A great follow up to the first in the series
The Spider in the Corner of the Room was the first in this series that will be a trilogy, and introduced us the the world of plastic surgeon and Aspergers sufferer Dr Maria Martinez and "The Project". It was a brilliant read, a book I throughly enjoyed, so I was really looking forward to reading the sequel "The Killing Files". If you haven't read the first part in this series then I highly recommend doing so as otherwise this novel will be totally confusing to you, as the back story from the first is an intricate part of this second book.
Having left off at the end of the first book with Maria escaping prison and fleeing from The Project with the help of some friends, we pick up here with here living in Spain, isolated from most of civilisation in the middle of nowhere. This suits Maria and her condition down to the ground as her head remains clear with no distraction, as she researches online to try and find any more clues as to who exactly The Project are and what they may want with her. She still struggles to recollect what is fact and what is fiction in her memories and also, as always uncovers new memories as she delves further into her journals.
Of course The Project eventually catch up with her and she has to flee her home, arranging to meet up with old friends, the governor of the prison she was in and her fathers old friend - Balthus, her prison friend - Patricia and a new character Chris, a hacker and contact that Balthus directs Maria to make contact with in Spain until himself and Patricia arrive.
What we have unfold is a fantastically whirlwind paced chase/conspiracy thriller that is a fitting sequel to the first book. Maria again is a hugely interesting and empathetic central character as she struggles to keep ahead of and unravel who The Project are and what they want with her. There are many twists and turns throughout as you, as the reader, are unsure who you can and cannot trust. The addition of the new character Chris works really well as Maria takes a bit of a shine to him. He is essential as a character from a practical point of view, for his hacking skills to move the plot along but also works as device to open up more layers of the central character of Maria and it works really well.
It's a fantastical story, perhaps a little too fantastical for some in places but the characters are so well written and the story so well told that I had no issue with suspending disbelief. The book, like the first, picks you up and carries you along for the ride and it is one almighty enjoyable ride.

    Title: Rounding the Mark
    Subtitle: Inspector Montalbano, Book 7
    Author: Andrea Camilleri
    Narrator: Mark Meadows
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 34 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-10-17
    Publisher: Macmillan Digital Audio
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Suspense
    Publisher's Summary:
Rounding the Mark is the seventh darkly humorous audiobook in Andrea Camilleri's Inspector Montalbano series.
He began swimming in slow, broad strokes. The sea smelled harsh, stinging his nostrils like champagne, and he nearly got drunk on it....
In a fraction of a second, Montalbano realized he'd struck a human foot. Somebody else was floating right beside him, and he hadn't noticed. 'Excuse me,' he said hastily, flipping back onto his belly and looking over at the other. The person beside him didn't answer, because he wasn't doing the dead man's float. He was actually dead. And, to judge from the way he looked, he'd been so for quite a while.
Increasingly disillusioned with his government and the world in general, Inspector Montalbano is considering retirement. He is starting to feel his age, and even his favourite restaurant has closed. But when he bumps into a dead body during a bracing swim, his detective instincts are aroused once more. Particularly when the most likely identity of the victim is a man already long buried...
Rounding the Mark is followed by the eighth audiobook in the series, The Patience of the Spider.
    Members Reviews:
    Another great Montalbano book
Book 7 is a wonderful book, and yet at the time I read it the story is also very pertinent. There is as I write this a terrible crisis in Europe over immigrants and so it is very bittersweet to read this sad story about the little boy who is desperate to escape his awful fate. Salvo takes it upon himself to be an avenging angel once he figures out the little boy's back story. But at what cost? The inspector continues to take terrible risks when he goes out alone; his clever men show up in the nick of time but how long can we count on such luck? Meanwhile Montalbano worries about getting older. Are these related? The risk taking and the confrontation with mortality? You think?
Reading this sort of makes me miss the movies, which are (at least in my memory) lighter. Sunnier. Funnier. This is a sad story about a dreadful event.
    Inspector Montalbano is my hero!
I've read them all....all the Montalbano mysteries by Andrea Camilleri that is, and Inspector Montalbano's penchant for justice, his appetite for homespun Sicilian cuisine, and his argument with the ever present absurdities and corruption of modern Italian/Sicilian life are exquisite. While his subject matter is often brutal I always feel that I'm in the company of a humanitarian champion. Camilleri makes me laugh out loud and I cheer him on with his wildly improbable plots because they take on the issues of the gravest importance. Child abduction and slavery, immigration, and bribery, are only a few of the issues that Camilleri tackles. If you're a mystery fan, Camilleri is not to be missed. I've read several of his books twice for the shear joy of the language. These mysteries are the best and the translations by Stephen Sartarelli are top notch. Go for it!
    Could be better
Camilleri has the annoying habit of ending some of his stories by dropping everything. It's the new fad in novels and very convenient for the writer. A few problems: you can't swim or dive in a wet suit and not use lead weights, you float too much, neutral buoyancy must be achieved. Also fins should be used for better maneuverability in the surf. Camilleri being ninety obviously doesn't do much diving.

focusing primarily on Ben's best bud, Mike Morelli and his partner/girlfriend
This represents a change of pace in the Ben Kincaid series, focusing primarily on Ben's best bud, Mike Morelli and his partner/girlfriend. A lot happens in these few short pages which catch and hold the readers interest, while presenting a fully fleshed out story. The tone is very Kincaid as is the nature of the story. I'd like to see more of these.
    Not his best
I used to LOVE William Bernhardt...before his publisher demanded that he lower his standards. I do not like the short story concept; not enough to develop a good storyline or characters.
    Three Stars
I prefer full length writing but the story was OK
Great idea, too short (even for a short story)
It was a great little story, fun and well crafted. But even for s hort story it was exceptionally short. If it was doubled in length, it still would have been a short story, and would have had been better expanded. I'd still recommend it, and for $0.99, it's still worth it. However, I'd recommend picking up Rough Justice, which has three short stories in it. It's much more worthwhile.
    Five Stars
    Very good read

    Publisher's Summary:
Over the course of a decade together, Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes have forged an indissoluble bond. But what of the other person Mary Russell has opened her heart to, Mrs Hudson? Blood on the floor, and the smell of gunshot in the air: both point directly at Clara Hudson.
The key to Russell's sacrifice lies in Mrs Hudson's past, and to uncover the crime Holmes must put aside his anguish and push deep into his housekeeper's secrets.
    Critic Reviews:
"The most sustained feat of imagination in mystery fiction today." (Lee Child)
"Impossible to put down." (Romantic Times)
    Members Reviews:
    Mrs. Hudson, I presume?
With this mystery, Laurie R. King takes the reader on a detour: The main character is not Mary Russell or Sherlock Holmes, but their staid, reliable retainer, Mrs. Hudson, who has a past no one would have dreamed.
The story starts with Holmes away, Mrs. Hudson on an errand, and Mary working alone in her garden. She hears a car drive up, and a man identifying himself as Mrs. Hudson's long-lost son, Samuel, greets her. When Mrs. Hudson returns, she finds a still-warm teapot on the stove, pools of blood on the sitting room floor, and no sign of Mary. What happened?
The story jumps back and forth between that story line -- whose blood was it, anyway? -- and the life history of Clara (Clarissa in her younger years) Hudson. To go into much of the story would give away the plot, and I don't want to do that. Suffice it to say that the respectable matron had quite a different life in her younger days! Holmes isn't really involved until the latter half of the book, as he investigates what happened to his wife. Is she dead?
King's recent Holmes/Russell books have had the couple working apart more than together, and this one is no exception. While I prefer the couple to work together, I didn't mind their separation as much with this book as I did with the others because the story of Mrs. Hudson is fascinating. It takes the reader back to the mid- to late 1800s in both Australia and London.
This is a worthy addition to King's long series about Holmes and Russell. While it can be read as a stand-alone book, I urge readers to start with the first book, The Beekeeper's Apprentice, where Holmes and Russell meet, and move forward through the series for a richer experience.
    The best yet!
I've read all the Mary Russell novels, and pre-ordered this one. I finished it last night. This was the cherry on the sundae.
I won't give anything away, but part of the pleasure in reading 'The Murder of Mary Russell' was stepping out of the great story and imagining Ms. King writing it. Threads and fragments left by Doyle in Watson's narrative are completed with her own incredible intellect and the Mary Russell story; the minds of the authors are speaking to each other across a century in time, deliciously completing this part of the Holmes history. I rationed the book as I started to run out of pages... I hope it's not the last one!
Ms. King, I don't know if you read these reviews (I've never written one, but I loved this book), but if you do, Mary kept me company and was a great comfort during the year of my mother's death.

    Loved It
To Do List 1. get first book in this series, 2. get book three. Yes it is that good.3. See what else Charles Colyott has on Audible Just the right mix of eastern mysticism and western practicality. Who knew that an acupuncturist could be such a success at crime fighting.
Todd Curless did an excellent with accents and genders. an all around positive experience.I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
    What's wrong with you, Randall?
    Any additional comments?
Randall Lee is a healer, a doctor, an accupuncturist and practitioner of Chinese medicine. According to Tracy, his girl friend, he is not a crime fighter. Nor is he Batman. But he can't resist poking his nose into the search for the wife of the abrasive Detective Ramerez when she disappears after her husband is injured.
Because, although mild mannered and not wanting to put himself or Tracy into danger, Lee is far more than he seems on the surface.
This was a very different book from the usual crime/action thriller, with brilliant characterisations and the unexpected poking out around every corner. Plenty of action, too, much of it one-on-one organised fights and also Martial Arts sequences. For someone like me who knows nothing about (and cares even less for) this form of engagement, these often longish passages should have been deathly dull. There were not. They were rivetting, so well and tensely were they written. The story situations were also unusual.
Randall Lee himself emerges as a fully formed, three dimensional flawed but sympathetic character and narrator, Todd Curless, performs him perfectly, a slightly nerdy, sarcastic but self doubting man haunted by his past, his love for Tracy and his need to fulfill his path as a doctor. All this Mr.Curless conveys in his reading with good modulation and clear, warm diction. His voicings of the other characters, sometimes complex, are also good and mostly distinctive, the text readings perfectly paced.
I received this book, as a freely given gift, from the rights holder, via Audiobook Boom. Thank you so much. Before requesting a copy, I had not previously read any other books by Charles Colyott and knew nothing of the Randall Lee Mystery Series of which Pressure Point is, apparently, number two. It was totally unnecessary, for the enjoyment of this strange and very exciting story. However, I will now be looking for the first book to get to know this strange and rather enigmatic figure better and await the next story with a definite impatience. Highly recommended - it might surprise you.

My 11 year old son absolutely loved this trilogy of books
My 11 year old son absolutely loved this trilogy of books. He asks all the time when there will be a new book in the series. While I have not read the book myself, my very avid reader could not stop talking about it. He even begged to stay up late so he could keep reading, something he has never done before. After listening to the details of the book, I have no intention of letting my 8 year old read it (which is the minimum recommended age). I think 11/12 yrs old/6th grade should be the minimum, but I realize I may be in the minority. While this is a personal preference, it does not take away from how much my son enjoyed this book and the fantastic writing/style.
Great book for those who like mysteries!
I met Tim at a conference and purchased his first book Code of Silence. It is a great story for teens and adults alike. This second book in the series picks up where the first left off and keeps you glued to the pages. These books are enjoyable, clean, and very well written.
    The Suspense Almost Killed Me
Having read the author's previous novel, Code of Silence, I was eager to read this next book in the series. I won't waste time going over the plot as others have done a great job of that already.
I'd like to say I couldn't put the book down, but honestly, there were a couple times I couldn't take any more of the suspense and tension. I had to stop reading. This book is every parent's nightmare, seen from the kids' point of view with realistic consequences for poor judgment and bad decisions. It kept my emotions roiling all the way through until I was crying at the climax. In addition, the discussion questions and safety tips for youngsters make this a valuable book for parents to read and discuss with their children.
High praise for Tim Shoemaker and his Code of Silence series. I can't wait for the next one.
    Pretty weird!
The content of the book is goodâ the printing for my copy was not. The copy I purchased off amazon came to me with the text backwards and upside down. I have to flip the book upside down in order to read it and have to read it from right to left. Pretty weird!
    A book for your classroom
The book, Back Before Dark, is a teacher's dream. It is broken down into short chapters that hold the attention of even the most reluctant reader. The plot moves with riveting tension at a heartbeating pace. The characters are well delineated and believeable. The book does not dodge hard issues or questions, but tackles them with an honesty not found in YA books.

Been a very good read halfway in - may even raise it to 5 stars depending on the finish
Has a somewhat tepid start but improves rapidly. Same can be said for character development since it seems that as author introduces more characters (like Lisa) or we learn more background on others already present it gets exponentially better. Some notable editing problems at first like the protagonist being told "The caretaker found her" only to tell the giver of news "Good thing you found her" or "Ellenadded" but mistakes less noticeable further along. Book is simply told but an entertaining story thus far. There is some language, but no f-bombs. I can tell author put a good deal of self into book as I checked the House of Ludington to see if it was an actual place and happy to learn it was. Am enjoying myself so far and will update with a five star rating if it has a strong finish. ***UPDATE***Hit one more snag when I read the passage "She's headed over to her place to tell her band mates the good news, Lisa said" when author meant to say "Kit said" but editing aside had a crazy finish which made for an entertaining read that I finished in a day. A diamond in the rough bordering on a 5 star read.
Flow and descriptions could have been better
There were lots of editing errors in this book but I persevered until I finished it. It seemed a bit juvenile to read but kept my attention most of the time. I wish there were more descriptions of the characters so that I could understand them a bit better. More in-depth characterizations and better flow of the book would give it a higher rating by me. I felt sometimes that the author jumped from one scenario to the next too rapidly by just making another paragraph and not finishing thoughts from the previous paragraphs. I would read more books by James Nelson just to see if his writing style is the same as this book.
    Interesting read
Trying to start over an be dangerous. Taking his teen daughter to his Aunts old mansion to start a new life after his wife's betrayal should have been a nice transition but this was anything but.
Good book, especially if you are from the area
I downloaded this book beacuse it was free and the writer went to school with my mom. I was pleased that it was a good read. For someone who is from Escanaba, it was cool to read about my hometown. When you know the area, it always makes a book come to life more (that is part of the reason I like some of the Florida authors I read.) The characters were well developed and it wasn't too predictable.
