Not Heaven But Hell

An excellent read with a fine surprise right at the end (Don't peek, now!) Memorable and believable characters and pretty much free of spelling/grammar errors, which is a miracle for a Kindle book. My only quibble is that the author used the descriptions "the small half-oriental man" and "the South Korean" for two characters so often that it got rather irritating. I realize authors do this to add variation, avoid possible confusion, and reinforce background details, but overuse can be annoying. Using their names or just "he" a few more times would have been fine in my opinion.

This is, by far, one of the most poorly written books I have read. It appears the person writing it does not have proficiency in the English language. Until this writer avails himself of an excellent proof reader I will not buy another of his books.

Sorry, not even worth $2.99...

I love a good British police procedural. I guess like any other genre, sometimes you have to read a bad one to realize how good the good ones really are. To be fair, this one wasn't really bad; it just wasn't good. I lasted about a third of the way through before I was finally driven away by the lack of imagination, simplistic storytelling and trite writing. Not even dwelling on the bad grammar. In so many ways, I think this book would have benefited from a good editor. I know that authors are under a lot of pressure to create a "series". But if you like reading multiple books that build on the same characters, there are many out there in this genre that are much better written and more interesting than this. Stuart McBride, Val McDermid, Reginald Hill, Deborah Crombie, Peter Robinson, Peter James, Susan Hill, John Hardy, Ian Rankin, some of Elizabeth George. Move along; nothing to see here.

Not quite four stars but definitely more than three

Generally, I enjoy the DS Kerr stories. In Heart of the Demon, Fowler has once again created a believable and developed cast of characters, a suspenseful plot and clean, yet complex, story line... except for one character which, unfortunately is the main antagonist.

Other Kerr novels have revolved around serious yet realistic crimes. In this case, the criminal is too criminal, too warped to be believable and ends up coming across a little one-dimensional which is unusual for a Fowler character.

It's almost as if The Joker suddenly appeared in an Agatha Christie novel.

Well, perhaps not that bad...

Another favorite

I love anything Suzanne writes and this was no exception. The story is about Jack Heitman, retired police detective who buys a motel that he turns into a training camp to end of up with a team of experienced young Private Eyes. One of those trainees is a blogger friend Max who is the little sister he never had. Additionally she is friends with her girlfriend Valerie.who happens to be his ex partner at the police station. This story includes a vicious serial killer who is killing some of the local prostitutes and sending their body parts with notes on them to get attention of the police and press. Unfortunately the serial killer gets attached to Max and her blog in a very obsessive way. There are some very hot moments in the book from not only Jack and Valerie but others in the story. Also there are several very surprising twists that the reader will find in this story. Kudos to Ms. Steele another for my favorite's collection,that I will happily read over and over again.

I very much like Ms. Steele's books, but it's irritating how she repeats the same things over and over and OVER. we get it, you're heroes are possessive and obsessive. We get that your heroes do questionable things to their women and the women love them, but it's really not necessary to keep repeating how the hero wants to hurt his woman because it turns him on.... I think after that line being repeated 4 times we understand.

I'll still keep buying her books, because hey, I'm a sucker for a dark romance and her stories are fascinating to me.

The plot was great, I didn't see the bad guy coming at all. although it was a great plot twist, it WAS a little far fetched for me.

âEeeny, meenie, minie, moe, who will be the first to go?â I whisper the words into the silence, my sing-song lilt wobbling slightly as I sweep the knife wildly through the air toward the two women cowering there on the floor...."

Goosebumps. Man! Talk about seriously deranged characters! This dude is beyond crazy and an excellent opener to this story! As a longtime fan of Suzanne's work, it's obvious her talent is evolving. Yay Suzanne!

This story is indeed different than other Suzanne stories. Dark crime fiction. Who would have thought? Jack is a retired cop who decide to train up and coming investigators. His initial group of trainees are eclectic to say the least! I can't say anymore without giving the story away. However, keep an eye on Max. Keep both eyes and both hands on Spider. Then sit back and enjoy the ride!!

I believe this story is a great intro for this series.

Very good book to listen to

If you could sum up Lethal Play in three words, what would they be?

Attention Grabbing Story

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Didn't want to stop listening. I really couldn't figure out who did it. I really enjoyed the plot line. It kept me guessing all the way to the end. I listened to this book on a fairly long trip and I was so caught up in the book the travel time went by rapidly and really made for a nice travel commute.

What does Diane Piron-Gelman bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

I enjoy listening to books where the narrator has distinctive voices for the different characters. It just makes the story so much more interesting.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

I plan to research other books by this author and audibles by this narrator. Very enjoyable experience

I'm hooked on the series.

Only four stars because one wants to save a star for "great" books -- this is good. Quite good. I'm hooked on the series. I finish one and load the next. Underneath it all, the two protagonists are "normal." That is, you can easily empathize with the complexities of their lives that are there as subtext during the solution of the mysteries. That these two men should become friends while still maintaining a distance between them rings true as we all have friends who are kept away from out inner lives while they are still very close friends in other ways.

I do sense it's useful to have been to Lake Shore Drive and know a bit of the geography of Chicago to visualize the scenes. I know it's helping me but it may not be necessary to enjoying the books. Someone else will need to address that.

This is a really good series that stands out from the crowd. This is not a cozy "cat" type mystery. The mystery/crime components remain interesting through the series, but the building of the friendship between straight cop and gay psychiatrist is what shines. The first book is set in the late 80s or early 90s, and the evolution of the relationship over the life of the series is outstanding.

I really enjoyed this book, and this series. My only disappointment is that the series has been completed. Both characters are unusual. Their characters are well-developed yet really different than most detective/buddy combo. I don't do spoilers but this whole series is worth reading.
