    Release date: 05-16-13

    Publisher's Summary:
A Vietnam special-forces veteran investigates a government conspiracy to build a superweapon that could alter the very fabric of reality.
In San Diego, a cadre of American scientists toils on a weapon with the power to make things flit in and out of reality. If perfected, Project Vortex will make the atomic bomb look like a bow and arrow. They test it on a 727 on its way into Kennedy airport, and the experiment is successful, save for two dangerous aberrations.
First is a passenger, a young man to whom Vortex gives strange powers over other people - powers he can control, but cannot understand. Second is an air traffic controller who calls in an old Vietnam buddy, Joshua Bane, to help investigate the plane that disappeared. When the controller vanishes, Bane is alone, staring down the barrel of government conspiracy that has the nation on the precipice of a third world war.

    Interesting
Quite interesting story. There is some action, and something to think about.
It raises question (which valid all time) if any means can be justified to achieve goal?
Especially in wepapons, when impact of this weapon can be felt by all people on world?
    Another Winner
Jon Land has a special talent that always leaves his reader satisfied and begging for more books. Highly recommended.
    Another page turning read
I've read Vortex a number of times.
Vortex gives us another Jon Land read which is scarily `too close to being a reality' scenario.
    vortex
This was an exciting, faced paced book with originality and high energy. It held my interest and I could not wait to get to the next chapter.
    Superb technothriller
Jon Land, the author of "Vortex", has been writing technothrillers for 20 years. Before Tom Clancy, there was Jon Land. Although he has not achieved Clancy's popularity, his novels are very entertaining. "Vortex" is an absolutely engrossing novel that is hard to put down.
The story begins with the disappearance of a 727 from radar. A friend of the main character observes this, but no one believes him and he is eventually silenced to cover up the larger plan. After the flight returns, some of the passengers have enhanced capabilities. One of those survivors, a 15 year old boy, becomes a wanted target by those behind the infamous Vortex project. The hero, like all heroes in technothriller, avoids a number of traps to eventually unravel the mystery behind Vortex.
The Philadelphia Experiment plays a role in this as well as Albert Einstein. A bit of science fiction is added to the story in this area and, while only proven in theory, it does fit with the overall storyline. A race to prevent World War III begins and ends with the mystery of Vortex. Since this was published in 1984, there's even a mention of Reagan's "Star Wars"/SDI (Strategic Defense Initiative), although it isn't mentioned by name.
The book is long out of print, but definitely a "must-read" if you can locate a copy and are fans of technothrillers.

  • Shotgun Lullaby Audiobook by Steve Ulfelder

    Title: Shotgun Lullaby
    Subtitle: Conway Sax, Book 3
    Author: Steve Ulfelder
    Narrator: Mark Boyett
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 51 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-14-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 4 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
From critically acclaimed, Edgar-nominated author Steve Ulfelder: Conway Sax is back in a thrilling and heart-wrenching story of how far a father will go to save his son.
Conway Sax is a man seeking redemption. A man with a deeply checkered past currently paying for his sins by helping Gus Biletnikov stay sober. Wise-ass Gus, son of a wealthy investment banker, drives Conway nuts. But he also reminds him of his own estranged son, and so Conway finds himself deeply invested in his well-being.
When a brutal triple-murder takes place in Gus's halfway house, Conway suspects Gus was the intended victim, and resolves to find the killer in his usual full-tilt, no-holds-barred fashion. The list of suspects soon includes the longtime organized-crime warlord of Springfield, Massachusetts; Gus's own father, who's a bundle of insecurity despite his fortune; the father's second wife, a stunning beauty webbed in ugly motives; and a Houston con man who'll swipe your gold fillings but crack you up while he does so. But the case is no laughing matter to Conway when somebody close to him is murdered. To find the killer and prevent yet more senseless death, he needs help from both an ambitious Brazilian-American state cop, and an unlikely criminal source.
Along the way, Conway's personal responsibilities clash with his vow to help fellow alcoholics, forcing him to make his toughest decision yet in this unforgettable pause-resister reminiscent of Robert B. Parker and Dennis Lehane.
    Members Reviews:
    I'm not a "professional" reviewer, I'm a reader.
Conway Sax is as close as 95% of readers will ever come to violence, a much smaller percentage to alcoholism and a very large percentage to a really good writer morphing into a truly great one. I'm in my late 60's and read 4 or 5 books a week and Steve Ulfelder's Purgatory Chasm is the best first novel that I have ever read and he has only gotten better with the next two. I won't go into character development and such because you just want to know if you should read it. Oh yes, you should. Buy all three and delve into Conway Sax, everyman extraordinaire.
I honestly believe that Steve Ulfelder is creating his own genre, Nouveau Noir and it promises to be one hell of a ride.
    A darker Conway Sax
Steve Ulfelder has created a cast of characters who are a lot like real people. They struggle, they succeed, they stumble, they show flashes of superhuman goodness and patience and long-suffering, and then they screw up royally, and then they try to fix what they have screwed up, and some of them forgive each other, and some have a harder time with it; some of them don't. And then, you know, a few of them kill each other, so there's that. I'm lucky never to have had to deal with the type that kill each other, but I don't live in a gritty crime novel. And as gritty crime novels go, Shotgun Lullaby is one of my favorites. Ulfelder's Conway Sax shows us a side of himself that makes his junkie past both more pathetic and more despicable than we've seen before; as a "hero" this renders him more ambiguous and difficult, which I like (ymmv). I squirmed at the right places (no spoilers), and all the harder because in addition to exposing his weaknesses, this Sax novel takes us further into the protagonist's most likeable traits as well.

    Publisher's Summary:
A city councilman is dead of an apparent suicide. Ex-cop Stefan Kopriva finds himself drawn into the case, serving an unlikely client. Once involved, he discovers that things are not as they seem.
Kopriva is quickly embroiled in dirty city politics. That is something no one wants, so Kopriva must risk his own freedom and his very life to find the answers, no matter how deep the corruption goes.
    Members Reviews:
You never know who to trust!
Kopriva gets involved in his police work and dives in head first. He takes so many chances and keeps me on such an edge. It is hard to read about him and put the book down. I feel as though I know what he is about to do because he always puts his life in dangerous situations. After reading Frank Zafiro's books it feels as though I know some of these characters and can't get enough of his stories.
Frank brings me along to the scene and when he describes the scenes I can just about feel as though I'm right there with his characters.
Can't get enough of his writing.
    Great read
Great book in the Stefan Kopriva series. Always interesting characters. I like how he takes responsibility for his actions.
    Another Good One Frank!
Well done Frank. The Kopriva character continues to grow and I like the way his character is developing. It is obvious that Frank uses his knowledge of front line police work to develop the dialogues in this book and the story certainly got me involved. This book gives the reader a front seat ride into the underworld that exists in all large cities around the world which the average citizen does not see in normal day to day life.
If you like crime stories this book is for you. Frank gets better and better with each book.
    More about Stefan
I love the River City stories! I'm so glad Frank Zafiro continues to write about Kopriva and hope he will write more about him. Give him a chance to redeem himself and become a real private eye. He made mistakes and poor choices years in the past but was a good police officer deep down, just as he is now trying to help friends and people who need someone like him, he is there to help. But as usual he ends up on the short end of the stick with his ex-'Brothers'.
    Not a waste of time
I chose this rating because the book was not a complete waste of time. Pretty straightforward and easy to understand. The problem with Zafario is he is for the beginner reader. But sometimes you need a quick read. So this book is not a complete waste of time. So read and enjoy. Life goes on.

    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 2 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
Wenham & Geraldine are a long-established and very well-respected publishing firm, so when a printer's proof is sabotaged and libellous passages are mysteriously reinstated, they call in private detective Nigel Strangeways.
But the situation takes a turn for the worse when one of the publishers' best-selling authors - glamorous novelist Millicent Miles - is found dead in the offices.
Nicholas Blake was the pseudonym of Poet Laureate Cecil Day-Lewis, who was born in County Laois, Ireland in 1904. After his mother died in 1906, he was brought up in London by his father, spending summer holidays with relatives in Wexford. He was educated at Sherborne School and Wadham College, Oxford, from which he graduated in 1927. Blake initially worked as a teacher to supplement his income from his poetry writing and he published his first Nigel Strangeways novel, A Question of Proof, in 1935.
Blake went on to write a further nineteen crime novels, all but four of which featured Nigel Strangeways, as well as numerous poetry collections and translations. During the Second World War he worked as a publications editor in the Ministry of Information, which he used as the basis for the Ministry of Morale in Minute for Murder, and after the war he joined the publishers Chatto & Windus as an editor and director. He was appointed Poet Laureate in 1968 and died in 1972 at the home of his friend, the writer Kingsley Amis.
    Critic Reviews:
"An adroit formal detective puzzle...and a knowing picture of publishing" (New York Times)
"The Nicholas Blake books are something quite by themselves in English detective fiction" (Elizabeth Bowen)
"His plots are ingenious" (Times Literary Supplement)
"A master of detective fiction" (Daily Telegraph)
    Members Reviews:
Whodunnit? Who cares? I Was Disinterested!
Meh. Well-written but dry. "Blake" didn't seem to into it this time around.
    Nicely done
    3 and 1 / 2 stars
This book was originally published in 1957.
Someone has sabotaged General Thoresbyâs memoirs prior to printing at the Wenham and Geraldine publishing house. Into the book, a paragraph that was inserted into the book that was both explosive and libelous. It has got to be someone inside the publishing house. Nigel Strangeways is called in to investigate who has done this despicable thing.
With a plethora of suspects, it is a difficult case to sort out. Then, a murder occurs. The suspense ratchets up a notch.
The reader follows Nigel as he sorts out this difficult case. Following clues he conducts a painstaking investigation and ferrets out the culprit.
This is a well written and plotted novel for its time. It is very mild by todayâs standards, but well worth reading for aficionados of mysteries. This is not my first Nicholas Blake novel, but it is perhaps my favorite so far.
I want to thank NetGalley and Ipso Books for forwarding to me a copy of this good book to read and enjoy.
    Page Turner
Another reliable Nigel Strangeways mystery, this time in a publishing house where he works from the inside. By now, it's just a matter of looking over the venue of a book, and selecting one of interest. They're all going to be good. However, I will say, I especially enjoy the younger Nigel, and look forward to reading the earlier ones as I find them.

Eugenie La Verde had been found dead in her room and the murderer had not left a single clue, however slight, by which he could be traced. Her face was distorted and swollen almost beyond recognition, and in spots was highly discolored, where the blood had coagulated beneath the skin.
Her mouth was open, and her eyes were wide and staring, even yet filled with an expression of the horror through which she had passed just before her death. Her delicate hands, pretty enough for an artist's model, were clenched until the fingernails had sunk into the tender flesh and drawn blood. The figure bore evidence of a wild and terrific struggle to escape from the grasp in which she had been seized, while the dull blue mark around her throat told only too plainly how her death had been accomplished.

    Publisher's Summary:
The annual Saint Patricks Day party hosted by Tim and Jamie Malone in their small northern New Mexico community is their first in many years. But it also marks their last as they prepare to move to the Midwest. For Albuquerque attorney Neil Hamel, going to the party is a reunion of sorts with various old friends she spent a year carousing with in a small town in Mexico in the late 1960s.
Just about everyone seems to have made some move from hippie to mainstream except Lonnie Darmer, who - as in the old days - gets too drunk to drive home. Neil drives them both to Lonnies little house in Santa Fe and wakes the next morning to discover her missing. Lonnie is found dead in an Anasazi ruin in the mountains near Santa Fe, her body unscathed. The police immediately conclude Lonnie committed suicide, and her friends seem almost relieved to concur - all except Neil.
As she investigates her friends death, suspects suddenly abound. Even Neil herself comes under suspicion, as the real killer draws ever closer, eager to satisfy a newfound appetite for killing.
    Critic Reviews:
Satisfying.... The rich atmosphere of North New Mexico and some offbeat and intriguing characters combine to give this book a sharp and appealing edge. (Publishers Weekly)

    A really good mystery series!
All of the Neil Hamel mysteries are good reads. Neil is a thirty-something female lawyer in Albuquerque with a sweet Latin American sidekick boyfriend known only as "the Kid", a craving for Mexican food and a habit of being drawn into local mysteries. I've read all of this series and wish there were more!

    Members Reviews:
    Good story
I think Dobyns is an excellent writer. His Saratoga stories have more humor than some of his other novels, but I would strongly recommend any of his novels to readers. I have not read his poetry so cannot comment on them.
    I miss Charlie Bradshaw
I liked this series as the Charlie Bradshaw series, and I feel it went downhill when Victor Plotz took over as narrator and main character. The author took us from a character (Bradshaw) who had substance and struggled with his life to a cartoonish character (Plotz). The last three books smack a bit of buffoonery. Read the first seven books and enjoy them.
To know more about this series, and if you are interested in other mystery series, check out my website describing and reviewing many series (see my Amazon profile for the URL).
    One of Dobyn's Best
Fleshpot is one of Dobyn's best books! It is narrated by Victor Plotz (call me Vic) - who is much funnier than Charlie Bradshaw (Dobyn's main character in the Saratoga books). Vic is a funny, wise-cracking kinda guy and his adventures kept me amused and interested. If you haven't read Dobyn yet - read Fleshpot - and if you are a Dobyn fan, you've probably already read it - and enjoyed it.
    Very improbable, Totally fun!
Murder writers seem to need to have multiple murders and danger for main characters at end. This is no exception, but the main characters are so irreverent and so much fun that one can laugh at the genre while enjoying twists and turns. Setting in Saratoga works; this book is much better than "Saratoga Haunting" by same author.

    Members Reviews:
Evil In All Its Disguises - Book 3 of a Terrific Series!
This is 3rd in a series, following The Damage Done and The Next One To Fall, featuring Lily Moore, a travel journalist.
Lily is offered the chance to travel to Acapulco, to write a piece on one of the local hotels. The hotel, once the place where the elite used to go to for sun, sand and tropical drinks, is now like a ghost-town. No guests, empty rooms, little staff, and armed guards disturbs her.... especially when she finds the hotel is owned by her ex-boyfriend, but is being run by his second in command.
While there, she runs into another journalist who says she has a lead into a story that will take down the hotelier, and wants Lily to help her. Then she disappears, only to be found murdered a day later. Then Lily finds she is actually being held against her will and not allowed to leave.
I've enjoyed the series. Lily has what I'd call a fun job ... traveling around the globe, staying in exotic hotels, and being paid to write about her experiences. She's a strong woman, dealing with a few issues, and half in love with a tattooed cop.
The characters are well done ... some are quirky, like her best friend; some are sneaky like the woman who makes all the arrangements, and some are just downright evil.
I would recommend, as usual, to start with Book One in the series.
Sunny Acapulco Never Seemed So Chilling
In EVIL IN ALL ITS DISGUISES, Hilary Davidson demonstrates yet again she's the master of the Hitchcockian thriller. As in her prior stellar outings, this novel is informed by a gorgeous sense of place -- in this case, the fictitious and decidedly creepy Hotel Cerón. Its faded opulence, armed guards, and empty hallways serve as a funhouse reflection of the Acapulco of old. Once Hollywood's playground, it's long been passed over by international tourists on account of rampant crime and endemic corruption. Which makes travel-writer Lily Moore's swanky all-expenses-paid press junket seem suspicious, to say the least.
Someone should have told her if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. But then, she had no idea how many lives would be put at risk by her seemingly innocuous desire for a little sun and sand.
Davidson sets an uneasy tone early, and ratchets up the tension in the ensuing pages until it's almost too much to take. She uses the vulnerability of international travelers to great effect, and her ability to conjure claustrophobia from so seemingly luxurious a setting is nothing short of masterful.
