Interesting & well performed, but very slow
It's interesting to see a fantasy with older protagonists. (Too many girl or boy save-the-day stories lying around) The setting is also interesting.
Unfortunately, the author focused far too much on character's emotions that aren't necessary giving them more depth, or is crucial to the story line. Things move at quite an agonising pace. But looking forward to see the conclusion.
Vance's performance definitely helped a lot.

During the last few months, former bounty hunter Rachel Morgan has been rather busy. Having escaped relatively unscathed from her corrupt former employers, she's not only acquired a vampiric room-mate called Ivy, faced werewolf assassins, and battled shape-shifting demons, but she has also found the time to pick up a boyfriend (even if he is only human) and to open her very own runner agency.
But cohabiting with a vampire, however reformed, has its dangers. Ivy's evil vampire ex-boyfriend has decided that he wants her back, and he views Rachel as a tasty side-dish. To make matters worse, Rachel's demon mark is the ultimate vamp-aphrodisiac; one that works both ways.
The stakes are high, and if Rachel is to save herself and her roommate she must challenge the master vampire and confront the dark secrets she's kept hidden even from herself.

Great story, but lacks 5 star performance.
I listened to the first book in the series, and i wasnt going to buy the second because i didnt particularly enjoy the narrator. She does take some getting used to and i am now glad I did buy the second and the third in the series, and im buying the fourth today. So take that for what ever its worth.
    Better than the 1st Book!
What did you like most about Rachel Morgan: The Hollows (2) - The Good, The Bad, and The Undead?
It's way better than the first book. The author writes a lot less about how people look and the way their eyes are, which leaves more time for the actual story. It is much easier to follow what's happening and you can even understand some of the characters. Harrison comes up with new challenges and twists for Rachel Morgan which keeps the story somewhat interesting, even though her main enemy is still the same.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
The narrator wasn't very successful at getting different emotions across and making it easy to follow the different characters, but she made it easy to follow the story and listen to the audiobook.
    fab. book
This is an amazing continuation to what is going to be a fantastic series. Well written and amazingly well narrated. I loved learning more about Rachel, her life and her friends/family. The plot had me gripped from the start and I'm really glad that I listened to it as it meant that I was immersed in the story even more than I would have done had I read it in eBook format.
Didn't capture me like the first.
Simply put this book dragged for me.

Isak is a white-eye, feared and despised in equal measure. Trapped in a life of poverty, hated and abused by his father, Isak dreams of escape, but when his chance comes, it isn't to a place in the army as he'd expected. Instead, the Gods have marked him out as heir-elect to the brooding Lord Bahl, the Lord of the Fahlan.
Lord Bahl is also a white-eye, a genetic rarity that produces men stronger, more savage and more charismatic than their normal counterparts. Their magnetic charm and brute strength both inspires and oppresses others. Now is the time for revenge, and the forging of empires. With mounting envy and malice the men who would themselves be kings watch Isak, chosen by Gods as flawed as the humans who serve them, as he is shaped and moulded to fulfil the prophecies that are encircling him like scavenger birds. The various factions jostle for the upper hand, and that means violence, but the Gods have been silent too long and that violence is about to spill over and paint the world the colour of spilled blood and guts and pain and anguish...
This audio edition is read by David Rintoul. David Rintoul has played leading parts with most of the major British theatre companies. Many television appearances include Darcy in the first BBC Pride and Prejudice. He frequently appears on radio and has recorded over 100 audiobooks. Starts out slow but quickly builds momentum
What did you love best about The Stormcaller?
While it does follow the standard fantasy formula Stormcaller puts some unique spins on the genre. First while the main the character is definitely the hero of the story for most of the story he is surrounded by people who loathe and mistrust him just for what he is not who he is. This lays the groundwork for a really rich character who is very multi-dimensional, at one moment the baddest solidier on the field and the next a young man doubting his own place in the world. That said I think I like the internal conflict the main character deals with throughout the story and seeing him develop through the book I am anxious for the next novel in the series.
What other book might you compare The Stormcaller to and why?
I would say it mixes elements from Chronicles of Amber and Warhammer 40k. On the one hand the character really grows throughout the novel and on the other he given similar abilities and weaknesses enjoyed by the space marines (specifically the Sons of Fenris).
What about David Rintouls performance did you like?
I really loved his ability to develop the scene he gave each character its own voice and really acted as though he were experiencing what the characters did.

Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fantasy: Epic
    Publisher's Summary:
In a remote city on the edge of two worlds, where blood has power and water is more precious than freedom, three far-flung friends unite on a quest to save their families.
Sal Hrvati's estranged father has brought more into the world than the woman he loved. Instead of saving her from the Void Beneath, he has summoned an unknown creature - a creature with a mission of its own and a past that stretches back to the beginning of the world. The quest to find both of them entangles Sal and his companions in a hunt for magical treasure on the floor of the Divide, a mighty crack in the earth inhabited by creatures that are not remotely human. Desert landscapes and dirigibles feature in a fast-paced fantasy that combines romance, adventure, and humour with an original take on magic.
The Books of the Cataclysm take inspiration from many arcane and mythological sources. In positing that this world is just one of many "realms", three of which are inhabited by humans during various stages of their lives, it begins in the present world but soon propels the listener to a landscape that is simultaneously familiar and fantastic.

    A Millennium Later
Blood Debt (2008) is the second fantasy novel in The Cataclysm series, followingThe Crooked Letter. In the previous volume, Hadrian searched the three realms for his twin brother Seth. They were reunited in Sheol and made their choice. Ellis also made a choice and the twins found themselves within the Void Beneath, becoming the first Lost Minds.
A thousand years or more after the Cataclysm was suspended, most people followed either the Wardens of Air and Water or the Mages of Stone and Fire. The Wardens lived near the ocean and the Mages lived in the interior. They were separated by the Divide, a vast man-made chasm.
In this novel, Skender Van Haasteren the Tenth is a Stone Mage trainee. He is the latest in a line of respected Stone Mages. His father is an instructor and Principal of the Keep, the school for Stone Mages.
Shilly of Gooron lives in a hidden dwelling near Fundelry. She has the talent of sensing Change forces, but she cannot directly affect the Change. Yet she can borrow the talents of others to use these forces.
Sal Hrvati lives with Shilly. He is a wild talent, depending neither on air nor stone. He has direct access to the Change forces.
Tom is a Sky Warden Engineer. He has talents with both machinery and Change forces.
Chu Milang is a resident of Laure and a former miner. She damaged her wing and lost her license while attempting a dare. Now she is seeking ways to restore both.
In this story, Tom comes looking for Sal and Shilly. Sal's biological father -- Highson Sparre -- apparently had constructed a homunculus and used it in some ritual. A man had died from fear and the Homunculus left across the wilderness. Highson followed the construct.
Skender learns that his mother is lost. His father tells him that she has not contacted him through the Change for two days. Skender decides to go searching for his mother and his father tells him where to go and gives him the keys to a buggy.
Sal, Shilly and Tom ride a buggy after the warden search party that is following the Homunculus. Eventually they reach the searchers, who have been stranded in a null zone where the Change cannot reach.

    Enjoyable Read/Listen!
I enjoyed the book quite a lot. It's a historical-fantasy based in London with a bit of magic etc and a good amount of mystery and action to keep it interesting.
Quite similar to the Locke Lamora books in terms of the type of fantasy novel.
The book does have a gender-role breaking sub-theme but the protagonist is not part of it and it is definitely not what the book is about.
The book has a grand total of TWO gay characters. The other reviewer who mentions every second character being gay is exaggerating quite a lot...
But even if there were more than two gay characters, it's hardly a reason to read or not read the book. The problems you would face reading it are no different than if a hetro guy was reading a book with a straight female protagonist...
Overall there is very little explicit details gay or straight. A few scattered sentences is about it.
Given the price ($8 when I bought it), this book is DEFINITELY worth a read. Very very cheap for 15 hours of solid entertainment!
I was sad that book 2 isn't here or isn't written yet.
    Pretty good.
If you are looking for an action packed romp, this isn't the book for you. It is a pretty decent story set to a fairly interesting fantasy background.
You'll note that almost every review remarks on the homosexual relationships in the book. I only think it's notable that this is the first book I've ever seen with them front and center. This was far far less sexual or graphic than many heterosexual encounters described in countless other books in the genre. It really is only 3 gay characters and 1 bi.
In the end, it past the time. It lost my interest a bit at the end. And I haven't gone on to the sequel. But I may at some point.
    Unusual in a good way
I really enjoyed this story, historically it was fascinating. Not as much magic in it as I usually like in a book though, but enough fantasy to keep me interested. I really liked the heroine, she is really original and I liked her a lot. Each character was really interesting in their own way too. Not sure if I'm interested enough to go the second book though, for some reason. Maybe because I like more fantasy and magic?
I liked it, but why are half the men gay?
What made the experience of listening to The Alchemist of Souls the most enjoyable?
Engaging characters, compelling action, a little mystery, and hilarious English slang, a great combination making for a great listen.
What does Michael Page bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Michael Page is amazing. I've listened to seven or eight books he's read and I've not been disappointed yet.
    Any additional comments?
Really though, there were like more gay men than straight men...

    Imaginative pulpy adventure

I think of these as second-rate but I pick them up when I find them cheap at Audible theyre short fast-moving stories with imaginative scenery and lots of action. In a Lin Carter novel youre sure to find a sword-wielding man with sweaty thews, a scantily-clad girl who needs to be saved, and lots of scary monsters. Usually this takes place in some fascinatingly impossible setting such as on the boughs of gigantic trees, under a volcano, in a lost city, or on an uncharted planet.
In The Warrior of Worlds End, a down-and-out godmaker and his wife are traveling through a desert when they find a large young man wandering around. The young man has no idea who he is or where he came from, so the couple adopts him, names him Ganelon, and puts him to work in their shop. Ganelon seems a little dull-witted and doesnt have the skills necessary to be a successful merchant, but when war comes to their town, its Ganelon who goes out on the front lines and saves the day. Soon he is apprenticed to a magician who takes an interest in him and he leaves his family behind. Under the magicians tutelage, Ganelon has a series of adventures and is shown to be extraordinarily bright after all. And, as the magician suspected all along, Ganelon may be a whole lot more than he seems.
The Warrior of Worlds End, the first novel in Carters GONDWANE epic, is better than most of the books Ive read by Lin Carter (though Ive only read seven so far and hes written so many more than that). Carters always got a cool (if not original) setting, but I especially liked this one which is a Dying-Earth-style story where society has regressed to a nearly medieval state but there is magic and remnants of technology to be found, including cloning and constructs. The Warrior of Worlds End is a nice blend of science fiction and fantasy and there are lots of little imaginative details that enrich the story metal automatons, tiger-men and other hybrid creatures, gigantic bubbles of vacuum that threaten to destroy whole towns, a floating island in the sky.
Carter also does a better job with characterization here than in the other stories Ive read, especially with secondary characters. Theyre still somewhat sketchy, but people are given more backstory and personality than I was expecting based on my previous experiences with Carter. There are actually a couple of admirably strong and intelligent women in this story something thats hard to find in pulp adventures which seem to be written mainly for adolescent males.

    Publisher's Summary:
Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast trilogy is widely acknowledged to be, as Robertson Davies pronounced, "a classic of our age." In these extraordinary novels, Peake created a world where all is like a dream - lush, fantastical, and vivid. Yet it was incomplete. Parkinson's disease took Peake's life in 1968, depriving his fans of the fourth and final volume of the series, Titus Awakes except for a few tantalizing pages, after which his writing became indecipherable. Or so it seemed.
In January of 2010, Peake's granddaughter found four composition books in her attic. They contained the fabled Titus Awakes in its entirety. Peake had outlined the novel for his wife, Maeve Gilmore, who had at last finished Peake's masterpiece.
It starts with Titus leaving Castle Gormenghast. Peake wrote: "With every pace he drew away from Gormenghast mountain, and from everything that belonged to his home. That night, as Titus lay asleep in the tall barn, a nightmare held him." Fans of Peake will delight in this new, wonderful novel, published 100 years after his birth, every bit as thrilling and masterfully written as his famed trilogy.

    Horrible narrator
Well, the narration is bothering me so much that I don't know if I can finish the book. The narrator reads with a totally weird rhythm. She hurries through most of a long sentence only to make a totally unnecessary and weird pause in the middle of nowhere. I assume it's because she ran out of breath. Or, she'll start with a weird dramatic pause but the rest of the sentence then shows that all the drama was for naught. Example: "The man [pause pause pause] tipped his hat and spat on the ground". Eh?? Why pause dramatically before a hat tipping???!!!! And then there's weird emphasis on words that don't merit emphasis in a sentence that doesn't merit emphasis either. Example: "I tried [pause] with ALL my might and then a door [pause pause] OPENED in my mind". Ok, a door opened, big deal!! I'm so frustrated with this, it's very exhausting to listen to because the narrator essentially misleads me all the time. I don't know if I'm explaining this very well.
about the plot, I read reviews by men who complain about how all the men in the book are evil and get slaughtered by the women over and over. Also some guy complained that the sex scenes are gratuitous and intended for lesbians only. I don't understand why he would think that, I'm on hour 6 and there was one dream/memory where the sex was described in exactly 1 single, not overly long sentence. Exactly one, I counted very carefully. Maybe the remaining hours of the book will be filled with meaningless gratuitous lesbian sex, but so far there's no such thing. One thing that is kind of taxing is how often the men's disrespect for the women is described, over and over, it does feel like the authors are trying to bias the reader to sympathize with the women, but it feels a bit overdone because it's very noticeable. I feel like I'm being lectured.
I give it 3 stars because I'm ignoring the narration. Otherwise the narration would bring this down to 1 star.
    Snore
Just couldn't get into it, the narration drones a bit, and the story jumps around to much without explaining to the audience what is going on.

    The Far Kingdoms
I never write bad reviews because I have enjoyed many books that had poor reviews overall. I also think comments on narrarators are very much tied to a particular listeners taste. However this audiobook requires a warning to all. The narrarator does a poor job. I could not put my finger on what was wrong for a while and then it hit me. This narrarator pauses in the middle of sentences where he shouldn't. I'm not talking about pauses for effect. I'm talking about wierd disconnects and it happens often. Things like "I turned *2 second pause* around to look, and saw it was not truely *3 second pause* there. I have over 400 titles in my library and am proud to say I have finished all but a handful. But this is the first book that I had to turn off, not because the content was bad, but because I couldn't take the narrarator any longer. The storyline is fine. It's not going to blow you away, but for listeners like me that are waiting for the next Wheel of Time or GRRM book and have exhausted every recommended title on audible it is ok. But the *3 second pause* narraration is stunted and unlistenable.
    The Far Kingdoms
I think this is the first review I've written on here. I have a ton of Audible books, and I listen to audiobooks all day long...so I look for the longest running books I can find. This book is probably just fine if you read it yourself...but the narration is HORRIBLE on this audiobook. The narrator has a very strange reading pace, he puts the emphasis on the wrong words, and pauses mid sentence. I couldn't finish this book...it is still sitting there in my library, waiting for me to run out of everything else so I need to go back to it.Save your credits..don't download this.

    Publisher's Summary:
A nameless evil stalks the land, preying on all that lives, human and demon alike. Only one man has the power to stem the ravening tide: Safar Timura, greatest wizard of the age, whose matchless magic once raised Iraj Protarus to the throne of all Esmir... and then, when king turned tyrant, destroyed him. Now Safar is done with the deadly intrigues of courts and kings.
Back in his mountain home of Kyrania, he wants only to be left alone. But when a brutal murder smashes his solitude, Safar must lead his people on a desperate trek to safety - a perilous journey to fabled, far-off Syrapis, guided only by a magical vision and the words of a sorcerer long dead. The road leads straight through dark Caluz, a once-proud land now fallen beneath the sorcerous yoke of an unspeakable darkness. But there is no going back. Close at Safar's heels another evil follows like a rapacious wolf: Iraj Protarus. For the King of Kings has returned from the dead, hideously transformed - and thirsting for Safar's blood.
    Critic Reviews:
"Cole proves once again his mastery of setting as well as pacing, and the characterizations are more than acceptable, with the apparent return of Iraj from the dead, more bloodthirsty than ever, providing a cliffhanger ending and promising well for the remainder of the saga." (Booklist)

    Narration lets the trilogy down
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I liked this story but that was definitely despite the horrible narration, I nearly gave up several times. I think Mr Hough needs to revisit the rules of punctuation - pausing in the middle of the sentence for no discernible reason gets irksome very quickly.
If you are going to listen to this story brace yourself!
