Going Deutsch episodes

  • No Coffee and Cake

The play-offs have arrived on Going Deutsch: Stuttgart take a big advantage over HSV by winning 3-0 in the first leg, whilst Wehen's shocking 4-0 win over Arminia Bielefeld is marred by fan trouble that could see DSC heavily punished. Elsewhere in the world of German football, Wolfsburg lose the Women's Champions League Final against Barcelona and Finaltag der Amateure sees Illertissen beat 3. Liga Ingolstadt, Elversberg end the season with another trophy, and Makkabi Berlin become the first Jewish club to win one of the regional trophies (which I forgot to mention in the pod as I was too busy boasting about winning the same trophy with TeBe Berlin). Also on the pod: Pal Dardai is staying at Hertha, Daniel Farke is leaving Gladbach, and Alex questions the point of Augsburg.

In the Zwiete: Heidenheim score in the 93rd and 99th minutes as they beat Jahn Regensburg and condemn HSV to another play-off, Darmstadt's partying leads to a 4-0 loss, losing the title in the process, whilst Arminia Bielefeld implode against Magdeburg. The 3. Liga has similar action as Osnabrück score in the 93rd and 97th minutes to win 2-1 and seal promotion at the expense of Wehen.

  • Secret Agent Hauke

On this week's edition of Going Deutsch: the title race takes its biggest turn yet as Bayern implode to lose 3-1 to Leipzig whilst Dortmund manage to avoid doing a Dortmund by winning 3-0 away at Augsburg, taking the lead back with one game to go. Hertha Berlin are relegated as they draw 1-1 with Bochum after a 94th minute equaliser, whilst Stuttgart win 4-1 against Mainz to leap out of the relegation places at Schalke's expense. In the Zweite, Darmstadt are promoted back to the Bundesliga following a 1-0 win against Magdeburg, Heidenheim hold onto second but HSV keep up, whilst Sandhausen are relegated, and Bielefeld spill a chance to get out of the relegation play-off spot. Also on the pod: Elversberg confirm their second straight promotion as they will be playing in the Zweite next year, Nils Petersen says goodbye to Freiburg in a very Nils Petersen way, and did St. Pauli have a secret agent working for them in Friday's win against Holstein Kiel?

On this week's Going Deutsch: Hertha slip closer to relegation as they lose 5-2 whilst Bochum beat Augsburg 3-2, Stuttgart draw with Bayer Leverkusen to fall into the relegation places, whilst Schalke manage to only concede six against Bayern Munich (success!). Dortmund meanwhile put five past Gladbach and Wolfsburg launch themselves back into a European spot with a win over Hoffenheim. In the Zweite, everyone but HSV slips up as Darmstadt lose to Hannover and Heidenheim lose to Paderborn. Sandhausen and Jahn Regensburg are all but down as they both lose whilst Bielefeld win in the 97th minute against Kaiserslautern. Also on the pod: Elversberg continue to stumble, Glasner announces he will be leaving Frankfurt, Alex promotes a fanzine, and Sheraldo Becker becomes a superhero.

  • Anyone for Tennis?

On this week's Going Deutsch: Schalke, Hertha, Augsburg, and Hoffenheim win in the battle against the drop, as the relegation race gets tighter with three games to go, Dortmund put six past Wolfsburg as they show chasing is easier than being chased, and Köln win against local rivals Leverkusen. In the Zweite, Darmstadt have their promotion party on hold after losing 3-0 to St. Pauli, Heidenheim choke in a 0-0 draw against Magdeburg, and HSV drop vital points in a 2-2 with Paderborn, whilst Eintracht Braunschweig and Hansa close in on safety. Also on the pod: Frankfurt and Energy Drink FC advance to the DFB Pokal Final, Hertha are nearly bust, Alex introduces a snazzy jazz bed, and Effzeh fans protest with tennis balls.

NOTE: The Eintracht Frankfurt segments of this episode were recorded before the announcement that Oliver Glasner would be leaving the club at the end of the season, which makes certain comments in the DFB Pokal segment a tad bit awkward.

  • Someone in the Crowd

Alex goes through another week of German football full of twists, turns, and questionable decisions. Bayern re-take the lead of the Bundesliga as Borussia Dortmund draw 1-1 with Bochum in controversial circumstances involving bad refereeing, non-existent VAR, and poor gift choices, Schalke turn it around late against Werder Bremen to keep their survival hopes alive, meanwhile there are big wins for Wolfsburg and Freiburg in the race for Europe. In the Zweite; HSV lose to Magdeburg as Heidenheim and Darmstadt take advantage, Sandhausen continue their recent good form with a 2-1 win against Jahn Regensburg, and Fortuna Düsseldorf leave it late to beat Karlsruher. Also on the pod: Women's Champions League discussion, Alex talks about a skate park for a bit, and the Wehen vs Meppen game needing help from someone in the crowd.

  • Cold Soup

On this week's Going Deutsch: the title race in the Bundesliga takes an unexpected twist as Bayern implode against Mainz and Dortmund somehow don't implode against Eintracht Frankfurt, that gives BVB the lead with five to go whilst further down the table, Hertha show a lack of defensive ability in a 4-2 loss to Werder Bremen, Wolfsburg win 5-1 against Bochum in the most even lopsided game of all time, and Schalke have a null vier loss to Freiburg. In the Zweite, Darmstadt edge closer to promotion, Andreas Luthe puts in an inspiring performance in an uninspiring game, and a bad thing happens. Also on the pod: there's only one team left in Europe, a look at Germany's fourth tier(s), Arminia Bielefeld's confusing special kit, and Pál Dárdai's lack of appreciation for a Spanish culinary staple.

Side note: TWO WINS FOR THE KRAKEN!!!

  • The Most Stupid Thing

On the most sensational, inspirational, celebrational, muppetational episode of Going Deutsch: Bayern draw 1-1 with Hoffenheim but see their lead at the top of the Bundesliga remain the same thanks to the most stupid Dortmund performance of the season, Sandro Schwarz is sacked by Hertha after a 5-2 loss to Schalke, and two goals in four minutes gives Freiburg a valuable win against Werder Bremen. In the Zweite, St. Pauli lose their winning streak with a 2-1 defeat against Braunschweig, there are also losses for Darmstadt and HSV in the race for promotion whilst Heidenheim win 3-0 away at Hannover, meanwhile Sandhausen close the gap at the bottom in their first game under Gerhard Kleppinger. Also on the pod, the boredom of Wolfsburg vs Leverkusen, a weird/unlucky goal in the Kiel vs Nurnberg game, and lots of references to The Muppets for literally no reason whatsoever.

    Also - Let's Go Kraken!!!

  • Perfekt 10

On this week's Going Deutsch: Mainz and Werder leave it late to entertain us with a four-goal thrillfest, Sebastian Hoeneß wins his first two games in charge of Stuttgart, and Köln score three whole football goals against Mainz. In the Zweite ST. PAULI HAVE WON TEN GAMES IN A ROW!!! Also HSV put six past Hannover, Tomas Oral is gone at Sandhausen, and Magdeburg score one of the funniest own goals of the season. Also on the pod: DFB Pokal action sees Freiburg knock out Bayern and some less good stuff around that, Bayern also lose in the Champions League as Sadio Mane punches his way out of the team, and Alex reviews his recent trip to Germany.

  • Nein

On this week's Going Deutsch: Leipzig's struggles continue with a 3-0 loss to Mainz, Hoffenheim win two on the bounce, Genki Haraguchi scores his third goal for Union three months after leaving, and there are no other notable moments and there are no notable goalkeeper errors that cost a team in a top of the table derby. In the Zweite, NINE WINS IN A ROW FOR ST. PAULI! Also, Kaiserslauern score two in added time to draw with Heidenheim, Darmstadt open a small lead at the top, and Alios Schwarz gets off to a bad start at Hansa. Also on the pod: Koln have a transfer ban, Kovac says 'lads it's Tottenham', and the most shocking way for Freiburg to score a goal.
