Great mystery

I am only 1/2 way through the book at this point but I find it very interesting and I am glad I bought it: to the point where I don't want to put it down. I like mysteries and this fits that category well. It follows a smart, small time sheriff as he helps investigate a murder beginning with the discovery of a headless body. I only selected "Some Violence" because there is a headless body but it was not described at length using gruesome language.

Update: I have finished the book and I absolutely loved it. It had a lot of twists and turns with a love interest thrown in. There are points where you are on the edge of your seat wondering how the scene will play out. Very well written and an easy read. I highly recommend it.

Review of Scarecrow on the March

We listened to Don Weeks show on WGY for many years, being natives of the Capital District. He made school closings a verbal Olympic sport! He had great funny stories, the "Grotto of Love", Make-a-wish with Stewart's, and the crazy version of the Twelve Days of Christmas something we always looked forward to. For those reasons, I had to read his book.

Bravo to Don, and son Jon for an amazing collaboration! We also love the Cape. Their imaginations and observations regarding the Cape were so enjoyable! I was actually sorry the book had to stop....maybe Jon could do an extended fundraiser for Make-a-Wish someday!

A terrific beach-read thriller. Weeks nailed the setting and the characters and wrapped them around a can't-put-it-down story.

An unexpected plot that will leave you wanting more.

You will be completely immersed in the fast paced, page turning thriller of a novel. The author was able to captivate the audience which left you guessing how the book would end. I especially enjoyed the unexpected twist. I suggest a sequel.

I notice between here and Amazon, this book attracts mixed reviews of the Marmite kind. People either love it or hate it. Myself, I found it a solid 3* read. It's a good tale. It certainly held my attention and I always wanted to know what happened next. It is perhaps one of those rare stories that would be even more compelling on screen rather than in print. Some reviewers have said that the tale is implausible and that they were required to suspend disbelief just too much. To that I say, they have obviously never encountered the back country in America. It is full of the weird! Another criticism is of the central characters, that they are all dislikeable. This book depicts women coping with days of struggling in a life threatening situation. It seems to me that their reactions were entirely predictable and reasonable.

The award for the worst book ever goes to The River At Night! Never have I come across a book with so thoroughly unlikeable characters.

When I first read the description of the story I was excited. The subject was right up my alley. Four girls go into the the wild and find out that there is more lurking in the forest that they had bargained for. I pre-ordered the title and as soon as I received the email that the book was finally released I downloaded it. (Un)luckily I had finished my current read earlier that day and was able to start right away.

If only I had known then what I know now!

historical stand alone crime

What made the experience of listening to A High Mortality of Doves the most enjoyable?

The story is a slow-burn style that unfolds steadily and creepily! Kate Ellis is known for a couple of crime series that are well-loved yet this reveals her strengths in a new arena. The story is set after 'WW1 and we follow a small community where there are repeated murders of women.

What was one of the most memorable moments of A High Mortality of Doves?

The twist at the end I did not see coming!

Yes I was totally caught up in the characters and who would be killed next. I was sure I had guessed right who the killer was -- wrong!!

I feel that this book is a credit to Kate Ellis and if you enjoy her other series, try this. It reveals a deeper use of psychological depth to her characters. Her creating of an atmosphere and ability to slowly reveal a small community with all its murky underside was also a strength.More please Ms Ellis!

This was an intriguing story. It was good to read about a woman so strong but hard to believe. She was so much stronger than I could have imagined. Well played story. Hope there are truly people who are hero's for the rest of us.

This short novel is better than a lot of the longer ones I have read. Thought the ending was a little anticlimactic, but it is a short novel. Good, quick read. Recommend

Thrill Ride!

It was like being on a Roller Coaster! From the climbing through canyons to the high speed chase. And you never know with James Patterson whose going to wind up dead.

Suspenseful book

I felt like I was holding my breath throughout this book. Good thing that it is short. So much is packed in to this story. James Patterson does it again.

Another great suspense!

Patterson gives us another bookshot to keep reading till you finish . Simple storyline, but so many twist and turns. Very descriptive. Excellent.

Well enough written but nonsense, don't waste your time!

Alas another piece of nonsense about a crazy killer with lots of money, a crazy motivation and a fixation on a good looking woman. The poor guy just wasn't loved by his parents. There are a couple of extra bits and pieces thrown in to the mix for variety: a dementing parent; a black female body guard and a toy boy. All well and good but you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, can you?

Not Bauer's best

I was disappointed by this one. It was all a bit silly and predictable, and not up to Bauer's usual standard.

I don't why, the main character being female, they chose a male narrator. He struggles with doing female voices, and reads the main character's as a sort of whisper, which makes her come across as daft and girlish, rather than as a hard-nosed reporter.
