Cute and Fluffy Maybe; But Not Too Bad
This is a cute little piece of literary fluff that is a nice listen if you don't take it too seriously or expect too much rationality. Casey Cook has a well done backstory as the black sheep of the family; currently living with her grandmother. Without money, a girlfriend, or a job her life doesn't seem to be in too good a place. When she is asked out by a girl she's been crushing on for too long she believes her luck is turning. Unfortunately for her the girl is ready to hookup not find a relationship and Casey is freaked by this and refuses and ends up left with the check for both their dinners. This is what happens when fifty year olds write first person millennial; I suppose that some young girls my age (22) might be horrified that a chic that she's all spun up about wants jump into bed, perhaps someone has even met them. There are of course some scenes that come off about as real to life as the X-files but all in all it's a nice little book and a decent listen for girls, (or guys) who are into lesbian fiction/ romance.
    A nice, fluffy mystery
    Any additional comments?
This book is not ment for mystery buffs since it doesn't have a lot of depth but it's nevertheless an enjoyable read. This book makes up the lack of depth with charm. The main character is interesting and I'd like to see what happens to her next.
    Cute story and easy listen.
A cute story about a detective who first case involved locating a missing person. The story is engaging and sweet. Dont read this expecting a complicated detective story or eroticism. Its a simple pleasant story about a woman starting out as a PI and working to solve a case. There is a developing romance between the detective and a woman her grandmother match makes her with, which ends with a kiss. I enjoyed the story, and it filled a number of hours pleasantly. I would say the story is is well suited for a younger or teen reader and is pleasant. If there where more stories from this author, narrator and in the same vain, I would be happy to purchase them and listen to them.
I enjoyed this nice little light-hearted romp.
This was a nice light-hearted romp into the land of PI Casey Cook and her first case. There is nothing taxing about the plot, although there are humorous moments sprinkled throughout the book. It reminded me of the Stephanie Plum novels in that respect although there are distinct differences.
I also liked the fact the the story wasn't padded out by unnecessary plot-lines. Some stories deserve to be longer, but some need to be kept a bit shorter to work. This was one of the works that didn't need to be stretched out beyond what it was.
Good job by the narrator as well, better than some out there. Plus the recording wasn't as poor as some have been.
Nothing here to tax the old grey matter, but if you want to wile away a few hours one long afternoon, then this should do the trick nicely.

    Publisher's Summary:
Felix Ketay, a 25-year-old Los Angeles dyke, has her foundations shaken when shes ditched by her pomosexual girlfriend and then gay-bashed on the streets of West Hollywood.
Felixs old-school lesbian aunt, Anna Lisa Hill, ran away from home in 1965 at age 19 and ended up in Lilac Mines, a small town in Californias Sierra Nevada foothills with a small but tight-knit butch/femme community.
When Felix joins her aunt in Lilac Mines hoping to discover a place of respite, Anna Lisa proves stand-offish, so Felix devotes herself to investigating the towns 100-year-old mystery: the disappearance of 16-year-old Lilac Ambrose in the mine shafts that run beneath the mountain.
Felix learns that finding an authentic history is never easy, but Lilac Mines - with its abandoned mines, unknowable secrets, and the occasional quirky-cute thrift store employee - might not be such a bad place to try.
About the author: Cheryl Klein is a shameless Angeleno, quiet pescatarian, and shameful tabloid reader. She lives in Los Angeles where she is West Coast director of Poets & Writers, Inc.
    Critic Reviews:
Kleins characters are compelling, one and all. (San Diego Union-Tribune)
"A quirky, quickly paced story of a young woman ending a relationship with a young woman then developing a relationship with another young woman: herself. Kleins first book, The Commuters, was a fine debut. Second books arent necessarily as good. In this case, its better." (Noel Alumit, Frontiers)

    Flash Back
This unsatisfying tale is told in mostly flash backs as three generations of lesbian lovers is explored ,the story telling itself is poetic and beautiful at times ,and maybe that's enough to recommend this book .Good narration, good story of old values and young enthusiasm, the disappointing thing was that it ends with a wimpier not a bang.
A Little History, A Little Mystery, and Romance
Cheryl Klein's delicious novel about three generations of lesbian women in California combines a little history, a little mystery, and a little romance.
This book opens like a million before itsomebody gets dumped. Escaping a crushing breakup with her girlfriend and a sexual assault, Felix leaves L.A. to stay with her aunt in a small town called Lilac Mines.
From there, the narrative switches between the present day and the 1960s. There is a tension between Felix and her aunt. Will we find the clues in her aunts past to why she is treating Felix so gruffly?
I loved the small-town lesbian history and storiesI completely forgot that this book is fictionLilac Mines feels like such a real place.
    A 3.5 read...........
This was an interesting listen which kept me engaged through out a bank holiday weekend. I particularly liked the parallel stories in this book, one taking place way back in the past, one in the 1970's and the final 'story' a present day plot.
We are all shaped by the time we come from and the norms and mores of that time shape our choices, freedoms and ultimately the lives we lead. Particularly through the stories of an aunt and her niece we see how different their lives and choices have been, yet ultimately we are reminded that people are people and not so different after all.

    Editorial Reviews:
L.A. Theatre Works presents Geoffrey Nauffts Tony-nominated Next Fall. The production features members of the original Broadway cast in a very unusual romance in which Patrick Breen and Patrick Heusinger create drama, humor, and tension, starring as an "Odd Couple" divided by family, friends, religion, and spirituality, but yet still joined by their hearts. The New York Times review of the original production was generous in its praise of the two stars and described Natuffts work as "an intellectual stealth bomb", and "the kind of gently incisive, naturalistic play that rarely materializes anymore".

Annice, Pat, and Barby are best friends from Iowa, freshly arrived in booming 1950s Chicago to explore different paths toward independence, self - expression, and sexual freedom. From the hip-hang of a bohemian lifestyle to the sophisticated lure of romance with a handsome, wealthy, married boss to the happier security of a lesbian relationship, these three experience firsthand the dangers and limitations of womens economic -reliance on men.
Well-known lesbian pulp author Valerie Taylor skillfully paints a sociological portrait of the emotional and economic pitfalls of heterosexuality in 1950s America and then offers a defiantly subversive alternative. A classic pulp tale showcasing predatory beatnik men, drug hallucinations, and secret lesbian trysts, The Girls in 3-B approaches the theme of sex from the stiffened vantage point of 1950s psychology.

    Girls Tend To Grow Up
Would you listen to The Girls in 3-B again? Why?
The beginning starts with three young girls who move to the big bad city together from a smaller town. Each is different, and grow in different ways. The story lets you in of the three main characters personalities and their interaction between each other and other people. Because there is an assortment of characters, a second or third listen would probably show some things missed before, and/or the story is so adequately done that a second read would be enjoyable just for the pure enjoyment of listening to a well developed story written from another area. You can see where some things have changed, and some have not. The answer is yes, I would listen to this story again.
What other book might you compare The Girls in 3-B to and why?
Actually, this audiobook is a first of this type category for me in that there are three main characters who stories come from a different area.
Have you listened to any of Julie McKays other performances before? How does this one compare?
No, but she did an excellent job because there were so many characters in this story in which she had to give a different voice to. It was amazing to me that she pulled it off so well that you knew who was talking from the voice she assigned to each character.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I don't think that it was really a funny or tear-jerker type book, but I suppose there were some humorous moments. It was mostly a character driven book in that it let you in on the lives of the three girls, of whom were the main characters. It more or less showed how they came into their own to find out basically who they really were. There were a few moments where you might have wanted to be in the story, and strangle a few people for them. That was not so much a laughing or crying reaction, but I suppose it is a reaction of some sort.
    Any additional comments?
I enjoyed this book because there were so many facets in it. It was mostly character driven. At the end, it seems to sum up that three young naive girls from a small town and from a different area go to the big city to be all that they can be grow into themselves.
A Golden Peep into 1950s Lesbian Pulp
Valerie Taylor is a classic lesbian lit writer, from the golden age of lesbian pulp in the 1950s. She put the torrid, pre-Stonewall lesbian romance on the map, along with Ann Bannon and Tereska Torres.
The Girls in 3-B is a peek at what it was like for single women to live together during the 1950s.

Martha looked deeply into the other girls eyes for a very long time. "l love you, too," she said. Then hungrily they fed on each other's lips.
Martha grasped Mary Drews hand. "Love me, will you? Not just kisses. Not any more."

    Okay
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Not time well spent, but not poorly spent either.
Has The Evil Friendship turned you off from other books in this genre?
I don't care for true crime to begin with but this fictionalization of what I suppose was a real case was fine. The author tried to develop several characters adequately rather than writing a simple procedural or reconstruction.
What does Leslie Bellair bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Her reading is straight forward and she does not resort to cheap theatrics or silly performance gimmicks such as creating different arbitrary voices and accents for each character. She seems to emote the reading with a reasonable understanding of character and scene as opposed to keying it tritely to individual words outside of context.
Was The Evil Friendship worth the listening time?
I had to force myself stick to it... but it was not bad.
    Any additional comments?
This restrained style of reading is far superior to the amateur theatrics and one-person full-cast recordings that seem to be coming in vogue.

    Publisher's Summary:
The first in a new mystery series from the legendary author of The Man from C.A.M.P. and Longhorns, Victor J. Banis.
Straight cop, gay cop, and a woman who "isn't real". Tom and Stanley are on the trail of a drag queen serial killer, and along the way, they find themselves engaged in a more intimate pursuit, trying to resolve another mystery: their unexpected attraction to one another.
    Members Reviews:
Great start to a series ruined by narrator:(
I didn't mind that much that the narrator sounded like a 3-pack-a-day cowboy but that he didn't bother to change his pitch so that the two MCs sound different, was a big negative. This, because Stanley, the gay cop is, obviously, gentler, "as queer as a three-dollar bill" as Tom, the straight cop describes and the complete opposite of the gruff, surly Tom.
As if that weren't bad enough, several lines were omitted, in at least two places, entire paragraphs! Where my MLR Press ebook inserts "transgender", the audiobook omits it. Several times.
To top it all, somewhere in chapter 3, I could hear a dog barking in the background. I thought it was coming from my tv but it was the news - and on mute - so I listened carefully and it was from the audiobook. It had obviously been recorded in a private house - somehow I had the impression that Audible.com had soundproof rooms or at least as good as.
I got a refund for this one and checked out Book 2 (Deadly Wrong) just to see if I had to return that, too, but Guy Veryzer sounds like a much better narrator. We'll see. At these prices, I expect a professional job and because this is a wonderful series by Banis. It deserves better attention by Audible.
    Great Story, Lousy Reader
If you could sum up Deadly Nightshade in three words, what would they be?
Good detective story, no surprise characters so follow the clues to the end.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Roy Wells?
    Anyone!
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
    No
    Any additional comments?
Narrator smacks his lips and mispronounces words; very distracting.
    Drag Queens Anyone?
What did you love best about Deadly Nightshade?
The hits of humor. Found myself chuckling at the one liners.
    Which scene was your favorite?
When Stanley first met his homophobe partner, Tom.
    Any additional comments?
I had trouble listening to the narrator at first, but once I settled down and really gave him a try. Really enjoyed how he brought the characters to life.
    Interesting story, but "annoying" narration...
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
No. The basic story was interesting, but the tenor of the narrators voice made listening for over an hour "painful." The narrator sounded as if he was just reading." Attempts to use inflection or vary the sound of the characters seemed "forced." In my opinion -- at the risk of sounding ageist -- it was like listening to a grandfather reading a book at storytime. I could not envision in my mind the younger characters the reader was attempting to portray. After about an hour I had to abandon listening to the book. It is now on my "last resort" listening list.
Would you be willing to try another one of Roy Wellss performances?
    No.
The ending left me scratching my head.
    Any additional comments?
Spoiler alert: The book was funny, flowed well and the story was original.

Mabel Maney is a Comedic Genius
What made the experience of listening to A Ghost in the Closet the most enjoyable?
Mabel Maney is a true "rara avis" comedic genius who kept me laughing out loud. The performance was high camp. How does he manage to do all those voices?
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
The second wonderful part was that Mabel Maney transported me back to my seven year-old self. I felt all the excitment and suspense again.
Which character as performed by Mikael Naramore was your favorite?
That's a hard question, but Cherry Aimless was so guiless and campy she was my favorite.
If you could rename A Ghost in the Closet, what would you call it?
The Mystery of Father's Big Secret
    Any additional comments?
When are we getting more from Mabel Maney?
    deceitful
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
If it had been like the original character's. It was very deceitful and had nancy and cherry in love with each other. I will never get another one of them. It was a disgrace to the original characters and the authors would roll over in their graves if they knew it.
Would you ever listen to anything by Mabel Maney again?

    THE READER IS THE WORST
Would you try another book from Victor J. Banis and/or Lee Roberts?
I'll read it and see what I think, I won't ever buy another audible book read by Lee Roberts, he is the worst ever.
Has Longhorns turned you off from other books in this genre?
    No
How did the narrator detract from the book?
He is horrible, he made the characters sound like 4 year old girls. Whoever hired him to read should be fired.
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
I couldn't get through it the reader was so bad.
    Any additional comments?
    I want my credit back!!!!!!
    Completely okay
The story in itself was quite all right I think. My personal opinion is generally that I'm not too into romance books though, not when that's practically all the book is about. I normally like books that have some other plot going on and the romance is more like a side effect or possibly a just as big plot but running beside other happenings.
I did know this wasn't going to be a book with a lot of other things happening already before though so I didn't mind too much.
I did listen all the way through *smile* and grew more fond of the characters in time, even though they will never be even close to my favourite characters of other books.
I did enjoy the stpry most of the time.
The narrator though... took some getting used to. He didn't read the book in the same way at all that I would probably have done if I had read a printed version. Sometimes it felt a little bit rushed between two sentences. It was also clear each time there was a "break", he didn't read everything evenly enough to make breaks really smooth.
In the very beginning I had some troubles following because he has this... drawl? to his voice and since my native isn't english I sometimes have a harder time understanding when someone isn't talking clearly enough.
I got kind of used to it after some time though.
In the end I found it an okay listen. (:
    Horrible Narration
No sure how good this story is because the narration was so bad, I immediately stop listening as soon as it started.
