    Author: Jakob Arjouni
    Narrator: Steven Crossley
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 20 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-13-11
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 4 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
Love is never easy - especially when your girlfriend is an illegal Thai prostitute who has been kidnapped (again) by a gang of sex traffickers. Fortunately for the hapless fiancé, wisecracking gumshoe Kemal Kayankaya is on the case. The son of a Turkish garbage collector, he knows a thing or two about living in the ethnic fringes of the ugliest German city of them all: Frankfurt. Kayankaya plunges into the city's underbelly, where the police don't care if you live or die, and the powerful view an illegal alien as just another paycheck.
One Man, One Murder populates its pages with unforgettable characters, whip-smart dialogue, and a connoisseur's collection of grim details. But it is Arjouni's dead-on description of contemporary Europe's racial politics, vacuous nationalism, and social injustice that make his novels rise above the rest.

    good story poor performance
Would you be willing to try another one of Steven Crossleys performances?
Not if he's reading something other than a British story.
    Any additional comments?
The story, setting and characters were interesting but I found it increasingly annoying to realize that the reader had created a range of British accents. It just spoiled the whole ambience of the story. It never felt like a Turk in Frankfurt, but rather a British detective in London.

An enchanting book with a dark side
I've just finished this book after reading a review on a Scandanavian book review site, and I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish. It is beautifully written and paints a vivid picture of life on a rural island in Sweden. The characters are believeable and Johan Theorin successfully manages to interweave the plot with their personal lives which actually makes you care about what happens to them. I also really liked the references to folklore and elves, in fact it made me wish that elves really did exist!! There are plenty of subplots to keep you guessing to the end, it is enhanced by the excellent narration (and voice) of Nigel Anthony and I would thoroughly recommend this book to anyone.
    The brilliant Johan Theorin .
Would you listen to The Quarry again? Why?
Yes . Need his other books on audible.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The old man . But they all make for a great book .
Which scene did you most enjoy?
    All of them.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    Yes.
    Any additional comments?
Please read or listen to Johan Theorins books . He & Nesbo are my favourite Scandinavian authors . He's not as prolific as Jo Nesbo & writes very differently but he is also a master of his art . Only sad that just 2 of his 4 books are available on audible. Can't wait for the new book that I've pre-ordered to read .
    Mind numbing
I genuinely have no idea what the purpose of this book is. I read a review that suggested the book was merely a narration of a number of characters, I would suggest that is the best and most positive comment that can be made.
    Not a thriller
I think the book description is misleading in that I thought it would be first and foremost a crime thriller/whodunit., and it isn't really. The crime story runs all the way through, but really this book is about a set of characters and their stories and relationships and connections with each other, and they are well written so that you care about them and what will become of them. This it's a great book, but not an edge of your seat thriller if that's what you're hoping for. Nigel Anthony is wonderful of course -I found this title by searching for him as I love his narration.

    Good book
Love the book - hated to find out the author died.
    fine amateur sleuth
Kitzi Camden and Beth Fairfield have been best friends ever since they met when they were eight years old at Camp Green Clover in Texas. Now in their fifties, they attend the twice yearly Craft Retreats that the camp holds. The two women and Beth's daughter Shannon arrive at the camp.
The teen asks Kitzi to drive her to a hardware store on the first night of camp because Shannon insists she saw her father's car parked there once when he was supposed to be someplace else and he has been going out at night using flimsy excuses. When they arrive at the parking lot they see Shannon's father making out with a camp crafter May Feather. They return to the camp but agree not to say anything to Beth that night; the next morning they learn that May was murdered. Shannon and Mitzi lie to the police about their whereabouts the night before but one of the offices don't believe them. Kitzi decides to do a little sleuthing on her own to see if she can find out who the killer is.
This first installment in Barbara Burnett Smith's new amateur sleuth mystery is a cleverly constructed who done it with enough suspects that the reader won't be able to figure out who the killer is until the author chooses to reveal the perpetrator's identity. Even when the murderer is revealed, readers will be shocked because that person is the last one anyone would guess is capable of killing. The heroine proves that being a half century old means one remains energetic and quick willed as those twenty-five years younger. BEAD ON TROUBLE is an entertaining and lively mystery.

    Great Beading Mystery
A huge bead camp is going on and Kitzi and her best friend Beth and Beth's daughter Shannon are attending. It is at the same camp that Beth and Kitzi used to go to every year for summer camp and that they were counselors at when they got older. Well now a friend of theirs owns it and she does beat retreats twice a year. Usually this is the best and most relaxing time Kitzi has. This retreat is different in many ways though, first off they find out that a huge contractor is coming to the retreat to look for new talent for their very popular business, which may not mean much to Kitzi being she only does beading to relax and isn't great enough to make her own creations but her friend Beth is amazing and is very much nervous and wants to impress. Secondly, there is a murder at camp, yup a murder, of one of the other beaders, May Feather. Kitzi may have been in the wrong place at the wrong time the night before when her goddaughter and her went out for a night ride. They didn't see the murder, but what they did see could make them look very bad in the law's eyes...if they tell that is.

When Lily Bard stumbles upon the corpse of a local bodybuilder, the town's old racial tensions begin to boil over. Although it is Lily who has to decide whether to stay and fight for justice, or run away one more time....

Well written book that hooked me on Lily Bard
"Shakespeare's Champion" the second Lily Bard mystery, confirmed to me that I'm hooked on the series.
Unfortunately, the plot of this book was give given away in Charlaine Harris' latest book, "Midnight Crossroad", so I already knew a lot of what would happen. That I still enjoyed the book is a tribute to how well written it is and how focused it is on the development of Lily Bard.
The "Champion" of the title is a body-builder who is murdered in the gym Lily uses. The plot focuses around the actions of a secretive white supremacist group that has sprung up in Shakespeare and the people who are trying to stop them.
Part of the strength of the book comes from the fact that Lily is cast neither as Civil Rights Activist nor as a vigilante but as a woman trying to get by without drawing attention to herself but unable to turn away when people are being hurt.
Lily sees herself as being able to do two things well: clean and fight. She sees a great deal of what is going on around her but does not comment on it. She is more likely to offer help or violence than words. She does what she thinks should be done and she refuses to back down from those who threaten her.
But Lily is not a hard-boiled action-hero. The book shows her compassion in helping the sick and comforting the dying, her empathy with those who have been hurt, and her reflex to intervene when violence is being done to those who can't defend themselves.
Lily doesn't set out, Miss Marple, style to investigate the white supremacist group but her job and her social contacts in Shakespeare mean she is in the wrong place at the wrong time often enough to be drawn into the action.
There are some powerful scenes in this book. For me, the most powerful describes Lily's involvement in a bombing and its aftermath. This is an up close and personal view of what this kind of violence does to those involved in it. It is beautifully and convincingly written.
The book confronts some difficult small town topics: racial tension; the reaction to a promiscuous white woman who has sex with, among others, a black man; Christian fundamentalist who believe that God speaks through them and that those who oppose them are not just wrong but evil; men who attack women; packs of men who commit violence; corrupt police officers who turn a blind eye or even lend a hand; the social mores that mean that none of this gets discussed in polite society. I don't think it sets out to be a politically correct, liberal book. These issues are filtered primarily by Lily's view of the world, not political dogma.

    A treatment for insomnia
This might well be the slowest audiobook I ever had the misfortune of buying. The narrator speaks with such monotonous voice, at such slow pace, that I decided to give up listening after a few chapters. These, by the way, have been randomly divided by the audiobook editor, making it impossible for the listener to check out how much is left till the end of the actual book chapter. I only recommend it if you are an insomniac looking for a natural remedy for falling asleep.
    Terrific book
    Thoroughly recommended!
Great writing...narration spot on & kept me constantly listening which is a great indicator of a good book!
    Brilliant
I have all of the hard copies of these books but dont have time to read, love that they are avilable on audio, Paul Thornley is a brilliant narrator, you really get a feeling of the characters
    Long winded and went nowhere
The story was long winded, too much waffle and not enough action. Disappointed with this one.
    Worth a listen
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, it is a good listen, moves along fairly fast
Who was your favorite character and why?
Thorne's dad. The humour used to describe his condition
What about Paul Thornleys performance did you like?
    Easy to follow
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
    Not really
    Any additional comments?
    Ending was weak

Iris Oakley, pregnant and still recovering from her husbands murder, wants only to carry on as a keeper at Finley Memorial Zoo in Vancouver, Washington. But she is confronted with a terrifying situation: alone and with no elephant expertise, she must rescue her boss, Kevin Wallace, from being mauled by a zoo elephant. She finds a surprising number of motives to kill the foreman, but Damrey, the elephant, doesnt have one. Iris discovers that the elephant keepers are locked in a bitter feud, the new veterinarian is keeping secrets, and an old flame still hates Wallace.
Meanwhile, animal-rights activists are picketing to have the zoo elephants sent to a sanctuary, a better option for them than even the improved exhibit that is on the drawing board. And why isnt that exhibit under construction as planned? A new foreman shows up with alarming ideas, the police keep dropping by, and now animals are disappearing into thin air....

Excellent read with too many characters
This was a switch from the usual whodunit, and as a "zoo mystery" it held my interest all the way through. Reading this book added to my knowledge of, and love for, the non-human inhabitants of our planet.
The workplace politics play large in the story as well, and I am sure the friction will remind many of their own experiences working in any office, zoo-related or not.
The author is gifted with description and especially adept with dialogue - I never expected to be hooked on a book with a lot of dialogue - but there it was, hip and humorous.
However, two aspects of this novel rendered my score a "4" instead of a "5". First of all there are too many incidental characters, making it difficult to keep track. Additionally the writer uses little imagination in naming these ancillary characters, thus making it even more difficult to keep in mind, as one reads, their respective story arcs and roles in the narrative.
Secondly, the events towards the end are a bit over the top in believability, even though one feels a ton of empathy towards the plucky protagonist.
But I do look forward to further "zoo stories" by this author. This book reminded me of the Nevada Barr books which take up residence in various national parks. I hope to read more escapades of Iris Oakley, just like Anna Pigeon of the national park mysteries. "Did Not Survive" has a similar dynamic - individual employee vs. large bureaucratic institution, dependent in part on public funding. And then there is the archetypal search for the evildoer amongst the staff. I hope Ann Littleton will continue with Iris Oakley and the "Zoo Mysteries".
    Another Winner for Ann Littlewood!
Having enjoyed the first of this series (Night Kill), I wanted to read more about Iris and the Finley Zoo. The details of zoo life are interesting, the characters likeable and the mystery well-written.

    Intriguing
This books is so much better than the last one; largely because they narrator was as million times better (&I'm not exaggerating!) Great story, Worthing listening to.
    Utterly boring!
If this book wasnt for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?
Someone with a profound interest in police regulations.
What will your next listen be?
Something with a bit more action.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
He sounded as bored as I felt! Brummy accent awful!
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Lost River?
All the detail of police regulations, which was most of the book.
    Any additional comments?
I persevered, but found I did not care about any of the characters, or what happened to them, so gave up listening a little after half way. It just never got going.
