  • God, You're a Wife Killer. 2 Wives and a Daughter with David Schaeffer | Good Grief #15

This week I’m joined by my friend David Schaeffer to discuss his experiences with grief and loss after losing 2 wives, his daughter and his father.

David's life has been marked by profound experiences, culminating in his pivotal confrontation with grief after the loss of his loved ones. Despite the profound pain and suffering caused by these losses, he’s been able to find solace in his faith and the belief in an afterlife. He expresses a deep longing to reunite with his loved ones in heaven.

The episode provides a glimpse into the complexities of grief and the varying ways you can process and navigate through it.

Overall, the episode offers a raw and deeply emotional exploration of grief, faith, and the human experience. I believe you’ll be truly blessed by David’s wise counsel.

  • How To Prepare For The Loss of a Loved One. Emma's Journey Losing Her Dad | Good Grief #11

In this episode, Calie interviews her friend Emma Barnes about her experience with anticipatory grief. Emma's dad, Geoff, was diagnosed with bowel cancer twice. The first time, he received treatment and went into remission for five years. However, the cancer returned aggressively, spreading through his body. Emma and her family were devastated by the news, but held onto hope and faith in God.

When discussing anticipatory grief, Emma emphasizes the importance of talking about one's feelings and finding a safe space to share them. She talks about therapy in processing her emotions and working through the grief. She also shares ways of keeping her dad’s memory alive.

The one-year anniversary of Geoff’s passing was hard for Emma, as it marked the completion of the checklist of "firsts" without her dad. To honor and celebrate Geoff’s life, Emma shares how she’s planning to continue traditions, visit certain places and get tattooed.

  • Don’t Move On, Move Forward With Grief | Good Grief #10

In this episode of our podcast, we delve into the concept of moving forward in grief. You’ll hear a few personal stories, discussing how grief changes over time and becomes a part of who we are. Moving forward in grief does not mean "moving on" from the loss, but rather embracing the grief as a part of life. We draw inspiration from C.S. Lewis' book, "A Grief Observed," and share a passage that explores the idea of moving forward.

Language plays a crucial role in grief, and we discuss the difference between moving on and moving forward. We talk about others' expectations of your grief. We also highlight the importance of setting boundaries and being honest with ourselves and others about our feelings.

Throughout the episode, we emphasize that moving forward in grief is a slow and individual process. It takes  being patient and gentle with yourself, allowing grief to become a part of your life while also finding ways to remember and honor your loved ones.
