Great wit and insight as writer
This author has a wonderful sense of humor and in so skilled in writing narratives. She has a great outlook on life and an unusual perspective. This is gender literature which really gives you information and insight into members of different communities in how they think and feel.
    Two Stars
Was not as good as her other books in my opinion.
    Wonderful
I may never speak ill of poetry again.
Because this collection flows so well as a whole work, it seems wrong to mention individual pieces. It is, sort of, a story about a run away waitress and her dog. It may sum up to that, but each piece is an entirely different country.
One entry in particular has a strong grip on my memory because it touches on a story that resurfaces through my life.
When I was in high school, I was an avid hiker and planned to travel the southern span of the Appalachian Trail before I submitted to college. We were training for it, taking weekend hikes with fully loaded packs, breaking in boots, camping in snow, getting in shape for the long trek when our leader told us that two women had been murdered along the trail, so the trip was off. He was looking at me when he told the group. Years later, I read Bill Bryson's book about hiking the trail (and was appalled by his lack of preparation!) when he mentioned the murders. It was the first time I heard that the women were lesbians. That they were a couple. Several years after reading Bryson's book, I heard that someone was charged for those murders. I was amazed that anyone in law enforcement cared enough to keep the case open. I tried putting together those bits of information into a full story, but it was never clear what happened, or even when, and if those facts were muddled with another murder of two women on the trail that happened a different year. I never found out if the same person was charged with both sets of murders. Sometimes I wondered if there was one murder or two.
    Then I read Ali's words:
"The women hikers were murdered for being lesbians.
The sound of that drones in and out,
soon I don't know what happened exactly-"
And for once poetry meant something to me. Something personal. It was a BAM! between the eyes moment of connection for me. I didn't have to diagram her words to know what they meant.
As I read through this incredible work, I was turning down page corners so that I knew where to go back and read again (Death. Love. About her dog.) but had to stop because almost every corner was bent. There's so much to be found in her words. I'm crushing on this book. I'm starting over from page one. Share the infatuation. Get a copy.
Yes, Ali, There is a Camus
Ali Liebegott's new collection of poetry, The Beautifully Worthless, is a stunning debut.

    Publisher's Summary:
When a tragedy derailed his life, screenwriter Isaac Zevin became a recluse. Between the cheesy straight-to-video action scripts and his drinking problem, he's surprised to get a call from Tony Kendall, the award-winning director he was slated to work with just before he fell off the map. After some persuading, Isaac agrees to help Tony realize his modernized vision of The Picture of Dorian Gray.
On set, Isaac is horrified to find the lead role filled by heartthrob superstar Colby Lightner, an actor Isaac believes embodies everything that's wrong with Hollywood. Colby, on the other hand, couldn't be happier to work with Isaac and resolves to make Isaac like him. As Isaac deals with his unwelcome attraction to Colby and the stress of writing a script during production, Laith, his troubled godson, shows up at his door looking for help. Isaac knows if he turns his back on the boy, he'll never forgive himself. But how can he juggle his craft, his crush, and his godson's problems when he can't even take care of his cat?
    Members Reviews:
    Snarky love
all the angst is in the prologue. cute story but moments that could have been heartrending just weren't taken that far. pleasant listen.
    Good listen
I really enjoyed this audiobook. It is told mostly from Isaac's POV, although there are a couple of other character's POV scattered in there. Isaac is a broken man after the tragic death of his fiancée. He handles it in self-destructive behavior and acerbic wit to push people away. His only close relations are his godson, his best friend, and a cat named Pumpkin. Colby is a well known in the closet actor, who is 11 years younger and falls into lust with Isaac. This is not a lovey dovey story; most of it is about Isaac getting over his partner's death and reengaging in society.
Both characters are not instantly likeable and could rub some readers/listeners wrong. In addition, the narrator (who is one of my favorites) chose to give Isaac a sometime grating voice, which I liked, but others may not. I thought it suited Isaac's personality, but it sometimes sounded like a grouchy old man. I liked this couple because they are both so flawed.
That said, I didnt buy them as a couple; they just didnt seem to have any chemistry. However, Isaacs journey alone makes this worth a credit. On a side note, I have no idea what the book cover art has to do with the story. It looks like there might be some BDSM in the story, which there is not.
    Worth the time
I really enjoy a book with interesting character's and this book has a good mix of well developed chatacters.
Along with a good storyline to kept me reading.
    It wasn't worth it.
What disappointed you about Until It's Time to Go?
The characters were empty although the main character might have been interesting if the narration wasn't so horrible. The plot was mediocre.
Has Until It's Time to Go turned you off from other books in this genre?
    No.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Peter B. Brooke?
Anyone. The narration ruined any chance of making the book likable.

    SPELLBINDING STORY!!
What did you love best about After the End?
This is a captivating story about overcoming tragedy and learning to live and love again! Quinn will twist your heart in knots and you will both cry and rejoice with him! Grab this book and join Quinn's journey of second chances, second love, and learning to be whole again! Grab the kleenex, you will need em!
What about Gregory Salinass performance did you like?
I love the inflection and pain that Gregory projects into his voice, his sells the story as his own, and that is what you want from a top rate voice performer!
An Emotional Story of Moving Past Loss
Filled with the angst of overcoming loss and moving on through life, this love story clutched at my heart. Quinn struggled after the loss of his longtime partner but when he meets Brady, he's finally tempted to find happiness. The author smoothly juggled both love stories so that readers felt the connection between Quinn and Aaron as well as his new love for Brady. There was the perfect blend of reflection back on Aaron and Quinn's hopefulness for a bright future with Brady. The secondary characters, friends and family, added dimension to the men and rounded out the story.
I enjoyed this story as an audiobook. The narrator used his voice to express the emotions behind the words. At one point, it was almost as if he was sighing and crying along with me as I listened. This highly emotional, angst-filled story is a great listen.
    Maybe better in book form?
Quinn was in love with Aaron. Aaron got cancer and died two years ago. Quinn is very, very sad about this. He finally agrees to go out on a blind date set up by his BFF and meets Brady.
    Brady is a saint.
    Really, he is.
Brady listens, understands, and even fights for Quinn, despite the constant pressure of Aarons figurative ghost in the room. (No, this isnt a paranormal story!)
I both really loved and really didnt love this book. Especially in audio format. There were times when if felt like HOURS of internal dialog about how much Quinn missed Aaron and how unfair it was to Brady and how much he missed Aaron and how unfair that was to Brady you get the idea. These bouts of doubt were interspersed with Brady first just getting through to Quinn then their relationship slowly growing. But it was a little, one step forward, two steps back, for awhile.
At the mid point we finally got some momentum and the relationship began to get its legs under itself and move forward.

    Publisher's Summary:
Bi-sexual wizard Randall Wise is the quintessential good guy. Still single at 30, he's never had a relationship or even a brush with love. Rand is convinced that good guys finish last at love and decides he needs to change if he's ever going to find a mate of his own. Then he looks out his bedroom window to find that the sexiest guy he's ever laid eyes on has moved in next door.
Brendan Thorne is gay, klutzy, and to his thinking, ordinary. At 26, he's got a baby face that makes men treat him as they would an innocent little brother. Determined to at least get laid, Brendan sexes up his appearance and finds his hot new neighbor ready and willing to do the dirty with him. The sex is amazing and both Rand and Brendan sense it's the start of something more. But is it real love or just magic?
    Members Reviews:
    Funny, sweet, hot and paranormal
Randall and Brendan are both lonely and not getting any with their current personalities, so they both decide to try being someone different in order to attract a mate. Randall tries to butch it up and Brendan decides he might just be a twink .
Little do they know that they are actually pre-destined for each other and the reason theyve been failing at love is that their well-meaning friends have been sabotaging any relationships to keep them single for each other!
When the time is (apparently) right, they meet and hit it off. There are a few lingering doubts, but once they drop the façade, they are a match made in heaven.
There is a little bit of a time issue, if they dont mate in time, Brendan wont get all his magic powers and there are forces trying to keep him from obtaining them. Luckily the couples friends and family do all they can to shove the pair together in a way that is both sweet and sometimes hilarious.
    **
This was a fairly short little story about two mates finding each other. They are really cute together and when theyre trying on their new façades (butch and twink) its really funny. The family is really funny, too. (One Uncle acts as Brendans feline familiar in order to get the inside scoop!)
There were some plot points that didnt make sense (like why the friends and family didnt push the pair together sooner rather than just guard them when it was clear they could tell them their destiny), but overall the story was quick and hot and very enjoyable.
    Audio:
Chip Wood did a nice job with all the different characters. He used some great accents (esp. a Scottish one) and his timing was good for the romantic scenes and the humorous scenes.
I enjoyed listening to this light, hot, paranormal story and give both the story and narration a 4 of 5 stars.

    Publisher's Summary:
It's amateur night at the ultra-private, members-only Caloosa Club on the Fort Myers, Florida, riverfront. Trouble begins when the fat lady sings. Her triumph is sweet. But, only hours later, the diva lies near death in a hotel room upstairs, the victim of a vicious beating. Hotel manager Dan Ewing and his sidekick, Lee County Detective Bud Wright, soon discover that this was no lady and that a variety of unsavory characters hoped to dance on the dead diva's grave. In Southwest Florida in January 1951, almost anyone who wanted to have a little illicit fun put his - or her - life on the line. Dan, a World War II veteran who survived Japanese torpedoes, five days on a life raft and the death of his Navy lover, feels he's found more safety and freedom than any gay man might expect. Dealing cards, serving untaxed mixed drinks and selling the services of escorts of both sexes, he acts as if he has nothing to lose. Yet he does. Bud, his secret lover, is a former Marine sergeant twice decorated for valor. Strong and brave but deeply conventional, he lives with the uneasy knowledge that every time he and Dan make love they commit a felony according to the laws he is sworn to uphold. The Caloosa, exposed to the pitiless glare of a front-page homicide investigation, attracts unwanted attention. The mounting pressure, instead of forging a stronger bond between Dan and Bud, threatens to tear them apart. As the jeopardy to both escalates, Dan realizes he may lose the one man who holds the key to the peace and harmony of his postwar world.
    Members Reviews:
    compelling and wonderful
for some reason sometimes Amazon doesn't reference "It Takes Two" - Mackle's first work where characters Dan Ewing and Bud Wright are introduced - when this novel comes up, but I recommend that one read that story first to establish the time and place for this story. But even if one doesn't read that one first, this will still be enjoyed on its own for the way Mackle tells the story of how gay men (especially those who served with distinction in wartime) in the post WWII 40's and 50's (in the South in these stories) tried to find and keep love and long term relationships alive, while entertaining with a compelling murder mystery where the characters seem to come alive and leap off the pages. These stories will probably not appeal to the reader looking for the fluff of standard m/m romance but they will appeal to the thoughtful reader trying to understand how far gay men have come over the last 60 years, in the face of irrational prejudice, fear and hatred, all the while tweaking the mind with fascinating plots. It would be great if these stories were about historical aberrations but in fact as far as society has come in that period of time there is still a lot of progress that needs to be made. Family and friends of any young gay man coming of age and trying to come to grips with his homosexuality should put these books at the top of the kid's reading lists - they're that important. Kudos to Mackle for writing such compelling stuff - this one and "It Takes Two" are magnificent. Oh, and read the Captain Harding stories by this author, as well - they're marvelous tales of mischief, irony and love among gay men.
Detective novel with a bit of historical romance
First of all, this book was great fun to read.

    Dated
Anytime I can get an audio that focuses on Bi or lesbian women I make sure to get it. This was an especially good month with this book as well as Sing You Home by Jodi Picoult. Normally it's very difficult to find a book by a mainstream author with a lesbian theme. Okay, perhaps in it's day this was probably a highly progressive look at a scorned and feared minority. Unfortunately that was fifty years ago and the text comes off as hopelessly out of date in atmosphere, as well as attitudes. If you're an older GBLT member or supporter this book might be a reminder of just how far we've come. I on the other hand, am a 34 year old bisexual woman and the fear and self hatred expressed in this book turned me off in a hurry and eventually I gave up on it and decided that in the future I would take a much longer look at an audio before I spend too much time on it.
Vintage Block - A Coming of Age Lesbian Story
Where does Warm and Willing rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Warm and Willing is in the top quarter of all the audiobooks I've listened to. Being a Lawrence Block fan, I enjoy all his writing. His wide range of subjects and depth is incredible.
What other book might you compare Warm and Willing to and why?
I would compare Warm and Willing to Thirty, another Lawrence Block coming of age erotica novel.
What does Emily Beresford bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Emily Beresford brought the story to life. Her voice is sweet and very feminine - perfect for this book.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It didn't make me laugh or cry just made me a little sad. It reminded me that people who are different are born that way. Their lives are made more difficult by society.
    Any additional comments?
Solid, entertaining story without being preachy.
Well told, but very much of its time
Is there anything you would change about this book?
No. A book would have to be appallingly bad before I would consider it proper to tell the author how to do their job.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
The portrayal of the 1960s lesbian underground was the most interesting element for me.
Have you listened to any of Emily Beresfords other performances before? How does this one compare?
    No.
Do you think Warm and Willing needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
No. It stands alone as a complete story.
    Any additional comments?
In the 60s, the young-ish Lawrence Block - one of my very favourite writers - created a character called Jill Emerson. Jill wasn't a private eye, an alcoholic, a burglar or even a hitwoman - at least not that I know of. Jill Emerson was a writer - a persona used by Block even in communication with Jill's publishers - and she wrote frequently lesbian fiction.

Members Reviews:
A Gay Love Story Appropriate For Any Audience
I must admit that when I first saw this book advertised, I wanted to read it to see how this western compared to BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN. But even though both stories involved homophobia affecting the lives of two gay men, the writing styles are completely different and each author told their tale in unique and refreshing ways. Whereas Annie Proulx told her story in the short story format and the language was complex and full of literary imagery with so much implied rather than written down, Probst's style was simple language written in the novel format much in the same way
that Ernest Hemingway wrote. To compare Proulx to Probst would be like comparing Thomas Wolfe to Ernest Hemingway trying to decide which author is the best. It can't and shouldn't be done because they both should be read with their own unique writing styles in mind.
Mark Probst wins the reader over by creating two very likable main characters who both just happen to be male and who fall in love immediately as if they have been struck by lightning the second they first meet. I think the drawing card for each of them is that they are so different from each other. Ethan is younger (17) and is a sheltered bookworm who up to the point of their meeting has lived vicariously through the books he reads. Travis is older (22) and has already been away from home for several years and has been on several cattle drives already. We discover as the story unfolds that Travis has already had some sexual experiences with both females and males but what is missing in his life, is that one person that he can really love. He finds that in Ethan and he has to find a way to incorporate Ethan into his life on a daily basis so he convinces him to join the cattle drive to Wyoming.
The fact that Ethan and Travis are in love and not in lust with each other makes it quite acceptable that Probst doesn't include scenes of erotic love making between the two men. We're still able to read between the lines; often we can imagine far better scenarios than what might have been written down to titillate us. Just as the horror in Alfred Hitchcock's movies were achieved by letting us imagine what happened rather than showing us, Probst is more successful many times by leaving things out of his writing than if he had chosen to put them in.
The lesser characters in the book are as vividly drawn as the two main characters and not one character is superfluous to the plot. Probst brilliantly finds a way to include the stumbling block to the success of Ethan's and Travis' love and he is faithful and true to the time and place about which he is writing.
