March 04, 2018 Gilbert House Fellowship #189: Ezekiel 2-4
THE TRUE test of prophets is whether they have “stood in the council of YHWH to see and hear His word.” (Jer. 23:18)
This week, we discuss the calling of Ezekiel and God’s first commands to the prophet — to prophesy to “a rebellious house,” the scattered people of Israel, and to do so in a rather unpleasant way.

February 25, 2018 Gilbert House Fellowship #188: Lamentations 4-5; Ezekiel 1
EZEKIEL DID not see a spacecraft. Those who think he did are mistaken.
We conclude our study of the Book of Lamentations, which describes the desperate conditions of those in Jerusalem at the time of its destruction by Babylon. We note the parallel between “kings of the earth” in Lamentations 4:12 and Canaanite texts that refer to the “Rephaim of the earth” (i.e., a possible reference by Jeremiah to spirits of the evil dead).
Then we begin our study of Ezekiel with the account of Ezekiel’s Wheel. Contrary to the belief of many in the UFO community, Ezekiel wasn’t witness to an ancient spaceship. In our modern age, we simply don’t recognize divine throne room imagery that would have been recognized not only by Ezekiel, but anyone living in Mesopotamia 2,600 years ago.

February 18, 2018 Gilbert House Fellowship #187: Lamentations 1-3
THERE ARE times when God brings correction into our lives, although not always as drastically as He did to the kingdom of Judah in 586 B.C.
The Book of Lamentations is a series of five poems, possibly written by the prophet Jeremiah, in the wake of the destruction of the city of Jerusalem by Babylon. Today, we look at the first three chapters, which are filled with heart-rending grief and loneliness, even as the author acknowledges that the disaster wrought by Babylon was deserved because of the sin of God’s people.

February 11, 2018 Gilbert House Fellowship #186: Jeremiah 51-52
JEREMIAH’S PROPHECY of doom against Babylon concludes this week as he declares the kingdom’s destruction at the hands of the Medes. The prophecy was fulfilled some fifty years later in 539 B.C.
Digging deeper into the prophecy, we see more evidence for the divine council in action, especially God’s decree of judgment on the fallen bene elohim and demonic spirits behind the pantheon of Babylon. The promised punishment would make no sense if they had been directed at lifeless idols or carved images (see Jeremiah 51:47 and 51:52).
We also discuss the significance of the “burnt mountain” in Jeremiah 51:25 and its possible connection to the Book of Enoch.
The book of Jeremiah concludes with a review of the final years of the kingdom of Judah, from the beginning of Zedekiah’s reign in 597 B.C. until the destruction of the Temple and the walls of Jerusalem in 586 B.C.

February 04, 2018 Gilbert House Fellowship #185: Jeremiah 49-50
PROPHECIES AGAINST Ammon, Edom, and Babylon are the focus of this week’s study. Again we find that by looking closely, we see references to rebellious supernatural entities: Milcom (or Molech), the national god of the Ammonites, and Marduk, king of the pantheon in Babylon, as well as demonic entities known in ancient Israel such as Pachad (“terror”).
We discuss the near-term fulfillment to Jeremiah’s prophecy, the destruction of the kingdoms of Ammon, Moab, and Babylon, but also the last days fulfillment, especially of Babylon, and we review the meaning of herem — a Hebrew word usually translated “devoted to destruction.”

January 28, 2018 Gilbert House Fellowship #184: Jeremiah 41-48
THE SOJOURN in Egypt was such a defining moment in the history of Israel and Judah that you would think the last thing Judeans would want is to go back there. You would be wrong.
This week’s study begins with the immediate aftermath of Nebuchadnezzar’s destruction of the Temple. A remnant in Judah, afraid of retribution from Babylon because of the assassination of the governor appointed by Nebuchadnezzar, asked Jeremiah to ask YHWH whether fleeing to Egypt was His will. Thing is, they’d decided to go regardless of His answer (which, for the record, was, “No.”)
We also begin a series of prophesied judgments against the neighbors of Israel with destruction decreed on the Philistines and the people of Moab. In these prophecies are some fascinating glimpses into the workings of the divine council, as we find a description of another judgment by God on the gods of Egypt, as well as references to Chemosh, the Queen of Heaven (probably Ishtar/Astarte), Plague (Deber), Pestilence (Maveth, known to the Canaanites as Mot, the god of death), and the Destroyer (possibly the Semitic deity Resheph), all of which were understood to be real entities by the prophets.

January 21, 2018 Gilbert House Fellowship #183: 2 Chr 36; Habakkuk
THE LAMENT of Habakkuk and his vision of supernatural war are the focus of this week’s study.
The prophet, who wrote in the second half of the 7th century B.C. (probably 640-615 B.C.), was shown the destruction coming to the kingdom of Judah from Babylon. But he was also given a vision of God’s victories over chaos — Tiamat, represented by the sea (the god Yamm in Canaanite religion) — and the rebel from Eden, along with a promise of “trouble to come upon the people who invade us.”

January 14, 2018 Gilbert House Fellowship #182: Jer 38-40; Psalms 74, 79; 2 Kings 24-25
THE LAST king of Judah, Zedekiah, was obviously more afraid of his countrymen than he was of Nebuchadnezzar -- or God, for that matter.
This week's study covers the last couple years of the kingdom of Judah before Nebuchadnezzar lost patience and destroyed Jerusalem and the Temple altogether. Zedekiah appears to have been sympathetic to Jeremiah, but he was intimidated by nationalist Judeans into continuing their rebellion against Babylon against the warnings of God through His prophet, Jeremiah.
For reference, here is the timeline of the events we've been discussing in our last few studies:

January 07, 2018 Gilbert House Fellowship #181: Jeremiah 33-37
SPEAKING TRUTH can be dangerous. The last days of Judah’s independence before the destruction of the Temple by Nebuchadnezzar are chronicled in this week’s study of the book of Jeremiah.
We discuss the message given to the prophet by God and what happened as a result. It’s a reminder that preaching the actual Word of God is not a path to popularity and prosperity.

December 17, 2017 Gilbert House Fellowship #180: Jeremiah 29-32
JEREMIAH’S LIFE wasn’t easy. His message was so unpopular that he was put in stocks and later imprisoned, and he had to live through two invasions by the Babylonians. Of course, that could explain why his message wasn’t well received: “Yahweh says we’re being punished, so settle into your exile for the next seventy years and pray for the pagan cities in which you’ve been settled.”
But even then, God had a message of hope for Israel and the world: A day was coming when Israel would be restored to the land and preserved through the coming judgment during the end times, the Day of Yahweh.
