Publisher's Summary:
Brett Tanager is the writer/producer of a hit TV detective show until the mistakes of one dreadful night send her life skidding out of control into a downward spiral that takes her job, family, savings and self-respect.
At her lowest ebb she is approached by Julia, her 16-year-old former stepdaughter whose best friend, Caleigh, has disappeared. Seems Julia's classmates, young daughters of Hollywood's elite, were "partying" with high rollers for a thousand bucks a night, and now Caleigh is missing, her parents are lying, and Julia is terrified. But not as terrified as Brett when Caleigh's naked corpse turns up and Julia goes missing.
Brett's attempt to find Julia plunges her into a dark, disturbing journey through moneyed Hollywood and its sinister undersides. Now, she must find resources other than drink to overcome her fears, as she is pitted against cunning of a ruthless killer, and a web of deceit in which the darkest secrets may be her own.

Don't miss this if you love noir!
A real find from a terrific new writer. The female heroine is a mess - but compelling, combative, and free of self-pity once she sobers up and is drawn into a fascinating mystery. Gould perfectly captures the noir quality of modern-day California, with its over-privileged children of over-paid parents, swimming in a sea of money and sex and the simple desire to numb oneself with novelty and drugs. The story is a page-turner - I read this compulsively till I got to the satisfying conclusion. How's this for a description of the California sky: " air the color of dirty underwear in a hamper"! If you live in Southern California, you know how accurate and perfectly phrased that is! The story follows all the rules of classic detective fiction, with clues artfully placed, but I have to say I was completely surprised at the end, and completely satisfied. And I loved the description of sobriety, and the Hollywood I recognize from real life and from such edgy Hollywood memoirs as "You'll Never Eat Lunch in This Town Again." Particularly poignant is our heroine's regret for the happy family life she once briefly possessed and threw away, and the heartbreaking portrayal of one of its innocent casualties, the step-daughter who was betrayed by her stepmother's addiction. I'm hoping for more from this writer...
Great Hollywood Thriller!
I loved the flawed main character. The fact that she wasn't perfect, she was human with all that goes along with being human. If you like books on the inner workings of the movie business, this gives you great insight into that world. From the first page I was hooked and could not put the book down.
A great beginning...
but ultimately somewhat disappointing. I loved the way the novel begins -- it's truly riveting. But, as the plot progresses, more and more, the reader is asked to suspend disbelief, and by the end, Brett becomes something of a Superwoman in her fearlessness and her somewhat improbable feats of stamina and daring. Also, there are few, if any noble, characters in "Coldwater" and it's all rather dark and depressing. Nice use of language, however.
page turner!
I just loved this book! It had been some time since I had read one of its kind, and it really satisfied. The characters were well developed and human and the plot was intricately woven.
