The human leaders suggest a daring plan to buy them the additional time they need to strengthen the Fleet, as well as the defenses protecting their worlds. A First Strike deep into Hocklyn space might just buy the human worlds the extra time they need to finish their preparations for all out war against the Hocklyn Slave Empire.
For nearly 400 years Admiral Hedon Streth has slept waiting to lead the human race against the evil from the center of the galaxy. Now that time has arrived. Can Hedon and the other sleepers lead Earth and her colony worlds to victory? If Hedon fails then the Earth and her colonies will either be conquered or destroyed by the Hocklyn Slave Empire and their masters the AIs.

    The humans are coming!
The original Federation survivors are woken from Cryo Sleep and given charge of Second Fleet in the war against the Hocklyns. It is believed that the Hocklyns are ahead of predicted discovery of the humans by at least thirty years. The Federation has determined there are six Hocklyn bases within striking distance of their home world. This information is distressing, but it lights a fire under the Federation to prepare and reminds them what is ahead. The Hocklyns have been sending out two ship scouting parties to look for potential enemies. The Federation in response, to the dismay of the Hocklyns, has been destroying those scouting parties, but in so doing has brought attention to their presence. One of these days the Hocklyns are going to discover why their scouts are disappearing and who is doing it. When that happens the hornets nest will be kicked and the Hocklyns will be on their way. The successful execution of Operation First Strike will depend upon the outcome of this next battle.
well written, great storyline, great characters .
As a sci fi lover, this is one of my favorite series. A must read.
Good story but a bit simplistic
Slightly better writing in this book but he still needs to learn character development and description of emotions through dialogue and better description. The is action pretty well done. Best so far in series
Best of the series for space battles.
There is not a dull moment. If you love action and massive space battles, TG this is the one you have been waiting for.
    Loved it!!!!
This is the book that just keeps on giving what you want to hear and then some! Buy the full series because you'll breeze through it.

An infinite, sweeping saga of interstellar war - the first SF classic for the 21st century. The empire of the Shaa lasted 10,000 years. Years of terror, infinite violence and oppressive, brutal order. Now the Shaa are no more, but the terror and violence are only beginning... The Shaa, rulers of the universe, began to commit ritual suicide when it became clear that their minds - profoundly intelligent but limited - would accept no further information. Near immortality was their one, great mistake. And so began the war between the Naxids, oldest client race of the Shaa, who believed themselves inheritors of the empire, and a frail alliance of other races, including humanity. And so, the story of a dread empire's fall begins...

Fantastic adaptation of a hard sci-fi space opera!
Would you consider the audio edition of The Praxis to be better than the print version?
In many aspects, yes. David Drummond delivers spectacularly on this title. He does an excellent job at creating many different voices for the large cast of characters. I was particularly impressed by the characteristic voices he came up with for the various alien species such as the Naxids and Torminel. He also does a great job expressing emotions without being too over-the-top. Volume and speed are also consistent, and as far as I can tell, the production quality is excellent.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Probably Gareth Martinez. His light accent is well done, and you can't help but be wildly entertained by his cheerfully shameless ambition throughout the book as he stumbles almost accidentally into heroism and fame.
    Which scene was your favorite?
Probably the scene where Richard Li and Fleet Commander Jarlath are on the ring station and encounter some Naxid plotters. David Drummond's portrayal of an enraged Torminel can only be described as a masterpiece of the narrator's art.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The final scene of the Gredel flashbacks was chilling enough in print, but when brought to life in audio, you can really get a feel for the raw emotions that our protagonist must have felt at that point.
    Any additional comments?
I have really enjoyed this title, both in print and audio. I can't wait to hear Drummond narrate the next entry, The Sundering.
    Stick With It
On the whole it's a pretty good book, but on the slow side to start, and honestly until about halfway through or so... It seems lazy and undirected, but as the weaving becomes coherent you see that for what it is, mirroring of the stagnantly content beings we're watching headed for unimaginable cultural and existential paradigm shifts... There's also a nice little mystery underneath the momentous changes going on... The 2nd half of the book is outstanding and moves fluidly, and at times w/ a neck jarring pace... Pretty good characters amongst those that are actually fleshed out... The narration is satisfactory, but flawed... It contributes to the dragging start w/ a slow delivery, which is aided when you play it at 1.25x... Narrator does the alien accents nicely, but does human females in a strident voice at times... Great climaxes and ending that will intrigue as to the future of these familiar seeming ppl...

    Great Story
The only problem with this book is that it had to end and the next installment isn't ready yet! Can't wait until the next one comes out.
    Yet again another great book.
I'm getting the next one. the author does a fantastic job with every detail. The Narrator also does a wonderful job reading the story.
    Great Series
I can't wait to start the next book in this series. The narrator is great at his job! he's keeping me on my toes! The author is fabulous in his character building. You just want to rejoice, cry and fight with them. Tanner may seem like a hard guy but I'm loving seeing a hard , criminal man being a teddy bear and can't wait to see what he had to teach next! Give this series a go, you won't be sorry!
    Great

    Bad Assery on Full Display
This book epitomizes what you love about military science fiction. Loads of new tech, cool space battles and many sad red shirts dying inglorious deaths. But this if you think Heinlein needs a 21st Century reboot!
    A great story!
Kennedy writes an imaginative mil-sf story that will have you smiling and cheering in all the right places.
An okay book for Sci-fi fix.
like the series. A little juvenile written and the few supernatural things thrown in really annoy me though. a worth while read when nothing else is available.
    Just plain bad.
    1. This book is full of mistakes!! It is in real need of a re-write. Mistakes on par with black is white night is day.
As if the author took long pauses between writing and forgot what was what in the storyline when he started up again, not even caring to catch up on what the heck he had written prior.
    2. The audio volume shifts(LOUDLY) markedly whenever the "characters" converse using their suit communications or "implants".
    3. The narration is suboptimal, possibly worse at times then that of the first book.
    4. The story is at times silly and irrational and contrived for reasons that makes no sense other then to make up words.
Composing this review is giving me a headache, this due to my mind attempting to dredge up the many (1) this book suffers from and that it was forced to repress for so as to be able to finish listening to it.
I wish that my aversion to spoilers was less of an issue for me. I could then have supplied a multitude of examples of issue 1.
I am going to return this book for a refund credit and try the third book in this series. If that is equally bad it will be the last book by Chris Kennedy that I ever read/listen to.
PS. Heading for my medicin supplies now to attempt medicating myself to get rid of the migraine brought on by listening to this..
    It's really growing on me.
I am really enjoying the story but the narration is just a bit too mechanical. it takes away from the overall experience.

To save their civilisation he must destroy it. When images of a lost civilization are 'dreamed' by a self-proclaimed prophet of the age, Nigel Sheldon, inventor of wormhole technology and creator of the Commonwealth society, is asked to investigate. Especially as the dreams seem to be coming from the Void - a mysterious area of living space monitored and controlled because of its hugely destructive capabilities.
With it being the greatest threat to the known universe, Nigel is committed to finding out what really lies within the Void and if there's any truth to the visions they've received. Does human life really exist inside its boundary?
But when Nigel crash lands inside the Void, on a planet he didn't even know existed, he finds so much more than he expected. Bienvenido: a world populated by the ancestors of survivors from Commonwealth colony ships that disappeared centuries ago. Since then they've been fighting an increasingly desperate battle against the Fallers, a space-born predator artificially evolved to conquer worlds. Their sole purpose is to commit genocide against every species they encounter. With their powerful telepathic lure - that tempts any who stray across their path to a slow and painful death - they are by far the greatest threat to humanity's continued existence on this planet.
But Nigel soon realizes that the Fallers also hold the key to something he'd never hoped to find - the destruction of the Void itself. If only he can survive long enough to work out how to use it...

A story that covers it all from horror, aliens, political intrigue, biological robots, clones and technology beyond your wildest dreams, of yeah and a smidgen of sex, drugs and debauchery for good measure. I haven't enjoyed a book this much in a while......I am pressing play on the next title in the series asap :)
    Superbly done
One of my most favourite authors with a new book that is great, performed well with enough feeling to give the characters life, loved it
    Love it
Great book, great story, great narrator - its just great! If you dont like a long streichers story this might not be for you, But if you do, try it! Commonwealth saga is absolutely great too if u get hooked like i have !
    excepional book
I've read some comments that compared Peter F Hamilton with Asimov and I am a huge fan of Asimov). I would say Peter Hamilton's books have a richer content, more action and stories teaming with liveliness and inovaive detail (understandable given the time distance they wrote their books). Whole new worlds recreated in excepional detail yet perceivable by the reader.
I fully recomend the Commonwealth series and the alternative void series ( the original void and this new one).
    Good Void alternative story
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would recommend it to people who allready read the Void series.
What about John Lees performance did you like?
I thought he he did a great job. I don't understand the problems other people have with him.
    Any additional comments?
Someone said it's the same old story reinterpreted. He's right. It even has a chase in the final. Yes. It involves trains.
But in the end, if you are looking for an answer to the question: "Should I buy it?", then I say YES if you enjoyed Peter F.

    Publisher's Summary:
Eddie Cantrell, now married to the king of Denmarks daughter, is sent by Admiral Simpson to the Caribbean to secure access to the most valuable commodity on that continent - not the gold and silver which the Spanish treasure, but the oil which up-time machines and industry need. The admiral has also provided Eddies small task force with the new steam-powered frigates that have just come out of the navys shipyards. Even with the frigates, a giant obstacle stands in his way: the Gulf-girdling Spanish presence in the New World. So a diversion is needed, carried out by an up-time car mechanic and a down-time mercenary colonel who also happens to be the last earl of Ireland. Their mission: grab the oil fields on Trinidad, and so distract the attention of Spains New World governors. While the Spanish galleons and troops head for Trinidad, Commander Cantrells smallest and fastest steam sloop will make a run to the Louisiana coast. There, her crew will wind their way up the bayous to the real New World prize: the Jennings Oil Field. But Cantrells plans could be wrecked in a multitude of ways. He faces often-hostile natives, rambunctious Dutch ship captains, allied colonies on the brink of starvation, and vicious social infighting that can barely be contained by his capable and passionate new wife. When the galleons finally come out in force to engage his small flotilla, Eddie will discover that the Spanish arent the only enemies who will be coming against him in a fateful Caribbean show-down.

    Great story!
I really liked this book. I found it as enjoyable as any Hornblower book I ever read. As always, the characters are multi-dimensional, and my favorite couple, Eddie Cantrell and his voluptuous bride, Anne Catherine, are always a delight. Highly recommended!
    Heir to 1634
What made the experience of listening to 1636 the most enjoyable?
How the author tied in some of the characters and events from the Baltic War and some of the offshoots from the Italian series (love the Wild Geese). 1636 Kremlin Games was listed as the next Ring of Fire book after the Baltic War, but I'd say this one should be considered the logical book to fill that role, along with the three books in the Italian saga. I'd add I haven't read/listened to some other offshoots like the Ram Rebellion, Bavarian Gambit, Devil's Opera, etc.
What other book might you compare 1636 to and why?
Baltic War and the Galileo Affair, as it has some of those intrigues and characters brought together. Plus, some actual big battles.
What about George Guidalls performance did you like?
Wonderful. One of my favorite narrators.
    Any additional comments?
I don't know if the written version has maps and reference material, but half the time I listen to a Ring of Fire book I need one available to visualize a place, or a real person and their actual history, and the tech (such as the difference between Dutch and Spanish fighting ships of the 1600s).
    Ahoy!!
Before I get started on this book, I first have to say I love this series. That being said, I don't think I've wanted to read another book in this series as much as I want to read the sequel to this one. I couldn't stop listening. I listened to this book in one sitting, and I didn't want it to end.

    Justice for all
Breq - the soldier who used to be a spaceship - is serving the emperor she swore to destroy. She's been given her own warship, her own crew, and ordered to the only place in the galaxy she would have agreed to go: to Athoek Station, to protect the family of the lieutenant she murdered in cold blood. Athoek was annexed by the Empire some 600 years ago, and by now everyone is fully 'civilised'. Or should be - but everything is not as tranquil as it appears. Old divisions are still troublesome, Athoek Station's AI is restless, and it looks like the alien Presger might have taken an interest in what's going on. With no guarantees that their interest is benevolent.

An excellent follow on from Ancillary Justice
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I already have - a new angle on SciFi that is beautifully written and narrated. Not quite as tight a story as the first book, clearly positioning for the third...but it can't come soon enough.
Ms Andoh is a brilliant narrator.
Have you listened to any of Adjoa Andohs other performances before? How does this one compare?
Ancillary Justice - and she's still great.
    Ultimately satisfying but slow
This follow-up to Ancillary Justice continues to intrigue as the author expands her unique universe and its inhabitants, but the plot evolves at a glacial pace. That said, the characters are interesting, the social commentary is good and new characters settle well into the story line. Those who like lots of action and techno-wizardry in their SF might wish to look elsewhere, but this book builds on the first novel in a satisfying manner. Although the pace of the story can dawdle at times, I'm still keen to listen to the next instalment in the series when it arrives.
The narration by Adjoa Andoh is very good, with a pleasing variety of voices. I really liked her work in Alastair Reynolds "On the Steel Breeze" and this work is just as good.
Recommended if you like a slow burning SF story with a social conscience.
Nice second part, Waiting for the third book!

After really loving the first book on the Imperial Radch series, Ancillary Justice, and seeing that I was not the only one (is there any price Leckie didnt win?) it was a no brainer to continue with the series. It was hard to though, because as it turns out, the changed the narrator (First book was read by Celeste Ciulla and this one is Adjoa Andoh) and so several of the pronunciations, names, etc changed and for the first quarter of the book it was hard to fully engage. Once I was past this, the story was great. Leckie has a gift in building and sharing this new different cultural groups and the Radch universe can be very dark and very colorful at the same time.
    Final thoughts
While the first book was intended to be obviously the introduction to the world and developed the revenge sentiment in Breq, this book went deeper into her as character, and that was great.

    The epic post-apocalyptic series continues...
In the aftermath of the brutal attack on his family compound, Alex Fletcher embraces his rapidly expanding role within the New England Regional Recovery Zone (RRZ).
Fueled by a limitless drive to protect his family and a rekindled sense of duty, he enlists the reluctant aid of a local militia commander - to ease the public's fears of a federal government takeover.
As Captain Fletcher digs deeper into the government's plans, he starts to question the federal government's intentions - and ability to stabilize the situation in New England. I think I'm becoming paranoid
Well written with a great blend of plot development and action, the third book in the The Perseid Collapse series offers a glimpse into how the US might try and recover after a significant collapse in infrastructure. Mr. Konkoly does a great job of painting an all too realistic possibility of high amounts of government oversight combined with the lawlessness of a post-apocalyptic world. The story wraps up the series nicely but also leaves room for the author to come back and rejoin the fletchers as some point in the future.
The narrator does a great job bringing all the characters to life and does well with the New England Accent.
How did Book 3 go so wrong?
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
I enjoyed the first two books of the series. The story and events were believable and the books flowed well. In Book 3 we have another disaster that nearly wipes out the infrastructure of the East Coast. Rather than a continuation of the struggles that Alex and his family would face, we are presented with the implausible tale of how the Federal government would seek to use small, under trained, ill-equipped local militias to secure the population. It just did not ring true at all. Why bypass the State, County, and local Police organizations let alone the many fire departments, Red Cross and other first responders.
It seemed the author wants to weave a story of how substantial the militias are rather than construct how a real disaster would play out. The constant hints that Homeland Security was out to rob Americans of thier Open Carry Righrs became boring. Yet the author saw no contradication with the militias denying fellow Americans the freedom of assembly and movement. Of course in a emergency that leaves millions without power, food or water, security forces would be expected to disarm people carrying and bruising weapons in their vincity.

But when that course of action is interrupted by The Lilly's crew, the results become far worse. Fluctuating time realms rapidly spread across the globe and threaten to rip the planet apart. Join Jason, Billy, Traveler, Ricket and Dira on their mission as they literally travel to the ends of time to bring Earth back to the twenty-first century.

    installment great
It make no sense that Stalls lives. u made Jason into such a idiot. I wish you could go back and fix it. You mean to tell me that they let him get up. put on Jason suite then get in his ship and LEAVE!!!! C'mon man.
    Great as Usual
Mark Wayne McGinnis creates consistently great contemporary sy-fi. L.J.Ganser brings it all to life brilliantly.
After writing 3 mildly entertaining books, Why????
The first three books were entertaining. Nothing original or complex but entertaining. Yeah I thought the previous books were a little contrived but this book is just horrible. Each step of the way, this so called former Navy SEAL team commander makes dumber and dumber mistakes and his colleagues drop like flys. His ideas on time don't mesh with any consistent theories and the action is forced. Why???? I can only think he was contracted to write a fourth book and was trying to get out of the contract by writing a mess-ter-piece.
    What Happened Here?
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
This recording needs a better reader. This story needs someone who can do multiple voices or it needs several readers. For Gods sake.... get a female to voice the female parts!
Would you recommend Realms of Time to your friends? Why or why not?
No. The reader stinks. I thought I was in a different story.
What didnt you like about L.J. Gansers performance?
    Hated it!
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
    Disappointment!

What did you love best about Realms of Time?
This is a leading question. You're assuming I love something in Realms of Time. You're right-I did. I loved just about everything in the book. There's stalwart warriors ready to sacrifice their lives; a gallant Captain who is a great leader but a jinx in the Romance department; enough fusty military to require paperwork to document their greed; unusual pets; and Dinosaurs!! Mean, flesh eating monstrosities that try to stop the crew from executing the only option left to them to save Mother Earth and their loved ones. This book has enough fast moving action to satisfy anyone, even a junkie like me. Did I mention that the characters are continuing to develop? This book is too good to set down!
Who was your favorite character and why?
Every last one of the characters were my favorites: some when they were blasted to atoms, others when they did the right thing. I loved McInnes' ability to ignore the box.

When your mind is a weapon, freedom comes at a price.
Four months have passed since Kira left home to join Julian's Jacker Freedom Alliance, but the hole in her heart still whistles empty where her boyfriend Raf used to be. She fills it with weapons training, JFA patrols, and an obsessive hunt for FBI agent Kestrel, ignoring Julian's worries about her safety and repeated attempts to recruit her for his revolutionary chat-casts.
When anti-jacker politician Vellus surrounds Jackertown with the National Guard, Kira discovers there's more to Julian's concerns than she knew, but she's forced to take on a mission that neither want and that might be her last - assassinating Senator Vellus before he can snuff out Julian's revolution and the jackers she's come to love.
    Critic Reviews:
"Quinn paints a picture of a not-too-distant America where politicians inflame the hatred of one section of the populace for another - all for their own gain - and you worry that her world is not so far off from our own." (Dianne Salerni, author of We Hear the Dead, The Caged Graves, and the forthcoming The Eighth Day)
"Free Souls starts with a bang and doesn't let up. It blends nonstop action, nail-biting escapes, and great romance. I absolutely loved it! A great series conclusion - a must-read." (Leigh Talbert Moore, author of Rouge and The Truth about Faking)
