  • Emergency Pod: Nagelsmann sacked by Bayern

Alex returns for a bonus pod as he reacts to Julian Nagelsmann being sacked by Bayern Munich, with Thomas Tuchel immediately becoming his successor at Säbener Strasse. We look at the reasons why it's so surprising, why it isn't that surprising, and ultimately, why it's a stupid move.

  • St. Pauli's Super 8

On the last Going Deutsch before the international break: Borussia Dortmund storm to the top of the Bundesliga with a 6-1 win against Köln matched with Bayern Munich losing 2-1 to Bayer Leverkusen, Hoffenheim get a massive win in the battle against the drop against Hertha Berlin, and Bochum win their second straight game after a 1-0 victory over Leipzig. In the Zweite, St. Pauli win their eighth game in a row with a 5-0 demolishing of Sandhausen, Darmstadt open up a gap at the top of the league, whilst Heidenheim jump over HSV, with the former winning 5-2 against Karlsruher and the latter drawing 0-0 with Kiel.

In Europe, Leipzig lose 7-0 to Erling Haaland, Frankfurt's exit is overshadowed by events off the pitch, Union and Freiburg exit the Europa League, but Bayer Leverkusen prevail against Ferencváros. Also on the pod, inflatables, an Elversberg slip and the rarest of conversations about the German national team ahead of their two matches this week.

  • 700kg of Chocolate

On this week's Going Deutsch: Bochum actually score two whole football goals in a 2-0 win over Köln, Hertha get a controversial penalty in a 1-1 draw with Mainz, and Borussia Dortmund lose vital ground in the title race as they draw 2-2 in the 100th Revierderby against Schalke. In the Zweite, St. Pauli are in seven heaven as they win their 7th game on the bounce, 2-1 against Greuther Furth, none of the top six are able to win with Darmstadt losing 3-1 to new manager Uwe Koschinat and Arminia Bielefeld, whilst HSV lose 4-2 to Karlsruher with one of the worst first half's of the season. Also on the pod: Union vs Union part 3, Elverberg's struggles and who had 700kg of chocolate (no, not me).

In the Zweite, St. Pauli's win streak extends to six with a 2-1 win over Paderborn, Darmstadt's undefeated run ends at 22 following defeat to Heidenheim, and Alex jinxes Arminia Bielefeld in a 3-3 draw with Eintracht Braunschweig. Also on the pod: Zalazar tries to get some sleep, Hopp hops away from Hoffenheim, and Kevin Trapp and Koen Casteels try out for the German Olympic team.

  • Nobel Prize in Football

This week, Dortmund win their 9th in a row with a 1-0 victory away at Hoffenheim, Mainz pull off a stunning 4-0 win against Gladbach the week after they beat Bayern, and Schalke get going in the right direction with a 2-1 win over Stuttgart. In the Zweite: Darmstadt and HSV draw 1-1 in the top of the table clash, Heidenheim and Kaiserslatuern close the gap, St. Pauli beat Hansa, and new manager Dieter Hecking wins against new manager Tomas Oral in the most boring match ever seen. In Europe, the Champions League is drab but in the Europa League, Bayer Leverkusen go through on penalties after a 5-5 clash with Monaco, and Union Berlin reach the Round of 16 for the first time ever with a 3-1 win against Ajax. Also on the pod: who Marvin Ducksch is being compared to, a driver the Bundesliga have a match in silence, and how a big Frankfurt fan is trying to keep Daichi Kamada at the club.

Editor's Note: For the record, I have no idea how you have "0-0 defeats", sorry Schalke, I am very aware that they were actually draws.

Correction: St. Pauli's Maurides came from Radomiak Radom in Poland, not a team in Portugal.

  • Feeling Blue

On this week's Going Deutsch: Bayern see red as Gladbach continue to haunt to rekordmeister, setting up a three-way tie at the top of the league, Union drop points against Schalke, and Dortmund win against Hertha. Mainz score three against Leverkusen, Stuttgart get their first win of 2023, and Augsburg start to stear clear of the drop.

In the Zweite, St. Pauli win their fourth on the bounce, there are two managerial sackings, and Karlsruher overcome a pre-game injury to continue their good form. Europe returns with wins for Dortmund and Bayern, whilst Union draw and Lukas Hradecky has another mind-boggling error. Also: Alex defends HSV, Elversberg draw closer to another promotion, and the weird coincidence at the bottom of the Bundesliga table.

  • Like Father Like Son

On this week's Going Deutsch: Union Berlin celebrate staying up after beating Leipzig whilst Alex views them as very serious title contenders, Pellegrino Matarazzo doesn't have a fun first game in charge of Hoffenheim as Bayer Leverkusen beat TSG 3-1, and three Berliners are the driving force as Hertha beat Gladbach 4-1. In the second tier - St. Pauli win their third on the bounce against Kaiserslautern, Hamburger come from 3-0 down to draw 3-3, and there are seven goals in the Hannover Paderborn game. Also on the pod: Dortmund don't have a repeat against Werder, Koln and Mainz were special kits, and why Bayern didn't help celebrate the pod's birthday (rude).

  • Not Quite Banksy

On this week's Going Deutsch: Bochum's 5-2 win over Hoffenheim spells the end for André Breitenreiter, Kiliann Sildillia gets two yellow cards in the space of 75 seconds as Dortmund claim a comfortable 5-1 win over Freiburg, and Augsburg have the shock of the round as they beat Bayer Leverkusen 1-0. The DFB Pokal round of 16 takes place, as two keeper's try kamikaze moves, one keeper scores a penalty, and Randal Kolo Muani continues to be the best player in the universe. Also on the pod: Fabian Hürzeler wins his first game in charge of St. Pauli, Bayern score 3 goals on 0.3 xG, and Hannover fans break into Braunschweig fans for a bit of graffiti that doesn't match Banksy.

  • Lewan-doekhi

On the latest Going Deutsch: Union once again win the Berlin Derby as more questions are asked about Hertha and Bobic loses his job, Bayern draw their third game in a row 1-1 against Eintracht Frankfurt as Alex questions the Rekordmeister's leadership, and the DFB Pokal has a funny goal, a funny miss, and a 95th minute winner. Also on the pod: the 2. Bundesliga returns with a St. Pauli win, a great showing from Kaiserslautern and the best apology a striker can give.

CORRECTION: The next DFB Pokal games are next week (7th & 8th February), not the week after.

  • The Crowd is Lava

Alex looks back at the first two matchdays from the Bundesliga's return, as well as the latest from the 3. Liga: Bayern draw against twice against Leipzig and Köln whilst the rest of the league goes crazy, Wolfsburg score 11 against Freiburg and Hertha, Köln beat Werder 7-1, Dortmund have two last gasp winners, and everyone forgets how to defend. It's a miracle this episode is so short!
