    Publisher's Summary:
Edgar Award-winning author Thomas H. Cook spins a riveting tale about one mans struggle to cope with staggering loss. Until his son was kidnapped and murdered, George Gates was a globe-trotting travel writer. Now he writes boring articles by day and broods at night. But when a retiring cold-case detective piques his interest with details of a missing writer, he feels compelled to discover her fate.
    Critic Reviews:
"When his editor suggests that Gates write a profile of Alice Barrows, an orphan girl dying of progeria (premature aging), he discovers that Alice is an avid detective fan, and together they form an unlikely partnership. Adept at merging past and present plot lines, Cook eloquently examines the often cathartic act of storytelling." (Publishers Weekly)

    All over the map
This book starts with promise of an interesting tale, but it mixes so many threads and meanders through so many different stories that it loses all narrative tension. It's a very poorly woven story.
    Three Stars
Started well and the multiple plot lines were interesting, but sometimes confusing. The end was a disappointment/
    Lots of interruptions
As a reader who has written several novels himself, I'm almost always distracted by the structure of a novel. Thomas H. Cook uses several occupational tools to make it to the end of a 276-page novel.
First off, there's the novel within a novel approach. George Cates is a former travel writer turned newspaperman who is approached by a retired missing persons detective, Arlo McBride, who wants him to help solve a twenty-year-old case. The woman who disappeared is a poet named Katherine Carr and she's left a novelette of sorts and some poetry. George Cates is a tortured soul, who blames himself for the disappearance and murder of his son Teddy, and when he is assigned a story involving a little girl with progeria, the "old age disease," he hopes Katherine's novelette, will appeal to the Nancy Drew in Alice and also assuage his guilt about his son.
And so we have several plot lines. Cates fills us in on The Teddy story as well as little dribs and drabs from Cates' travel writing career. For instance, Cates was working on a story involving Extremadura, a sort of desert region in southern Spain where many of the Conquistadors came from, when Teddy disappeared. Some of these interruptions add to the story, others interrupt the flow.
This is also a frame story. The novel begins and ends as George Cates tells the mysterious Mr. Mayawati Katherine's story. The ending is also rather interesting in that Thomas H. Cook has Cates make fun of the predictability of the end of Katherine's story, then turns right around and uses it himself.
    Thomas H. Cook
It remains a mystery why Thomas H. Cook has not received the universal acclaim he thoroughly deserves. In his novels of psychological suspense, Cooks takes the reader along the slippery slopes with the narrator. Just as in many other of his novels, this plot centers around a murdered child and a missing woman and much of the plot centers on events long past.
The narrator's son, abducted from a school bus stop because the father was late to pick up the boy, spends his life writing "cuddly" stories for his hometown newspaper, guilt ridden but obsessed still with his missing son.

As Venice experiences a debilitating heatwave, Commissario Brunetti prepares to escape the city and spend time with his family in the mountains. However, the weather is the last thing on Ispettore Vianellos mind; it seems his aunt has become obsessed with horoscopes and has been withdrawing large amounts of money from the family business. Not knowing what to do, he consults Brunetti and asks permission to unofficially trail her, which leads to the flat of Stefano Gorini. But who is this man? And why is Vianellos aunt giving him large amounts of money?
A few days later, Brunetti receives a visit from a friend who works at the Commune. It seems that discrepancies have been occurring at the Tribunale involving Judge Luisa Coltellini and Araldo Fontana, an usher with a flawless track record. While having coffee with friends, Signorina Elettra soon discovers that Fontana is living in a luxurious apartment on the Misericordia. But how can an usher afford such an expensive apartment, and what is his involvement with Judge Coltellini? Brunetti asks Signorina Elettra to investigate further but the computer system at the courthouse is down, and so Brunetti leaves with his family for their holiday.
When news reaches Brunetti that the usher from the Tribunale has been murdered, in a violent attack in the courtyard of his home, he returns early to investigate. It soon becomes clear that Araldo Fontana was a good man, so why would someone want him dead? And, does Judge Coltellini have anything to do with it?

    Great Mystery
As usual S.D. TOOLEY has written another great mystery with some " ghostly intrigue." The family interactions, the relationships are brought to life and not least, the mystery prevails. Tooley has a mastering way with descriptive phases, so much so, you see through her eyes and words the scenes she is envisioning and delight in being in the mist with her.
Looking forward to the next book ( 4th one ) and found it interesting the marketing idea of advertising just before you finish the book. Of course YOU have the choice of selecting or not , but almost to the end of a great book ,it would take someone with more willpower than me to skip a chance of another intriguing read.
Thanks for the entertainment and escape.

Great third installment to a top notch mystery
Restless Spirit is the best of the Sam Casey mysteries so far. There was character and relationship development that has been missing in the two previous novels, but I'm not so sure it's a good thing. The story contains many twists and turns to keep you completely riveted and some new characters are introduced in addition to the usual cast which is starting to grow on me. Interestingly enough, this would still work as a standalone read, where as I felt the second story definitely needed the pre-requisite When the Dead Speak. Regardless, you'll still be at best advantage, if not somewhat frustrated, by reading the previous two installments.
Sergeant Sam Casey, still on suspension from the police force for suspected murder, still pregnant, and still married to Sergeant Jake Mitchell, has a very special ability. When she touches objects or is in certain places, she can see and hear how a person died. As she's venturing through her backwoods to a new development where a friend is having a house built, she finds a jacket button. When she picks it up, she immediately loses herself to a vision and sees the brutal stabbing murder of a 16 year old girl and hears a whisper of who the killer might be.

    A fascinating complexity
From the aspect of a mystery story, the plots are intricate, there are always surprises that pop up just when everything seems solved, and there are always enlivening pictres and details of landscapes, everyday life, historical and social developments. But Rees' books are always interesting because of the small slice of insight they give you into the grave complexities of the relationships of groups and interests, the internecine struggle among them derived from the pressures of life in occupied Palestine..with the current of humanity and struggle to survive and maintain some level of caring family lives and relationships.
A good detective story and credible look at gritty Gaza
In the early pages of Matt Beynon Rees' new book, "A Grave in Gaza," one its characters observes that in the political and social devastation of today's Gaza territory "there is no single, isolated crime (here). Each one is linked to many others...when you touch one of them, it sets off reverberations that will be felt by powerful people, ruthless people." This is expressed as a friendly warning to the book's protagonist, Omar Yussuf Sirhan (Abu Ramiz), the principled teacher turned-detective, who travels to Gaza from the West Bank on a routine school inspection and finds himself trying to save first an imprisoned Palestinian whistleblower and very quickly after, his friend and kidnapped UN colleague, Magnus Wallender. Driven by personal decency and a sense of moral outrage, Omar Yussuf plunges into a labyrinth of gang warfare and dueling warlords on behalf of his colleagues and almost loses his own liberty and life.
Author Rees deftly uses Omar Yussuf's pursuit of his colleagues' liberation to take a hard look at the pervasive corruption and physical degeneration that characterize life in Gaza for all those trapped in that small territory. Rees enhances his novel with impressive explanations of the history of the area and, more interestingly, with one wonderful character study after another. The author's graphic and continuing description of the ever-present dust storms and what they do the human disposition and the physical landscape, are highly effective and extremely discomforting. As intricate and good as the plot is in this novel, the character studies and descriptions of the place are even better. This is an insightful and wise book that is rich with wonderful writing. Highly recommended.

Leo Painter is the CEO of Earth Global, a large energy, mining, and real-estate development firm. He and his party of company executives are traveling in Botswana to consult with the government about accessing their extractable resources.
Sekoa is a male lion who shares with his bipedal enemies the misfortune of being the bearer of HIV/AIDS. Weakened by the disease, he loses his place as the alpha male in his pride and now, dying and harassed by a pack of hyenas, seeks only a place to rest in peace.
Painter, pursued by his own "hyenas", only wishes to find a last resting place where he can further his dream: to build a resort/casino on Botswana's Chobe River.
Their paths cross with tragic consequences as police, a plucky woman game warden, and myriad local authorities, hoteliers, and tribesmen vie over what happened and to whom.
    Critic Reviews:
"Ramsay's clever stand-alone shows the ruthlessness of the business and the animal worlds without resorting to gimmickry....Ramsay matches keen characterizations with an obvious affection for Botswana." (Publishers Weekly)
"A bit rougher-edged than Alexander McCall Smith's genteel No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series, this mystery will still attract his fans and those who like Michael Stanley's Detective Kubu series." (Library Journal)
    Members Reviews:
Botswana is the real winner in this book
This standalone by Frederick Ramsay shows the ruthlessness of the business and animal worlds with two storylines. One is of Sekoa, an old, ill lion who's been supplanted as the alpha male of his pride by a younger, stronger male. As Sekoa fights for survival, he's shadowed by a pack of hyenas that is waiting for him to make one mistake. The second storyline involves Leo (the Lion?) Painter, an old Chicago businessman with a weak heart, who has his own pack of human hyenas: his stepson, his stepson's wife, and various business associates. Ramsay shows that one world is every bit as deadly as the other just as he also shows us that Sekoa and Leo aren't as bad as we'd originally thought.
Botswana comes out as the real winner in Predators. It's portrayed as one of the least corrupt countries in the world, and rightfully proud of that fact. It's a jewel of great price and great natural wealth being circled by packs of hyenas (with names like Russia and America) just waiting to strike. I loved the setting and the wildlife depicted in this book. The people of Botswana are shown putting up with the idiocy of tourists because at this point in time tourism is the major source of their livelihood. But once these people are "off the clock," they have their own lives and their own customs.
For me, the best characters in the book were Sekoa the lion and Sanderson the game ranger. I was hoping for a different outcome for that noble old lion even though I knew it wasn't realistic. Sanderson has difficulties in her own life. Her son is dying of AIDs, just like her beloved husband did. She fears for her daughter, eyeing any young man her daughter favors with great suspicion. But what can she do, other than to slip condoms in her daughter's purse and to try not to nag? Sanderson is level-headed and thinks well on her feet, which is good because she is working a man's job and has to outmaneuver the dated way of thinking of her male counterparts on an almost hourly basis.

peter wickham performing it. a good balance between funny and serious.

another good story from m j trow with more of henry hall than in previous books.
    Funny and thoughtful
MJ Trow has written a story with a crime that we all will have heard of at some stage, and it could just as easily be in our community. It was brilliantly read by Peter Wickham. Before the crime can get to gruesome, the humour in the book surfaces and you find yourself smiling if not laughing out loud right in the midst of murder. Great book
I really enjoy the works of MJ Trow
As someone who has worked in schools a lot I find the humor in the Maxwell books to be real 'laugh out loud', They are well narrated with excellent plot development and you never guess the way the plot developing or who dunnit!
Trow never fails to make you laugh out loud.
Trow's characters come alive, he will have you chuckling over the tragic and humorous by turns. The Mad Max novels keep you guessing to the last page with his skill at spinning mysteries a twist further than expected.
    Is Peter Maxwell past it?
A disappointing addition to Mr Trow's Maxwell series. If you are a fan of Peter Maxwell you will find only the occasional flash of his usual wit and investigative brilliance ? and I wish there more had been made of his, albeit temporary, headship of Leaford High. Otherwise there was more of the curmudgeon, plodding his way slowly to a solution. And 'slowly' is the operative word. The average listener/reader will get there after only a few chapters and, if like me, will spend the rest of the book in impatient frustration at Max's, and the police's, inability to see the, "bleedin' obvious", as Angus, the friendly SOCO might have put it.
It was, however, nice to have a bit more of Henry Hall and a broadening of his character (does he still lead a dance band in his spare time?), and Max's relationship with his Mother-in-Law to be holds the promise of some future fun. His partner, now ? as of the final chapter ? his wife, D. S. Jackie Carpenter, was uncharacteristicaly wimpish in this story and their son, still so young, comes across as little horror, so twee as to induce some of the same symptoms as affected most of the poisoning victims.
Max is at his best in the school setting, betraying Mr. Trow's real day job. I hope the next plot will get back to the school and Peter Maxwell's delightful antics as the charismatic head of 6th Form and thorn in the side of management. There are more and more idiocies in school management every year and Max has perfected the art of bursting their bubbles. More! More I cry.
I remain a Peter Maxwell fan and look forward to a return to form in the next book. This one, sadly, is for confirmed fans only.

    Great Romance, iffy Mystery
A friend sent me this book but I found it difficult to read as the print was too light and the paper it was printed on cheap and added to the books unreadability. It's a measure of how much I enjoyed it though that I came here and purchased it in audio format.
I found it intriguing because I don't think I have ever read a mystery set in China that did not have a western character in it anywhere. And It's a good book. But I had to adjust my expectations in order to enjoy it. I was expecting a mystery, and it is that, but only sort of. The whole mystery thing is not developed very well. What interested me about the book was place and people. I enjoy arm chair traveling and this book did a pretty good job with time-and-place. It says this book is the first book in a series that the author is planning and I think she was laying a lot of background introductions to the characters and Mei's family situation. If there is a book two I plan to give it a try. There was just enough in this book to like that I will give this author another chance. But when a book is advertised as a mystery I expect the mystery to be the focus so I didn't give this book top marks.
    Disappointed
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
More mystery. A great concept, a female Chinese PI. Book started off great and just went down hill.
Has The Eye of Jade turned you off from other books in this genre?
No, I like the idea of a female Chinese PI
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Narrator was good. I enjoyed her.
What character would you cut from The Eye of Jade?
I don't know it's just a mish mash of characters. Her sister is not likeable.
    Any additional comments?
It's as if the author had a ton of ideas and not enough Adderall. To me, she was all over the place.

Susan Rogers Cooper Does It Again!
It's been seven years since Susan Rogers Cooper (and the rest of us) visited E.J Pugh; wife, mother of three, romance novelist, and sleuth. Was "Romanced To Death", the new E.J. Pugh mystery worth the wait? You better believe it! The book follows E.J. to the American Romance Writers Association convention in Austin, TX, where she almost immediately is embroiled in murder, mayhem, and catty backstabbing. Interspersed throughout E.J.'s escapades is a deeper, darker story involving her 13 year old adopted daughter, whose family was brutally murdered nine years before. Cooper uses flashbacks to her first E.J. Pugh mystery "One, Two, What Did Daddy Do?" to set this part of the story up, which allows new readers to appreciate this book as a stand alone, if they've never read any of the previous books in the series. For fans and faithful readers, Cooper's characters are still fresh, her plotting is first rate, and the resolution is very satisfying!
    terrific
I enjoy Susan Rogers Cooper entire series with the character of EJ Pugh. It is funny and somewhat gruesome at the same time.
Death at a Romance Writers Convention -- Audio Review
This book is narrated by Nicole Poole. She does a good job with the various accents. It is about 8 hours long.
Cooper manages to sustain suspense with multiple viewpoints. This could have been a disaster, but she manages to keep up the action with some interesting twists. Part of the action is happening in E. J. Pugh's home town of Black Cat Ridge, Texas, the rest is set at the American Romance Writers Association convention in Austin.
    E. J. Pugh has been nominated for a Lady award and is attending her first ARWA convention. She is immediately introduced by a friend she met through email, to a group of veteran writers, a truly obnoxious convention administrator--"The Beast", and her greatest fan, a/k/a, stalker, who EJ dubs Comb-over Boy. It's no surprise that someone is murdered.
Meanwhile, back at Black Cat Ridge, her adopted daughter, Elizabeth, is being stalked. In the first book in this series Elizabeth's entire family was murdered. While E.J. solved that mystery, it's clear that someone connected with it is now after the lone survivor. Meanwhile E. J.'s 15 year old son is about to learn an important life lesson.
Funny as well as suspenseful, I really enjoyed this one. Cooper is one of those writers whose characters tend to be both eccentric and down home.
    Unrealistic
I picked up this hardback book at a garage sale, and now I know why it was only ten cents. The characters and the way they act and respond to things are completely unrealistic and just plain absurd. I have found myself ready to put this book down and not finish it several times, but I keep pushing forward because I feel like I need to finish every book I start. I am a little over half way through the book, and it just gets worse and worse, and harder and harder to finish.

    Copp very Entertaining
    Copp in Deep
Copp in Deep is a fabulous novel to read. It was filled with action and excitement throughout the whole novel. Copp in Deep is an action-packed novel with a very creative super hero. Joe Copp is the main character of the novel, who gets caught up with a few murders, brawls with other people on the streets, and running from the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Joe used to be a police officer but now he is a private investigator. Copp is hired by his old buddy ex- cop Tom Chase, to protect him from the FBI. Copp meets up with plenty of sexy women, while trying to escape from the KGB men. Tom Chase is arrested as a spy. Putnam and Delancey were assassinated, as they were two top executives of a company called Power Tron. This novel has you thinking about every little suspicious event in the novel. There are some choppy scenes in the book where you say, "what just happened?" That will all smooth out later as you keep reading the novel. Overall this is a good book of entertainment and I highly advise that this novel be read in your spare time.

    Writer is a great one
I have been reading Don Pendleton for many years. Almost everything he writes entertaining. This is a pretty good series.
    You know what to expect
If you've read and enjoyed the first Copp story then dive right into this one. For the price of $0.99 it can't be beat. Less in the way of fisticuffs and less of Copp's "philosophy" but more story. Pendleton keeps things moving along.
A Mad Copp Is A Dangerous Thing
Don Pendleton is best known of course for creating The Executioner Mack Bolan and later turning it into an empire. But he wrote other things as well and very good in their own right. Former policeman P.I. Joe Copp was one. COPP ON FIRE was the second of six published in 1988.
Joe Copp, though like most P.I.s close to broke all the time, didn't really want the job, eve when $1300.00 in cash was laid in his hands. A handicapped man in a big white limousine wanted him for ten hours to take photos of people entering and leaving a business. He was looking for a rat. The man remained unidentified and after spending the day taking photos Joe met and turned the film, undeveloped, over to the chauffeur.
That's when things went downhill fast. The business blew up. a bomb took out the limousine and it's occupants, and the people Joe had photographed started getting knocked off one by one. He'd turned over his copies to the police and one wanted to hang the whole mess on Joe.
Figuring he'd been set up to the the fall, Joe got mad and went hunting, even as more bodies were showing up.
Nicely plotted and paced novel that I couldn't stop reading.
