    Publisher's Summary:
It's the year 2277. For 50 years, Earth has received mysterious data transmissions from random locations in deep space. The streams include advanced technology, allowing humans to achieve faster-than-light travel virtually overnight. As we prepare to take our first tentative steps into interstellar space, we know almost nothing about our alien benefactors, and their motivations remain unexplained.
While completing their shakedown cruise, Captain Tom Prescott and the crew of the first Terran Fleet Command starship, TFS Ingenuity, stumble into a first contact situation. They learn that Earth is not the first civilization granted access to the stars before their time - and how this Faustian gift has inevitably led to centuries of interstellar war. Humanity's existence hangs in the balance as a powerful alliance assembles a preemptive military strike, believing it to be their only option to protect themselves...from us. Prescott and his small, initially unarmed starship must serve as our only line of defense. Ingenuity is our only hope.

    More please
    No spoilers here.
The Good: This is an interesting way to look at first contact. TFS ingenuity is an action packed thrill ride. The space battles are not the sole focus of the story like many of the genre. I found the plot twist interesting and the characters fleshed out just enough. I did listen to this book straight through and enjoyed it very much. I am VERY eagerly awaiting the next installment. As always Jeffrey Kafer is an elite narrator. Well done again.
The Bad: Not much really. Just that this is a bit short of a story for my liking. There are many opportunities to expand on events in this story. I would like to have had another couple of hours of story. The cliffhanger at the end upset me as I had more lawn to mow and no sequel to listen to!
All things considered, a very good book.
Great Book!! Excellent story. WAY to short. WAIT..
What did you like best about this story?
nicely conceived plot and universe idea. Nicely done
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    Yes
    Any additional comments?
I really enjoyed this book but it is way way way too short. Particularly since there is nothing else supporting it. I recommend the author support his books with more titles before releasing a story that just cuts off...literally....mid stream. While I loved it I am very frustrated right now not knowing how long the wait will be or if I will even remember to see if new ones are out.
    TFS Theseus
Loved the story line and the overall book. Waiting for book 2 TFS Theseus. I already have the written copy, hope the see the audible version soon.
Good, but Short Buildup for a Continuing Series.
I was impressed with the writing and plot of this book, but it was a little on the short side and obviously meant as the buildup for a series.
The Terran Fleet Ship Ingenuity is the first starship constructed by humanity. It was made possible, in large part, because of the technological knowledge bestowed upon earth by a mysterious alien benefactor race. Little is known about the aliens themselves, but transmissions containing advanced technology and knowledge have been received by earth governments for decades. There has been much speculation as to the motives of this race...

If you love Foundation, you will LOVE this gem!
Like Isaac Asimov's Foundation, Legend of the Galactic Heroes is an outstanding science fiction epic. Even though this is only the first book in the series, I eagerly await the next installment!
Legend of The Galactic Heroes Finally Translated!
The first book of Tanaka's space epic did not disappoint. The translation and narration were superb. I really have been waiting over a decade for these novels to be translated into English and it was so worth the wait. Bring on book two!
Sensational; Equal to the Fabulous Anime
The world-building is somewhat reaching in places but it, and the characters, are damn wonderful.
Amazing. Tim Gerard Reynolds is a saint with these
This book is fantastic. Tim Gerard Reynolds really pull you into the world. Both main characters are portrayed so well. The world is engaging. 10/10
Kind of like a dull history book
I have always been intrigued by this anime/manga/series, because it seemed to be the biggest epic space opera that had never been brought over to US shores. And since it came out back in the '80s, I knew the animation quality of the anime probably wouldn't hold up to modern standards. Therefore when I found out about this new English publication of the novels, I was cautiously excited to find out what all the fuss was about.
If you have read a lot of space opera or military sci-fi, you're either going to find you like this series because it tries to marry both genres, or you're going to be disappointed because it fails to deliver the depth into either one that you may be used to. This novel stays at a very high level throughout most of the book, delivering hundreds of years of history and conflict almost like a Wikipedia entry, while glossing over details of battles involving tens of thousands of starships as though you're watching everything on a strategic starmap. Because of such a huge scale, and a large cast of characters, we don't get to see them developed in detail much other than to establish a few stereotypes and certain likes/dislikes and character traits. Even though the novel eventually focuses down onto the two protagonists, we don't really get any sense of what their lives are actually like. Everything is done within the context of driving ahead this massive historical machine.
There are parts of the novel that are certainly enjoyable, and a lot of the tactical combat techniques are interesting, reminiscent of Jack Campbell's "Lost Fleet" engagements (although still falling far short). However, one problem that keeps repeating itself is that the book portrays all the establishment leaders on both sides of the war as utter imbeciles.

    The Back Story on Stalker
This is book eleven in the Empire Corp Series. The series opened with Edward Stalker and his company being deployed to Avalon. In this episode Nuttall has decided to give us the back story of Stalkers early life. Stalker was born on Earth in the under city, the home of the poor. He was disgusted with school and ready to graduate; his brother was attempting to recruit Stalker into a gang. Stalker decided he wanted out; to get away, move someplace. From school he finds information regarding military recruiters, he reads about the various services and thinks this might be a way out for him. The family was eating dinner one evening when a gang raids the apartment and kills everyone but Stalker. Stalker then heads to the Marine recruiting center and joins. Nuttall proceeds to tell the story of Stalker life in basic training, the Slaughterhouse and to his first deployment.
Nuttall is constantly improving his writing skills; it is enjoyable to watch the development of a writer. Nuttall has created some very interesting characters and its pleasant to learn the back story of the key people. The story is a straight forward basic training type of story with suspense and action along with some humor. Jeffrey Kafer does an excellent job narrating this series.
    I just don't like pre-quels.
The story was good, but it shouldn't have come so late in the series, I keep hoping for a resumption of the original story line, the Battle for Avalon.
Now THIS is what we have been waiting for!
Ooh-rah! Love this addition. This is prequel, but that's just fine since you can't write too much about Ed Stocker. Here's to many more from Avalon and on.
This is back to the basics, back to what we love about this series, back to the Marines, back to Ed Stocker. Here we get his history with the hardships of boot camp, the grueling ordeal of the Slaughterhouse, and the depressing deployments to try to bring order to a few outposts of civilization. Here is the gluttony of the obese empire and its military, and the first indications of its downfall. All the idiocy and incompetence of the armchair generals, but also the tremendous capacity of the few reasonable, well-trained soldiers who know how things really are and should be. Truly, if not for these last honorable men and women, the empire would surely have completely imploded.
But we have this, one of the last groups to go through the slaughterhouse, then out into the vast reaches of the diseased, dying monstrosity that is humanity.
We know somewhat of these stories since they have been alluded to in the series, but here is the gutsy, gritty, even gory background to Avalon, even before Han, when Ed Stocker grows from boy to man, and decides who and what he will be.

    Back to Barrayar
After more than four years, since Captain Vorpatril's Alliance, Grover Gardner again brings the Vorkosigan saga to life and back to Barrayar in the latest story Gentleman Jole and the Red Queen.
I personally began my adventure with this series starting with the Warriors Apprentice, and couldnt get enough of Miles. Brittle boned, slight of build, and always over-matched physically in a world that prided itself on strength, he wass usually able to overcome all obstacles with his keen intelligent and equally sharp and witty wit. Ive thoroughly enjoyed every audible book in this series that Louis McMaster Bujold has so masterfully crafted and this latest release is no exception. Some of my favorited characters are back, including Miles, but this is a Cordelia story. Throughout the series we got to know her; Shards of Honor and Barrayar, centered on her. We learned of her diverse background growing up on a technological forward thinking planet called Beta Colony that was indirect contrast with the militant hierarchical planet from which her husband came from and which they both resided called Barrayar. Now three years after the death of her famous husband, Aral Vorkosigan, Cordelia, widowed vicereine of Sergyar, is ready to begin a new direction in her life. Insightful and heartwarming, this story does not have a whole lot of action but for those who have been following this series I think you will like this addition.
Grover Gardner, as usual, gives a great performance setting the tone perfectly.
Only for Cordelia fans and, even then, be warned.
    Where is her editor?
No plot, no conflict, minimal tension (either emotionally or romantically), and she creates events that happened decades before in the series that go against the characters' natures. I kept waiting for something exciting to happen, some difficulty for the characters to overcome. There isn't even any romance tension, which could have saved the book. According to the story, they're basically just re-kindling a relationship, so there's no 'falling in love' process and no wondering if/when they'll declare their love and consummate the relationship.

    Publisher's Summary:
Now a celebrated war hero, Captain Kat Falcone is back at the helm of HMS Lightning...and up against near-impossible odds. After an ill-timed outburst almost ends her career, Kat is handed command of a deep-strike mission into enemy space. The objective is to gather intelligence and distract the hostile Theocracy while the Commonwealth prepares its counteroffensive.
The chances for success are slim - and for survival even slimmer.
Armed with a ragtag fleet of outdated starships, a few loyal officers, and a skeleton crew of refugees, Kat knows the Royal Navy expects her to fail. But failure almost certainly means death - or worse, as the Theocracy does not treat prisoners kindly. Pitted against the enemy defenses of her old nemesis Admiral Junayd, there is no room for error. And with a spy hidden aboard her ship, Kat will need more than her wits to survive. Can Kat enter the lion's den, strike a blow for the Commonwealth, and escape with her life?

    Fantastic Followup!
Oh my God! The war is ON! This story is a wonderful take on the horrors of war. My only complaint is when narrator is speaking for the X.O., she far too quiet, and since he's a major character, it becomes a real problem when trying to listen.
    Gripping action
This is book two in the Angel in the Whirlwind series about Kat Falcone. Captain Kat Falcone is back in command of HMS Lighting. The mission is a deep strike mission into enemy space to gather intelligence and distract the Theocracy while the Commonwealth prepares a counter offensive. Kat has gained the confidence of King Hadrian, and has been given a brevet rank of Commodore. Her ship HMS Lightening has been newly outfitted but the rest of the ships in her squadron are outdated and understaffed and to top it off there is a spy aboard.
The book is well written and the plot flows smoothly with some exciting twist. The last half of the book has some space battles and Kat adds some captured ships to her fleet. It is obvious that Nuttall is building the base for future books in the series. I am enjoying this series so far. I had less difficulty with the narrator Lauren Ezzo this time; sort of getting use to her style of reading but still do not like the flat dull delivery of some of the characters.
like the book, very similar to honor harrington.
the narrator's range of voices was extremely limited. most of them were either pouty, whiny or nasally. for a military book, it leaves the command presence pretty lacking.
Better than the first of the series
The reader needs to work on her secondary character voices. Sorry was fun, but not great.
listen to the sample before buying
The narrator's natural voice is awesome but character voices (especially males) are really quite terrible. It ends up being quite a distraction.

Good follow up from Book 1. it was hard to get used to the new narrator for the first several chapters.... but I eventually got through it.
    A fan....
EMP : equipping modern patriots is a great second story of this series. I know some have an issue with the Christian experience detailed however I am a fan of how the Lord leads during difficult situations
    Not what you think
If I wanted to read the Bible I would have bought one. This is not a story about the end of the world. It's a story how god will save us all if we pray and believe. Disappointed.
The second book in the series
This book by Hollerman is great. It matched the story from the first and continued to instruct in what to expect in a grid-down world.
    EMP II
    Captivating story.
    Excellent narrator.
    Good character development.
Exciting and leaves you looking forward to the next volume.

So far 16 Nuttall novels each one my favorite!!
So far I've read 16 Christopher G. Nuttall novels each one is my favorite!! I fell in love in high school with science fiction. The ability of the genre to let and author give you an analogy of his view of the future. I buy them for myself for quick easy Entertainment while reminding myself the future will have all the same human problems faced by both current events and history. I buy them for my grandchildren in the hopes that this author can interest them to think beyond the level of a good shooting up. I vote for keep it simple and have fun
    I believe you will enjoy!!
    A fine tale!
A good story with a real universe woven in.
If you are portraying British people, military personnel including some aristocratic types, try and get them to use fewer Americanisms. "Gotten" is not part of the language outside the USA.
This is surely something an editor should have caught anyway.
A very good continuing story and I look forward to the next part.
    Awesome !
Vary well written ! Most stories I can listen to while working around home . But not Mr. Nuttall's , often I find that I have to go back a couple of chapters to find the minute detail that was mentioned that makes everything fit together . The mark of a Great Writer .
    Awesome, cannot wait for Vanguard!
Title says it all! Can't wait for Vanguard!
Mr Nuttall, these are the stories you should focus on! Ark Royal, Empires Corps Universe etc.
    The Indian Gambit
This is book six in the Ark royal Series. This story has the Indian government in open rebellion and seizing British held plants and demanding to be recognized as a serious world power. After the Interstellar War the United Kingdom is struggling to rebuild its military as well as its war-torn country. The last thing it needs is a war with India. Can the dispute be solved with diplomacy or does the Royal Navy need to be sent out?
One thing I enjoy about the space opera genre as well as the westerns is the straight forward story of the good guys protecting everyone from the bad guys. Nuttall often takes his ideas from current affairs and puts them onto an interstellar stage. I think that in this story you can think of the Falkland War as the current affair idea.
The plot is straight forward, the pace is fast and the story is well written. Nuttall is continuing to develop the key characters with every story. The space battles are classic, the story entertaining and enjoyable. Ralph Lister does a good job narrating the story.

    Action, Action, Action
This is book 14 of the series. In the last book, a scout ship with a jump drive fell into Jung hands. Captain Nathan Scout and the Aurora must get the jump drive back or destroy it. They end up taking on a Jung battleship in an attempt to obtain or destroy the scout ship.
The Ghatazhak play a key role in this book and Jessica and Commander Telis are at odds with each other. Jessica is also upset as her brother was the Captain of the scout ship that was taken by the Jung.
The Pentaurus Cluster is having problems because of the murder of Prince Casimir and the starting of a civil war. What is to happen to the Alliance and all the help, supplies, people that the Pentaurus Cluster has sent to Earth now that leader is dead. We have two new characters coming forward. Captain Suvan Navarro of the Avendahl who is protecting Princess Deliza. Princess Deliza has taken over from her father and is honoring the arrangements with the Alliance. Deliza comes to Earth to help and is redesigning the Falcon into the Super Falcon. She is a better engineer than her father. All her life she grew up working on his Falcon.
Jessica had escaped with a reporter and her cameraman and they are preparing a broadcast telling the truth about the Jung and the Alliance. The Admiral hopes this will turn worlds against the Jung and they will overthrow them. Of course, this book ends in a cliff-hanger.
Jeffrey Kafer does an excellent job narrating the series.
It's getting "Long In The Tooth"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Could have been time better spent if it didn't start to seem like this story is going to go on forever.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
What ending? Overall I've enjoyed the series...BUT...like all of these space military series this story has no apparent "ending" in sight. Don't get me wrong...the stories are good but at some point the loose ends need to be tied up. With "The Weak and the Innocent" I started losing interest when I realized that the initial battle to start the book was a continuation of the same battle at the end of book 13 and it still takes up a full 3rd of the entire running time of the book.
What three words best describe Jeffrey Kafers voice?
I thoroughly enjoy Jeffrey Kafer's narration and hope he continues to voice many works in the future.
Was Frontiers Saga Series #14: The Weak and the Innocent worth the listening time?
Of all books in the series I found it to be the least engaging for me.
    Any additional comments?
Endless stories tend to eventually get tiring. Why not have a complete "story thread" run it's course over...say...3 books (remember when there were trilogies?). Then do a different story arc in the same universe with the same or different characters involved in another trilogy.

    Publisher's Summary:
Centuries ago the human race fought its first great war against an alien race - and lost. A tiny population of human beings fled to distant Safehold. Centuries later their descendants have forgotten their history; for them life has been an eternal Middle Ages, ruled by the Church of God Awaiting, whose secret purpose is to prevent the reemergence of industrial civilization.
But not all of Safehold's founders were onboard with this plan. Those dissidents left behind their own secret legacies. One of those is Merlyn Athrawes, cybernetic avatar of one of Earth's long-dead defenders, now reawakened after a thousand years to restart human progress and reclaim our place in the universe. Merlyn has intervened in the small Safeholdian realm of Charis, seeding it with ideas and innovations and helping it to rise to challenge the hegemony of the Church. It's been a long and bloody fight, but aided by a stream of inventions - breech-loading rifles, signal rockets, claymore mines, new approaches to manufacturing and supply - Charis and its few allies seem to have finally gained the upper hand. Now major realms have begun to consider switching sides. To all these ends, Merlyn Athrawes has been everywhere, under multiple disguises and wielding hidden powers. The secret of who and what he is has been closely held. But a new player has arrived, one who knows many secrets - including Merlyn's own.

Is David Weber ever going give a us a ending
Beware at this pace it will take 35 more books for them to get the technology to beat the aliens.
    Feels like so much filler
I write as a David Weber fan of long standing so I would like it said I wish I could say this was a good book.
The quality of Webers work has been in a steady fall for years now, a combination of disinterest in his own series and the lack of anything resembling good editing.
This book follows no single character or plot and send to have no real driving force. The story is just one big intermission as both sides in the conflict build up for the next big clash of armies inter spaced with contrived wins and losses for both sides so the players can all be in the correct spots for the next book. As well as try and head off a inevitable complains of invincible protagonists buy showing they to can be hurt but is such a way that all it does is delay the plot for another book.
    Reads like a weapons catalog
Endless descriptions of the details of weapons. How to make them. How well they work. How they compare to earth models. How they compare to earlier Safehold models. How ...
    Get it?
I wore out the fast forward circuits on my reading device.
david seems to have lost the way to Zion
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
a lot more action as in the first seven books. There is now to much dealing with where people come from and how they got to be where they are now. I personally would like David to get on with the story of the war with the church instead of all the sideline chatter.
Has Hell's Foundations Quiver turned you off from other books in this genre?
It is starting to turn me off, as I have enjoyed the action in the earlier books.

    Publisher's Summary:
Lieutenant Travis Long of the Royal Manticoran Navy is the sort of person who likes an orderly universe. One where people follow the rules. Unfortunately he lives in the real universe. The good news is that Travis is one of those rare people who may like rules but has a talent for thinking outside them when everything starts coming apart. That talent has stood him - and the Star Kingdom - in good stead in the past, and it's one reason he's now a "mustang" - an ex-enlisted man who's been given a commission as a king's officer. The bad news is that two of the best ways of making enemies ever invented are insisting on enforcing the rules...and thinking outside them when other people don't. Travis learned that lesson the hard way as a young volunteer in basic training, and he knows that if he could just keep his head down, turn a blind eye to violations of the rules, and avoid stepping on senior officers' toes, he'd do just fine.
But the one rule Travis Long absolutely can't break is the one that says an officer in the Royal Navy does his duty, whatever the consequences. At the moment, there are powerful forces in the young Star Kingdom of Manticore's Parliament that don't think they need him. For that matter they're pretty sure they don't need the Royal Manticoran Navy, either. After all, what does a sleepy little single-system star nation on the outer edge of the explored galaxy need with a navy? Unhappily for them, the edge of the explored galaxy can be a far more dangerous place than they think it is. They're about to find out why they need the navy...and how very, very fortunate they are that Travis Long is in it.

    Excellent Space Opera
I am a big Honor Harrington fan and can hardly wait for more stories about Manticore and Honor. This is book two in the Manticore Ascendant series. Lieutenant Travis Long of the Royal Manticorean Navy is a mustang. Long is an enlisted man who has been given a commission as an officer. Manticore is going through a stage where it is trying to decide if it even needs a navy. Suddenly they find out how dangerous the universe is.
The book is well written, the pace is fast, and as with any Weber book there are technical details about space flight and fighting. I think the co-authors kept Weber from his usual long winded political rants. Weber is great at writing space battles and this story has some good space battle scenes. The book will keep your attention all the way to the end. The book provides information about the early history of Manticore. Eric Michael Summerer does a good job narrating the book.
A good story, although not new.
A good story with fascinating characters. It was a rehash of an earlier story and probably it will be long time before we see the next in this series. David Weber is a great writer. Unfortunately he never finishes a series. It must be some kind of mental block. He just starts a new one so that even more are unfinished.
Even so this one is a part of the history of one of his best stories, the Honerverse of The greatest of all Manticorans, Honor Harrington.
