Decent, but not as good as the first two.

Lee Henry "Hank" Oswald is one of those private eyes you come to like a whole lot. He's a smartass with guts and intellect. In the first two books in this series (Still River: A Lee Henry Oswald Mystery (Lee Henry Oswald Mysteries)andThe Next Time You Die: A Lee Henry Oswald Mystery (Lee Henry Oswald Mysteries)) he's caught up in action sequence after action sequence. This one is a whole lot slower when it comes to the action. There's enough bloodshed, all right, but everything seems to move at a far slower pace than the previous novels.

At the start of this one, Hank has decided not to be a PI any longer. He's been put through the wringer in the course of the two previous novels. His friends have been put in mortal danger because of their ties to him or because they're helping him. He's watched loved ones die, and he's lost his home due to his involvment with some pretty brutal characters. He's just whipped. It takes the reappearance of Olson--his weapons-dealing, life-saving gay compadre (and one of the many people hurt as a result of his involvement with Hank)--to draw him back into any sort of investigative work. Hank's determined to be a bartender, but even five minutes of Olson showing up at his workplace leads to Hank losing that particular job, and Olson ends up getting Hank to commit to finding the daughter of a dying veteran buddy. As a result of THAT, Hank's drawn into an even bigger web of killings and bloodshed.

I like Hank a whole lot, but I really missed his interactions with Olson and Delmar (Olson's life partner in the previous novels), and I miss that sense of connection he had to so many people before. I suppose those connections are gone for realistic reasons, but Hank pretty much on his own throughout most of this book is tough. He's good, though. He can handle most of the crazy stuff thrown at him. But I miss his "circle."

On the whole, I imagine the differences in this novel are understandable because they're in keeping with what's happening to Hank as a human being and as a man who truly loves his friends and extended family.

Solid "four star" effort here.

This was terrific! I read before going to bed at night ...

This was terrific! I read before going to bed at night and I actually caught myself giggling like a girl (I'm a woman of 62). The series of 3 books are intense, funny, witty, sarcastic, and the main character is a plethora of many of my favorite characters, such as: Bosch, Spenser, Reacher, Jesse Stone, Elvia Cole, Joe Pike and Jim Butcher. I wish there were more than three books, but I am ready to step up into the new series and see if Jon Cantrell is a character that's all of the above! Great writing! Harry Hunsicker has outdid himself!

I am enjoying this series and the characters as they are developed. Quite original but not unbelievable. A good read.

The Lee Henry Oswald series is fairly entertaining. The books always seem to be on the verge of being better, but never quite get over the hump from so-so entertainment to must reads.

Good listen but definitely not Lincoln

Not as good as Lincoln Rhyme but a very nice story with some good twists, but felt like the author was trying to hard at the end. got too much at the end, story could have finished a half hour earlier

Deaver does it again!

At the completion of the final scene all of my initial thoughts about this mature, scratchy narrator had faded away. Drifted away with the plot lines and suspense created by Deaver, and indeed Twomey.

Another great Audible audio book which I'll listen to again and again.

Just when you thought it was safe....

Fantastic. The only word to describe this audio book. Well read with suitable definitions between characters, and there are a lot of them. I was totally engrossed with the twisting plot which is quietly subtle and then... wham! a bolt from the blue. The book is long enough to allow the listener to have got to know the 'cast' and delivered with precision. An excellent read and I found myself extending the time on my sleep timer so I could listen to the next chapter, and the next.

Really good.

I was dubious about the new character Kathryn Dance as I'm a big fan of Licoln Rhyme but I really liked this story. Her character is believable and likeable. My only critisism would be the constant references to kenesics (her speciality), it's obviously how her character thinks but it can get a bit annoying (although interesting). The villain is also very good in this book and I hope that people like him don't exist in the real world! I liked the narrator but wanted her to be a little more dynamic at some points but all in all it's a great story.

Not really sure what i think

Ive only been listening to audiobooks for 4-5 months now and im working my way through lee childs Jack Reacher books, i thought i would give Deaver a go and selected this book based on it reviews.

There are interesting parts in the book with some suspense and some intrigue that does make listening to the book an enjoyable activity. However I've noticed that if i put on a jack reacher book i can finish it within 48 hours of non stop listening whereas i have had this book for 2 months now and im only really two thirds through it and where I would listen to a jack reacher book whenever and wherever i am i only really listen to this when i have nothing else to do. So while i would say the story and plot do retain interest when listening i would say that its not a book that compels me to listen to it.

the first audible book in this series is maxwell's mask which I listened to and enjoyed quite a while ago. now having bought all the rest of the series will be listening to them alternatively

maxwell's point is actually dead man's point where three murders have been committed in and around this area. Maxwell gets involved in solving murders which either helps or hinders depending on which side you are on.

there is humour running through, a bit of history (as Maxwell is a history teacher) and his pupils through the years have called him mad max with good reason.

enjoyed this story very much. recommend.

Excellent abridgement

I realized after I started to listen that I'd read the book years ago. It's good, pacey story that builds up to a satisfactory ending. It is excellently read by Neil Pearson and the abridger has done a first class job of getting all the pertinent details of the story without losing much of Peter Robinson's narrative.

The story was too complex and nothing caught my attention for the first hour...so I quit.

Would you listen to A Family Concern again? Why?

yes but it would be a long time in the future then i wouldn't be able to remember who did it (which was a surprise)

the interweaving stories of the families concerned.

What about Jacqueline Tongs performance did you like?

she gives life to the characters which involves you with them and the situations they find themselves in far more than reading a the book.

the ending left me stunned because I thought it was someone else who committed the crime.

I am really enjoying this series so far and am looking forward to the next book. to what will happen in rhona's family and what will she be researching next, another series of articles or a biography.

Best as an audio book

McCall Smith back to his best with this latest in the series. As so often with these books, the story is less about what happens and more about how we get there. For everyone who has followed them, the characters and their adventures have become a comforting constant.

Having read the previous books in text form, I was a little nervous about how the character's 'voices' would sit with my own previously imagined ones. What a revelation - the reader's interpretation thoughroughly enhanced my experience of the text. The authentic African voices of the reader's performance delivered an experience closer to McCall's written intention than I could ever have hoped for from reading the text myself. I found myself thinking with each new character 'Yes, that's exactly how they sound!'. I'll certainly to downloading the next in the series and can highly recommend this version to all devotees of the books.

Enchanting

I thoroughly enjoyed this book the nuances of life and the vivid way in which Alexander Mcall Smith tells the tales that entwine to make the whole story. The bush comes to life and you can really use your imagination to see the people and places, so much so that when the television programmes came about I was left disappointed with the result as it bore no resemblance to the rich tapestry he had woven within my mind.

Great performance

Where to begin?

What was most disappointing about Jonathan Kellermans story?

Alex Delaware is a charmless fellow. If a reader can't engage with the main character then all is lost.

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Jeff Harding?

Jeff Harding has his fans but I think his narration is laboured, hammy, a distraction.

What character would you cut from Gone?

I'm not a Kellerman fan, I've tried his books a few times but this was the final nail in the coffin. No more.

Gone is Good Read

A bit all over the place in the beginning but persistence pays off for a real thriller with a big twist at the end.
