    Very Good... But incomplete.
I loved the story, but it doesn't end well. It's too big of a cliffhanger. I would rather the book had ended before the last part started rather than end who knows where exactly before it is finished.
I will continue the series but am now skeptical as I can only hope the next one won't make the same mistake.
I can only guess that the whole first book was cut into 2 parts at the last minute without finding a good way to end it to spread it out. What's wrong with a 12 to 14 hour complete story?
Overall it is very good and worth a read as long as you are aware it is not complete as most first books are for a series start.
Miss pronounced words are a huge pet peeve!
The story is entertaining. The narrator has a good voice and tells the story well. But I always notice when words are mispronounced. It doesn't bother me to much when it's said only once. But in this story the word chitin is said a lot. It is pronounced (KY-tin). Are these not edited?
    nothing special
This book had potential but fell short. The mc is given far too many completely broken abilities and super special items. He is effectively able to learn every ability in the game reguardless of class or race. There are also too many coincidences. A few coincidences are expected in a story but they happen almost constantly in this one. My other concern with the story is that the charcters tend to be completely one dimensional. They either instantly become loyal allies or develope an insane all encompassing hatred of the mc.
The narrator was ok for the most part but kept throwing me off the story with jarring mispronounced words. The most noticeable being how he would slow down mid sentence and say "Don John" instead of dungeon.
    Donjon?
I don't know about everyone else but I'm curious as to what is a Donjon? lol
    Not Bad
I am enjoying the world that Andrew Livadny created for us. You can tell there was a lot of thought and planning that went into creating this world. While I didnt understand were some of the random plot lines were going at the beginning, they tie back into the overall arc.
Overall I found this to be an enjoyable read.

    Publisher's Summary:
    The Empire
A tyranny stretching over thousands of worlds. The grand dreams of the founders are a joke. The Thousand Families, the rulers of the Empire, care nothing for anything save their own power. From the undercity of Earth to the new colonies at the Rim, discontent, anger, and rebellion seethe, but there is no hope of breaking the power of the Empire and freeing the trillions of enslaved humans and aliens.
    The Rebel
Commander Colin Walker believed in the Empire until a treacherous superior officer betrayed him, forcing him to see the true nature of the force he served and his compliancy in terrible crimes. Now Colin has a plan: He and his followers in the Imperial Navy will seize their ships and rebel against the Thousand Families, uniting the thousands of rebel factions under his leadership. Their war will set the galaxy on fire.
    Members Reviews:
A new story and a good start
The plot is interesting. It may take while to warm up to Collin, the main character. The author is making a great effort at building characters - he even builds characters who get killed on the the next page lol. Bringing in the concept of the family 'House' and the Thousand Family rule gives the story an interesting slant as well. Not sure about the narrator however. In some of the battles the author puts us in the heads of the Empire's fleet leader and the Rebel fleet leader and it gets a bit confusing - I had to replay that section a couple times to tell which side's Super Dreadnaught was blown up.
The narrator doesn't excel at differentiating characters very well which contributes to the confusion.
Even so, the story is enjoyable and off to a good start.
A highly enjoyable listen that is recommended
The galaxy is tightly controlled by the thousand families, an ultra-wealthy ruling class that only cares for more power and money. The many colonized worlds represent little more than resources and additional wealth and power. If an occupied world becomes more trouble than they're worth, the ruling families will crush it with their overwhelming military might, wiping out all life if necessary.
Commander Colin Walker and a handful of military leaders have had enough, vowing to bring democracy to the galaxy. If they fail, their treason can only be met with execution. On the other hand, if they succeed, the economic system everyone depends on could devolve into chaos, driving trillions into poverty and desperation.
Democracy's Right is a political, sci-fi novel with a military action base. It is exciting and thought provoking with a taste of ancient Rome in its theme. How does a ruling class control its empire from far away with long delays in communication and travel? The heroes are likable and the bad guys are hateful, the listener has no trouble choosing sides.
There is plenty of action to satisfy most military and sci-fi fans and a political economic background to make the struggle feel realistic. The characters are believable with enough human flaws to make them relatable. Definitely worth a listen.
The story is performed by Johnny Heller. His distinctive voice is easy on the ears and creates the proper mood of the novel. The characters are easily discernible and feel appropriate to their personalities.

    Publisher's Summary:
Unlike in real life, Max is pretty good at playing games, so when a new limited-time dungeon opens up in the virtual reality game he plays, boasting a huge cash prize, Max knows he needs to try and complete it if he wants to be able to pay rent this month.
Fortunately, the only guild strong enough to attempt to take it on before the timer runs out needs a tank.
There's just one problem, he's never played with them before, and even if he convinces the Sisters of Artemis to let him join in time to tank the dungeon and collect the prize money, if they wipe, it's all over.
That would be bad because without that prize money, both he and his baby sister will be sleeping in a cardboard box under a bridge, and Max really hates sleeping in cardboard boxes. Been there, done that, sold the T-shirt.

    Excellent gamer story
This is a really enjoyable and exciting audiobook. I'm not a gamer but I found this story made me want to be one. I'm sure if you like teamwork fantasy combat games you will adore this story. The duel tale of immersion in a virtual reality game, where quests can be undertaken, friends made and money gained, and the real word, where the physically disabled are struggling to survive, kept me totally entranced. Max is a great character, confined to a wheelchair and taking care of his equally disabled sister in real life. He needs money in order for them to survive and gaming is the most viable source. In the game he is a excellent tank and team leader, he has built a team that he is starting to consider as friends (some a bit more than just friends) and they are leading the game in newly released quest. The narrator does an excellent job, I think it is some of his best narration work. He draws you into the story and makes both the fantasy and the real life seen alive and captivating. You soon become invested in Max's life both in reality and in the game. I really enjoyed both the story and the narration and I look forward to listening to the next in the series.
So glad I gave this a chance!
So I heard about this book from a friend and his thoughts on this weren't terrible but he couldn't get over the weirdness of not being able to speak about real life in this book. So I came in with lower expectations than I might have otherwise. His issues with the book were addressed if only in passing which makes me wonder if he missed that paragraph. So yeah it passes that world building requirement at least as far as it goes with me.
I was also surprised to find that, while this isn't the most in depth lit rpg book as far as numbers go, this has one of the more "cute" romances I've seen in these books at least as far as it was allowed to bloom in this first book. I'm looking forward to seeing where it goes later. Especially with the how main character's real life circumstances are arranged.
If there's something I'd love to see more of here it's the characters in the book. They're so likable that you just want to know more about them but the main hook of the book kinda makes it hard for anything past the surface level. I'm interested in seeing how the author works around that little fact as it's clear there's some real chemistry between all of them.

A great story but that cliffhanger!
    4.5 out of 5 stars
Sanctuary was a really enjoyable book. A.R. Shaw really knows how to write. She had me on the edge of my seat for more than half of this book. And the action never really stopped. I thought for sure that now that things were a little safer that the series would slow down a bit, but I couldnt have been more wrong. Things arent safe and they are only getting more and more dangerous. I felt like one of the characters of the book. Just when I thought the snow and cold were going to stop, it gets colder and snowier.
The overall premise of this book felt incredibly real. I think that Shaw really did a lot of thinking and some research into what would happen (or what has happened) when things really start to take a turn. The flashback scene and the scene with the woman in the road were easily some of the most memorable in this series. And I can tell that some research went into the method of transportation that is utilized later in the book.
The first book in the Surrender the Sun series easily took one of my top books of 2016, and I hope that Shaw releases book three on audiobook in 2017. I dont know if I can wait any longer to find out exactly what happens to everyone that Ive grown to love throughout books one and two.
Overall, a great book with a nasty cliffhanger at the end. Just be prepared for that, it caught me completely off guard. I can tell you this, A.R. Shaw is a name to watch out for when it comes to new and unique Post-Apocalyptic stories.
I will still round up to five stars, but this book lost a half star on the aggressive cliffhanger. I dont like them but have come to expect them, especially in books that are part of a series. Ive noticed lately that more and more books are series based with an unknown number of books in them. I usually like knowing this is book 2 of X before diving in, but my love of all things post-apocalypse has lead me down a path into the darkness of the unknown series length.
I received a free copy of this audiobook which has not affected my review at all.

really different take on the end of the human race. I've listened to hundreds of post apocalyptic books over the last few years and the author is quickly becoming one of my favorite. I would tell you my favorite part but I don't want to give away anything . the narrator Kevin pierce can bring a story to life like no other
    Another home run!

    Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
The best-selling author of The Small Backs of Children offers a vision of our near extinction and a heroine - a reimagined Joan of Arc - poised to save a world ravaged by war, violence, and greed and forever change history in this provocative new novel.
In the near future, world wars have transformed the earth into a battleground. Fleeing the unending violence and the planet's now-radioactive surface, humans have regrouped on a mysterious platform known as CIEL, hovering over their erstwhile home. The changed world has turned evolution on its head: The surviving humans have become sexless, hairless, pale-white creatures floating in isolation, inscribing stories upon their skin.
Out of the ranks of the endless wars rises Jean de Men, a charismatic and bloodthirsty cult leader who turns CIEL into a quasicorporate police state. A group of rebels unite to dismantle his iron rule - galvanized by the heroic song of Joan, a child warrior who possesses a mysterious force that lives within her and communes with the earth. When de Men and his armies turn Joan into a martyr, the consequences are astonishing. And no one - not the rebels, Jean de Men, or even Joan herself - can foresee the way her story and unique gift will forge the destiny of an entire world for generations.
A riveting tale of destruction and love found in the direst of places - even at the extreme end of posthuman experience - Lidia Yuknavitch's The Book of Joan raises questions about what it means to be human, the fluidity of sex and gender, and the role of art as a means for survival.

A beautifully woven, completely original dystopia!
unlike anyother post-apocalyptic experience, dimensional, multifaceted characters, mercurial twists, and a celebration of earth's energy!
As riveting as it is horrifying
Once I got started on this I couldn't stop. I cared about the characters and so just had to follow them as they struggled to navigate a world of increasingly surrealistic horror. Not for the faint hearted!
Why I listen more than read
I used to read a book a week. Now I listen to at least two a week. The Book of Joan is a big reason why. It is very well written. The story line is well crafted and the performance is exquisite. It is as though Yuknavitch and Sands are of the same mind. Any performance I would of been able to do in my own mind would of pailed in comparison.
Profound, prescient, powerful reimagining of Joan
If you could sum up The Book of Joan in three words, what would they be?
An Immersive, inventive adventure in a future distopian society, rich in finely drawn characters and deeply engaging relationships
What other book might you compare The Book of Joan to and why?
I'd compare it with THE SMALL BACKS OF CHILDREN, also by Lidia Yuknavitch, because it again portrays in intimate, heartaching detail the cost war exacts of society's children.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    Yes!
    You must
    No words
You must listen to it. You must think. One of the most powerful books I've read in years

    Publisher's Summary:
Not far in the future, the seas have risen, and the central latitudes are emptying. But it's still a good time to be rich in San Francisco, where weapons drones patrol the skies to keep out the multitudinous poor.
Irina isn't rich, not quite, but she does have an artificial memory that gives her perfect recall and lets her act as a medium between her various employers and their AIs, which are complex to the point of opacity. It's a good gig, paying enough for the annual visits to the Mayo Clinic that keep her from aging.
Kern has no such access; he's one of the many refugees in the sprawling drone-built favelas on the city's periphery, where he lives like a monk, training relentlessly in martial arts, scraping by as a thief and an enforcer. Thales is from a different world entirely - the mathematically inclined scion of a Brazilian political clan, he's fled to LA after the attack that left him crippled and his father dead.
A ragged stranger accosts Thales and demands to know how much he can remember. Kern flees for his life after robbing the wrong mark. Irina finds a secret in the reflection of a laptop's screen in her employer's eyeglasses. None is safe as they're pushed together by subtle forces that stay just out of sight.
Vivid, tumultuous, and propulsive, Void Star is Zachary Mason's mind-bending follow-up to his critically acclaimed novel The Lost Books of the Odyssey.

    if you're That Guy
Starkly beautiful cyberpunk meditations to contemplate over red wine at dusk. If reading that sentence makes you want to punch someone in the throat even as you can begrudgingly relate, buy it.
    Beautifully written sci-fi masterfully performed
Would you consider the audio edition of Void Star to be better than the print version?
With the different narrators each performing a different POV character, it made differentiating the different story lines easier. In the book, chapters are generally less than 10 pages long and characters can change rather rapidly. Hard to judge if it was better than reading the book, but the production value was high and I know the narration heightened the experience of certain scenes in the book.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Void Star?
The ending, especially in relation to Kern, is very satisfying and truly enriches everything that preceded it. Much of the prose is very beautiful and reminds of some of the best and classic books I've read in the past. Sometimes it feels more like poetry but it fits just perfect.
Which character as performed by the narrators was your favorite?
Irina, performed by Cassandra Campbell, and Kern, performed by Michael Braun, stood out most to me. Braun perfectly captures Kern's more frenetic violent story while also being able to relate the character's innocence and naivety. Campbell is doing most of the heavy lifting story-wise, but her performance really is beautiful and matches the prose very well while keeping an edge in more tense scenes.
    Any additional comments?
I don't usually reread books, but I think I'll be revisiting this one. I'll definitely be picking up a hard copy.
    so much potential
seemed to just drag on and on the story is actually really good but its split between three points of view that switched way to soon between them to fast and the narrators who I like seemed to talk like ..

2 HR STORY STRETCHED TO 11 1/2 HRS, NO CORPS IN IT
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Someone interested in a view of the effects of being stuck with taking in a bunch of foreign refugees who dont want to integrate.
I've liked most of the CORPS series. Pretty much only tied to the series by Earth's demise, no Marine Corps involvement. This was basically a maybe 2 hour story stretched out to 11 1/2 hours. Nuttall had a story, didn't know where to put it & was boring as heck for all but a few minutes.
What could Christopher G. Nuttall have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Kept it out of the Empire's Corps series. Reduced it to a short story
    Which scene was your favorite?
About 10 1/2 hours into the book, cops were allowed to carry firearms & use them to eliminate the main threat.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
    Very disappointed.
    Any additional comments?
I'll be asking for my money back on this one. If the series continues, I hope it stays based on the marines coping with the loss of the empire.
Only for die hards I think
CG Nuttall is an autobuy for me. Love Warspite and Empire Core series, but as this is one of those offworlds stories (not Commonwealth) I think you can skip it. Not sure that it advances the universe as much as some of the other side stories have and frankly the overall story dragged- unusually for a Nuttall storyline. It does tackle a very relevant social political problem we are all dealing with- so the exploration of theory was interesting.
This may be one book too many
I've listened to each book in the series and enjoyed most. This book discusses an interesting problem, but belongs in another series than the EMPIRE'S CORPS. A series relating to specific problems such as cultural misunderstandings would be a powerful starting point for similar idea exchanges based on today's conflicts.
Ham-Handed Politics out of place in Series
Christopher G Nuttal clearly wanted to write story about the dangers of Immigrants. Meet the Forsakers, society briefly mentioned in earlier parts in the series now more fleshed out. Imagine a Muslim version of the Amish described by Anne Coulter, and you are pretty much there.
Look. . . I get that there are libertarian undertones through the series, and I never found it off putting. Good gravy though, this story is as ham-fisted as anything I've read by John Ringo, and felt really really out of place in the series.

    The Signal Was Received
Ten years after a deep-space transmission was broadcast from a futuristic citadel hidden in the Arctic ice, Jon Hudson finds himself in a position beyond comprehension. His days of lazy Sasquatch hunting on behalf of the DHS' Fusion Center-Paranormal (FC-P) have been a fading memory since the appearance of Nemesis, the goddess of vengeance, reborn through genetic tinkering. Now he longs for those quiet days once more.
    The Aeros Have Returned
Facing down giant kaiju has become almost commonplace for Hudson and the FC-P, whom he regards as his family, but the threat now facing them is global. An alien race known as the Aeros, summoned to Earth 10 years ago, have arrived in orbit, hell-bent on destroying their ancient enemy, the Ferox, along with all of humanity...in all dimensions of reality.
    All Earths Will Be Destroyed
Facing off against an invasion of city-destroying kaiju, a massive mothership and an assault in a parallel world, Hudson must bolster the FC-P's ranks. Joined by Milos "Cowboy" Vesely, Hudson must journey through alternate dimensions to gather a one-of-a-kind legion of defenders, including a smart-mouthed soldier, a woman who can animate the lifeless, a time traveler, a robot-man, a powerful king, and an assassin who can slip between frequencies of reality.
With Project Legion, Jeremy Robinson has created an epic series finale, bringing together characters and plot elements from more than a dozen different novels and series. The result is a crossover novel ten years in the making, the likes of which have never been seen outside of comic books and movies like Captain America: Civil War.
Project Legion is an apocalyptic end to the first story arc of the bestselling Kaiju Thriller series: The Nemesis Saga.

    Perfect
Only thing I have to say is this has became my new favorite book :)
    Great story, great narration.
I hate that we may never get another Nemesis book. But, man what a ride. A fitting end.
    ALL THE FEELS!
Damn you Jeremy Robinson for making me laugh and cry and then laugh again during this amazing book! this was by far my favorite of all of your books! Thank you so much for sharing it with us and I hope this doesn't mean and end to the series. I look forward to listening to many more of your works of art!
Classic Jeremy Robinson with a Grand Finale
A master storyteller, Robinson does not disappoint here. The perfection is in his merging of simultaneous events - in the line made famous on the old TV show, The A-Team, "I love it when a plan comes together!"
Fun from across the Robinson multiverse!
    Any additional comments?
If you've followed the Nemesis series through until this book, you're certainly a fan of Robinson's kaiju novels. In that case, Project Legion is another killer addition to the series. But if you're a fan of Robinson's prodigious and diverse catalog of fiction, this book is filled, cover to cover, with endless treats. If you're not on your toes, you're certain to see at least six characters from other non-kaiju books. But if you're really paying attention, you'll catch references to places, events, and many, many more characters.
I would list them all, but that would fall into the realm of spoilers.
Long story short, this book is a thrilling adventure and unique fun spanning the entirety of the Robinson multiverse.

The second book of Terra Ignota, a political SF epic of extraordinary audacity
In a future of near-instantaneous global travel, of abundant provision for the needs of all, a future in which no one living can remember an actual war, a long era of stability threatens to come to an abrupt end.
For known only to a few, the leaders of the great Hives, nations without fixed location, have long conspired to keep the world stable, at the cost of just a little blood. A few secret murders, mathematically planned. So that no faction can ever dominate, and the balance holds. And yet the balance is beginning to give way.
Mycroft Canner, convict, sentenced to wander the globe in service to all, knows more about this conspiracy the than he can ever admit. Carlyle Foster, counselor, sensayer, has secrets as well, and they burden Carlyle beyond description. And both Mycroft and Carlyle are privy to the greatest secret of all: Bridger, the child who can bring inanimate objects to life.
Shot through with astonishing invention, Seven Surrenders is the next movement in one of the great SF epics of our time.

    Egad!
Wonderful! Possibly the single best series of speculative fiction I've ever read. Utterly different from my other top picks, but definitely jostling for #1.
The change in narrators is jarring, but give yourself time to adjust. Smith brings a nuance to the performance that I don't remember being present in Mays, though both are excellent.
    AWFUL Performance, Thought-provoking story
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I can't recommend this book to anyone; the narrator is atrocious. He croaks and growls. He uses incomprehensible accents to denote different characters and inexplicably adds confusing pauses and timing choices between words. Just awful, awful.
What other book might you compare Seven Surrenders to and why?
This is the second in a series and matches the first (Too Like the Lightning) with a variety of speakers, and is in the style of spoken-word history.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of T. Ryder Smith?
    Jefferson Mays.
Do you think Seven Surrenders needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
Can't say as yet. Still considering.
    Any additional comments?
This book needs to be re-recorded with a different narrator. Since it's a series, they should get the narrator for the first one, Jefferson Mays, whose voice and talents are quite well suited to this text.
Good story, narrator not anywhere near first part
Sorry, the voice acting sounds like a bunch of kids half the time, wish they'd kept the narrator from the first book.
    A masterpiece.
For me, a life long lover of the sheer originality and depth that can come out of the SF genre, this will be one of those series that I come back to again and again throughout my life.
An engaging story, fully-fleshed characters, a utterly unique and deep world, and the most complex and directly astounding first-person perspective and thematic presentation style I've read.
Whatever you do next, Madam Palmer, I will be an eager reader for life.
I was slightly disappointed they'd switched narrators between the books, but by an hour in I was already sold on Smith. Make sure you read Too Like the Lightning first!
give the new narrator time. it's amazing
once you are used to the new narrator you will realize this book is a great continuation of the series.

Keep your head down. Do what you're told. It's easier that way.
Walter Lawrence Baucom is used to the troops that patrol Agrarian District 89. He grew up with the sight of Chinese and Russian soldiers, right alongside the American ones. They are the Coalition. "The Three Brothers", they call themselves. They claim that they are there to help. And he thinks that if he doesn't rock the boat, then they will never have a reason to break in his door and disappear him, like they did to his brother.
But when a Chinese captain is kidnapped by resistance members, Walter is suddenly thrust into a fight he never wanted. A fight where there are many sides, but very few allies. As things in District 89 quickly spiral out of control and the borders are closed by Coalition troops, Walter will have to make a decision: What is he willing to fight for?
    His life? His freedom?
    His family?

I may just be a simple knocker, but...
This book is fantastic! Easily my favorite book of 2017 so far. Glad to see the author gets the terminology right throughout the book. Many kudos. After Wolves, this book cements D.J. Molles as one of my favorite authors. Highly recommended.
    SO THE WIND BLOWS
HE HAD GROWN MENTALLY FAT ON THE COMFORT OF SOCIETY
I love the concept of this book, just as in Philip K. Dick's, THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE. This is a future where The United States has allowed China and Russia to come into our country and help police it. We are not told exactly what happened, but it is obvious that these countries were invited in. Molles gives us a great comparison that explains how this could happen. He talks about frogs. If you put a frog in a pot of boiling water, he will try to escape, but if you put him in a pot of cool water and than slowly raise the temperature, he will allow you to boil him alive.
It may seem impossible, but here in Missouri, we have allowed the Chinese to buy up a lot of our farm land and they are chopping down the hard woods and sending them back to China. It was a big issue in the last election. I also believe that China owns most of our debt? It is improbable, but not impossible.
YOU DON'T HAVE TO GO WITH THE WIND, YOU CAN RUN AGAINST IT.
Because, I find the subject matter so interesting, I bought the book. Why the low rating you ask? In this book like so many other books written by Molles, I find he has a good idea to start with, that he is a good word smith, but that his books usually end up with wild chase scenes and lose their structure. In this book, after taking time to set up an interesting universe and giving us a good character, he then has the character running around accomplishing nothing. Their is a several hours long chase scene, where the reader does not know where the character is running to. The book has a good opening, in which we get to see things through the eyes of a genetically advanced Chinese Solider, but after the opening scene that is all we get. Even though Vaughn Heppner is not the word smith Molles is, I like his invasion series better, due to Heppner giving us the story through the eyes of the bad guys, as well as the good guys.
Rummel does a fine job reading this.
    Great story and excellent narration!
I couldn't stop listening D.J. Molles is very descriptive in his writing and Christian Rummel brings it all together with his Narration.
