    Title: Tangier
    Author: William Bayer
    Narrator: Martha Mellinger
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 18 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-30-12
    Publisher: Crossroad Press
Ratings: 2.5 of 5 out of 2 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
Tangier, a sweeping novel of romance and intrigue set in a fabled North African resort, may remind readers of the Alexandria Quartet. In this book Tangier is more than just a place; it is a city of unholy loves. Titled Europeans, Moroccan hustlers, aging former Nazis, decadents of every sort play out their rituals, competing for stunning lovers and social power.
Their schemes and passions are a subject of fascination to the hero of the book, a brilliant young police inspector. But even as he is fascinated he is also repelled, searching always to understand the privileged foreign colony, to unravel its weave of secrets. He finds the key, finally, in the person of a beautiful Eurasian woman, whose own mysterious past he manages to unveil. Through her eyes he comes to see Tangier in a new way. Sustained by her love he rediscovers the city and finds a different role in it for himself.
Against the drama of this love story other characters emerge: An America Consul becomes embroiled in an affair with his Vice-Consul's wife. A retired British character actor strives to preserve his dignity as his friends betray him and he feels an intimation of his death. A Canadian gossip columnist struggles not to lose himself in the gay world of Tangier. There is a young Frenchman corrupted by his love for an older woman; a radical Arab surgeon; a fifth-rate Soviet spy-a "burnt-out case"; squabbling writers; cruel social arbiters; a male prostitute named "Pumpkin Pie"
Watched closely by the police inspector as they slip in and out of each others' lives, these and other characters ignore the storm that gathers slowly above their town. In the end it sweeps them up with dizzying force. Tangier is revealed in a violent and dazzling finale.

William Bayer writes quite beautifully. His sentences flow as does his story, not in a straight line but in a series of curves and switchbacks that are seldom predictable [with two major exceptions]. Bayer knows Tangier --the Tangier of a few decades ago when he lived there with his [also brilliantly accomplished] cook-booking writing wife and within but perhaps not a real part of the Ex-pat community. We get to discover it in glimpses while we wind the narrow streets around hidden corners of the city and the plot. It is an endlessly interesting journey absorbing the history as well as the smells and looks and feel of Tangier. We experience the heat and the dryness as description and metaphor. The characters are often well drawn; there are a few exceptions. He creates an intimate portrait of a inward-looking, yet constantly changing community of privilege within a community of huge poverty, mainly by viewing its goings-on through various of its members' observations. Telling stories [or refusing to do so] about sex - who is having it in what form with whom and telling who else - is one of the main manners of exposition Bayer uses to create the action and the background and its endless back stories of the novel. His treatment of homosexuality would hardly be considered enlightened today, abut it is less dated than one might think. How the various characters practice and judge sexual behavior, and the distinctions each makes between sex for money, power or influence and consensual, sex - whether romantic or not - provides much of what we learn about them individually and as a community.

    Light but enjoyable
Enjoyable read, Tito Ihaka has always been one of my favoured characters in fiction and for those who've encountered him before, this book won't disappoint. nothing startling and nothing deep but plenty to make most smile.
Narration is very good, the odd lapse with pronunciation but one must make allowance for Australians, The voice used for Tito Ihaka is perfection for that character.
    kiwi killer

What does David Tredinnick bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
yes great at bringing it to life
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
so many kiwis so few time
Tito Ihaka... The detective every city needs!
I try to read all the bad reviews before making my mind on a purchase, but there weren't any for this book. I'm a bit of a fan of a good detective story, so naturally it appealed to me anyway.
Turns out to be a cracker! Tito Ihaka is a blunt, but to the point, no BS kind of detective. David tredinnick does his voice absolutely perfect!!! apart from the occasional lapse of the new zealand accent. In my opinion, 5 out of 5 in all aspects.
It'd be good to see all of the tito ihaka book series on audio too!

    Publisher's Summary:
Dr. Gregory is starting to feel settled, hopeful that a long period of upheaval in his private life is behind him. He refocuses his energy on his clinical psychology practice, where a beguiling new patient captivates him, but the interlude of calm doesnt last. Devastating fires are threatening Boulder. Alans dear friend Diane is showing signs of a long-simmering emotional collapse. And Alans most pressing fear - the exposure of a dangerous secret - has become a peril too real to ignore.
A new witness has surfaced, causing the police to reopen their investigation into the suicide of a woman named Justine Winter Brown. When Alan and his equally culpable friend, Sam Purdy, inadvertently disclose their involvement in her death to a stranger, any confidence they feel about riding out a renewed investigation evaporates. The trail that leads to Alan and Sam, once cold, has turned white-hot.
With his vulnerability mounting daily, Alan suspects that his mesmerizing new patient may be the catalyst that could cause everything he treasures - his marriage, his family, his friendships, and his future - to implode. As flames lick at the city, the story hurtles toward a shocking conclusion that leaves the stage set for a jaw-dropping last act - the upcoming final book in the two-decades-long Alan Gregory saga.

    Comme ci, comme ca
I am a long-time fan of the Alan Gregory series and have been looking forward to this book for a while.
I have mixed feelings. I'm still thinking about the last part of the book when multiple storylines collide. As always, I love the dialogue. I was disappointed because people started acting out of character (SPOILER ALERT) as in - would Sam say anything to Alan about Frederick in a hospital room? Would Lauren talk about an ongoing case? Also, there were a few coincidences that stretched my ability to accept the story (SPOILER ALERT) as in - what are the odds that someone who appeared to be in a coma really wasn't?
Having said that, I am still thinking about the book - which means that I was touched by it.
Not the best of the series
I have to agree with other reviewers that this is defnitely NOT White's best work. I must have missed a book or two in the series as a lot of the references to the past aren't making any sense. Also, I'm positive White killed off Alan's business partner, Diane, in a previous novel, but here she is alive and unwell yet again. The dilemma Gregory finds himself in is so out of character for this straight, uptight character as to be unbelievable. The only character that is truly lovable is Sam Purdy. That being said, I still managed to keep turning pages and found the dialog entertaining.I think Alan Gregory is more human in this one and has some humerous moments.
    crass commercialism
I have enjoyed this series even when some of the plots have seemed a little far-fetched. I have loved the character development. This book misses the mark. The setting in wildfire season is promising, but the story goes south quickly. You have two characters who throughout the series have had each other's back doing something so stupid that it seems totally out of character. From there we revisit one of the lamest plots in the serie. In the fragmented story line we meet lots of characters who could have been interesting but weren't all that well developed. Then there is the "end." Except there isn't one.

    Publisher's Summary:
Jack Doyle, former advertising man, amateur boxer, and Chicago racetrack publicist, undertakes a new job in the world of Thoroughbred horse racing: jockey agent. His client is Mickey Sheehan, a seventeenyearold female riding phenomenon from Ireland, who has decided to try her luck in the States. She and Doyle prove an effective team, until someone secretly begins administering dangerous illegal medications to horses.
In his quest to identify the culprit, the shrewd, irreverent, and always opinionated Doyle gets help from his friends Moe Kellman, furrier to the Mob; trainer Ralph Tenuta, himself the target of a blackmailer; and young veterinarian Ingrid McGuire, a greatly talented horse communicator. Meanwhile, Jack and Moe become coowners of a promising, bargainpriced horse named Plotkin, who provides several thrills, not all of them welcome. Then as Plotkin is entered in a big race, the milliondollar Heartland Downs Futurity, the sibling rivalry between Mickey and her occasionally racemanipulating brother Kieran, one of Irelands top jockeys, flares up and comes to a climax with Mickey aboard Plotkin.
From Chicagos Heartland Downs racetrack to New Yorks famed Saratoga Race Course, Doyle is detoured to Mob chieftain Fifi Bonadios lavish yacht in Chicagos Belmont Harbor. Will the favor he agrees to do for Fifi get him killed, or will it be his persistent push for answers to the horse doping?
As an amateur investigator in the world of American racing, Doyle is sometimes mistaken but always dogged in his search for answers. The challenges he faces in attempting to halt the horse drugging and the threat to Tenutas life are the most daunting of his colorful career.

    Solid first effort
I read what I thought was Matthew Klein's first novel, Con Ed, a couple of weeks ago. Loved it! Then I discovered that Klein had written an earlier novel that had been published in Britain but not in the U.S. So I was pleased that I was able to get a copy of Switchback via Amazon.com.
The most interesting thing about reading Switchback is to see how far Klein has come as a writer in just a couple of years. Like Con Ed, Switchback is replete with engaging characters, breathtaking plot twists
(with an exposition clear enough so that even an easily confused reader like me doesn't get lost), snappy dialog, and confident narrative. But Switchback lacks the word-smithing cleverness that makes Con Ed such a remarkable book to read. (I had to stop and read passages of Con Ed to my girlfriend, who enjoyed them even though she had no idea how they fit into the overall plot. I had no such temptations while I was reading Switchback.)
If you haven't read either of Klein's books, read Switchback before Con Ed, so you'll be reading them in the order in which they were written. I think you'll get more out of Switchback that way, because it is an enjoyable read, and not just for a first effort. And then, when you read Con Ed, you'll be pleasantly surprised by how far Klein has grown as a writer from one book to the next. And if you're like me, you'll be eagerly awaiting his next effort to see if this happy trend will continue.

If Someone Swaps a Book of Yours For This, You'll Be Telling Them, No Switchbacks!
This is a sensational novel that half way through does a complete 180 in the storyline with an even more interesting story taking over from one that was already very interesting and good.

Hersheys only defense against this onslaught is to get the information that will put Blake behind bars.

    Shell Scott Trio
âAnd listen you, Iâm older than I look.â
âThen she shut the door and I thought about sitting down on the grass and rolling around howling, and I thought about jumping up and running back and crashing through the door, but what I did was go out to the Cad and lean my head against the cool steering wheel for a couple seconds, then shiver spasmodically and put the buggy in gear thinking that Jules Osborne should have told me more about Diane, and offered me at least twenty thousand dollars.â â Hot-Rock Rumble
This is a terrific trio of Shell Scott stories from Richard Prather. Pratherâs Shell Scott series reads like a slightly mellower version of Spillaneâs Mike Hammer, but with a wry sense of humor. Between the luscious tomatoes and pulp violence there is quite a bit of humor in Pratherâs narrative, the hard-bitten detective Shell Scott his voice. Three For the Shroud is a trio of shorter Shell Scott stories, but if youâre collecting these wildly popular books from yesteryear, donât skip it, because itâs a blast.
Blood Ballot is the first of the stories and might be the best, but only by a hair. Shell is working for Senator Paul Hershey in this one, trying to protect him from the corrupt Blake, who is attempting to get the goods on Hershey so he can smear him in the press and make his boy a shoe-in this election. Blake plays rough, and there are two strikingly different hot tomatoes for Shell to deal with in Lorry Weston and Martita Delgado. Evidence in a safe everybody wants and a kidnapping come into play before Shell wraps this one up. Great fun.
The second tale, Dead Giveaway, is quirkier and funnier, and is also good fun. When a mousey girl named Ilona walks into Shellâs office looking for her missing husband, her story leads him to the conclusion someone is out to kill her. Shell soon has his hands full with more than one Ilona, as he goes from girly show to girly show trying to figure out whatâs going on. Itâs a tough job, but somebodyâs got do it. A snazzy redhead mistakes Shell for a doctor in this one and itâs hilarious! Will Shell survive the Hungarian Hurricane? Will a big inheritance turn an ugly duckling into a swan? Youâll have to read it to find out, but the middle story is not to be taken too seriously, itâs just good fun.
The third tale in the trilogy, Hot-Rock Rumble, is on a par with Blood Ballot. Shellâs trying to recover a stolen necklace from a guyâs mistress so she doesnât start talking to his wife.

There was only one of him but he seemed to outnumber me. He was so big I was surprised his feet didn't leave holes behind him in the concrete. "Shell Scott", he rumbled. "Shake." I hardly dared. Great Series
First person P.I. story the way it should be. Funny and fun to read.
I like Shell Scott detective stories. And this is typical of those stories.
Don't look for suprises in this story. It is fun to read, without being gross and messy. A good guy dies early on, and you wonder how Shell Scott survives. But the story moves along and I am glad I read it.
    A Fabulous series
Shell Scott finds himself in the middle of a mob convention in Acapulco. On a case to find material that is being used to blackmail a union leader, he finds himself helping a dame who wants a divorce from her husband, a Mob hit man. In addition, he's involved with military secrets, a beautiful Mexican entertainer and becomes the star attraction at a night club attended by the mobsters. All this in less than 150 pages of action and humor. Prather created a unique series in his Shell Scott books, the antithesis to the darker moodier Mike Hammer stories. Scott is a must for any PI fan.
