Tyre fitment and repair centres have observed an increase in vehicles with damaged wheels as a result of hitting potholes in Cape Town. The higher-then-usual rainfall of 2024 has led to an increase in potholes, as well as those which are larger and deeper. Lester Kiewit speaks to Marco Botha, CEO of the Open Play Foundation, about an innovative water harvesting and storage system which was been constructed at Kayamandi Primary School. Under a newly built artificial playing field you’ll find a custom-built water reservoir which has been constructed out of interlocking palettes, and it will store harvested rain water and also connected to a nearby borehole, and in turn fed into a four-phase water-purification system.

Online sports betting is undermining household budgets, especially among the more vulnerable. This is the finding from a study in the USA where researchers, using financial data from 230,000 US households, found that the introduction of online sports gambling does not displace other spending but instead leads to new overspending and “significantly reduces households’ savings allocations.” Lester Kiewit speaks to Justin Balthrop, Assistant Professor of Finance at the University of Kansas, and one of the researchers involved in the study.
