great story!

I am really enjoying the series, and am looking forward to the next installment. The author has managed to mix historical sailing ship warfare with a space yarn and a current understanding of the trials and tribulations a warrior faces after battle. H e also has created a strong female lead with out diminishing the male characters around her. For that, most of all, I say thank you....

Book four of this series is again excellent. In this book, Alexis Carew is in command of her own ship. Of course, she has been taken command before, in combat. This time, she was given command. Her crew was not what she is use to. She has to work hard to gain their loyalty, while accomplishing her mission. Alexis Carew is my hero!

What did you like best about this story?

How Alexis takes a horrible crew and starts reforging them. With fits and starts it's a messy process. I like that Alexis is not perfect and her PTSD is showing through. She is still way too hard on herself and I'd like to see her grow a bit more in that area. I really like how she questions her own feelings and censors herself. I like how she makes hard decisions.

Have you listened to any of Elizabeth Kletts other performances before? How does this one compare?

Ms. Klett is one of the few female readers who pulls off male characters well. I love her British accents and can imagine anyone taking over the series.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

A Ship of Her Own. Alexis is on her own and it's so wonderful how she asserts authority.

The story is well written and Elizabeth Klett's voice fits this story perfectly. We wait somewhat patiently for the next adventure Lt. Carew and the crew of HMS Nightingale will find themselves in.

Touching

These books are incredibly well written. It makes you part of the crew of the roci in a way few writers are able to.

This time around the story just stalls

What disappointed you about Babylon's Ashes?

There are plot holes and the way characters behave is really weird. Nobody appears to be really angry/hurt/traumatised about the attack on earth. That just doesn't make sense. The story went nowhere this time. It feels like the authors are stalling.

What was most disappointing about James S. A. Coreys story?

I was missing all the ingredients that make The Expanse a great series for me, like a good Holden story (he feels left out this time), great action writing (too sparse) and alien stuff/new worlds/new technologies/mysterie development.

The space battles where OK, Bobby was OK, the Prax and Vandercaust bits where good, but it fails to save the book for me.

What didnt you like about Jefferson Mayss performance?

He has a nice and consistent voice to listen to, but he's not my favourite. Some of the Belter slang is weird to listen to, it's supposed to sound foreign but the way Jefferson May pronounces them is weird. I didn't recognise the German or Dutch in it for instance. It must have been really hard to do, reading a boring story with characters speaking a self-invented language half of the time.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Babylon's Ashes?

We got even more Marko this time (the blandest villain character ever), a meek Avasarala (!) and boring details about the struggles of Micio Pa. I would have cut a lot, if not most of it.

James S. A. Corey is back and better than ever. The authors are changing their narrative style a little by telling the story from every relevant angle making this a complex but very exciting story! Everything we love about the expanse and a little more.

Anti-climactic end

Amazing characters, but the ending wasn't that good. It was too abrupt and ambiguous I think.

Not one of the best ones in the series.

I was exited to listen to this book, because the previous book left one quit the cliffhanger. I enjoyed the book, but some character chapters just were not interesting.

I could only skim they the previous title as the narration was horrible. Wasn't sure if I would be able to continue wit the series. Thankfully we got Jeffery Kafer back and all is as it should be In the cluster. Oh and the story was top notch. I am excited to see where this goes.

Thank you for bringing Mr. Kafer back to narrate. He brings the true nature of each character to life. No disrespect to the narrator of Escalation but he made all of the characters whiny brats. Welcome back to the Frontier Mr. Kafer

another great book in the series

another great book by Ryk Brown, also extremely happy they used Jeffrey Kiefer again, great hearing the voices of characters I'm used to from the first 15 books. they really should rerecord the last book.

Engaging

I have enjoyed this series and am very happy with finding the author Ryk Brown. He has become one of the science fiction authors I now routinely read.

This book is more of a filler telling about what has happened since Nathan Scott turned himself over to the Jung for trial and the renewal of the attacks by the Jung in the last book. In this book, we learn about the break-up of the Alliance. The story primarily follows Jessica, Josh, Loki, General Tellis and Admiral Dumar.

Jessica joins with General Tellis and team on a new home world near the Coninar sector. Jessicas entire family has moved with her. Under Telliss training, Jessica is controlling her anger. Admiral Dumar has retired and living on Coninar. Josh and Loki are with General Tellis. We are introducing to Connor Tuplo, who is a clone of Nathan Scott.

The book is well written and the plot twists and turns. The pace is fast. There are no space battles, but there is the rescue of the Dumar family, Lokis family and the clone doctors along with lots of suspense. Mainly the book centers on the building relationship between Jessica and Tellis. I cannot wait for the next book in the series.

The book is eight hours long. Jeffrey Kafer does an excellent job narrating the series. Kafer is a voice-over artist and award-winning audiobook narrator.

Great narration, decent story

Ocean of Storms is a well-paced sci-fi action novel that puts America against China in another space race. The main idea that drives the story is certainly interesting. While it has been done before, I liked the way the authors chose to spin it out this time.

Ocean of Storms gets enough points for sheer entertainment value to negate some of the unbelievability issues. This is very much one of those books that youd expect to see as a Syfy movie. Maybe even a little two part mini-series. If you think too hard about it, itll crash and burn, but if you sit back and enjoy the ride, youll have a blast.

One of the things that I just could not believe is that Americans couldnt easily recreate the technology we used to get to the moon. As famous as those endeavors were, and as much as weve built off of them since then, this is almost impossible to believe. It is a major hiccup in the story. The second hiccup is where the EMP basically only slaps at technology instead of giving it a swift thump. My understanding is that while EMPs arent quite as dangerous as whats typically displayed, neither are they something that provides only a minor inconvenience. There are other issues, but these were the two that really bothered me.

Luke Daniels is the biggest part of why I still hold this book in affection. He did a great job narrating the various characters and definitely brought them to life. They might not have been the most well-rounded individuals but they were still fun to listen to. (Actually, theyre rather one dimensional, but I still liked them!) I initially had rated this book higher than what I eventually settled on. I did it because he made me enjoy the story so much that I didnt ever actually think about it. After Id disengaged my happy story geek-out though, the issues with Ocean of Storms kept rising to the surface.

With some tweaks to the story, Ocean of Storms could easily go from being a fun read to being a good one.

Just not very good

I think the author just read a book on the Apollo program and that is about the extent of his knowledge on the subject of space travel. Things could simply not be done the way he suggests - totally and utterly impossible. Read this only if you have no technical knowledge about the space program, if you have any such knowledge, the book will upset you time after time. Characters are stereotypical on steroids and not well developed.

The bottom line is that it is not well written and boring and disrupted by tech errors.

Still compelling but ...

The story continued in a fast-paced manner jumping from new revelations to near-death situations as it unfolded. For now, it appears that the love triangle situation seems to have been decided but left unclear as to if it is truly settled.

I found the whole torture sequences a bit outlandish in that after only a few tries, the Xiiginn get angry and give up. Then, based on such few attempts, decide that humans can resist their attempts to get information from them. Either their prior species were weak-willed or they are too temperamental themselves to fully test the extremes of torture.

Then there was the incident where Boxen officer shoots his commanding Admiral officer to prevent him from staying and defending their asteroid station so as to save him and the rest of the admirals soldiers, while shocked, allowed to occur without arresting the lower ranked officer. If this is the way they run their military, is it any wonder the Boxen are losing their battles?

Then there's a hint that Kaylan's ability to perform remote viewing may also give her precognition capabilities. This is where the SciFi aspects of the story veer ever-so-close to the fantasy realm.

With all that said, I still found the story quite entertaining and enthusiastically recommend to anyone who are interested in an exciting series.

Note: Each book is still too short.

Loved it!

I put this on straight after the second book and it didn't disappoint. (after reading some reviews about the books not being worth a credit) I honestly have to say 'what' ? Do you guys have any idea what goes into writing something like this, let alone the audio production!

So for a credit, yes this series is well worth spending it on. Don't let the others put you off.

This part of the series has to be by far the best.

Same Great Kobani -- Different Aliens!

Conflict and Empire picks up where Forged left off -- with our intrepid Kobani facing the prospect of war with yet another murderous group of high handed aliens determined to conquer humanity. (You'd think it would get old -- nope!)

In Forged, the Empire invaded a new Federation colony, and in turn, the Kobani attacked them in retribution. Now the Empire is planning an invasion to teach the humans a lesson, and what follows is a war with the Empire's security force, an ape-like species called the Ragnar. Of course, the Ragnar have no idea what they're up against when it comes to war with humans. Fun times ensue!

The Kobani have learned that the Empire has weapons that are particularly deadly to their special nervous system, one that could eventually bring the Federation to a painful end, so they waste no time looking for a genetic mod to counteract the threat, but the book ends before that particular plot point is fleshed out. While Confict feels a little like the first half of a longer book, it's so well done that I found it hugely entertaining. If I have a complaint it's that book 7 isn't out yet!

And let's face it -- no matter how long Steve's books are, I'm always sad when they end.

FYI: I'm usually not a fan of straight up military sci fi, (with a few exceptions). But when the 'military' is a bunch of scientists and spacers learning on the fly, it feels different and wide open with smart possibilities. In the hands of Steve Bennett, the wars feel more like something out of Hogan's Heroes or Mash, than Patton, so I enjoy the books immensely. The military strategies are well thought out, entertaining and satisfying, and the tech is awesome, and left me wondering whether our military may have missed out on an innovative potential general in Stephen W. Bennett!

And innovation really is Steve's strength -- and why I keep coming back for more.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Lot of back story with a bit of action. The next book sounds like a doozey. Its going to be some great action I can hear it now. I cannot wait.

Solid Book. Really expands on the lore well

Zahn does a great job here of expanding the lore. If you were at all curious about what happens after Legacy of the Void here it is. Zahn also gives a lot of depth to characters that you usually just control and put to there deaths in the game.

Only part I didn't like is that Artanis felt a little out of character then he was in Legacy of the Void. All in all of you like StarCraft read this.

Another awesome story by Timothy Zahn.

Being a fan of both StarCraft and of Timothy Zahn, I chose this book with high expectations and they were very well met. I have played all three StarCraft II games so I am very familiar with their plot lines. It was so much fun to read an exciting story that picks up after the games and continues on with another adventure in that universe. Here we are introduced to new characters (as well as a few old ones) that take us on an adventure with great dialog, plenty of action, and still keeps you guessing until the very end. I couldn't stop listening as the performance by Christopher was so engrossing. His voice characterizations fit perfectly with the mood of the story and the characters as I imagined them.

Although this book will stand alone as a complete story, its even better knowing how it fits in with the rest of the StarCraft universe. If you haven't played the games, you can go on YouTube and watch the full video cinematics for the StarCraft II games to understand the previous stories. Blizzard created great stories and an amazing universe, so they set a very high bar.

This book takes the StarCraft story to new heights. FIVE STARS all the way around. (I've already pre-ordered his next book "Thrawn" - one of my favorite characters of all time.)

if you are not already a starcraft fan, this may be hard to follow. still as good story though.

With Sincerity, this was a let down...

This book was written with many technical descriptions for the three races that govern the known galaxy of Starcraft. What it lacks entirely is a love for it.

Ok, but not the best of this series

I have previously read and am a huge fan of, all of the MEG books by Steve Alten and thought this time around I would try the audio versions. I'm a big fan of the series but sadly this book is my least favorite of them all. I can't stand reality TV so all the parts taking place with that group of people I did not enjoy. Actually found myself cheering for the shark because I didn't like any of those characters. In all honesty I didn't like any of the secondary characters they meet in this book. I still enjoy Jonas and Mac and their families but there was nothing likable about any of the people they met along the way. I was glad when people got eaten by the Meg! The end of the book does get much better though so that's what always keeps me going through this novel. All the rest of the series are amazing! I highly recommend reading them all, this one just happens to be my least favorite of the lot.

As for the audio vs the actual book... I didn't overly care for this particular narrator. His voice is very gravelly and throaty which made Jonas sound sort of ailing and decrepit all the time. I get that he is older now, but he still manages to kick some ass in this book, so having him sound like an old man didn't seem to match up. Also when he did voices for women or the kids it just never felt right. I think this narrator would be better for a detective novel maybe. Just my opinion.

I didnt care for the narrator for this book. The voice too gravely, he may be better suited for detective or mob stories.

a decent entry into the mag series

I enjoyed the book, but to many subplots for my taste. overall it's an ok read.
