If you like detective stories, this is NOT for you
Would you try another book from Stacy Verdick Case and/or Justine Huxley?
    Probably not!
Has A Grand Murder turned you off from other books in this genre?
    No
Have you listened to any of Justine Huxley???s other performances before? How does this one compare?
    No
Do you think A Grand Murder needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
No, I don't think this author was very good at portraying women detective in a good light at all and I wouldn't read any thing else she wrote that had to do with that.
    Any additional comments?
This was such a dumbed-down version of women detectives that it was demeaning and embarrassing to the profession and I am not in that profession nor is anyone in my family, I just felt bad for anyone that was. The story was OK, but I couldn't get over the lack of depth.

    Publisher's Summary:
When a seventeen-year-old Moldovan boy is found dead on Hampstead Heath, the case falls to DCI Karen Shields and her overstretched team. Karen knows she needs a result. What she doesn't know is that her new case is tied inextricably to a much larger web of gang warfare and organised crime which infiltrates almost every aspect of London society.
    Members Reviews:
    Good Bait
John Harvey is an accomplished novelist with several fine pieces to his credit. Good Bait: A Novel is Harvey's latest offering and despite rave reviews and a good opening I found it ultimately disappointing.
Having read several of Harvey's previous efforts I found Good Bait had the strengths I have come to expect. Characters are finely drawn, interesting, with both flaws and admirable qualities. These are people I wanted to get to know, admire or despise and ultimately care about. The plot is robust, convoluted and complex. Dialogue is artfully used to move the story along. Two story lines, two smart cops, bring the reader glimpses of relationships hidden to the main characters but ultimately critical to the story's final resolution.
The first case involves the murder of a 17-year-old Moldovan boy found in a frozen pond, assigned to DCI Karen Shields and her team. But more bodies pile up and there is every appearance that all the mess is related. Separately, Cornwall DI Trevor Cordon is troubled by the death of a woman he's known, is her death in the London Tube suicide, accident or murder? Well outside his realm of responsibility he takes time off and calls in favors to poke around until he become embroiled in a plot bigger than he could have expected.
This is a police procedural. It gives a solid view of methods, problems and even technologies used by the UK police. It does this quite well. It is accurate, authentic and believable. But like many crime stories it is ultimately a character study and here it falls short. While there is a stark contrast between the thirty-ish Jamaican Shields and the fifty-ish Cordon these differences are never fully developed. There is only a hint of the racism and sexism Shields must have experienced. She is efficient, a sound investigator and manager but she is sterile and left this reader wanting to know more. Condon is aptly described as a lonely, divorced old cop waiting for his retirement but his emotions and motivations are at times vague. There are glimpses of the workings of his mind but they are all too brief.
I found the vast cast of characters, good guys and bad, a challenge to keep straight. The multitude of UK place and roads names, to this reader who is not familiar with the county, also became a distraction.
I read the Kindle version of Good Bait. I found spelling and formatting errors throughout. This novel came from a major publishing house. Don't they have editors or readers anymore? These errors, in addition to the British spelling, Harvey is after all a British author, were a distraction but unfortunately, I have come to expect these kinds of errors from Kindle books.
Good Bait, while a good read, was ultimately a disappointment. It needs more characterization and a conclusion that ties the initial murder back into the plot.

Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
On a rainy night in New York Citys Hells Kitchen, a woman throws a doll from the fifth-floor window of a gutted tenement, then leaps herself. From his own apartment a few blocks away, freelance photographer David Corman listens to the radio reports as they come over his headset. Corman is a man at the edge, threatened with eviction, besieged by his wifes attempt to regain custody of their daughter, yet reluctant to give up the life that permits him to roam the night. In the womans dying fall, he sees the chance to sell a story and perhaps buy some time. So he starts to probe deeper. Nothing prepares him for the odyssey he is about to undertake.
As the path leads, dark and twisted, from the meanest streets of New York to the homes of the rich, he struggles to uncover the life of the woman who leaped into the rain. The more layers he strips away, however, the more puzzles confront him, until ultimately, the search turns back onto himself: the dead womans true tale reveals shocking truths about his own life. At last, what began as a simple search for a story becomes a fight for his own soul.
Rich in character, complex in plot, The City When It Rains is a haunting, suspenseful novel of uncommon force, written with the stark beauty of the city it describes - passionate, resonant, a mystery in the deepest sense of the word.
    Critic Reviews:
Two-time Edgar award nominee Cook has written a haunting story of great emotional depth, which contains within it a first-rate detective story. Highly recommended.(Library Journal)

Nina, who had a brief affair with Barkley, is determined to prove Carole is the killer. But is she?
As the body count rises, no one seems safe. That includes Barkley, who is targeted by the killer. Can he survive? Or will he be forced to take his turn at bat?
    Members Reviews:
    This is a fantastic book
I'm running out of superlatives trying to convey what a great writer is turning out these excellent stories.
"Justice Served" really is a fantastic story. Whenever an accused wife batterer walks free in Judge Carole Cranston's courtroom, for whatever reason, he is shortly thereafter beaten to death and beyond with a baseball bat.
The murders are investigated by detective partners Ray Barkley and Nina Parker. Judge Cranston herself becomes the prime suspect after evidence is found in her residence.
The characters are great, the plot is clever, and the story deserves to be called a thriller.

    Very good story.
Fascinating story, interesting background, subtle and well read.
4 stars - which is my 9 out of 10. Don't throw 10s out easily!
    Not very good
If this book wasnt for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?
Somebody who can keep up with the fsst talking
What was most disappointing about Liza Marklunds story?
It's read so quickly I don't know enough about the story to be able to properly answer
How did the narrator detract from the book?
She spoke too quickly and didn't have a very engaging voice
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Bomber?
Don't know. Didn't finish reading it because it annoyed me so much
    Any additional comments?
    Can I return it please?
    Always download a sample
If I'd downloaded a sample I'd have saved my money. My mistake. It's pretty badly read by an actress so famous for her voice over on Master Chef that it's impossible to take her seriously here.
But putting aside the children's fairy story reading style the main problem with this awful book is it reads like it was written by a 10 year old.
We are treated to what amounts to a tedious attempt to portray life in a newspaper as seen through the eyes of an insufferable main character who you are praying will be murdered. Nothing is realistic. We have editors of a modern newspaper waxing lyrical about how the press must never write about the private lives of the famous. Police officers divulging top secret information to a journalist because she is a little bit insistent, unrealistic side characters popping up with irrelevant back stories then disappearing for ever.
I always finish a book once I've started I even read a Dan Brown book once and managed to crawl to the finish line. However I couldn't stomach this tripe for another minute and abandoned it just into the second half when I realised I didn't care if every single unrealistic unbelievable character in the story were to suddenly drop dead. Whodunnit? Don't care. Does the main character triumph over the cartoon-like baddies in her office? Couldn't give a hoot.
    Awful. Avoid.

This apparently motiveless killer has managed to target one of Beck's best detectives - and he, surely, would not have been riding that lethal bus without a reason.

Fast moving and easy to listen to
Where does The Laughing Policeman rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
    Amongst the top ten
What did you like best about this story?
A seemingly unfathomable mystery is gradually solved by painstaking police work with contributions from a team of individuals with very different personalities who bring their own slant on life into the equation. The portrayal of life in Sweden in the 1960's is also interesting in its perceptions.
What does Tom Weiner bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
The variety of accents and intonations help depict the different characters.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    No
    Any additional comments?
I have enjoyed several Martin Beck books as they have clarity and excellent character depictions.
    Quality crime fiction
Not as good as other books in series but still superior to crime novels.
    Good narration.

The cunning incendiary device that blew the roof off a Stockholm apartment not only interrupted the small, peaceful orgy underway inside, it nearly took the lives of the building's 11 occupants. And if one of Martin Beck's colleagues hadn't been on the scene, the explosion would have led to a major catastrophe because, for reasons nobody could satisfactorily explain, a regulation fire truck has vanished. Was it terrorism, suicide, or simply a gas leak? And what if, anything, did the explosion have to do with the peculiar death earlier that day of a 46-year-old bachelor whose cryptic suicide note consisted of only two words: "Martin Beck"?

Good Grief. Narration of characters IS dreadfull
We know that editing is a fiction. Market Research?
I can give TW a 4 star in Roseanna, Hate the american voice. But this with character squeaks and sqarks totally hides the story.
I do know these are good stories, do I have the stamina to ignore my ears to find it?
the mechanical Windows Voice on PDF has to be better than this.
    Disappointing
Terrible narration, delivery too fast, portrayal of characters not at all convincing. Very disappointing indeed. I so disliked the narration that I did not get into the story at all, so cannot decide whether it was worthwhile. I just felt I had wasted my money.
