    Publisher's Summary:
The last thing "Munch" Mancini needs is a visit from her ex-lover, "Sleaze" Garillo, a shady hustler looking for a favor.
Munch is a hardworking, no-nonsense auto mechanic in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles. She's recently shed nearly every addiction known to man and woman. Munch is doing her best each day to keep the sins of her past behind her, but it seems that there's always some old friend or temptation blocking her path.
When Sleaze drops out of sight under troubling circumstances, Munch can't help but get involved. He may have been the victim of a sniper attack on the freeway. The cops are after her for answers. Munch doesn't have any - yet. But she's the only one with the friends and connections to track down the truth.
That is just what she's been avoiding, a dangerous detour down memory lane. Finding out about one former friend means that Munch will need to revisit other lingering faces from her past - friend and foe - and deal with them once and for all.
Nobody's tougher than Munch Mancini, but even she's unsure if she has what it takes to make it through this risky situation without ruining her new life, or losing it altogether. She's used to battling dope smugglers, bikers, and the law, but this is her first time trying to guard an innocent soul in the mix - the baby daughter Sleaze left behind.
In Barbara Seranella's rough-and-tumble new thriller, No Offense Intended, a hazardous trail of crime, truth, and consequences spirals to a deadly standoff.

Great fiction with a non-fiction flare.
Nice to see a story about a recovering drug addict who has found a Living God to help her. The author truly captures the essence of an addict's journey to clean up her life. I know a woman like Munch and she too is is succeeding. Plot is realistic. Characters are believable.
Even better than No Human Involved
It doesn't have quite the shock impact of No Human Involved because Munch is a reformed character from the beginning. On the other hand the climactic action scene and dialogue are more plausible. Some wonderful writing about auto mechanics and descriptions like an abandoned building where " a morning glory vine flush with large purple blooms had taken over the Center's back fence and formed a web between two palm trees" Her relationships with children and religion add an extra dimension.
    Really lovin' Munch
I can really relate to the era in this series. Love how Munch balances work, motherhood and solving crime. The twists and turns the story takes keeps you involved and not wanting to put the book down.
    Munch 2.0
Munch in trouble? Never! Well, actually, always. This second book is as real as the first, and very cool. I like the fact that alchoholism and addiction are dealt with realisticly, and prostitution isn't given the warm and fuzzy treatment... so many people seem to think it's cool or something these days. And unlike some characters who've never done a bad thing in their lives, Munch has reason to be in cruddy situations. But she's trying, and working hard at it.
So basicaly the same good stuff as the first, only a bit further along in the story.
    No offense intended
This book took a lot of concentration. Munch had a lot going on in her life. Lots of twist and turns, but an interesting book.

A man is burnt alive in a suburban garden shed. DI Zigic and DS Ferreira are called in from the Peterborough Hate Crimes Unit to investigate the murder. Their victim is quickly identified as a migrant worker and a man several people might have had good reason to see dead.

    Returned book
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
I did not like the narrator and found the beginning very boring.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Boredom was my main reaction I was disappointed.
    Dark and depressing but good
A long way from Midsomer Murder ..... No cosy murders (if there ever is). This is a dark and interesting and a rather depressing story of today.
Not a lot of interest in this one
I chose this as it has had good reviews on Amazon. It seemed interesting to combine crime, immigration and the Baltic States. The story did not seem to flow very well, with the characters quitestereotypical. They appeared to think and act as expected with no surprise. I did not enjoy the writing style or felt that the mystery was good. The description of Peterborough was detailed. I have never been there so I do not know how accurate this is.
Overall quite a middle of the road story. I would not rush out to get another book by this author.
    Dull as Ditchwater
Just goes to show you should not believe the hype.
This book is dull, formulaic & deeply derivative. It has nothing new for the reader or listener and takes an awfully long time to reach a predictable conclusion.
Given there are other far superior authors out there with fresh offerings like Zoe Ferraris & Barbara Nadel for instance - I don't know why Audible bothered with this bland offering.
    Don't waste your money.
    Boring !!!!!
Ok but this is the same story has been told a thousand times before and so cliched it hurts, not a single thing original ! Sorry

Couldn't take it. Stopped listening at chapter 5
Would you try another book from Robert Stohn and/or Smokey Rivers?
    No on both counts
What could Robert Stohn have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Learn to write. Seriously, I've never seen a writer depend so heavily on adjectives and cliches. Also, it would help if he actually learned about his subject so when he writes about the technical aspects of the plot, his (mis)use of the terminology isn't so cringeworthy.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
I listened to this book with my wife and her brother on a long road trip. The narrator didn't bother me all that much, but both wife and brother were complaining about the lack of affect in the narrator's voice before the end of the first chapter. They also commented on his inability to produce a realistic Italian accent.
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Not really. Maybe it could have later in the book... I just couldn't struggle through to find out.
    Any additional comments?
I'm SHOCKED this book had 5 stars. It makes me question the integrity of Audible's rating system.
Intensely Gripping with an Engaging Mystery
What made the experience of listening to Cipher the most enjoyable?
"Cipher" is one of those novels that manages to very quickly hook you with a vivid and intensely gripping story... only to turn it on its head and then take you on a wildly action-packed ride as Detective Jonathan Grace finds himself on the hunt for the mysterious cipher, a program that could very well be a massive tool of destruction in the wrong hands. The novel is well-written with a lush writing style and an engaging plot; using authentic characters and strong dialogue, the author propels the plot along with amazing skill.
What does Smokey Rivers bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
What I liked about the audiobook and the narration is that it adds a new element to the story, helping to bring dimension, emotion and nuances to the novel that I might have missed if I just read the book. The narrator has a gift for sucking the audience in and keeping you eagerly listening from start to finish.
    Cipher
Would you listen to Cipher again? Why?
I recently moved about a 45 minute drive from my work. Audiobooks are definitely my new best friends!
Cipher was the first one I listened to on my long drives. Honestly, it was a little crazy listening to a book and driving.

Whelan goes looking for the big picture among the culture vultures of Melbourne's art world and quickly learns there is nothing abstract about a loaded gun. A romantic comedy and drop-dead thriller, The Brush-Off mixes high art with low blows.
    Members Reviews:
    Perfect narration!
    Any additional comments?
I read Shane Maloney back in high school and listening to this audiobook brought it all back. He's witty, he's political, and completely safe - no terror-stricken 21st century for Shane Maloney, but the laidback incompetent local politics of the late 80s. He does tend to do that thing that crime writers do, where women are attracted to the sleuth/detective/total amateur like mozzies to human flesh, but hey. Apart from the first chapter this shtick doesn't get on my nerves as much as it usually does. I think Shane Maloney captures Australia well, although I might be saying that because he doesn't shy away from talking about migrant communities. It adds a new dimension to the usual Anglo-Aboriginal dichotomy in Aussie novels.
And how good is Rupert Degas? The second he got to Angelo Agnelli, that character seemed to walk whole-bodied out of my headphones - first time for me, but very much appreciated. He gets Shane Maloney's sense of humour. Between the two of them, my gut almost ruptured with laughter at the octopus scene.

Part of a great series !!! Love the metaphors and puns ... well-written Aussie political and crime fiction with a good plot!! Wish he had more than 4 books in this series....
    Excellent read.
Quintessentially Australian, and not trying to be Hollywood superstar stuff. Likeable narrator, comic plot, underplayed drama. Careful if you read it on public transport - you might miss your stop. I laughed out loud more than once.

    Scraps From the Table
I just discovered the Chet and Bernie Series and becoming first intrigued, then converted into an acolyte of the cult of the canine detective. So to continue the theme I noticed this novella and it's diminutive price tag so I drank the Kool-Aid and ordered this selection. All I can say is that Sully and Dale are no Chet and Bernie.
After attempting to listen intently to the first forty minutes finding myself continually zoning out I began to read Audible reviews hoping that something about this audiobook would grab my attention; that didn't happen. Perhaps it was Johnathan Yen who possess a smooth easy voice; perhaps it was the writing but my attention just kept slipping away from the narration. There was nothing egregiously terrible about the book (at least that I can recall) but therein lies the rub; there's nothing particularly memorable either. Purchase at your own risk unless you're in need an inexpensive sleep aid.

    Members Reviews:
A bit on the unbelievable side.
I will again give a Macbeth mystery 5 stars because, again, you can't put it down. However, I think the author should stick to small town murders and stay away from a totally different genre of big city drug crime, drug lords, etc. It just didn't ring true that big city police department special drug units would entrust any type of operation to a small town constable with no experience. And, of course, one of the small town police biggies can't keep his mouth shut and tells someone who simply can't be trusted. From the little I know about drug unit operations in big city police departments this just would not happen. Too risky. And the rescue by the local people just was unbelievable. However, I enjoyed the book. Just hope from now on in this series she confines the crime situations to something more believable.
Fun series. Treat yourself and read them all
Beaton's books are always quick, clever, and highly entertaining. I was surprised at how invested I've become in the series characters. Despite the fast read, Beaton manages to build a complex, 3-dimensional protagonist that you are compelled to root for--and read about. Over and over.
Fun series. Treat yourself and read them all; you won't be sorry.
c beaton novel on Hamish Macbeth that I find boring. the plot is dragging me to sleep
this is one m.c beaton novel on Hamish Macbeth that I find boring. the plot is dragging me to sleep.
    drug addict
Actually I did not enjoy this book as much as the rest of the Hamis MacBeth I have read. It seemed out of his baliwick to go undercover as a drug dealer, adopt foul language, get tricked into going with a prostitute, no matter how young and seemingly innocent she was, and hang with the really rotten underground type. None of those things are the Hamish MacBeth I have become accustomed to. But then I have never enjoyed books or movies involving drug use.
I like the kindly but firm, look the other way when it isn't harmful, PC MacBeth, who loves the people under his watch, and does everything he can to help them all. I wish he was real.
    Good read
I really like this series.....I enjoy the humour and enjoy the way Hamish goes about solving his crimes. Sometimes I get frustrated by his lack of luck in the girlfriend department but I guess that is how it is! There was a television series quite a few years ago and it was brilliant. It was called 'Macbeth'. And there is no swearing and even though people die....there is no gratuitous violence or sex as in so many books these days.

    Boring
I purchased this book several months ago, hoping that I could begin a new mystery series. I was wrong. This book was boring and a struggle to finish. The mystery elements had potential, but the book's pacing was too slow. Hobart was uninteresting and Marvia wasn't fleshed out as a character. If you would like an interesting mystery series with an interracial romance thrown in, try the "Lizzie Stuart" mysteries by Frankie Y. Bailey.
... book elements in this mystery were entertaining and I love World War II era comics and references

    Publisher's Summary:
No matter the season, the Philadelphia private school where Amanda Pepper teaches English is never a center of tranquility. But with Halloween and the annual Mischief Night party only days away, the hope is that nothing more than old-fashioned vandalism and pranks will take place.
No such luck. Trouble erupts long before the witching hour, as the school is plagued by a series of mishaps ranging from the trivial to the potentially deadly - and most of which seem to center on a group of popular seniors.
A fire alarm rings during a test; all the orange and black paint is stolen from the art room; the mustard packets are taken from the cafeteria. Perhaps more serious: chemicals and equipment disappear from the science lab, as does one of Amanda's exams and her attendance book. And the dapper new science instructor, Juan Reyes, receives a threatening message recalling that a teacher was once flayed to death by his students.
As Amanda juggles teaching, moonlighting as a private investigator with her husband, C. K. Mackenzie, and coping with C.K.'s visiting 16-year-old high-school-dropout nephew, she tries to find out what, or who, is behind the ominous events.
Before she can unmask the tricksters, the turmoil in the school increases when students rise up against the administration's censuring (and censoring) of a campus poet. Then unrest escalates into a lethally explosive menace, and Amanda receives a warning that there is more - and far worse - to come.

    Love these mysteries
Beautiful writing, very appealing characters, fascinating plot.
Hard to find in these days of sloppy writing and non-existent editing. Very refreshing.
The characters deserve better. So do we.
In a way, this book is like "Carrie Lite." Like Stephen King, author Gillian Roberts creates a crackling tension and a genuine sense of dread in the halls of a high school. The whole story takes place in the week leading up to Halloween. Teacher Amanda Pepper is aware that her seniors are keyed up, their energy is different, their pranks take on a darker and more dangerous hue. Is it the excitement that just naturally accompanies the Halloween dance (called "Mischief Night")? Or is it something more sinister?
As always in the Amanda Pepper books, the story is about more than the mystery. This time she takes a closer look at the passions and emotional confusion that fueled all of us when we were that age, when we were on the precipice of adulthood, when everything was too important. It's no accident that her class is reading A Separate Peace, and this makes me want to pick that classic up again.
OK, so if I liked so much, why only three stars? Because the very end is a mess. It's too abrupt, and the denouement is very unsatisfying. Amanda Pepper's world -- her classroom, her students, the teacher's lounge and office, the streets she walks, the loft she lives in -- became very real to me and then POOF! Done. Over.
    Great Reading
Amanda Pepper just feels as if something more disruptive than usual is going on with her senior English class. She has no real evidence; it is just that a lot of small things seem to be adding up to real trouble as Halloween and the annual Mischief Night party approach. The explosion in the chemistry lab which severely injures the very unpopular chemistry teacher is seen by the police as an accident.

This, the fourth book in the John Francis Cuddy series is another step up in quality.
Cuddy, asked by a long-time friend to bodyguard a woman seeking a divorce from her domineering husband, soon finds himself suspected of murdering the husband, attacked by drug dealers, and searching for a missing cache of cocaine. His relationship with a woman ADA is taking steps forward too.
This was a tight, taut novel full of action and thrills with no wasted words. I was surprised how quickly I reached the end. That it was written in 1988 and reflects the technology of that time made it that much more enjoyable.
Sadly, Mr. Healy took his own life recently so there will be no more Cuddy novels. All we can do is savor the books he left us.

    The other Boston Private Eye
"Swan Dive" by Jeremiah Healy is another very satisfying John Francis Cuddy mystery. A good fast paced story with gritty, colorful characters and an abundance of violence. Makes me want to read his next outing "Yesterday's News". Was well worth my hunt to find this out of print copy.
