    Critic Reviews:
"Laura Lippman's stories aren't just mysteries; they are deeply moving explorations of the human heart. She is quite simply one of the best crime novelists writing today." (Tess Gerritsen)
"I love her books." (Harlen Coben)
"Exquisite as fine jewellery." (Lee Child)
"A writer at the peak of her powers." (Washington Post)
"Lippman [demonstrates that the] best action is inside her characters' minds.... Lippman fans won't be disappointed." (Kirkus Reviews)
"One of the most distinctive voices in contemporary fiction.... Lippman has once more challenged, realigned and ultimately transcended the boundaries of genre." (New York Observer)
"Succeeds brilliantly.... Lippman is in total command of her material...a mystery so taut the reader is nearly afraid to keep going - and simultaneously powerless to stop." (People Magazine)
"From its gripping opening pages about a burned-out author's bookstore reading, Laura Lippman's Life Sentences may be the most absorbing, entertaining mystery published in the last year. Lippman does it all, from creating vivid, three-dimensional characters, to painting a beautifully detailed portrait of her hometown, Baltimore, to crafting a plot that drives readers along at a fast clip while simultaneously building suspense as one dramatic revelation leads to another." (Boston Globe)
"A terrific crime writer." (Daily Mail)
    "Intricate and witty." (Publishers Weekly)
    "A gripping novel." (Closer)

Read another of her books because this is a disappointment
Goodreads Description- Author Cassandra Fallows has achieved remarkable success by baring her life on the page. Her two widely popular memoirs continue to sell briskly, acclaimed for their brutal, unexpurgated candor about friends, family, lovers--and herself. But now, after a singularly unsuccessful stab at fiction, Cassandra believes she may have found the story that will enable her triumphant return to nonfiction.
When Cassandra was a girl, growing up in a racially diverse middle-class neighborhood in Baltimore, her best friends were all black: elegant, privileged Donna; sharp, shrewd Tisha; wild and worldly Fatima. A fifth girl orbited their world--a shy, quiet, unobtrusive child named Calliope Jenkins--who, years later, would be accused of killing her infant son. Yet the boy's body was never found and Calliope's unrelenting silence on the subject forced a judge to jail her for contempt. For seven years, Calliope refused to speak and the court was finally forced to let her go.

    Language: English
    Release date: 09-08-16
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 2 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Suspense
    Publisher's Summary:
Misery Bay is a picturesque fishing village on the Eastern shore of Nova Scotia, a seemingly idyllic location. But the islands and hidden coves hide something more sinister. Illegal immigrants and drugs are being smuggled in for the escort services in Halifax. Special Constable Garrett Barkhouse has spent 20 years fighting these twin scourges, but now he's burned out and planning to retire. However, his boss, Deputy Commissioner Alton Tuttle, has other plans. He entices Garrett to return to his old home town and establish a police presence on the Eastern shore. What he expects will be light duty - Garrett quickly discovers - is anything but. An unexpected murder of four young girls leads him into a thick web of interconnecting drug pushers, illegal immigrants, and prostitution.
While he tries to get a handle on events, Garrett is sucked back into many of the relationships from his childhood. The cast of colorful characters includes Roland Cribby, a scallop fisherman and all-around unpleasant character, old man Publicover who has just married his fifth wife, beautiful reporter Kitty Wells, and Garrett's cousin, a giant of a man who is an enforcer for the longshoremen on the waterfront in Halifax.
An offshore oil rig, conveniently outside Canadian territorial waters, becomes the focus of the investigation. Global Resources CEO Anthony DeMaio has developed a nice sideline to the oil business. When Kitty Wells - the beautiful reporter - tries to investigate, she is swept up by the machinations and kidnapped into sex slavery. As a series of hurricanes push in from the North Atlantic, Garrett and Lonnie find themselves fighting not only drug lords and CEOs, but also the elements that threaten to topple the oil rig and kill everyone on board.

The cops in Nova Scotia are tough.
This is a nail-biter. The action starts early and builds. It takes place on the Nova Scotia coast. The main hero is a Canadian Mountie, working undercover. He has interesting allies, including a massive cousin, who serves as the main enforcer, a friendly widow, a beautiful TV news reporter, hippie artist neighbors, and a good old boy. They chase bad guys involved in prostitution, drugs, murder, rape, kidnapping, sexual assault, child abuse, indecent exposure, and half of the other offenses in the criminal code. There is never a dull moment.
In addition to felons, the good guys confront (and barely survive) the fury of the elements on the high seas. Very well described.
There are satisfying villains â a psychopathic CEO, a large corporation run as a criminal enterprise, a child molester who is a physical fitness buff, a dirty cop, and a corpulent madam. All are drawn persuasively. What more could one want?
The writing is tight and fast-paced.

It isn't worth the ten minutes it took to read it. Not even a novella.
I wasn't sure what it meant in the Amazon title when it said "short," but now I know this is a short story that the author wrote for a magazine. It isn't worth the ten minutes it took to read it.

    Never hooked me
This book never hooked me. The story had promise but half way through I was still waiting for anything interesting to happen. The characters are hard to relate to. The jumps between the kidnapping in the beginning and the past are somewhat jarring. The whole thing just didn't work for me.
The narrator did a good job. I didn't care for some of her voices though.
This audiobook was provided by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review.
    Sadly, no redeeming qualities.
First, it needs to be said that I received this audiobook for free in exchange for a fair review. The fact that I promised to write a review is the only reason I kept listening.
Let's start with the story. It's somewhat promising. Girl from really odd family gets sent off to an odder school that she thinks she chose for herself. Once there, she finds that things aren't what they seem. Nice premise right? Perhaps in another author's hands.
We start off with the protaganists life at the school, but clumsily jump backward to her life at home several times before moving the plot forward. It's very confusing, and the narrator's reading style doesn't help the situation.
For me, there was no real interest in the story or where it was going until shortly after the 2 hour mark. At that point the author drops something in that clicks with one of her clumsy flashbacks to draw out a little intrigue. I perked up, thinking this story was going places! Sadly, it did not. More of the same for hours on end with no real progress.
Our heroine is annoying, dislikable, and frankly, quite dumb. The author writes in several moments when she "swallows a courage pill" to do something, except she really does nothing in the end. She blunders into situations with no idea on how to proceed and usually ends up getting the short end of the stick. Zero intelligence. Zero likability.
Likewise, the characters surrounding our protagonist are boring, 1-dimensional, and with the similar voices the narrator uses, they sound enough alike to be the same (they certainly don't really have any distinguishing characteristics).
The author certainly spends a lot of time on repetetive description of the surroundings though. See how long it takes to get sick of hearing "the dim-lit hall" or "the castle-like mansion".
Speaking of the narrator... Sometimes a good narrator can save a bad story.

"Eyes and ears open, and mouth shut."
    Any additional comments?
A small part of the Roman Empire survived and prospered into present day, retaining much of the mores of the old society. Roma Nova, however, is far more matriarchal and when her mother dies, Aurelia becomes head of the Metella, first of the twelve original leading families. Previously a major in the Praetorian guard, she is sent to Germany on a diplomatic mission - to spy. And it does not go smoothly ...
This, the fourth in the Roma Nova series, is an exciting adventure featuring a fully three dimensional powerful woman and set in the cleverly constructed alternative historical world of the 1960s. A prequel to the previous three books, it is completely stand alone with no previous knowledge required. It is told in the first person so that the listener is right there inside Aurelia's head, experiencing the action as it happens as well as her emotional reactions as it occurs. The whole carries a feeling of authenticity throughout, both in Aurelia herself and the other characters encountered as well as in her world.
Julia Teal's narration is impeccable, her pronunciation crystal clear, the pace brisk but never rushed. She is Aurelia. There is some differentiation of voice, or accent, for other protagonists, but not much, making this more a reading than a performance, and one which is pleasant on the ear. However, for this listener, there was something missing: more than the sometimes odd emphasis in certain Latin words which led to an odd pronunciation, the entire reading never quite came alive, never spoke directly to me. But this is simply personal preference: in no other way can she be faulted.
As someone who has loved tales of ancient Rome and all things Roman since reading, The Eagle of the Ninth, as a child, I heartily salute this innovative series which brings old Rome into the present day. So skillfully is it done, it would be easy to forget that Roma Nova exists only in the minds of author and reader and cannot be located on a modern map. It is also peopled with real, life-like characters and the exploits and adventures are, likewise, exciting and realistic. Great idea, great series, excellent book and a most enjoyable listen.

Jim brought all of the characters to life with his inflexion and good diction. He was easy to listen to.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Finding out that there was a city under the dump was heartbreaking to learn that people lived like that.

Great story....chapter 23 needs to be fixed
    Any additional comments?
Really entertaining, enjoyable, well written and interesting mystery thriller that keeps you glued to your iPod. The story is fast paced and constantly moving forward. Plenty of twists, turns and suspense that keep you guessing. Definitely a book worth your time.
Sean is on a mission for the CIA. When a Guatemalan drug lord kidnaps his wife, Sean will do whatever it takes to get her back. What he doesn't realize is just how tough and resourceful his wife actually is.
Great characters. Love a story that has smart, interesting and independent characters.
Love that the author incorporated an overlooked group of people.
James Foster does a really good job with the narration. Great voice easy to listen to for hours. Good character voices. Clearly spoken with a smooth even pace. Occasionally his narration could of used a little more enthusiasm. Overall though, very enjoyable.
Background noise occasionally throughout the book. Chapter 23 overlapping narration can't tell what is being said. I even re-downloaded the book just to double check and it was the same.
