 2&3, also, and book 1 is on my get to list.
Ms Winder IS wonderfully consistent in her narration.
