    Fast paced--exciting
It is important to read this series in order as one book feeds into the next book. At the end of the last book (Target) in the series Vicky had arrived at St. Petersburg and was refused access to the planet. This book opens with Vicky and her pilot/bodyguard on descent to the plant in an old landing craft with the Planet government threatening to shoot her down. From this exciting opening the action never stops. From assassination attempts to political intrigue Vicky weaves her way to put together a fleet of merchant ships from St. Petersburg to go to the two nearby starving plants to start a barter trade to save all three plants and feed the starving people. Vickys step mother has put a price on Vickys head for her death while she is attempting to take over control of the Greenfeld Empire.
Vicky has grown a great deal in this book from the original spoiled brat that she was portrayed as in the Kris Longknife series. She is now a responsible and caring beautiful young woman. Thank goodness Shepherd has significantly reduced the sex scenes from the last book. Shepherd has such interesting characters in his stories with great bantering dialog. Vickys personal computer cannot match Kriss Nellie. Looking forward to finding out what happens to Vicky. Dina Pearlman narrates the story.
    The little Dutches grows up.
This is the second of the the Vicky Peterwald series. a spinoff the the Kris Longknife books. In this book we find Lt. Commander Peterwald growing up. Finding the real world limits ans she starts to build her base of operations for the rebellion to save the soul of the greenfeld empire.
Ms. Pearlman's narration is spot on and excellent as alway. I can't wait for the next book in this series.
    fine Science fiction
I must say each of these books and come out I enjoy more and more. another science fiction series that reminds me a lot of the Honor Harrington line.
    A great start
Very nice read was a little disappointed at how short it is but still a great story well worth the time.
    great read
    A. really good story any Chris Longknife fan will love. I am looking forward to the next installment.

"We speak of a mother's love, but we forget her power."
Civilization has come to the alien, sunless planet its inhabitants call Eden.
Just a few generations ago, the planet's 500 inhabitants huddled together in the light and warmth of the Forest's lantern trees, afraid to venture out into the cold darkness around them.
Now, humanity has spread across Eden, and two kingdoms have emerged. Both are sustained by violence and dominated by men - and both claim to be the favored children of Gela, the woman who came to Eden long ago on a boat that could cross the stars, and became the mother of them all.
When young Starlight Brooking meets a handsome and powerful man from across Worldpool, she believes he will offer an outlet for her ambition and energy. But she has no inkling that she will become a stand-in for Gela herself, and wear Gela's fabled ring on her own finger - or that in this role, powerful and powerless all at once, she will try to change the course of Eden's history.

My Pick for Best Book of 2015
I'm actually surprised that Mother of Eden is my top pick of the year. It's a second book in a sci-fi trilogy that I was super excited to listen to - but I didnt count on it haunting me all year long. Where Chris Beckett's first book intrigued with its tale of a small band of settlers in a strange world, the second book is grander in scope, and far more profound, tracking the next stage in the arc of civilization. For a relatively short work, this novel covers a lot of ground: it brilliantly captures gender role origins, linguistic development, empire building, and humanitys innate tendency to seek out messianic experiences. It goes a long way towards untangling the question of how we got here as a society, and has led me towards works of nonfiction as well, fostering in me a new fascination with the history of human migration and colonialism.
I've both read and listened to this book, and while the print version is a totally fascinating mind bender, the audio version takes it to the next level. Following on the brilliant production of the first book, a talented multicast worked to become studiously aligned on the unique linguistic system that Beckett provides. Hearing the bizarre accents and turns of phrase puts the listener on the ground of this warring new world. I can't recommend this series enough - and it's not just for lovers of sci-fi. If you enjoy allegorical literature or speculative fiction, this story will pull you in.
    Great Second Book
This second book of Dark Eden increases in complexity and shows more of the dark side of human nature. Chris Beckett creates powerful metaphors and plants little verbal goodies along the way. The full cast was a nice compliment to the story. My only complaint is the ending which left me feeling unsatisfied. Is there another book on the horizon? I surely hope so.
    Another solid performance.
I really liked this book. Not the best book ever but really enjoyable and a great audio book. probably better as a audio book then as a read.
    Great read
Dark Eden is intriguing and this book kept that intrigue alive. The imagination of some people amazes me.

    Publisher's Summary:
For Nate Wilder, anxiety is nothing new. Regularly suffering from panic attacks triggered by news reports of world catastrophes, he can barely handle his everyday life even when, rationally, the events should not affect him. Nate becomes a prepper to help him cope with the anxiety, stocking a makeshift shelter.
So when nuclear disaster actually strikes home, Nate must employ truly heroic courage or fold to his fears. But in the aftermath of the bombs, it quickly becomes apparent that surviving the attack is just the beginning - there is far worse yet to come.
Wormwood is a taut, post-apocalyptic thriller told from the perspective of three main characters: flawed hero Nate; Jeanette, his beautifully flawed love interest; and Simon, the unstable leader of their survivor community.

    Just Shoot Me
Not a worthwhile character in the whole book. Painful to listen to. This book is unbelievable and depressing. don't bother.
    An interesting Post Apocalyptic read.
    Any additional comments?
I didn't know what to expect when I first started listening to this but I didn't expect to enjoy it so much! It grabbed me from the start and didn't let go.
I'm not going to summarize it in case I inadvertently spoil something so I'll get right to my thoughts.
I always love reading about a flawed character, it makes it more relatable because in all honesty, nobody is perfect! Well Nate was an awesome character. He suffers from Panic attacks while reading and thinking about catastrophes in the news. He is almost paranoid in his thinking. The latest news isn't good and Nate has a feeling that things are going to be bad. He decides that he needs to get ready in case the worst does happen and becomes a prepper. Little does he know that he may just need to use his prepping skills!! As I said, I love flawed characters, and boy is he flawed. He is nervous, doesn't have any friends and is a quiet withdrawn man.
Jeanette is Nates' co-worker and secret crush. He has had a crush on her for ages but is too scared to ask her out. When the bombs drop Nate finds himself at work with Jeanette and has no choice but to take her to his bunker. I really liked her character too. She was a strong woman and a good partner for Nate.
The first half of the book deals with the fallout of the bombs and the struggles of Nate and Jeanette to survive in the bunker. I enjoyed the first half because we see both of the characters change and become stronger. Nate is no longer a shy guy but has had to become a leader of sorts. He takes control and makes sure both of them survive. I loved the character development and was rooting for Nate from the start.
Then we have the second half of the book. And boy what a second half!! Nate and Jeanette find other survivors and end up living with them. You would think this was better but with so many different types of people and an egotistical fanatic leading them, it's much worse!!
Anyway, I flew through this book and couldn't get enough. It's well written and developed. The plot was well thought out and executed. It's also plausible and quite frankly, kind of scary!! Each character is well written and the character development was phenomenal. Each character grew throughout the story, which I loved!!
In all, Wormwood was not only an action packed book, it's a story of surviving, of finding love, of being all you can be despite everything else.

I feel like there is so much more so though this one ended on an up note I look forward to learning more about the child zombies. especially Emily zombie.
    Can't get enough!
What made the experience of listening to Dead: Spring the most enjoyable?
It's always a mash up of the story line and the reader. Andrew's perfect for this book.
Have you listened to any of Andrew McFerrins other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes, he's awesome and I just love his style of reading.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
There were several and they moved me to have to stop the book so that I could collect myself before I could turn it back on lol
    Any additional comments?
I'm so addicted to this series.
Another amazing edition to the DEAD world!
What an amazing adventure! I cannot wait for the next chapter in this epic! With the wonderful collection of storylines, and the best narration I've ever heard, this book has literally consumed the entirety of my free time the past few days. As with the eight books before it, this was an absolute treat. Please, keep'em coming!!
    So very good!
I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
Andrew McFerrin continues to be a fantastic narrator. I just love this series, and cannot rave enough about it! On to the next one!
    Still loving the story.... BUT!!!
The Emily zombie story is some of the worst reading or listening I've done, the storyline and writing is absolutely horrible an I have no idea why the author chooses to torture us with this writing. Was it part of his book deal to continue on with this dreck. So Emily of all zombies is the Moses and leader of the zombies small and adult with cats, dogs and wolves following. Yes that ridiculous... That idiotic story almost destroys this who book.. It makes absolutely no sense and almost steals the joy from the other stories and the Billie 18yr leader of civilian and military men is pretty weak also but the Emily story is the worst I ever heard.. I wanted to skip by it so much but didn't want to miss any of the other stories. It's so bad it makes you mad.. No one cares.. About zombie Emily.. It's so unrealistic and stupid..
The rest of the stories especially Kevin's, Vicks, Jodi's, juans and Cynthia is very much worth reading or listening to. Overall I still love the series.

    Publisher's Summary:
The Thirty Years' War continues to ravage seventeenth-century Europe, but a new force is gathering power and influence: the Confederated Principalities of Europe, an alliance between Gustavus Adolphus, king of Sweden, and the West Virginians from the twentieth century, led by Mike Stearns, who were hurled centuries into the past by a mysterious cosmic accident.
The CPE has the know-how of twentieth century technology but needs iron and steel to make the machines. The iron mines of the upper Palatinate were rendered inoperable by wartime damage, and American know-how is needed on the spot to pump them out and get the metal flowing again - a mission that will prove more complicated than anyone expects.
In the maelstrom that is Europe, even a twentieth-century copy of the Encyclopedia Britannica can precipitate a crisis when readers learn of the 1640 Portuguese revolt, a crisis that will involve Naples as well. Another factor: Albanian exiles in Naples, inspired by the Americans, are plotting to recover lost Albanian turf, which will precipitate yet another crisis in the Balkans. This troubled century was full of revolutions and plans for more revolutions before the Americans arrived and gave every would-be revolutionary an example of a revolution that succeeded. Europe is a pot coming to a boil, and Mike Stearns will have his hands full seeing that it doesn't boil over on to Grantville and the CPE.

A LOT of characters and some history too
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I would recommend this to fans of the 1634 universe. This book has a lot of story lines revolving around women, so women may appreciate a look into history and it's alternate path in this series. Virginia is well versed in history, but sometimes the history lessons slow down the story. One of the charms of this universe is the many characters and plot-lines that make it closer to real life and not like a heroic adventure where all revolves around one key character. However, if you get tired of tracking a lot of characters, you may get frustrated trying to follow the many plots in this book. Overall, I liked it, but needed to listen in bigger chunks of time than I usually do to follow more easily.
If youve listened to books by Eric Flint and Virginia DeMarce before, how does this one compare?
This is much better than the Ram Rebellion
What does George Guidall bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Guidall's French pronunciation sounds good. His accents for the Austro-Hungarians did not sound different than the Americans.
Did 1634 inspire you to do anything?
    buy 1635: The Eastern Front
    Any additional comments?
I loved how they gave an Austrian princess a much happier ending in the book than she got in real life.
    slow so slow
so long and boring until about 1/2 way. the second half is okay. George the narrator knocks ot out of the park. but it is still hard to listen to.
Too much detail- the story gets lost
This becomes very boring in parts. The history is described in a gods way though but the writers forgot the were writing fiction not fact.
Boring and drawn out lacked action.
The book lacked a lot of the action in the prior books. it was a very difficult book to complete.

    Love this series
I simply can't get enough of this fiction series. What a story. The end of this installment is the only disappointing moment.
    Good Book
Another good book in a great story. This story has cool characters, and the theme develops well.
This is the best SHTF series in my opinion
Would you listen to Battle Lines again? Why?
I just love this series. I really do. Good wins (or indications are that it will...with or without the death of the protagonists, we shall see). Great characters. Realistic situations. I have listened to dozens (sad, isn't it??) of this genre and I can't think of any that come close...maybe Day-by-Day, but not really. Just the best.
    This is a great series!!!
What made the experience of listening to Battle Lines the most enjoyable?
Action packed keeps you glued to the story.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I like all the characters each has a vital role in the story,But tanner is my favorite.
What does John David Farrell bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
He is just a great narrator good distinction between characters and great thru the action parts of the story this book would NOT be the same with out him.
    Any additional comments?
    Great entertainment!!!
    I love this series.
I have read around a 100 post apocalyptic novels and this series definitely makes my top ten if not top five. Can't wait to find out how it ends.

After almost a century of peaceful exploration and colonization of space, the United Earth Space Force stumbles across a shockingly xenophobic alien race that has more and better armed ships and refuses all attempts at contact. As the outgunned Space Force is driven back in battle after battle in what appears to be a war of extermination, one officer experiences precognitive visions that help him blunt the enemy onslaught, but he can't control or predict when they occur. With the Senior Brass convinced that he's a tactical genius, he's given more and more responsibility and is terrified by the belief that Humanity's Fate will be determined by a battle with himself in overall command.
This is Volume 1 of a military SF series about desperate space battles and the men, women and Artificial Intelligences, who fight and die in them.
    Members Reviews:
    Kind of boring
Glad I listened to it on audible and not wasted time reading it myself. Nothing really happened. I still know nothing about the "bad guys" after the whole book. It wasn't the worst military sci fi book I've listened to, but not the best either
Military science fiction geeks will enjoy this
There were several reason why I decided to pre-order The Synchronicity War (Book 1). One being the narrator, Luke Daniels, is one of my favorites, especially when performing a military science fiction story. Another being the Publisher, Podium Publishing, as I have , to date, really enjoyed every audiobook of theirs that I have listened to.
. Here is the rundown. Humans are now cruising around the universe. They finally run into an alien race, that seems to be far superior. Intergalactic war ensues.
In the style of Jack Campbell, Dietmar Wehr tells the story of Commander Shiloh as he makes, or maybe breaks, first contact and the aftermath. While The Synchronicity War (Book 1) was not nearly as polished, it did add in those special ideas that made me enjoy Campbells space odyssey. Such as the delay in communications due to the time lag over huge distances; all of the minutiae of all the different classes of ships; the way hyperspace travel works; etc. Think of this as a cross between these two fantastic series The Lost Fleet and Frontlines.
I really liked the twist. Shiloh keeps seeing visions of what is to come in the future. Allowing himself the chance to either make what he saw a reality or to do something different to make it not happen. I dont think I have ever listened to a military science fiction story where the main character has several premonitions. I an interested in where this phenomena will take the story in future books.
Full of military politics, albeit a little much at times, and intense space battle action scenes, I devoured this audiobook almost in one sitting.
Oh and when the summary says Be aware that Part 1 has a cliffhanger ending, it does and if you are anything like me you will need the second book as soon as possible. Unfortunately for me, at the time of writing, I will have to wait a few weeks for Book 2. I see that it is a four book series in print, I really hope that they all will be translated to audio.
While this might not have been Luke Daniels absolute best performance, it will rank in the upper echelon.

    Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Karen Memery, like memory only spelt with an e, lives in Rapid City in the late 19th century - when airships plied the trade routes bringing would-be miners heading up to the gold fields of Alaska, and steam-powered mechanicals stalked the waterfront. Karen is a "soiled dove", a young woman on her own who is making the best of her orphaned state by working in Madame Damnable's high-quality bordello.
Through Karen's eyes, we get to know the other girls in the house - a resourceful group - and the poor and the powerful of the town. Trouble erupts into her world one night when a badly injured girl arrives at their door, seeking sanctuary, followed by the man who holds her indenture, who has a machine that can take over anyone's mind and control their actions. And as if that wasn't bad enough, the next night brings a body dumped in their rubbish heap - a streetwalker who has been brutally murdered.
    Members Reviews:
One that I will revisit again and again.
Karen Memory can be classified as sci-fi fantasy, steampunk, western, mystery, or historical fiction. It is all of those. It is especially the tale of an extremely capable young woman who can be tender, nurturing and kick ass as the situation demands. Karen is one of the most memorable (figure the pun) heroines you will ever meet. She does not need a man to save her. The really great part of the story is the men do not need to be saved either. Both male and female characters are well developed and balanced. If a character is weak it is the personality of the character, not the gender that makes them so.
Karen Memory is a prostitute at Hôtel Mon Cherie, one of the better bordellos in what is to become Seattle. She works for Madame Damnable. Karen describes Madame as, Shes got to be fifty-nine, and shes still got a balcony you could do Shakespeare from. The descriptions of people are wonderful. They are three dimensional with actions fitting with their characters. The range of characters is broad also. Besides Karens coworkers there are villains, inventors, and a broad range of nationalities as well as ethnicities.
Karen tells narrates her own story. Her voice is clear. Her backstory slips in where she feels it is relevant to what is happening. It does help explain her motivations and how she comes to working as a prostitute. The steampunk aspect of the story is very subtle. It is woven into the story and not distracting at all. Karens sexuality is seamlessly written into the story. Her attraction to women is not explained or commented on. It just is as it should be only a part of who she is.
The narration by Jennifer Grace is perfect. Karens voice is strong as she recounts the events that take place in the story. She admits her mistakes, admits her fears, and allows her anger to show. She felt very real to me, like someone I would want to call friend. The other voices are equally well done by Ms. Grace. The womens voices are identifiable by pitch, accent or tone as are the mens voices. It really is a great job narrating.
I enjoyed Karen Memory and was sad to see the book end.

    Publisher's Summary:
The Thirty Years War continues to ravage 17th century Europe, but a new force is gathering power and influence: the Confederated Principalities of Europe, an alliance between Gustavus Adolphus, King of Sweden, and the West Virginians from the 20th century led by Mike Stearns who were hurled centuries into the past by a mysterious cosmic accident.
Inspired by the example of American freedom and justice, a movement in Franconia among the peasants, who have revolted several times even before the arrival from the future of the town of Grantville, an independent revolutionary movement has arisen, flying the banner of the head of a ram. The West Virginians fully approve of liberating the peasants from the nobility, but they are also aware of how revolutionary movements can lead to bloodbaths. And avoiding that deadly possibility will require all of their future knowledge and all their plain old American horse-trading diplomacy....

    It's Not a 1633 Sequel. So What ? It's Great Fun
Get over the idea that this is a 1633 sequel and enjoy these delightful stories. You will get to meet some important ongoing characters in this volume. The more of a fan you are, the more you will understand and like this read.
When this book was published the Grantville Gazette was not past it's 50th issue and many people thought the Ring of Fire series was a few glamorous novels with more of the same to follow. The idea of humble people from a small town assimilating into a big world in a known historical context is fertile ground for new and expanding approaches and with the big success of the Grantville Gazette, the ROF universe has expanded greatly into a number of serial adventures, articles and stories, some very small, some factual, some speculative and all organized around the Ring of fire.
Acculturation, opression, rebellion, irony, humor all with an allegorical eye to our current state is brought up in this book all the while under the subheading, 'This is all a bit of fun'. The bigger the fan of the Grantville Universe you are, the more you will like this book.
I wish there was more bandwidth in the recording, it sounds a little confined.
Nick Sullivan could do a real good job on this series, they should add him to the crew. There are a number of titles to go to catch up.
    mind numbing
What would have made 1634: The Ram Rebellion better?
    Total redo, maybe...
What do you think your next listen will be?
My MP3 rolled right into 2001 a space odessey which I was very pleased with. I first saw the movie when it debuted. The book certainly shed light on the story and enjoyed Clark's writing style. Unsure if I'll take a chance on another book in the 1632 series, although I very much enjoyed first two books, I have to think additional authors are reason this book bogged down. I like and can absorb a great deal of detail and setting in a story, but this book went way beyond my capacity. It was mind numbing at times.
What does George Guidall bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Narrator did a fine job with bor-ing text.
    You didnt love this book...
