Publisher's Summary:
Kill The Next One is an audacious, immersive psychological thriller in which nothing is what it seems.
Ted has it all: a beautiful wife, two daughters, a high-paying job. But after he is diagnosed with a terminal brain tumour he finds himself with a gun to his temple, ready to pull the trigger. Thats when the doorbell rings.
A stranger makes him a proposition: kill two deserving men before dying. The first is a criminal, and the second is, like Ted, terminally ill, and wants to die. If Ted kills these men he will then become a target himself in a kind of suicidal daisy chain - and wont it be easier for his family if hes a murder victim?
Members Reviews:
Unusual thriller
Minutes away from ending his own life due to an inoperable brain tumour, Ted is interrupted by a stranger at the door, who invites him to join a kind of suicide club. In return for killing someone who 'deserved it' plus another club member, Ted will in turn be killed, saving his family the trauma of dealing with a messy suicide (I didn't say that quite right, but I'm sure you will get it). Ted agrees. It's his only way out, or so he thinks.
This is far from a linear story. The whole thing gets turned on its head numerous times, which kept me turning pages. What is real and what's not? Who is genuine and who's not? There is a big twist at the end that I knew was coming but didn't pick. When it arrived it didn't blow my mind - I was actually more taken with the twists and turns throughout the plot, lending this book the basis for it's fresh structure.
I've never read anything quite like this before. Recommended as an unusual thriller/mystery. Oh, and the translation is pretty seamless.
Three and a half stars
When I read the blurb of Kill The Next One itâs fair to say that I was hooked. I just HAD to read this book. The plot sounded totally different to other books Iâve read and I loved the idea of everything that was being presented to me. So being totally smitten with the idea of Kill The Next One, I decided to make a start on it as soon as it arrived.
Itâs also fair to say that I was quite surprised to be thrown straight into the action on page one, chapter one. Itâs a book of over 400 pages, I thought to myself, how is the author going to eek this out? The answer to that question is by making his story, quite possibly one of the strangest, most convoluted andâwell, Iâm afraid I have to say it, peculiar tales I have ever read. Did I enjoy it? Yes, I did. But there were moments where I was just plain confused. And there were moments when I had to force myself to carry on rather then give up. But Iâm glad I did continue. I know I would have always wondered what became of Ted McKay.
Iâm afraid that this is going to be one of my more bite-sized reviews as this is a book where, as soon as you start talking about the characters or the plot, you end up giving the entire book away (and I donât want to do that).
Would I recommend this book? I would, but I can promise you itâs like nothing youâve read before. So twisty I was dizzy. I guess, thinking about it, I was a little disappointed; that blurb had me buzzing, but that part of the story is over and done with in under 100 pages.
