a new sleuth on the scene
This book was an easy-to-read,fun mystery. I think it would please many cozy mystery fans. The main character, college professor Dr.Pamela Barnes reminded me of a combination of Miss Marple, Hannah Swenson and Goldie Schultz. She was thrust into searching for the culprit who murdered one of her co-workers. Pamela was the one who, with the help of her graduate assistant, discovered the body so that threw her right in there.
Her expertise in her field (the study of sound) and her determination to use that expertise enabled her ferret out the murderer.
I liked the character development; particularly a rather annoying detective who finally does allow Dr. Barnes to enter into the investigation. Her loving, supportive husband sounded very much like Goldie Schultz's husband, with the reversal that HE is the good cook. Rocky, like Schultz, keeps warning his wife to stay out of it, for her own safety and of course our detective can't let go of the need to find the answers in spite of his many warnings.
There are a few recipes included and their simplicity made me want to try them even though I am a cooking disaster in the kitchen.
A light, fun, and interesting read made me want to stay up all night to finish the book.
Some people would kill for tenure
Blake University is small but thanks to Dr. Charlotte Clark it's Psychology department is rich from her generous donations but still someone has seen it fit to kill her in the computer lab she paod for, but why?
Enter Pamela Barnes and ehr graduate student Kent who discover her strangled while do doing research and now the search to find out who in the department wants her dead that badly. Everyone from the department head had fought with her just prior to her death.
Patrica Rockwell pens a great whodunit and why story. She has created likable yet very mysterious characters in Dr. Barnes and the faculty and her family to make Sounds of murder a fantastic fast paced and enjoyable read. I give this paper 5 A+s and look forward to reading the other books in the series.
Possibly a good story buried in digressions and poor formatting
College psychology professor Pamela Barnes finds a famous colleague murdered in the psych lab and uses a recording the victim was making to hunt the killer.
Rockwell, like many authors, hasn't learned to make the story her main focus. While the mystery itself was moderately interesting, I got so tired of the endless digressions that I quit about halfway through. Pamela's happy marriage and problems with her teenaged daughter and house furnishings were neither particularly interesting nor relevant to the murder. (I skipped most of the info-dump lecture on interpreting audiology, too.) The occasional formatting problems, where 2-3 paragraphs together have every line indented, didn't help.
