THE PROPHETS didn’t have easy lives. Today’s study follows Jeremiah through the last years of the kingdom of Judah, and the message God gave the prophet wasn’t popular.

Because of his warnings of the imminent invasion by Babylon, Jeremiah was mocked and threatened with death even after Nebuchadnezzar had carried off the king of Judah and most of the country’s ruling elites! We discuss parallels with our day, messianic prophecies within Jeremiah’s warnings, and subtle references to Mount Hermon and enemies from the north, which were probably meant to indicate supernatural foes as well as the invaders from Babylon.

JEREMIAH’S PROPHECIES get even darker this week, and God tells him to proclaim famine, destruction, and pestilence for the rebellious kingdom of Judah.

The words given to him by the Lord are so dark that Pashhur, a priest whose father was in charge of temple supplies, had Jeremiah beaten and locked up in stocks. The calling of a true prophet is often unpleasant from a human perspective.

CONDEMNATION AND promise are the themes of Jeremiah’s prophecy against Judah in this week’s study. We discuss the coming punishment of the rebellious kingdom of Judah, which was just a few years away from being invaded by Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, turning Jerusalem into a “lair of jackals” (or “dragons”), God’s decree that “the gods who did not make the heavens and the earth shall perish,” and His promise that Judah and the nations of the earth would be restored if they turned back to Him.

We also review the significance of the Tophet Jeremiah mentioned in chapter 7 and its relevance to the gods allotted to the nations by Yahweh after the Tower of Babel incident (see Deuteronomy 32:8-9 and 4:19-20).

THE HEARTBREAK of Jeremiah at the prophesied destruction of Jerusalem is evident in this week’s reading:

My anguish, my anguish! I writhe in pain! Oh the walls of my heart! My heart is beating wildly; I cannot keep silent, for I hear the sound of the trumpet, the alarm of war.

We discuss God’s condemnation of the faithlessness of the kingdom of Judah, which is startling coming as it did within living memory of the reforms of the good king Josiah.

YOU’D THINK that prophets of Yahweh during the reign of good king Josiah would have been a little more upbeat. Not so much.

Zephaniah’s prophecy of the Day of YHWH (Day of the Lord), when the wrath of God against the apostate kingdom of Judah is echoed by Jeremiah, as they warned of a day when He will pour out His wrath on an unbelieving world.

Zephaniah also prophesied against the next-door neighbors of Israel, Moab, Ammon, the Canaanites, and the Philistines, and in a remarkable passage (Zeph. 2:11), the prophet warns “the gods of the earth” that they would be razah—“famished” or “weakened”.

This is a direct reference to rituals performed by the Amorites to summon the ilnym ars (in Hebrew, elohim eretz) — spirits of the Rephaim (i.e., the Nephilim) — to ritual meals held in their honor. Derek will include a section on this in a book he plans to write for 2018.

But to conclude on a positive note, Zephaniah exhorts Judah to rejoice, for a day is coming when their sins will be forgiven and their fortunes restored — a promise in which all who have accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior will share.

JOSIAH IS remembered as one of the best kings of the House of David. He restored the Passover celebration, which we learn today hadn’t been kept according to the Law since the days of the prophet Samuel.

Josiah also tore down the high places, destroyed the altars to Molech, Chemosh, and Baal, and removed the Asherim and the houses of the male cult prostitutes that had been built inside the Temple of Yahweh!

Sadly, Josiah met an untimely end when he chose to do battle with Pharaoh Necho of Egypt at Megiddo in 609 B.C. And even though his reforms brought Judah back to the Lord, the sins of his grandfather, Manasseh, were so great that God only delayed His punishment o the kingdom of Judah until after Josiah’s death.
