John the elder/pastor prays for brother Gaius, a very compassionate, faithful, reliable, genuine Saint in the church that was suffering with poor health and that while sick some had illegally, deceitfully, and intentionally taken his possessions.
In this letter of commendation to a particular honorable matron in the church for her demonstration of love and obedience to the gospel of Jesus Christ. She is praised for her nurturing her children in the same fashion in that they too, demonstrate love and compassion.
In this passage of scripture we can understand that as God had chosen and is still choosing those that have the indwelling of His spirit to be demonstrators of the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ. We should know by now that we are what we do; because talk is easy.
The wisdom here is a reminder of Christ's final coming to judgement; and that He will appear and when he does the people won’t be ready, and I might say, even now by what we see and hear and are experiencing it is very rare to find readiness for the Lord Jesus Christ.
This excerpt of scripture warns and provides wisdom and understanding as to our conduct as the chosen of God. We must understand and accept the desire of God, that we can’t help those in darkness and lacking in comprehension of the gospel of Jesus Christ if we allow ourselves to be deceived by and follow contemporary philosophies of the world that contradict scripture.
Apostle James is continuing to reach out to his brethren those of the household of faith, the chosen of God, the 12 tribes of Israel. He is admonishing the people of God to hold fast to the truth of the gospel and trust God through tribulation because riches and wealth is not sufficient enough alone to get us to glory to be with God.
This is inspiration for us to understand the necessity for salvation; and once we are saved we are to live by the instructions of the gospel so that others will also understand.
