    Saratoga Detective
This series is terrific and I do not understand why Dobyns and his detective Charlie Bradshaw are not much more well known. This issue of the series is especially strong and works an interesting angle. When a body turns up from an unsolved case Charlie "screwed up" 18 years ago turns up under Jacko's Pool Hall in Saratoga Springs, Charlie takes on the case. In the process he confronts the mistakes made by his younger self.
Charlie is a fascinating lead character and the book is populated with believable and sometimes hilarious secondary characters.
I lived in the area in the 1970s and can attest to the fact that Dobyns gets the scene and times right.
A quieter take on the PI mystery
The Saratoga stories follow the life and times of Charlie Bradshaw, a Saratoga policeman of 20 years in the first one, who eventually resigns from the force and becomes a private detective. Charlie is a likeable man, and it is easy to care about what happens to him. Other characters are eccentric, bull-headed, flamboyant, shifty, criminal, caring greedy or stupid, as fits the story, but always interesting.
These books develop Charlie's story across the series, as well as each being a stand-alone mystery. I think it is best to start with the first one and move through them in order, although you could pick one up part way through the series without becoming confused. I don't think these books set the world on fire, but they keep you engaged and interested to the end, and leave you feeling like the world is not such a bad place, in spite of some of the bad things that happen in it.
This book involves Charlie revisiting an old case, which it turns out he got very wrong, when the skull of a woman turns up on a construction site. The woman disappeared 20 years earlier, shortly after embezzling a lot of money from the company she worked for. The investigating officer at the time - Charlie - decided she had run off to South America with a lover, and the case was effectively closed until her remains turned up. Revisiting his case notes, Charlie finds himself bemused at his meanness and prejudice and spends quite a lot of time ruminating about the kind of person he was then. As another review said, this book is quite philosophical, but I liked it, especially Charlie's conversation with his ex-wife about the past, and how we can all view ourselves and situations differently over time. I thought the bad guy was pretty easy to spot, so there wasn't a lot of mystery but it was an interesting read, nevertheless.
Trope-Busting Detective Novel About Real People
A trope-busting tale of an Everyman private detective who can solve a present-day crime only by reconciling the facts with the incorrect assumptions he made as a desperately unhappy cop two decades before. Charlie Bradshaw is flawed but real, leavened by the cheerful obnoxiousness of sidekick Victor Plotz and the good-hearted goofiness of operative Eddie Gillespie, and ultimately his stubbornness and his human growth carries him through. The seventh of ten in a series of superb crime novels set in Saratoga.

    Murder's Bold Inscription
"Whoever had broken into the shop might just have gone upstairs afterwards, might just be there still...My first reaction was anger: I wanted to roar up the stairs, only I could hear Barnabas saying, the way he used to when I was little: "Temper, Dido! Count to twenty-nine..."
Selling rare books has its moments, but few are anything close to thrilling - except when Dido Hoare's scoundrel of an ex-husband suddenly reappears and puts a pulse of excitement in the air.
But events go from interesting to intense when someone ends up murdered and the culprit seems to think Dido has something worth killing for, too.
With the help of her father, Barnabas, a retired academic with a penchant for mysteries, Dido may be able to divert the killer long enough to figure out who wants her dead and why. Recovering from a heart attack, the irrepressible Barnabas is taking chances that are likely to give Dido a coronary of her own, and give the police a bad case of indigestion. But as Dido and Barnabas are about to learn, every crime has its victims and its payoffs - it's just a matter of being on the right side of the bookshelf before everything comes tumbling down.

    ending??
Maybe it's me, or a glitch with the download, but this book has no ending, no resolution, no nothing. So I slog my way through, somewhat interested in the mystery and then suddenly it's over, with no real resolution of the mystery! Who did it? I'm tempted to ask for my money back.

    Scary and tense.
Though there is gore and pain and lip-curling scenes, the fascination with Steve Williams and his abilities over-rides all else. First and foremost I am a paranormal fan who likes mystery/detective stories.
At first I was amazed that anyone would write with such graphic description of the torture scenes, but then I remembered all the Stephen King books Iâve read. This author, while not yet at the King pinnacle, has the same style of writing, her stories scare the you-know-what out of a person, and are horrifying enough that, though sometimes you wish you could, you canât put them down. Descriptions of events, characters, and surroundings allow the reader to be placed right in the story, which is what makes it all so scary.
I look forward to reading the rest of the Steve Williams series and any other that this author cares to come up with.
    Awesome Page Turner!!!
This book was excellent. I read it in 1 sitting. I did find that is helps to read the 3 books that are in the "Steve Williams" series that are before this book before hand in order that they were written. It makes the story much easier to follow knowing the past things that these people have been through. I started reading this and decided to read the 3 preceding novels first and it make a huge difference. They are all greatly priced and well worth it. I read all 4 (Dark Reckoning, Vengeance, Hunting Season, and Georgia Reign) in 2 days and can't wait til the next one is out. I would recommend this book and all other "Steve Williams" novels to anyone who loves fast paced thrillers that have the right combination of horror and paranormal experiences in it. (the order that the Steve Williams novels are at the bottom of the page. There is supposed to be another one after this, which I am anxiously awaiting) Enjoy and get ready for a wonderful ride with these!!!
J.E. Taylor's books about Steve Williams are AWESOME!!!
I can't seem to get enough of this series of books by JE Taylor. The writing style is easy to read; easy to understand and follow; full of intrigue; great plot that makes you THINK you know all the solutions, but with all the twists and turns, you are surprised at every turn. The story location, description, character information is so clear that you REALLY feel like you know each person and can picture images of Georgia. I had a hard time turning off my Kindle until I finished reading the book. I immediately started reading the next one. Great mystery novel that is intriguing but doesn't give you nightmares.

Lang's 'Standing In Death's Shadow' Is Gripping
After reading Ken Lang's first true crime novel, "Walking Among the Dead: True Crimes From A Homicide Detective" with great enjoyment and interest, I was keenly awaiting Mr. Lang's latest installation, "Standing In Death's Shadow" with great anticipation. I not only have an interest in true crime writing, but as a multiple best-selling author writing in the world of international espionage, I have found Mr. Lang's writing so compelling and insightful, that not only am thoroughly educated when reading his writing, but I become educated by this former homicide detective due to his vast and deep knowledge of the world of investigation and the familiarity that comes with events leading up to that.
There are several things that Lang does exceptionally well, and I think this is critical to good storytelling. First and foremost, Mr. Lang has developed a penchant to allow the reader to feel as if they are part of the homicide detective squad when mayhem breaks out. Unquestionably, in order to keep my interest when reading a thriller, I want to feel as if I am a character is the story. Without it, I have a habit of wading through a story. With it, I am there and I am feeling the action, the spirit, and the soul of the characters around me. And it is this unique capability that Lang possesses: the ability of dropping the reader into the story - where, well you do not want to leave. In "Walking Among the Dead: True Crimes From A Homicide Detective", Lang demonstrated this incredible writing gift; however, in his superb "Standing In Death's Shadow", the award winning writer clearly has sharpened his writing skills in such a unique way: there is still the cop-on-the-beat mentality wrapped in a very sophisticated series of dialogues and retrospectives.

    A Romp Through Coastal Maine
Likeable characters with an interesting storyline make this tale of yachting in Maine worth the time. I enjoyed the references to classic literature and the book was laugh-out-loud funny once or twice.
    Good read
I enjoy the older mysteries as the plot is usually good and they do no depend on foul language explicit sex or violence to mask a poorly written book.
    Good winter's night read
book arrived as expected. Enjoyed the mystery, which filled a gap in a series I'd started.
Double Murder on the Maine Coast
Summer in Maine with all the delights of coastal living, spiced up by two murders involving visitors, artists, and native Mainers who worry about the invasion of people from "away." Humor, action, and well rounded characters add to the reading pleasure.
    The Down East Murders
I enjoyed the setting of her murder and the relationships of her main characters, which are developing, are for the most part quite unusual. Especially of her love interest.

    Members Reviews:
    A very good start
This is a very good start to what I hope will be a great series. The characters are likable and realistic. The plot very entertaining. The two lead characters get into Lucy and Ethal like trouble and predictably, the best friend says, tell the truth just don't say I was there. This book is funny and heart felt. I hope I won't have to wait until next year for the next book in this series.
Liked the story - but not crazy about the narrator
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The narrator and the editing. The quality of the recording and editing was poor compared to other audiobooks. I could hear where the recording had been edited. The volume of the narrator was not consistent. At times I could hear a humming noise in the background which was distracting. Except that I wanted to hear what was going to happen in the story, I came very close to turning off the book several times.
What didnt you like about Holly Fieldings performance?
It was very hard to distinguish between the different characters - very monotone reading. I didn't feel that the narrator became the characters.
Do you think Getting Skinny needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
I think this could be the start of a series of mysteries. I like the idea of a mystery solving chef.
    Any additional comments?
I probably won't listen to another book featuring this narrator.
    TEDIOUS
The main character is whiny and needy, the plot incredibly boring, don't waste your credit

    Publisher's Summary:
In Cold Comfort Scott Mackay fashions a classy cop story from three distinct yet intertwined narrative lines: a senseless and probably unsolveable murder, a harsh political decision to reorganize the police force, and the private lives of people worth caring about.
In the midst of a February cold snap and the political maneuverings of a new government that threatens the jobs of good officers including his young partner, Detective Barry Gilbert of the Metropolitan Toronto Police Force Homicide Squad is called to investigate the murder of Cheryl Latham, the stepdaughter of a prominent government official. Cheryl, her body frozen, is found on a snow-swept pier at the harbor with a bullet in her chest.
Autopsy reveals a bizarre clue - Cheryl froze to death first and was shot later, after she was already dead. So begins a baffling trail of evidence.
As the strange and perplexing evidence mounts, Gilbert feels he's being led from clue to clue by an outside ringmaster. Probing deeper in Cheryl's dark past, he discovers the terrible secret she's hidden all her life. He's forced to confront his own values, and learns that even the best detectives can lose their judgment at the most crucial moments - often with the deadliest of consequences.
Written with grace and a fine sense of detail, Cold Comfort will establish Scott Mackay as among the best new authors of crime fiction.

    Release date: 01-18-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 14 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
In Lydia Cooper's wry and absorbing debut novel, we are introduced to Mickey Brandis, a brilliant 28-year-old doctoral candidate in medieval literature who is part Lisbeth Salander and part Dexter. She lives in her parents' garage and swears too often, but she never complains about the rain or cold, she rarely eats dead animals, and she hasn't killed a man since she was 10. Her life is dull and predictable but legal, and she intends to keep it that way.
But the careful existence Mickey has created in adulthood is upended when she is mysteriously led to a condemned house where she discovers an exquisitely mutilated corpse. The same surreal afternoon, she is asked by a timid, wall-eyed art student to solve a murder that occurred 20 years earlier. While she gets deeper and deeper into the investigation, she begins to lose hold on her tenuous connection to reality - to her maddening students and graduate thesis advisor; to her stoic parents, who are no longer speaking; to her confused, chameleon-like adolescent brother; and to her older brother, Dave, a zany poet who is growing increasingly erratic and keenly interested in Mickey's investigation.
Driven by an unforgettable voice, and filled with razor-sharp wit and vivid characters, My Second Death is a smart, suspenseful novel and a provocative examination of family, loyalty, the human psyche, and the secrets we keep to save ourselves.

    WONDERFUL!!
Loved this listen! I was hooked immediately and kept guessing throughout the story. Characters are very well done by the narrator and the story will keep you listening. I was through this within a day and a half. Worth the credit!
Strange, Intense- the sociopath is the sane one!
If you could sum up My Second Death in three words, what would they be?
Unexpected! The woman, Michaela, has antisocial personality disorder. This story is told from her perspective.
What was one of the most memorable moments of My Second Death?
When the true nature of her relationship with her brother David was revealed. Although she has a personality disorder (and probably some kind of developmental disorder on the autism spectrum), Her brother is the true madman. One can sense it from the story, but just wait......
What does Dina Pearlman bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
At first, I found her abrasive and flat - then I realized that was Micki's character. Perlman actually develops a broad range of characters, from the perfect mother, the gruff father, to her insane brother. She is excellent at creating a whole character with her voice. The more I listened, the more I appreciated her characterization of Micki.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
There is a moment in the book where she realizes that at times, her difference from others allows her to see truth more clearly. I don't want to spoil the story by going into detail, but it has to do with the cat that she let run out of the apartment. I was horrified, yet understood her plight, realizing that she was different, and unless she wanted to prolong suffering, others were going to see her difference and be horrified at what they were witnessing.

From Colombia to a hidden cove in Newfoundland, modern day Robin Hood Peter Kerrivan and his ship of merry men are tracked by a NASA satellite, set up by the cop who couldn't bring him to ground, RCMP Inspector Harold Mitchell. But has Mitchell gone too far? He's hired unscrupulous ex-CIA Rudy Meyers... who needs big bucks to fund his Cuban reinvasion force. Senator Publio Victor Paez has put all his chips on Kerrivan and Meyers, handing them the single biggest treasure ever to leave the shores of South America: $300,000,000 worth of Colombian sensemilla. Betrayal, murder and chaos stalk 'Captain Jackpot' and Johnny Nighthawk from Montreal to Cartagena, with a stop-off in Miami, but when they slip through the Coast Guard net, officials in high places must scramble to cover up. Even Kerrivan's own Toronto lawyer, James Peddigrew, is willing to sell his client down-river for a price: the release of cocaine-smuggling stewardess Marianne Larochelle.
The high crimes reach right to the top with Canadian cabinet minister Jean Luis Lesard sweating to cover up at any cost: Mitchell's man Meyers, with U.S. State Department immunity, may have dealt the drugs and murdered Kevin Kelly and a Cuban-collaborator while in the employ of Her Majesty, the Queen. Good cops RCMP Sergeant Theo O'Doul and DEA Special Agent Jessica Flaherty are the only two in the mix with a hope of solving this tangle of High Crimes and bringing Kelly's murderer to justice.

Where does High Crimes rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
It ranks close to the top of my reading list. This is my first reading on so much drugs, betrayals and cover-up. Very interesting and suspenseful.
What was one of the most memorable moments of High Crimes?
There were several - I especially live Pete Kerrivan who was willing to sacrifice himself for his men.
Have you listened to any of Steve Scherf and Maggie Scherf s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No this is my first and it was very good. I loved the narration and the distinction of characters, makes for a better listening
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I loved how the crew on the tug all stuck together and supported each other. I also lovved how they rescued Kerrivan on the way to jail.
    Any additional comments?
I loved the narration and the distinction of characters, makes for a better listening Was a little hesitant about reading but very glad that I did. This was a very good reader and also relevant to todays drug invested society, full of corruption and deceptions. Marianne Laruchelle, what a character!
    Sensational, complex, wise-cracking drama
There are high stakes in this clever and fast-paced crackpot crime caper.
