भारतीय रिजर्व बैंक ने कहा है की वित्त वर्ष 2021-22 में जाली नोटों की संख्या बढ़ गई है। RBI के अनुसार, 500 रुपए के नकली नोट एक साल में दोगुने हो गए हैं,पिछले साल की तुलना में केंद्रीय बैंक ने 500 रुपए 101.9% ज्यादा नोट और 2 हजार रुपए के 54.16% ज्यादा नोटों का पता लगाया है। 

8 नवंबर 2016 को रात आठ बजे 500 और 1000 के नोटों को बंद करने का ऐलान किया गया था। इसके बाद 500 का नोट नया फॉर्मेट में आया था। नोटबंदी के बाद ही 2000 का नोट अस्तित्व में आया था।

RBI ने कहा है की 31 मार्च 2022 तक 500 और 2000 रुपए के नोट में 87.1% नकली नोट थे। 31 मार्च 2021 तक यह आंकड़ा 85.7% था। बैंक ने बताया कि यह 31 मार्च 2022 तक चलन में मौजूद नोटों का कुल 21.3% था।
