    bearly all there.
Would you consider the audio edition of Bear Like Me to be better than the print version?
have not read the print version
Would you recommend Bear Like Me to your friends? Why or why not?
no I would not, the main character peter is just not likable, his being over whelmed with the idea of revenge get's tiresome after a while.
What does Wes Smith bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
nothing that I can see, however the base of the story seems sound it's unfortunate that the main character was to someone we could root for.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I did enjoy the character of ben and a lot of the bears were fantastic
    Fun, furry, and clever.
I'm a fan of audiobooks and finding more and more titles from Lethe/Bear Bones and Bold Strokes has been a real joy to add some quality audiobooks to my two-plus hours of commute every day.
"Bear Like Me" works on many levels - on the surface, this is a fun and light story of a guy in way over his head: a gay clone twink type who is unjustly fired from his job at a magazine is left twisting in the wind, and his friend convinces him to go undercover into the bear community and write a book about the experience. Hijinks begin from the first confusion over "husbear" and then a second plot wrinkle enters: he has the opportunity to maybe do some sabotage to the magazine that let him go. Juggling identities, lies, sabotage and a romance that is starting with a burly bear makes life complicated, but the biggest struggle might just be realizing that the only thing better than pretending to be a bear might be actually being one.
On that fun mad-cap level alone, the story works. It's actually mildly a period piece as well, and keeping in mind the tale takes place as the internet age is dawning will also make some of the chuckles all the more amusing - I didn't get his absolute confusion about computers for a moment or two, until I realized that.
On a deeper level, though, there's more here. On his quest to investigate the bear identity, the hero also bumps into the same struggles I remember all too well from my brief foray into the bear world when I first came out: the community can be the most supportive and wonderful culture, but just like anywhere else, there are some who take the rules as permission to be exclusive and cruel.

    Great book
I can't understand why this book only has an average of 4 stars. It is great. It is intelligent literary fiction, and the characters are convincingly male and gay, perhaps that's why. It's not a romance as such. The plot is built around an attempt at a relationship, but it's not the lusty fireworks or angsty hearts and flowers of genre fiction. Instead, it is quite sad and fulfilling, leading to a mystery of sorts. Along the way, the strength of the MC's friendships are tested and found lacking. It is a book about betrayal and loss, about the insidiousness of politics at the national as well as local level, and the ruthlessness of political activists, be they congressional figures or community organizers. It is haunting and affecting. I heartily recommend it.
    I could bearly finish it
Dreadful. The story was too slow, the reading monotone. I didn't enjoy it and will not purchase any other titles of the author

A breakneck tale of kick-ass, wise-ass, sexy-ass lesbians and zombies.
Eat Your Heart Out opens on what promises to be another tediously annoying day at Ashbee's Furniture Outlet. Then the strip-mall calm of Nowhere, Ohio, is shattered by the sudden, simultaneous appearance of Renni Ramirez-hyper-competent star of the beloved Rising Evil B-movie franchise-and actual zombies, leaving Ashbee's hapless staff and Renni trapped behind an automatic door they can't lock. Can failed creative-writing student/apprentice store manager/eagle-eyed markswoman Devin escape the besieged furniture store to rescue her girlfriend? Will Renni's experience slaughtering motion-captured CGI monsters save the day before the army bombs the town? Once bitten, how many zombies can a person expect to take out before succumbing to infection? Who is the mysterious Deus Ex Machina, and what is he doing with that bone saw? All of these questions and more whisper behind the scream of the single most important thing Devin needs to know in order to survive: is Renni a top or a bottom?

    Narrator is BORED
Ok story. Could use more action and better climax for a zombie book.
Why does the narrator sound so bored? Why can't she pronounce so many simple words like minute (the adjective not the verb).
It's annoying. Why am I paying money for this???
    Irreverant Lesbian Zombie Romp
The action doesn't slow down. Devon and Renni never stop. If they aren't being chased by zombies, Devon is having a star struck moment or flirtatious mishap. Meanwhile, Renni is the epitome of competent zompocalypse hero chick. Heidi Mattson's delivery on some of the more comedic lines made me laugh out loud. She nailed Devon's frenetic inner monologue. All in all the story is best listened to in one sitting.
    A fun and amusing read
This afternoon I decided to read this book because of the "author's review" I read on Amazon. It made me laugh so I gave it go. It was fun, and amusing, and funny, and I wasn't disappointed. It's a zombie story, but not really. It's not a romance disguised as horror (yay!), but it does have a romantic element. It's a couple of messed up characters in a messed up situation doing the best they can. Did I mention it's fun? Yes? Well, I thought it was and I'm glad I gave it a shot.

What made the experience of listening to Deadly Dreams the most enjoyable?
I loved being able to bookmark the story. The story itself was the most enjoyable. I like being able to go about doing other tasks while listening to the book.
What other book might you compare Deadly Dreams to and why?
Chelsea Caine has some psychotic criminals in her books, I'd say Victor Banis comes really close to shocking us.

    Publisher's Summary:
Patron saints, headlocks, thrash metal, crash diets, dogpiles, nutpulls and only the occasional assault.
Set in Little Falls, New Jersey in 1993, PINS weaves the classic story of a Catholic saint into a compelling modern life - and near-death - account of Joey Nicci, a fifteen-year-old Italian-American wrestler. After befriending Donald "Dink" Kohrs, Joey and his new posse get involved in pranks and partying that eventually get out of control, resulting in the death of a maligned fellow teammate.
The ensuing legal battle and media frenzy alter Joey's life and his self-perception as a gay teenager while shattering his fragile love for fellow teammate Dink. Like his patron saint, his battle against his own teammates forces him to suffer for his beliefs. His survival becomes a literary miracle. A compelling story of a loving yet confused family, coaches and teachers struggling with multiple issues of violence and homophobia amid the clan-like world of teenage athletes, PINS brings together elements now frighteningly common in the media: bullying jocks, assaults on weaker students, faculty and families unwittingly allowing such behavior.
Called "prescient" and "heartfelt" by two of today's leading writers, PINS layers symbols from the worlds of animals and religion, yet while achieving a unique literary style, it remains accessible to the group for whom it speaks - gay teenagers.

PINS Has Me in a Firm Chokehold!
What did you love best about PINS?
Have you ever discovered something that is so wonderful and then wondered why you had never encountered that thing before? Both Jim Provenzano (author) and Paul Fleschner (narrator) are now such new discoveries for me. I can only thank Audible for this ideal double-discovery. As I listened --always while dog-walking in August--I am sure that my jaw was slack as I heard the marvelous turning of phrases by the author. Mr. Provenzano has himself wrestled for 14 years, and it shows in his details. He obviously lived the life of a high school wrestler. But his writing...so expressive! Often, I would press pause to savor a sentence or thought. (My dogs grew bored with this as we all stopped to either think, feel, or sniff.) Also, Paul Fleschner's reading is spot-on. It is hard to believe that he is the same person who is capturing all the high school boys, their coaches, parents, and family members--both boys and girls. Every word is spoken with intentional purpose.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Favorite character? I want to say the story's protagonist, Joseph, is my favorite. Being a gay adolescent is so tough--I know all too well--but hearing Joeseph make the same discoveries I had made brought back emotions to me I long tucked away since I was his age.
Which character as performed by Paul Fleschner was your favorite?
I think it must be Joseph's dad, Dino. To me, he is the voice of reason which grounds all of the other characters. Mr. Fleschner makes the most of his resonant voice to capture Dino's love for his son.
If you could rename PINS, what would you call it?
I cannot improve upon PINS. It is meaningful to this story on so many levels.
    Any additional comments?
As I write this review, I have about 90 minutes left of the story. This, in dog-walks, is about two. I am already mourning the loss of Joseph and Dink in my life, so I am ready to move onto other books by Mr. Provenzano.

    Amid the Darkness
Well done! I did a buddy read with my friend Adriana on this book in the Good reads, MM Romance group. Click the link to see an in-depth break down of the story and our thoughts as we read. Warning there are spoilers in that thread.
    [...]
I wasn't sure what to expect from this book when I started. I had found the first book of the series interesting but thought that it was missing elements to make it a really good book.
This book however is a much better story.
The characters were much richer in this book. The two Main characters grow from sex starved, frienemies in the first book into two fully fleshed out individuals who have a solid motivation for their actions, independent feelings that arise from 'relatable' experiences, and independent, realistic goals.
The emotional roller-coasters the reader went through in this book were also better in that they were richer.
I loved the authors use of descriptions in this book an example of this can be seen in the opening paragraphs that set up the emotional tone of sadness, desperation, confusion and isolation that I felt would be spot on for the characters.
The plot was much more developed then the first. It was full of twists and zingers that took me by surprise.
I found myself sucked into the mystery elements from the start. What was Refuge Inc,? How was the compound built? Who was the prophet? And so on. The story grew from there into an action packed, thriller.
When I consider that the author is an independent author without the resources that authors attached to big named publishers have, I feel this story was extremely well written.
I have to say that there are a fair amount of spelling issues (wrong words) like instead of saying their plan, it says their plain. Or instead of the word 'the' it says 'they'.
It took me out of the story a second or two while I thought about what I read and found the misplaced word, but it wasn't so bad that I couldn't reason it out quickly and get back to the story.
Yet over all I feel this story was a very good read. One that I truly enjoyed and will read again. And So I give it five full stars.
    amid the darkness
This is the second book in this series.

    50/50 shot here...
When choosing this book, I thought I was about to read an adventure surrounding a detective murder mystery, with a twist. I was prepared for that. What I got was a bit disconcerting. Initially I thought the character Ed Comparetto was the protagonist, an openly gay detective set out to discover who is killing members of his community. Then we meet Timothy Bright, who in my opinion was the actual protagonist, and the entire dynamic of the story seemed to change. It was odd. There were so many inconsistencies throughout the story that I stated at one time, Ed is acting like a poorly written character in one of them awful "B" rated Syfy television movies. And it just kept getting worse. The implausibility of some of the story was almost unbearable. Recommend, I really cannot say. Some will enjoy this story and others, not so much. It's not so bad that I want to get my money back, but I am not sure I will listen to it again. It's a crap match...
    Brilliant murder/thriller!
I 'read' this book in its audio format so my enjoyment was impacted by a number of factors: the plot, quality of the story, style of the telling, characterisation and finally the narration. Ideally I would like to be able to assess the two components (the story and the narration) separately but actually find the narration has too much direct impact on my views of the story to do this effectively.
This is a mystery/thriller and is a beautifully crafted tale that takes the listener deep into a darker side of the world of internet hook-ups. It plunges straight into a series of brutal murders. It is blunt and graphic and violent and horrific. The murders are descriptive, grossly so, with descriptions of sights, sounds, smells and feelings giving a sense of realism to the scenes. It was almost like being plunged into an episode of Criminal Minds.
During the early part of the story, we are introduced to the various murder victims before they face their final moments. Even though each of these characters only play a short role, the author does a wonderful job of bringing a real personal element to each one.

Would you try another book from Vicktor Alexander and/or Guy Veryzer?
I do enjoy Vicktor Alexander but I believe my head actually started to hur because of Guy Veryzer voice, who ever told him he could narrate was not a friend, I tried several times to get into this story but each time I could only stand maybe 5 minutes of his voice
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
Never got to the end because of the narration
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Guy Veryzer?
    anybody else would be better
    Any additional comments?
Will have to go buy the book now
Don't bother - 2 star for the writing
Would you try another book from Vicktor Alexander and/or Guy Veryzer?
Sure, the writing was good and funny, but a REALLY short story.
What was most disappointing about Vicktor Alexanders story?
    The story was lame.
How could the performance have been better?
The narrator almost put me to sleep. Get Jack Le Fleur or Paul Morey.
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Absolutely, the writing was witty and engaging, the story was just lame.
    Any additional comments?
They should try again with a full novel and develop the characters more. They could even use these characters, they had lost of potential.

    Deadly Wrong
Where does Deadly Wrong rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
This book is the second in Victor Banis' Deadly series and it is one of my favorites of his. It makes up for the ending on Deadly Nightshade and continues the series. I don't do spoilers but it is fun and Stanley is a hoot in it. Also, this vocal performance is much more in line with the characters. While I love the book Deadly Nightshade I did not particularly like the narrator. This really enjoyed this narrator and would highly recommend the book.
Who was your favorite character and why?
    Stanley
What about Guy Veryzers performance did you like?

What did you love best about Deadly Wrong?
Stanley, of course. Love his sense of humor.
Have you listened to any of Guy Veryzers other performances before? How does this one compare?
No, this is a first. A far improvement over Deadly Nightshade narrator. Any chance of a do over???
    Any additional comments?
Good storyline and was surprised on who the culprit actually was.
