Publisher's Summary:
A brother's call for her immediate presence in Palm Springs draws Margot Madison-Cross from her beloved Chicago waterfront to California's uncompromising Mojave Desert. The only possible bright spot is the opportunity to see her niece Camille. Still, even before she leaves the comfort of her penthouse, Margot senses inexplicable danger, and fears the worst for her brother. Indeed, Margot quickly realizes she is ill-prepared for Graham's actual news, Camille's medical world, and the Mojave - including its inhabitants. And before she can deal with her brother and unpleasant family secrets, murder rears its ugly head in wind-battered Mojave County, putting her niece's safety and future in peril.
Margot needs to think and act fast. But a monumental sand storm, a cave-like Quonset hut, repercussions from past events, and a torrential rain storm conspire against her. All the while, Graham's horrible secret hangs over all their futures. And though Margot's enviable panorama of Lake Michigan's waterfront is worlds apart from her niece's kitchen-window desert view, the two women are inexorably bound by genealogy, medical connections, and most importantly - love. Nonetheless, so much of their worlds, relationships, and what Margot must do, is based upon lies of convenience.

Everyone's Life Has Mysteries
Lies of Convenience is based on lies--the lies, small and large, that each of us tell to make life easier or save others from pain.
Gornell is a master storyteller who is especially gifted at creating a sense of place. Whether gazing out from Margot's pristine Chicago Penthouse or from Camille's desert view in the Mojave, the environment comes alive. The story weaves through several lives until the knot is tightened in an exciting climax, drawing the pieces of character's lives together.
Margot's brother, Graham, has revealed a potentially life-altering secret, and he wants his sister to break the news to his daughter, Camille. Will she do it? That's something Margot has yet to decide as she drives from Graham's Palm Springs home to Camille's residence. She arrives to find her niece embroiled in a murder. Someone has killed a nurse at the clinic where Camille is a partner, and the main suspect is a family friend and fellow physician, Oscar.
In this book, the reader must be willing to suspend disbelief enough to buy in to the possibility that people have premonitions, or sensitivities to situations. Gornell is such a skilled writer that I had no problem. In fact, it seemed natural, given the circumstances and characters.
I suspect Gornell hasn't reached the popularity she deserves because she writes standalone books rather than a series, but every novel is well worth investigating. She deftly enters and leaves the character's world in a way that makes you feel as if you've walked into a room, witnessed the events, and then stepped out again. You feel as though you can come back anytime.
The Tension Mounts
The tension builds as a storm edges ever closer to the small, dusty town along Route 66 in the Mojave Dessert in Southern California. This is the place M.M.
